Honestly you tell me alot of the things I need to hear. Over the period where I have drawn, I was always told to push myself out of my comfort zone if I wanted to improve. I was never comfortable, and I still kept moving further and further from my comfort zone. The issue with this, is I was never able to be proud of anything I have ever done, therefore I was never able to gain any confidence in my abilities. This could be due to me branching out so far that I essentially just have a bunch of diluted skills and nothing I can do really well, but a lot of it is just never fully learning a skill so I essentially relapse in that area and when I come back to it, and I'm back where I started. This whole process of not being comfortable, not gaining confidence, coming back and failing, then losing more confidence than I had to begin with, has just been extremely harmful to my progress and my mental health. My biggest task ahead of me is trying to figure out what my comfort zone even is anymore as its been so long since I was there.
I’ve been told to always leave my comfort zone and I’ve found that in the 2 years I’ve been out of it, I haven’t improved as much or created as much as I did when I was in it. Sure my art has improved a ton when it comes to humans. But it’s only catching up 2 years later to my animal art and I’m so rusty over creating finished pieces. Thank you for your advice!!! I’ll be putting it to use
I need this "comfort zone" template printed to hang over my table, on my fridge and bathroom.... Because it's pretty awesome concept that can be used in every aspect of life.
Your standard videos are pretty good and make a lot of sense. The videos where you review other people's work that they've sent in are absolutely fantastic. I like this new way of doing it and I think you should experiment more with it. You seem to be able to offer even more constructive advice when you have something solid that you are looking at to base your talk off of.
Hi Ethan! I've wanted to thank you for your videos, especially this one. I'm probably not your target audience, since I'm just a hobby artist and doing art on the side for fun, while working another job. I've had times where I lost my joy in art and drawing because I've tried to force myself to draw lots of other stuff and not the things I've actually had fun at. Also I've always compared my others and was a bit obsessed with likes and the whole social media nonsense, but now I'm feeling more motivated because I'm just comparing my art to my own art and I'm trying to take it easy. So thank you very much for all of your hard work and the fun times your videos brought me. Have a nice day! :)
Wish you'd do more cinematic/composition talk, I can never wrap my head around how to set a scene and the way you explain like "lady framed by them cause they're fighting for her" "this needs to be more casual" "characters need to be closer cause there's lots of wasted space" etc and these brief comments were super useful.
I think when you are just beginning in art you are pretty out of your comfort zone already but of course, you will naturally find things that you like to draw better than others or you seem to have a better grip on and at that point a comfort zone is already forming. I was about to comment that you should challenge yourself but then I remembered that I have been seriously practising art for several years now and looking back, I definitely unconsciously stayed within my comfort zone a lot when I first started out and I think that definitely gave me the confidence to actively start to improve later on through fx using references, watching tutorials and actually applying them, etc. All in all, this was a great video!
I know he teaches drawing. But this man is gorgeous. His hair is glossy, his eyes is beautifully blue and his skin is glowing. OMG. What is his secret?
Where the hell have you been all my flipping life? You are literally the first person to say, "stay in your comfort zone"! Every art teach and artist I've talk to told me the opposite. As a result, I felt like I was going nowhere in terms of improving what I already know and to develop my skills because I was stressing over every little thing, which you've literally hit right on the nail about. I needed this, thank you!
IM CRYING (positively) THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO?? I was honestly very scared of you when I first watched you (the sarcasm intimidates me even though it's funny) but this video changed my mind!! BRB TIME TO DRAW DRAW DRAW AND MAKE ART!!!!!!
8:50 you are the first person to ever give a real explanation on what a tangent is! I kinda understood that tangents make things not look right or cause distraction or tension. But not what it is.
If you're looking for a video that is exclusively about tangents and how they can cause trouble, Brookes Eggleston has you covered: ua-cam.com/video/ZkIEpzcKLhk/v-deo.html
Wow, I really needed this. I’ve been hella stressed over trying to learn as much as I can under a short period of time, I’m just 13 but this video gave me inspiration to draw what I love, not draw just for the fact of getting better and honing my skills, thanks!
I learn so much from your channel. You are the best teacher there actually is right now on the internet... NOT. You breakdown art and teach in a way that makes a lot of sense to me. I want to buy all the classes you have available but Brazil's currency is so undervalued that anything in dollars becomes a ridiculous fortune cause I have to multiply the value by 6. Not that I don't think it's worth it, cause I'm sure it does, it's just that I don't have enough :
WOO NEW ETHAN UPLOAD!! haven’t watched it yet but I’m sure it’s amazing as usual. by the title I am going to assume you mean I should keep just drawing males with short hair wearing hoodies and tshirts from 3/4 views and never draw myself (I’m a girl) because it’s out of my comfort zone. sounds good to me 👍
Great informative video as always Ethan, the goofiness is really appreciated when tackling topics like this...cause woof it can be quite difficult to take in everything you learn/read. I have been reading “Framed Ink” by Marcos Mateu-Mestre today and he is talking about the exact same thing...but in a more abstract way. Stuff about the comfort zone etc. Anyway , it’s a must read for visual storytellers for a good reason. Have a great day whoever read this. Greetings from the Netherlands 🙋🏾♂️
Your videos always come at just the right time. It’s been about three months since I’ve been able to pick up a pen without breaking out into a cold sweat, so thank you for reminding me that fun is important too!
ive been very into art for many years but ive always struggled with figuring out how and what i want to do. and ive always been confused as to how to achieve any of my art goals but i feel that watching these videos have really helped put me in a different and healthier mindset for progressing my art and ive become more serious and motivated to learn and be the best artist i can be! 💚
Yeah I've noticed that my art rapidly improves during the school year because I spend so much time just doodling whatever I want. When I try to work really hard at something with art I just get frustrated but just idley doodling had really helped me
I had a question, do you have any tips on how to balance art and mental health? I know a lot of artists (including myself) struggle with keeping motivation and the will when going through a tough time mentally so I was wondering if you have any personal experience with this and how you got through that. I love your video's so much and they really have helped me grow as an artist so thank you
I know I'm late and that you probably wanted Ethan to answer your question, but honestly, always put yourself and your well-being above everything else. Passions and hobbies, after all, are supposed to entertain you, please you, help you evolve and make time pass faster. You shouldn't feel like your passion is cutting off your time. If you don't feel motivated to keep moving, taking breaks helps. It's not illegal, I swear! Maybe your motivation will show up tomorrow. You just need some time, like everyone else on this planet. And if it doesn't, it's not the end of the world. Perhaps it's just time to move on from drawing and find a different way of being happy. Or you just need some time alone. Whatever happens, stay loyal to yourself. Drawing can wait. (hooo hooo, this is the cheesiest thing i have ever written. But its still true.)
I like the videos where you review people's art at the end as well as give tutorials. At the end of the day though I enjoy both the only tutorial videos and videos like this. There are a lot of helpful pointers and tips that have helped me improve.
Video suggestion: Since you’re an animator I wanted ask if you could make a video about animation meme? They are a semi recent thing on UA-cam (started in like, 2014) so I wouldn’t be surprised if you haven’t heard of them. Basically, an animation meme is when someone takes a part of a song they like and make an animation of using it. Then, others use the same song and make an animation, sometimes based on the original, sometimes completely different. It would be nice to know if animation memes are good practice since I want to be an animator some day. It would also be cool to see you do an animation meme but you don’t have to. FYI the meme part of an animation meme is that it can spread fast. It has nothing to do with normal memes.
honestly thank you so much for this! i was starting to feel really self-conscious about drawing pretty anime boys most of the time, especially because some people asked me why i don't draw other things. i put so much pressure on myself to try and learn a bunch of other things at the same time and ultimately didn't improve at any of them. i'm going to stick to what i enjoy for now.

I need this "comfort zone" template printed to hang over my table, on my fridge and bathroom.... Because it's pretty awesome concept that can be used in every aspect of life.
Ethans lessons aren't just some of the best ones I've heard ever, they're by FAR the most entertaining.
THESE VIDEOS ARE COMING IN CLUTCH
So i been tryna draw pretty little pictures with my baby crayon for a year and a half but now i'm getting Learnt!
ethan saved my life when it comes to art, this guy helped me with my art a lot holy shit
His videos are so harsh and true.I look forward to each upload
I think when you are just beginning in art you are pretty out of your comfort zone already but of course, you will naturally find things that you like to draw better than others or you seem to have a better grip on and at that point a comfort zone is already forming. I was about to comment that you should challenge yourself but then I remembered that I have been seriously practising art for several years now and looking back, I definitely unconsciously stayed within my comfort zone a lot when I first started out and I think that definitely gave me the confidence to actively start to improve later on through fx using references, watching tutorials and actually applying them, etc. All in all, this was a great video!
I love this man’s videos. Genuinely feel like I should be paying money to access this kind of information.
2:45 love how family and friends is outside of the comfort zone you know us so well
Ethan Becker: You know how you can use the shovel.
Justin Johnson: You betcha.
All my favorite artists being homies lately, so cool and wonderful to see
When he explains somthing he is Like
No but also yes
So essentially stay in your comfort zone until you are comfortable to get out of your comfort zone
What is your skincare routine and makeup routine, sir? Your skin is FLAWLESS.
Ahmeds course made me understand form like a professional, i swear its like black magic!
Sinix: "I'm sure it's a wonderful course." 17:02
8:50 you are the first person to ever give a real explanation on what a tangent is! I kinda understood that tangents make things not look right or cause distraction or tension. But not what it is.
If you're looking for a video that is exclusively about tangents and how they can cause trouble, Brookes Eggleston has you covered:

"hi guys were gonna go-AND GIRLS,were gonna go..."
That last animation by jgil was really REALLY impressive, it was eye catching and sold me the story instantly, love what he did right there!
I love how he is isulting you but at the same time laughing at the insult HAHAHAH
Left my comfort zone and forgot how to sketch for a whole month 💀
I feel like this can be applied to pretty much everything.
Great stuff man ! It's so important to settle in your comfort zone. Wanting to do to much = stress and stress is THE creativity killer !
So we’re not gonna talk abt the shovel thing😭😭 what even was that
Best video editing on UA-cam
WOO NEW ETHAN UPLOAD!!
haven’t watched it yet but I’m sure it’s amazing as usual.
by the title I am going to assume you mean I should keep just drawing males with short hair wearing hoodies and tshirts from 3/4 views and never draw myself (I’m a girl) because it’s out of my comfort zone. sounds good to me 👍
"That is just too much for the eye". These are the kinds of info tidbits I'm here for. That is exactly the shit I need to learn. Great stuff.
Now I just need to know what I'm comfortable doing lol
ive been very into art for many years but ive always struggled with figuring out how and what i want to do. and ive always been confused as to how to achieve any of my art goals but i feel that watching these videos have really helped put me in a different and healthier mindset for progressing my art and ive become more serious and motivated to learn and be the best artist i can be! 💚
Only 8 dislike?
People have learnt his humour.
Man, I love your energy. Instant follow, thanks for sharing these gems.
I can't find your twitch. Can you link it description? Or can someone reply with the link?
Yeah I've noticed that my art rapidly improves during the school year because I spend so much time just doodling whatever I want. When I try to work really hard at something with art I just get frustrated but just idley doodling had really helped me
Love that outfit
I can't stop smiling while watching your videos. Thanks, Ethan.
For the love of god stop disliking videos Ethan is just trying to give advices
Video suggestion:
Since you’re an animator I wanted ask if you could make a video about animation meme? They are a semi recent thing on UA-cam (started in like, 2014) so I wouldn’t be surprised if you haven’t heard of them. Basically, an animation meme is when someone takes a part of a song they like and make an animation of using it. Then, others use the same song and make an animation, sometimes based on the original, sometimes completely different. It would be nice to know if animation memes are good practice since I want to be an animator some day. It would also be cool to see you do an animation meme but you don’t have to.
FYI the meme part of an animation meme is that it can spread fast. It has nothing to do with normal memes.
So, what he actually means is : Never draw without references.
honestly thank you so much for this! i was starting to feel really self-conscious about drawing pretty anime boys most of the time, especially because some people asked me why i don't draw other things. i put so much pressure on myself to try and learn a bunch of other things at the same time and ultimately didn't improve at any of them. i'm going to stick to what i enjoy for now.
"focus" was really calling me out, i should be reading papers, not falling into a parasocial relationship trap here. I don't even draw.
i was legit startled within the first 2 seconds because my baby brain wasn't ready for the aggression when it hit this time
