I heard you mention this about 3 or so weeks ago and started walking backwards in the pool. I am 72 and go to water aerobics 8 times a week. I have added 10 minutes of backward walking every time. Have some others doing it too, Guess what? my knees feel much better. I'm trying (carefully) to walk backwards upstairs, too. Thanks for this video.

For people starting out, you can move the car out of your garage, and walk backwards slowly from one end to the other. This will save you from having to do this in front of neighbors.

Now I don't feel crazy! I've never been able to run/jog forward, but I could always run/jog backwards a considerable distance. I would speed walk a few blocks and then turn around and walk backwards a few.
I've never understood it until now but it always seemed to work different areas of my legs.

My balance is not great so I’m walking backwards down my hallway, then turning around at the end and walking backward the other direction. Feels much more secure than walking in an open area - I can reach out and steady myself on the wall if I need to.

Interesting. In Jr high at church camp in the mid 60's, there was a hill to get to the lodge from our camping cabins. Our legs got sore from going up the hill so much, so we turned around and went up backwards. We didn't know that we were ahead of our time!

I walk backwards regularly, and it REALLY helps my knees. it also helps with brain function.. and yes, go easy at first, it can be a little disorienting. be especially careful in my humble opinion if you have balance issues. so try holding on to a counter, or hand on the wall at home before trying longer distances. baby boomer age, fyi

I've also read somewhere that if one is walking on an uneven surface - say, at the shore on a beach - turning around and walking/running in the opposite direction on that same uneven surface (one leg/hip being lower than the other,) for the same distance gives the body a chance to sort of "even out."

Been doing this on a treadmill (backwards walk) at 3.7 to 4.0 speed with a slight incline. 6-7 minutes backwards out of 45 minutes. I hold the rails firmly. Been doing this for 3 years, except during gym Covid closures. Slightly helps knee pain, better for posture. Real knee improvement has come from swimming and stationary bike. Zero weight bearing issues on the knee, those last two methods of exercise.

power off treadmill counter intuitive but the steeper the incline the LESS resistance. I do lots of poweroff sprints at 12 percent and walk/run backwards for recovery. I put a pool noodle over the cross bar to cushion my back. This is using a True PS 100 treadmill.
Running/Walking forwards with the poweroff is also a way better workout less impact more muscle development ant with the incline really good for ankles , feet and toes.

Got told try running backwards as part of my warm up before running training.
You suggested to try walking backwards whilst using the lawn mower, terrible idea, wouldn't the roller flatten the grass before the cutter had chance to cut the grass😮

A tip for Golfers- Walking backwards: ok switch your electric golf trolley off then away you go. Dragging the weight of the trolley & clubs is great- as a reasonable load. Choose parts of the fairway to suit-& do at umpteen holes. A definite noticeable bonus. A great way to add a new fitness time dimension & easy.

Bob and Brad You guys are AMAZING 🤩‼️ I’ve got a question - I actually tried, today, to walk backwards on my Treadmill! Do you think that’s dangerous? Thank you for all your GREAT videos 🙏🏼❣️ Keep up the good work 👍🏼😃‼️ You’re helping me with my injuries & I’m certain you help thousands & thousands of people out there all around the world 🌎‼️ Stay safe & healthy 🙏🏼❣️, Lena from Sweden 🇸🇪 😊 (I just remembered that, as a kid, I found it a lot easier to skate backwards)‼️👍🏼😄

Hi Lena from Sweden. I'm not Bob or Brad however I've been walking backwards for years on my treadmill. It's only dangerous if you lose your balance and fall. I go barefoot, helps your balance and better for your knees. Try walking sideways on your treadmill as well, for hip strengthening

I frequently do a 4 mile walk around my neighborhood. I've been walking backwards at the points where the incline gets steep and when I turn forward to continue, I've got the energy in my knees back again! I must admit though, drivers tend to slow down and wonder what's going on, I guess that's why I prefer walking when the sun's just gone down for I don't intend to attract attention. For safety, I always scan the the sidewalk ahead b4 I turn around to make sure the sidewalk is flat and unobstructed.

I go down the stairs backwards. It's impossible to go down stairs forwards without having your knee go over your toe. I weigh too much which is hard on my knees, so backward is great for my knees. Please hold on to the railing!

Running backwards uphill is safer more challenging
However the opposite is true of downhill backwards running which is not recommended since chance of falling & falling with injury much higher as pointed out by worlds favorite Physical Therapists in my opinion of course lol.
