I think Ross Draws is good at teaching painting techniques and shows how to make an illustration that looks nice, and they are usually fairly calm/peaceful.
Ethan Becker teaches how to simplify and notice patterns, which is extremely helpful for dynamic characters who are in motion(especially in animation).

WLOP can portrait beautiful faces and expressions at the same time, not always but he's better at it than Ross (both of them are awesome, to make things clear)
This channel is about IMPROVING YOUR SKILL, not whether this art is “okay or not”
Ethan stated at the beginning of the video that he is an animator while Ross is an illustrator, hence why he focuses much more on expressions to make them simple yet lively.
Also having beautiful people WITH expressions is the best of both, like others said.

i always thought something was kinda off w ross's faces and now that ethan pointed it out it made so much sense because i tend to draw dead faces as well. expressions isnt much focused on i think (in general) but because ethan is in animation it's super helpful for his audience even if theyre not in animation.

Not gonna lie, this is something that I've noticed. And I know he's not gonna say it's a bad thing, like with the hands video, but Ross's faces to tend to look the same.
you know what. I noticed that about than not long ago. he gives good critiques to help others out in a very entertaining movieish way basically a Ethan movie universe on youtube.
meh, It's every popular illustrators main problem I'd say (yes I am generalizing)
but take sakimichan, 90% dead face.

I think that capturing an interesting emotion while keeping the character "pretty" is just harder than Ethan makes it look; especially when using a more realistic painting style.
@@hedfe it's exactly because of what Ethan said he is an animator. Our field requires alot of facial expressions, body movement, overall "life" in our work because our work is more simplified so we need to make up for it in other ways. Illustrators focus on the details and create beautiful more complex works that would usually not work if animated/modelled ect.
Each field excelles in different parts of art, that's why it's good to learn from artists outside your field they will have insights very helpful to you. It is easy for Ethan because he's an animator, but Ross has his own talents Ethan can't replicate.
@@hedfe It's not because keeping the character pretty while showing emotions is hard per se, but because they're all drawn making svelte modeling expressions (or traced over people making them).
It's fine for real life models to all make the same kind of sexy-serious expression because every head and face is unique and we've evolved to pick up on tiny details and nuances in them. It becomes a problem for a lot of illustrators because there is a uniformity to the way they approach things while lacking the detail required to naturally set one face apart from other another within their own body of work, even if their style in and of itself is very unique and distinctive.
@@hedfe i dont think it is harder. i think they are just not going for those vibes? at least with yuumei's work i know that it aims to tell a story not through the expression but the poses, setting, colours - some of her more dramatic art would definitely not work with more "expressing" faces..

Love his angry artist character! As someone who is trying hard to get better at art and learn all the technical stuff, Ethan's videos are very cathartic. It's a real relief to be able to laugh at it all once in a while.
