Watching Billy knock it out of the park never gets old !
The beauty of this song is that you could walk into any bar in any city or town and see stories like these playing out. It's real life captured in amazing lyrics. One of the best story tellers in the business. Saw him live in Philly last year. He was 74 years old and still has that voice and talent. This man has 3 greatest hits albums. THREE.
Billy Joel is a great singer-songwriter & composer from the 70's-90's. He is one of the best-selling music artists of all time. He has so many hits over the years. "Piano Man" is a great storytelling song. The whole "Stranger" album is great & one of my favorites. It had the songs "Just The Way You Are", "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)", "Only The Good Die Young", "She's Always A Woman", "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant".
Oh, YES, Jimmy, please react to The Stranger!??!!!
AND Vienna (waits for you)
AND Angry Young Man!
All of those are great my favorite song though is definitely scenes from an Italian restaurant
@@aaronhonigsfeld2735 Love that one, too. Annnnnnnnnnd, now I have an earworm!
Billy’s the GOAT
He started out performing at piano bars. He writes his own songs and music. Alot of it is based on his life. Here are some of songs. Baby grand with Ray Charles. You may be right. Movin' out. The river of dreams. Uptown girl. Still rockin roll to me. Honesty. Billy has a lot of different sounds to. Take care Jimmy
Billy Joel was one of my favorite artists growing up. I think Piano Man was just a reflection of his own experiences starting out in the music industry, and has more or less become his signature song.
Billy Joel is truly an all around entertainer. He does it all, singer, composer, lyricist, musician and performer. His music is very eclectic. He can write any style. His lyrics will get you every time. He is an amazing storyteller. His catalog is a deep rabbit hole worth diving into. Thanks for the reaction
This reaction is like watching a desk lamp reacting to a potted plant. The best bar room song in history and he's thinking about if he forgot to get bread at the grocery store
In '73 Billy Joel had issues with his recording company (who owned his songs and his name) and had In get away from NY so he, and his wife, went to live in Los Angeles for a few years until things were sorted. Since he needed work to pay the bills, but could not use his common name, he worked at a bar as a piano player using the name "Bill Martin" - which you see a poster at the end of the video.
So this is his story of working as a piano player at a bar, and when he sings the line "they say what are you doing here" - well, that actually happened. Can you imagine going to a lounge and getting the calibre of this "Piano Man" while you're out drinking with friends or alone.
All the stories on the song are based on people he met and observation while working at the bar.
For the longest time is in acapella , one of my favorites if Billie Joel
Billy Joel is an amazing artist and this is autobiographical song from time where he worked as a piano player after briefly stepping away from his music career. I recommend She’s Always a Woman and Just the Way You Are at minimum but he has so many great songs. Definitely strong pen take as you like to say!
Thanks, Jimmy. Billy Joel is a bottomless pit of talent...you keep going down and you keep finding more really good stuff. Thing about him is that he's a virtuoso pianist. A lot of songs you'll find most people requesting don't include a lot of album pieces with no lyrics. He could write jazz, rock, pop, bluegrass, country-western, etc. And he wrote all his own music and lyrics, and they weren't just common ballads or love songs. Stories populate a lot of his lyrics; you have to listen several times to catch everything. Do more!
Songs almost no commenters ask for by him: Travelin' Prayer, Ballad of Billy the Kid, Root Beer Rag, Prelude/Angry Young Man. If you get to these, you'll be blown away by just how eclectic he is.
Have you heard “We Didn’t Start the Fire”? Awesome song. Love it and Billy Joel.
Great reaction. Good song. One of the few songs an American can use as a drinking song while overseas to compete with Europeans.
Such a deep and rewarding rabbit hole is Billy Joel. This song was basically the story of his first professional gig. His second gig was - - well, mega stardom. But he started off in his basement and then headed west, where he became The Piano Man. I strongly suggest the following, for a good variety of Billy, as he composes in many styles and genres; Pressure, River of Dreams, We Didn't Start the Fire, Innocent Man, Big Shot and Scenes From An Italian Restaurant. I liked your reaction. Subbing. All the best.
Cold Spring Harbor was Billy's 1st album. The studio sped up the sound to make his voice higher. he left. Clive Owen resolved the issue but did not want to use his band. then Phil Ramone did The Stranger one of the greatest albums
He wrote this while performing at a Piano Bat in New York City in 1973.
He observed the people who were regular patrons of the bar.
He was at odds with his record company and couldn't perform under the name Billy Joel.
So he made money under the table under a different name.
A powerful song he wrote and performed in Goodnight Saigon.
Actually it was in Los Angeles when he was hiding out from a bad record deal.
@Bill Muller I forget what source I read it but it stated New York
@@firefighterchick your source is wrong. It was the Executive Room, Los Angeles. He wasn't living in New York at that time. He moved back there in 75.
@@firefighterchick Here's a reliable source Billy Joel himself on Australian 60 minutes. About 5 minutes in, he tells the story of Pian Man. ua-cam.com/video/M4nXhd7cPs0/v-deo.html
Love this song and always appreciated the story he's telling. Billy Joel is a legend. And there's much more than this one.
One of my favorite Billy Joel songs!
Billy Joel is definitely one of the greatest singer songwriters, I think this song was the start of a huge successful career
Great reaction. Try his New York State of Mind live at the Old Grey Whistle Test.
Got our tickets already for him and Stevie Nicks in KC! (August 2023)
"Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" by Billy Joel is quite the ride
Back in the 60s 70s 80s..Every lounge, bar had a piano bar in it.
We would following piano players...
Billy Joel, Award Winner, Song Writer, Singer, besides Fantastic piano Player.
Her toured with Elton John...Dual Pianos...
Might find a video.
River of Dreams is a good song.
Fantastic Live...
Billy Joel's 1st album **bombed hard**. To dodge his contract and manager, Billy spent months playing in piano bars under the name "Bill Mitchell" (You can see the name and his pic at the end of the vid)... and "Piano Man" is borrowed almost directly from various people he ran into. "WTF is a 'real estate novelist' you say?" Well Billy met a guy calling himself that, lol'd, and added him as a lyric. Billy was =clearly= a cut above 'background pianist' talent, so he often got asked "what was he doing there?" And Billy would also marry that waitress "practicing politics"
The song was supposed to be a nothingburger. Billy Joel's 2nd album came out with the exact name as the 1st, with "Piano Man" - and went 3x Platinum
My other favorites of his songs are Moving Out, Allentown and Goodnight Saigon. I would assume you've heard Uptown Girl but maybe not if you've never heard this one...
We didn’t start the fire 🔥 classic watch the video though
Classic song, I still can sing all the words. Lol🎶🎶💕💕🦋
You should really check out the live version of Theme from an Italian Restaurant.
Tell Her About It
I love this song and video, but I feel like the unfortunate placement of the scene where the waitress gets her behind slapped detracts from what I think is the greatest line of the song. "They're sharing a drink they call loneliness, but it's better than drinking alone." It's easy to miss that line because you're laughing at her throwing a drink in the guy's lap.
Come to music with an open mind
Billy had signed a deal with a record company owner/producer and recorded his first album but it was mastered at the wrong recording speed and so his voice sounded higher pitched than it actually was and so was a bit of a disaster.
He then left New York to basically hide away from the record company and wait out his contract, so he moved to L.A. with his wife (the waitress practising politics) and go a job for six months or so playing at a piano bar and this is the song he wrote based on his experience there.
