focusontheargument Ashkenazim mentality is no different the colonist Europeans , they consider themselves “better then” not all but quite a few. It’s actually because of the backward thinking that Jews whom come from Arab/Muslim lands are poor, uneducated because that is what they think of those Arabs & muslims, it’s quite the opposite in a lot of cases. My family came from Morocco & were very wealthy very educated & were basically force to leave Morocco only to be treated & put in second class camps as well as rank, employment, schools. How many in the Israeli government are of Sephardi or Mizrahim extraction? THATS WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE ISRAEL! Netanyahu what ever you think of him, his wife is well known to say & do insulting things against Sephardim & Mizrahim. I won’t & don’t forget that, it plays a part into that thinking. Who better to understand all that is surrounding you then Jews formally from Arab & Muslim countries? Israeli’s /Jews originated in the Middle East respect that, don’t suppress it. When Europe was stuck in the Middle Ages , Spain Egypt & most of the Middle East was giving the world mathematics & science. Your welcome 😘🧿

Being relative to victim is not the same experience. Also they lived in peace in Europe for generations, certainly from the Enlightenment period - the NAZI part was brutal but it was very short lived, so their historical experience is more positive.
Arab culture was more harsh experience over the ages, I guess.
Overall they might be more cautious towards Europeans but see Arabs as not as dangerous.

It's quite simple, Ashkenazim have a more liberal view due to them coming from Liberal Europe, as for Mizrahiim, they come from more local and Arab culture where it is more conservative in many cultural and social aspects, like faith in public life, abortion, gay rights and so on. maybe once upon a time israel was like that, but however now the country is slowly turning into another middle eastern country as the ultra right wing is slowly taking over the hearts and minds of israelis. Israel only has rights for Jews, and Arabs are considered as 'guests' rather than actual human beings who deserve some sort of respect. it is an aparthied nation where ultra fanatical jews live separately on the arab's own land, and are protected. so no, i don't think israel should deserve any sort of credit where free speech is concerned. The problems with the Arabs go back 100's of years in addition to colonialism. Israel however, only being born in '48, has caused tremendous conflict.

    • @benjaminr6153

xplosivelilly Yes and no, like you, I too am very concerned (to put it lightly) at the growth of right-wing politics like that of Naftali Bennett and it is true as well that Israel has shifted rightward. But, f/e, just this past week the Palestinian winner of Arab Idol had a concert in Israel attended by 10,000 people, including Palestinian members of the Israeli Parliament -- despite Mohammad Assaf having a couple of very nationalistic Palestinian songs, no one stopped him from performing or from people going to his concert, including Arab-Israeli Parliamentarians who are often and openly harshly critical of Israel, its government and Zionism. If you read Haaretz, one of Israel's most respected papers, it is full of criticism of the occupation and Israeli policy. So to regard the country or its populace as entirely brainwashed or reactionary is simply unfair and untrue.

@@xplosivelilly I shouldn't be replying to a 5 year old comment, but I'm genuinely intrigued how after listening to her speech, which justifies a right-wing, hawkish approach to the Palestinian problem, you came to the conclusion that "she will make peace within 1 year" followed by the typical left-leaning rhetoric about apartheid and general Israel-bashing.
Her position, though spoken very eloquently, is basically in line with that of the Israeli right... which has been dominating Israel politics for the last few decades.
You're right that Israel is becoming "another Middle Eastern country" (not sure why this is supposed to be a bad thing, especially to someone who's throwing around words like "colonialism" and "apartheid", considering that Israel and Jews are routinely accused of not being middle eastern enough by critics), but this is happening for precisely the same reasons that this woman explained. In other words, everything you are saying supports the left-wing position, except for your conclusion. Don't get me wrong; I agree with the conclusion, but I really don't understand how you got there.

I'm thinking that Ashkenazi vote left because, like the Jews in Europe going back to the 19th century, the left--whether liberal, Communist or socialist--meant humanism, progress, tolerance, and acceptance for the Jews, and a discarding of the traditional values, which included traditional antisemitism. So voting left came naturally. For the Mizrahim, I'm guessing that they're reacting to their not-so-great treatment by the Arabs when their families were still living in Arab countries, and their not-so-great treatment by Labour governments, which were dominated by Ashkenazis.

The reason could be that the majority of Ashkenazi Jews have European or North American passports. and therefore are not very concerned if things go wrong inside Israel, whereas Mizrahi Jews have no backup plan and need to vote for the hardline political party to ensure their future is safe.

    • @TheSealOfTheRose

The majority of Ashkenazi Jews in Israel do not have an either a European or an American passport of any kind only a small minority do. I don't know where you got that information. The vast majority; 90% of Ahskenazi Jews came directly from Europe to Israel either prior to 1948 or in the 50s as displaced persons or from what was or was soon to become soviet union and are not entitled to a passport. The amount of American Jews who emigrated there in tiny numbers, mostly from the 70s onwards a big increase in the 2000s barely accounts for 1% of Israelis and under 5% of Ashkenazim.

The reason is two folds. First, the ashkenazi brought kibbutzim and communism /left ideology with them in the 1880s and after that. Secondly, until the late 1970's, Prime Ministers were all ashkinazi and during that time and afterwards (much less now), ashkenazi looked down upon sephardic and mizrahi jews as peasants and uneducated and didnt want to mix with them in overall society. So all the peopel who grew up during that time who felt discriminated against vy the dominant ashkinazi society (who were dominant in academic, gov, business) voted for the other side.
The second reason : Since sephardic and mizarahi jews come from arab countries, they are aware of how the muslim world think, how they act, so they tend to be more hawkish than the naive ashkinazi. They understand that the arab world only respect strength so the people who believe in this vote for the more hawkish party. In addition, not counting the ultra orthodx, sepahrdic are more traditional, more religious than the ashkinazim and the Left in Israel traditionally is more secular/ less religious than the right.

  • @louis-vd3ur
    @louis-vd3ur 6 років тому +22

I will attempt to answer this as a Mizrahi living in New York. Ashkenazi come from a background of pain and suffering. Rabbis have always had strict control over them and any movement was to get away from that. Their "enlightenment" Era was crafted to escape strict rabbinical hold over them and to establish a European assimilation movement so that they could feel more in control and embrace more liberal ways of living and thinking, whether they decided to stay yiddish or learn their surrounding languages and culture. This has been progressing, giving birth to many different Ashkenazi Jewish experimental groups. Communism has been the latest in this liberal utopian escape. "The Great Experiment" which miserably failed and has killed more people than any other movement or war in history. Yes, Communism is the biggest political murder of ALL TIME.
Mizrahi on the other hand have always been integrated into their respective societies. Speaking the language, knowing the cuisine, and most importantly, contributing to the livelihood of their homelands. There is and was no rabbinic control to eschew things and mislead the large groups of people, especially when it came to cooperation with the land and its people. Mizrahi have been allowed to live the lives they wanted without fear from the outside, the law. With that said, Mizrahi feel very comfortable in"conservative" valued spaces. Islamic/ Arabic culture calls for the harmony of moral living which is all that we know to "vote" for. It's our nature. Mizrahi are much more behind the scenes than Ashkenazim, who seem to covet attention whether good or bad. Mizrahi like the status quo and don't mind being humble.

"Mizrahi on the other hand have always been integrated into their respective societies. Speaking the language, knowing the cuisine, and most importantly, contributing to the livelihood of their homelands." Sorry but this is absolutely comical, are you Jewish? Because this reads exactly like what an antisemetic European would say. Jewish people in Europe WERE well integrated, often spoke multiple European languages, and were usually more educated than the non-Jewish people in their homelands and contributed plenty to the livelihood and especially the CULTURE of the countries they lived in. Ashkenazim were often at the forefront of science, maths, the arts and so on in their European countries, they made up a significant part of the intelligentsia which is PRECISELY what European antisemites tried to use as a weapon against them and claim that the reason so many of the top doctors, philosophers, writers and artists in their countries were Jewish was because there was some massive conspiracy going on and Jewish people were "power hungry" and wanted to "take control of the world". People like Freud and Kafka and all the intellectual and artistic Jews who were successful were often used as points to "prove" this. Universities in Poland, Germany and other countries looked at the fact that a large percentage of the people graduating from their universities were Jewish and literally implemented quotas to restrict Jewish people from attending universities above a certain percentage because they believed them to be "over-represented". Jewish people were mainly established in metropolitan urban centres so the poorer gentiles in the rural areas associated them with so-called "metropolitan decadence" and this is where a lot of hatred, jealousy and antisemetic stereotypes came from. There were plenty of well off Jewish families who had been that way for many generations, and they had their apartments, belongings, paintings, etc confiscated by the nazis. So they too were people who had been educated, integrated and part of the middle and upper class and were all of a sudden forced into poverty which they had never known before. You seem extremely uneducated on the history of Jewish people in Europe. Despite antisemitism they managed to thrive in their countries and leave a huge footprint on the cultures of the places they lived. All this came crashing down around them in the 1930s but that doesn't mean that prior to that they were not speaking the language of the country they lived in or not "knowing its cuisine" and didn't "contribute to the livelihood" of their countries, I've never read something so utterly ridiculous said about Jewish people by somebody who is supposedly Jewish. There are literally neo-nazis nowadays in Europe who talk like this and say Jewish people never contributed anything and were just a punch of "parasites" but okay. They've never read a book in their lives either.

The lady at min 9 spoke the truth. She summed up the problem and the solution. As long as charlatans are using the rift between the people to secure their rule, the rift will never heal. It's what I call a catch 22.

I think the gentleman's perception from the 7 minute mark is good- that the "rules" being played by are that of the middle east, not Europe. But that raises a broader thought, which is that over time "rules" are pressured by modernity, something Ashkenazim from around the world have far more exposure to than the Mizrahim, who live surrounded by others who are only in recent years experiencing the forces of modernity: Industrial Revolution forces which affect feminist forces and religious norms and the choices science newly offers which solve problems which traditionalists are dogmatic about for practical reasons which no longer exist.
So yes, the politics of the right pervade most of the middle east, and when contrasted by a New York Jew like myself seem understandable in context over there in Israel, but nevertheless underevolved, purposefully so, by dogmatic forces. Again, this shows the unique way in which the Enlightenment forces are fought in Israel.

Actually, ashkenazim, in religion and politics seem to have a wider range. There is right, center and left.
Sefardim, religiously are either orthodox or traditional. But almost never secular, which seems to coincide with left. The answer may be found in sociology instead of ethnicity. Usually a more educated population has a substantial left/ secular following. Personally I think that it takes more imagination to be left/secular, as the lack of this imagination in my ethnic group- sefardim has been a sore spot for me.

I agree. To be a leftist takes a lot of IMAGINATION. While being right wing can come from objective analysis of Jewish-Islamic relations for the past 1400 years.

I can’t understand that people ( not only Israel I mean also all over the world) see Arab is all the same. It’s like you will say Sweden is the same a Spain. Of course we people are all the same but because that person from Spain is bad does mean hole Europe is bad. I’m Moroccan living in Holland. My father grow up in marocco with a mix of Muslims and Jews. I still go on holiday in the summer to marocco and I live next to a Jewish neighborhood. I never heard something bad happened over there or the Jewish people said they feeling treatened They are more proud Moroccan than me. But the world tells you all the Arab hate Jews and people believe. I never had the feeling I’m an Arab or what ever. And I will never want to have that ethnic feeling.
    O yeah I forgot ps,
I’m a Muslim and if you want to know about my Islam don’t listen to politicians don’t watch the news just look up on google live of the prophet

Mizrahi means "eastern/oriental", and Iran is in the east to Israel.
actually some jews from north africa don't like to be called "mizrahi" because they didn't came from the east, they usually call themselves Sepharadic.

In my opinion it's pretty simple , Mizrahim were hosted in a conservative society , (arab/islamic culture) and as such adopted (or more like preserved) conservative ideals.
while Ashkenazis were raised in a liberal left leaning society (the west) and as such they adopted leftist ideals .
russian ashkenazis adopted right wing ideals just like the russians them selves . as they've both seen the horrors of communism.
it's all about the society someone is raised in.
of course there's exceptions to this rule.
