Being a recognized Crimean Karaite, as my ancestors before me, while still living in Ukraine, I do have something to note: The Christianization of Crimean Karaites was actually sparked by Seraya Shapshal, the ancestor of current All-Ukrainian Organization of Crimean Karaites leader Vladimir Ormeli, who claimed Crimean Karaites were of Khazarian origin (which already has been disproven), and has been noted here in Ukraine in most Jewish communities, not just Karaite, as primary reason of the dejudaization of Crimean Karaites. As Seraya Shapshal was the leader of the Crimean Karaite community from 1911 to 1945, he was able to put a lot of changes into place, like banning the teaching of the Hebrew language, that eventually led to many Crimean Karaites being indoctrinated to deny their Jewish heritage, as well as the turkification of Crimean Karaites (Shapshal was a fierce supporter of turkification, hence also his support to the [disproven] claims of Crimean Karaites originating from the Khazars). He was actually helped in doing so by the deportation that the Nazis and Soviets did around the time of the Second World War, as Crimean Karaites were forced to deny their Jewish heritage regardless at that moment, most of those who did not have been killed by the Nazis and Soviets... After the Second World War, the Crimean Karaite community actually fell apart, as the ideas of Shapshal were continued by those which were high-placed in the community and caused many Crimean Karaites to convert to Christianity, causing segregation between Crimean Karaites, and eventually those who wished to remain Jewish mostly moved away from Crimea, like in case of my grandparents, they moved to Poland and to Canada. And basically, today's Crimean Karaite community is no longer what it used to be, which is not that weird seeing that our leader is a descendant of Shapshal, as well that he opposes Ukraine and support Russia instead... As for the location of a Jewish Crimean Karaite community, there is none anymore, caused by the invasion of Crimea by Russia. However, if you want to meet Crimean Karaites, you will need to visit mainland Ukraine, and not Crimea, as since the invasion of Crimea by Russia in 2014, most of the remaining Jewish Crimean Karaites have left Crimea. The same applies for the other Jewish-Crimean community, the Krymchaks. I know other Crimean Karaites, as well Krymchaks, who visit the Menorah Center here in Dnipro, mostly living in the Dnipro, Zaporizhia, and Kherson Oblasts, although I did meet an elderly still Jewish Crimean Karaite who lives/lived in Lutsk. There is also a small Karaite (not Crimean) community in Kharkiv, they maintain also the Kenesa in Kharkiv, one of the few, if not the only, Kenesa which is still maintained fully by the Karaite community.

As far as I know, the Tatars and Karaites were not kidnapped en masse and taken to Lithuania and Poland, they were invited there as Crimea, at a certain point in History, was a part of the P-L Commonwealth.
My great-grandfather had Ashkenazi and Crimean Karaite ancestry💙 I hope more people will know about Karaite history and culture and of course I hope Crimea will be freed
What a splendid young man who know's the history of his community.I felt touched in my heart that I was actually able to attend a shabbat morning service in their synagogue in the jewish quarter in the old city of Jerusalem.
Very nice but a few corrections. Karaitika is Romaniotika is Koine Greek. Maybe a few hundred hebrew words but 100% mutually intelligible with modern Greek. Also the name of the village in 4:04 stems from Tsifut meaning tight with money, cheap in Turkish, not Jew. The name of the Jewish quarter in Constantinopole during Ottoman times was Tsifut Mahalle (obviously the spelling in Turkish is different, I write it phonetically).
There were a lot of Karaite Jews in Egypt. The went to Arab schools. Not foreign ones like many of the other Jews who tended to go to French and British schools.
The Jewish community has its fair share of hypocritical people who agree with the Qaraites on many things and love to fulminate against the rabbis, but are too chickenshit to break with Rabbinic Judaism.
@@ForeverRepublic my biggest issue with rabbinical judaism is bigotry towards those of paternal jewish and maternal gentile descent. Ok so what about the great prophet Moses and his son Gershom? The whole Gershomite line was a extremely important Levite family. So this matrilineality thing is ridiculous. My girlfriend is paternal jew maternal Berber gentile.

The genetic studies on the Crimean Qaraites prove they are from Israel like the various Jewish diasporas and geo-communities, and are not a Turkic people. Their own literature from the 19th and preceding centuries argue descent from the people of Israel and the Judah tribe in particular. But obviously you cherish your favorite delusions, inculcated in your recent ancestors by Seraya Szapszal and his team, way above the scientific and historical facts and you'll adhere to them through heat, sleet or snow, facts be damned.
"Asian" is a very broad category. Israel is in the Levant, which is in western Asia. Levantines are no less Asian than Indians, or Koreans, or north Siberian populations.
Karaitism is all about obeying Scripture (the Tanakh) alone and not rabbinical traditions. He made it out to be some dreadful extreme sect. If you want to learn about Karaites you should watch some teachings by Biblical scholar Nehemia Gordon.
My great grandpa was of this ethnicity. Many Karaites were part of mainstream Jewish society they adopted Yiddish last names and even spoke it. The modern Trakai ‘Karaites’ are mostly lipka tatars as the community got deported post WW1.
@@ZviJ1 that’s krymchaks of Crimea I’m pretty sure. Most qaraites were pretty society due to the mandatory 25 year military conscription from the tsar starting from 12 for most men. I think the Crimean side retained their culture better due to ottoman rule
@@prouddogmum At any rate, I cannot claim descent from any Qaraite geo-community. But I am indirectly related to the Grandfather of Shpola and despite that the last 2 generations of my ancestors were very secular, they did not turn their back on Jewishness altogether (and my dad became observant). So here I am, a non-gentile who subscribes to Scriptural Judaism.
I think you guys confused with the two. Yeah, there is a Karaite Judaism, and it's accepted by some Khazar Turks as the religion. Crieman Karaites are Tatar, and of course there are mixes as in any ethnicity. This dude could be not Tatar. I understand that but claiming as if all Crimean Tatars from Jewish background is very deliberate missing information. Not nice.
Karaite Judaism actually More about Spirituality. They do not wear Tefillin and put Mezuzah on their door. it it more about mentally loving the Lord with all your heart, soul, and mind. They also doesn't light canddles during shabbat nor do they separate milk and meat. because it states in Moses law "do not cook Young in their mother's milk." it doesn't mean you can't consume milk and meat. also they reject the Oral Laws because God gave Jews written Commandments.
Not all Karaites lived in Europe. They are originated from Middle East and North Africa (Egypt). Karaites still exists in Israel but Religious extremists wants all Jewish in order to be accepted In the Jewish communities have to accept the Talmud and live by halakha laws.
Seems like Anton wants to confuse readers into believing disproved obsolete notions such as the claim that `Anan b. Dawid (OBM) founded the Qaraite movement, which has been disproved by competent scholarship; both the Ananites and Qaraites continued to exist in parallel through the 9th century since the earlty 9th.
Also karaite Jews have more strict laws than orthadox in some ways, like we don't eat rabbinic kosher only karaite kosher which is rare we don't slaughter animals who are pregnant and it must be all four signs rather than a minimum of two. Some karaites believe chicken is not kosher. And so on and so forth
I wish I knew this guy’s name! I am of Kurdish and Walla Walla decent. My mother is half Palestinian and Walla Walla. My father’s family comes from Cuba and Poland, though their roots are in Kurdistan
And do anybody know if there are Egyptian Karaites in Egypt today who don't accept anybody as 'Karaites' according to them if they're not born into their racist sect or is that a lie?
What's your beef with them that motivated you to call them a racist sect? You do not divulge anything about yourself in yourt channel's description. It's very easy to sling mud at others while remaining totally anonymous, not showing one's personal photo and not sharing any descriptive details.
If you’re Jewish you’re not Persian though are you, you’re Israeli. Though today, Persian Jews do have Persian dna after spending thousand plus years there, of course they intermixed.
However most of the Jews in Turkey were Sephardim. ottomans took the ones Europe discriminated at the end of 1400. Karaites are minority in Turkey too now only total of 2000 left in Turkey and Europe.

The only known Jewish diasporic community to normalise nazaruth are the Habanim. But you do get many individuals throughout history like Rav Kohen HaNazir that take up the practice so Im sure individual Qaraim might have as well, just not wide spread.
Anton Chigurh both groups consider the other heretics, but that doesn’t mean rabbinical jewish communities had any authority over karaite ones (from which to exact punishment) or vice-versa Do you have a better source than this on Maimonides or are you just going to put words in his mouth: www.valleybeitmidrash.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Rambam-+-Karaites.pdf
Anton Chigurh lmao from the paragraph directly after your quote: “The children of these errant people and their grandchildren whose parents led them away and they were born among these Karaities and raised according to their conception, they are considered as a children captured and raised by them. Such a child may not be eager to follow the path of mitzvot, for it is as if he was compelled not to. Even if later, he hears that he is Jewish and saw Jews and their faith, he is still considered as one who was compelled against observance, for he was raised according to their mistaken path. This applies to those who we mentioned who follow the erroneous Karaite path of their ancestors. Therefore it is appropriate to motivate them to repent and draw them to the power of the Torah with words of peace.”
Genetics shows that Crimean Karaites are genetically very similar to Ashkenazi Jews and are half Middle Eastern (Levantine), half European (mostly Southwestern European).
They identify as such because they wanted the Russian government to view them as "indigenous" to the land. That doesn't change history or science. Isn't it funny that you label scientific evidence as "crap" because it doesn't fit your "anti-Zionist" narrative?

In the Middle Ages Karaite Judaism was enormous, just like Reformed Judaism is today.
10:02 "I'm gonna stop you, my arm is hurting" hahaha
As far as I know, the Tatars and Karaites were not kidnapped en masse and taken to Lithuania and Poland, they were invited there as Crimea, at a certain point in History, was a part of the P-L Commonwealth.
They were not kidnapped. They were invited at the request of Vytautas the Great. Look into it.
@@faithcross8109 And what did I say?
You should've let him keep talking. He was brilliant and very knowledgeable in his explanations.
Corey can you do more videos about the Karaites? There is a Karaite synagogue in Jerusalem, in the Jewish Quarter, on Karaite Street.
I agree, I'd love to see and hear more about them! I also just found out that the Israeli port city of Ashdod has a large Karaite community as well. 😊
My great-grandfather had Ashkenazi and Crimean Karaite ancestry💙 I hope more people will know about Karaite history and culture and of course I hope Crimea will be freed
Truly fascinating, thanks!!
Nice work Corey! This guy has a great grasp on history!
I love your coverage of karaitejudaism.
''Çıfıtkale'' you mean. This is also a turkish name. Both tatars and turks are turkic races so their languages are very similar.
Probably, it’s “Çıfıtkale” in Turkish, but “Çufut Qale” in Crimean [Tatar] or just “Qale” in Karaite (Karaim)…
What does it mean in Turkish?
@@Nehmi Çıfıt means jew (but it’s a pejorative word from the old language). Kale means castle.
@@ozanbayrak562 "Chufut" is not a jew, it means "a kike". Jew in turkic languages will be "yahud". Qale, of course, means a fortress.
What a splendid young man who know's the history of his community.I felt touched in my heart that I was actually able to attend a shabbat morning service in their synagogue in the jewish quarter in the old city of Jerusalem.
He's really handsome. Call me, brah.
Karaits took a significant part at Lithuanian culture either way Lithuanians are Baltics, nothing to do with Eastern Slavs... Peace shalom

I can t even concentrate on the video...
Im from isreal 🇮🇱
Very nice but a few corrections. Karaitika is Romaniotika is Koine Greek. Maybe a few hundred hebrew words but 100% mutually intelligible with modern Greek. Also the name of the village in 4:04 stems from Tsifut meaning tight with money, cheap in Turkish, not Jew. The name of the Jewish quarter in Constantinopole during Ottoman times was Tsifut Mahalle (obviously the spelling in Turkish is different, I write it phonetically).
Tsifut, I mean Çifut, means Jew in Turkish.
Some people think the Karaites are Khazars
Fred Perry no they are not
He’s a cutie
Tasfia you too 💖
Does this guy have any social media? He’s brilliant and he seems like the kind of guy who puts out a lot of great stuff
Fascinating!
There were a lot of Karaite Jews in Egypt. The went to Arab schools. Not foreign ones like many of the other Jews who tended to go to French and British schools.
I don't think the majority of Qaraites went to Arab schools. They definitely had their own school network of sorts.
Crimean Karaites are not Jews. They are Turkic Tatars. Like the Crimean Tatars. Complete differently people to Jews.
I'm Orthodox Jewish but in many ways I agree with Karaite Judaism.
The Jewish community has its fair share of hypocritical people who agree with the Qaraites on many things and love to fulminate against the rabbis, but are too chickenshit to break with Rabbinic Judaism.
@@ZviJ1 In all honesty, at least half of the world's Jews don't give a shit about rabbinical Judaism.

@noahtylerpritchett2682 I agree my brother.

I am part crimean karaite, crimean karaites are not from israel, they are turkic people, on the official crimean karaite website, they state that crimean karaim descend from huns, khazars, mongols, tatars, cumans and crimean goths. Alot of them look asian and there religion is not close to regular karaism, it is now more related to tengrism and they even call God "Tiengri" they have khazar vocab in the language as well, they have many turkic features, when I was a baby i even used to look asian, now i have a crimean tatar look, but I can confirm crimean karaites are turkic
We are more bl4ck than Asian since we are part Natufian who were 6% Ethiopic in general.
Such a stupid comment
Yeah Crimean karaites don’t look Jewish at all, but may hve one very distant ancestor who was. You should do dna test.
Karaitism is all about obeying Scripture (the Tanakh) alone and not rabbinical traditions. He made it out to be some dreadful extreme sect. If you want to learn about Karaites you should watch some teachings by Biblical scholar Nehemia Gordon.
He looks Turkish to me.
Couldn’t he spit the blue gum out before filming?
Fascinating
He looks just like my brother. Wow.
Chaya Bat-Tzvi your brother must be hot haha
so many garbage comments, very cool history
My great grandpa was of this ethnicity. Many Karaites were part of mainstream Jewish society they adopted Yiddish last names and even spoke it. The modern Trakai ‘Karaites’ are mostly lipka tatars as the community got deported post WW1.
If memory serves me correctly, the Qaraites of Halitcz (sp?) mimicked the sidelocks of Ashkenazim and Ashkenazc customs related to Torah scrolls.
@@ZviJ1 that’s krymchaks of Crimea I’m pretty sure. Most qaraites were pretty society due to the mandatory 25 year military conscription from the tsar starting from 12 for most men. I think the Crimean side retained their culture better due to ottoman rule
My family are Ponevezh Karaites
@@prouddogmum I'm certain it was the Qaraites. Definitely not Krymchaks. You're mistaken in this.
So here I am, a non-gentile who subscribes to Scriptural Judaism.
what is karaite, karaim turks?
A sect of judaism that began in 8th century Iraq.
Not nice.
What's this dude's name. Who is he?
There are Karaites in Northern California, USA.
so good-looking. good genes
Karaims are mixed of ethnic Jews and Cuman Turks
Their closest relatives today are Crimean Tatars, Krymchaks, Karachay-Balkars, Kazan Tatars and Kumuks
@@ai-kt3hy RE your first comment: I haven't seen any genetic studies confirm any Turkic admixture or ancestry.
What's his name?
Basia B Yes, they do exactly as it says, they don't bother with all the rabbinical world ideas.
Karaites are not to bright or know the Torah then because Deuteronomy 6:8-9 & 11:18 states otherwise.

They've never had any connection to Christinsanity in any form, nor were they Nezirim as per the actual Torah's definition.
The only known Jewish diasporic community to normalise nazaruth are the Habanim. But you do get many individuals throughout history like Rav Kohen HaNazir that take up the practice so Im sure individual Qaraim might have as well, just not wide spread.

Anton Chigurh both groups consider the other heretics, but that doesn’t mean rabbinical jewish communities had any authority over karaite ones (from which to exact punishment) or vice-versa
Do you have a better source than this on Maimonides or are you just going to put words in his mouth: www.valleybeitmidrash.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Rambam-+-Karaites.pdf
So 10 minutes of....a Lithuanian guy?
His background is simply a Crimean Kairite whose family have returned to Zion from the diaspora in Poland. It's very straightforward.
Mark Simons Polish then. A Polish immigrant.
I didn't.
