Billy Joel is a Grammy winning song writer and performer. He is also in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. You might like: We Didn't Start the Fire, She's Always a Woman, and Only the Good Die Young.
He had a bad recording deal, so he left town and worked for a while as a 'piano man' to pay the bills. He had to play under the pseudonym Bill Martin until his lawyers got him out of the deal. The people he sings about are all people he met while doing this.
My guy please react to “We didn’t start the fire”. It’s an education in itself, I feel you will enjoy it. Billy Joel’s catalogue is large. Take the dive .🎶🎶🎶💕🦋Great reactions ❣️
@@vohbovohborian28 Yes, but it can still be slang--most (all?) languages have slang. Here's a definition: "a type of language that consists of words and phrases that are regarded as very informal, are more common in speech than writing, and are typically restricted to a particular context or group of people." I think the use of "bread" for money fits that.
@@donnahughs9749 I think this is much more of an idiom than slang. The use of bread as an equivalent for money is extremely old. I believe that it is already referred to as such in the bible (give us this day our daily bread = give us what we actually need to exist). At least in Dutch this is a very common way to refer to money, and I'm sure it is the same in many other languages.
Twon acknowledges that in the video he was just confused because it’s still common slang today and thought that is was new slang not used 50 years ago.
Twon, you have opened another deep hole of great music. Billy Joel is a fantastic ride. Just a few titles to get you started: More than a woman to me We didn't start the fire Pressure Allentown Just the way you are Tell her about it Keeping the faith You may be right, I may be crazy Uptown girl A New York State Of Mind That should get you started. But remember that is only the tip of the iceberg. Billy Joel was huge in the 80's. One of my absolute favorites. You'll like him, great story teller. Also get ready and start listening to Bruce "The Boss" Springsteen.
@kevin mcconnell I feel you bro. But since he noted that Piano Man was made in 1973, and me saying he was huge in the 80's; I figured he would realize that Billy continue on through to the 80's and into the 90,s. Do we really have to spell out everything?
Since you seemed to really like the story-telling aspect of this song, I recommend "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant" for your next Billy Joel reaction. (It's pronounced "Jole".) But he has lots of good songs, and there much variety in his catalog. Some other good ones: "New York State of Mind", "Just the Way You Are", and "Uptown Girl".
What they don't show in the video is that during concert, he is playing the piano and the harmonica at the same time. He has a rig that puts the harmonica right in front of his mouth. He is a very talented musician and a great story teller.
SOOOO glad younger generations are finding and appreciating this genre of music! 😉 Billy Joel was in concert with Elton John back in the day …. Now that was epic! 😉
I was at that concert. Their pianos were facing each other. Elton John performed Billy Joel's "Piano Man" and Billy Joel performed Elton John's " Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". It was one of the best concerts I've been to.
Billy Joel is a great story teller in the songs he writes. Everyone in that Bar has their own stories and Heartaches, because as they say..."We're all Human. God Bless You Friend.
Piano bars are making a comeback, finally. A piano used to be the main form of entertainment in bars, until jukeboxes became common. It was a great way to create a sense of connection among people, sitting around a piano singing together in a relaxed setting.
"It's sad and it's sweet and I knew it complete/When I wore a younger man's clothes" is such a great line. And the older I get, the better it is. And "bread" was a common term for money in the 60s and 70s.
There's some truly wonderful and descriptive turns of phrase in this song. "Paul is a real estate novelist, who never had time for a wife," paints a picture of a guy working hard in the real estate business, having it take up far too much of his time, and writing bits of a story that he yearns to publish yet deep down knows he never will, all in a single line. "Yes they're sharing a drink they call loneliness, But it's better than drinking alone," is an image that struck me as so sad and heartbreaking when I first heard it in the early 1980s, and still does to this day.
Dude billy Joel is a legend and I'm glad you found him I found you through tom McDonald crazy how music crosses so many boundaries if you like this you should watch (mamma told me not to come by Three Dog Night)
In a number of interviews Billy Joel has stated that 'We Didn't Start the Fire' is one of his least favourite songs, yet with its catchy music and succinct historical statements it really caught people's attention, to the point where lots of people mentioned they've had to look up incidents or people mentioned in the song ( for example I had to search to find out who Syngman Rhee, Chou En-Lai and Starkweather were when I heard it). Something that's equally noteworthy about it is how many people have posted UA-cam videos with them singing their own lyrics to the original music. Either they're singing about more recent historical events, or about other topics - there must be hundreds of videos of "We Didn't start the Virus" about COVID-19 set to Billy's music.
ANY Billy Joel (Not pronounced "Joe-L) song is FANTASTIC and they are all different from each other, he is a masterful song writer, lyricist and musician. He doesnt have a bad song in his entire catalogue. I have seen him live in concert twice and he puts on a FANTASTIC show! Looking forward to seeing you react to MORE Billy Joel songs! LOVE your comments and reaction!!
When you were asking since when have they been using the term bread, just made me think of the saying “ The thing that hath been, it is that which Shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun”!
I'm an old Man ; I have Always Loved Billy Joel , and it's nice to see a good young Man discovering his music 🎵🎶 I strongly encourage you to go down the Billy Joel rabbit hole ; you'll really enjoy it
This was his first hit. He never looked back. Pre-Covid, he was playing at Madison Square Garden once a month, he holds the record with 77 sold out shows at that venue. He will be adding to that record he is scheduled to appear Nov and Dec 2021 and Jan, Feb, March & April of 2022. These are to make up the six shows that were cancelled due to COVID. That will put him at 83 sold out shows and you know he is going to break 100 by August 2023. I saw him there in February of 2018 and I il see him again on my next New York City holiday, maybe in August 2023 :)
He lived about 2 miles from where I live now. There’s one song Allentown about SteelStacks that closed back in the 1990s that was the second biggest steel company in United States . His dad was the beer salesman for my dads restaurant.
Thank you Twon, for playing Billy..greatest storyteller of all time. Can so believe he still sells out concerts at Madison Square Gardens every month… and seriously, the crowds sing every word back to him, it’s so incredible to watch it brings me to tears!! Scenes from an Italian Restaurant Don’t Go changing River of Dreams Just a start for you! You will enjoy this, I promise ! Love you, love your reactions. Peace
One of my favorites by Billly Joel was " A Matter Of Trust " ..if you decide to watch it, make sure you watch the official music video..as always, I enjoy watching your expressions as you react, young man..it's nice to see the younger generation watch and enjoy the music we grew up with..I for one, am a baby boomer born in the 50's and have lived through many genres of music..Enjoy yourself with these songs and God bless you ❤
Billy Joel's lyrics alone, even without the music, would make top notch poetry. He tells a story and really makes you feel like you're there. And on top of that, his song writing is incredible in every way. His melodies, his harmonies, the song forms, everything. I think it's safe to say there's never been a bigger talent than him. If you get a chance, check out and react to She's Always a Woman. That's another favorite of his!
This is one of the greatest singer/songwriters of all time. He’s an American treasure! I’m also glad you’re discovering this music too! Love your reaction.
Brooooooooo...Billy Joel is one of the greatest song writers of all time,a living legend and a national treasure. This is actually a true story. You are a young guy so I guess it's understandable that he's new to you but do yourself a favor and listen to all that you can. Any Billy Joel concert is a 2 hour sing along and I hope to see him again soon. You should check out a live version of this song, perhaps Yankee stadium or Shea stadium. Thanks for the great reaction and enjoy the journey
Oh man ~ where do I begin? Billy Joel is one of those singers that you MUST know about. He has SO many hits, it’s ridiculous. My suggestions would be Scenes from an Italian Restaurant, Only the Good Die Young, Just The Way You Are, She’s Always A Woman, The Stranger, Movin’ Out, My Life, and It’s Still Rock & Roll to Me. All excellent! Enjoy!
The line about "put bread in my jar" is talking about his 'tip' jar. It's making a reference to the old saying about people working to "put bread on the table"
Billy Joel has an unbelievable catalogue of songs - - written and performed - - it's all different - try Goodnight Saigon, Honesty, Scenes from an Italian Restaurant, My Life, River of Dreams, Big Shot; too many to list. He started around in the late 1970s. Piano Man is a song that makes people stop and sway and sing together in bars and stuff when it comes on.
So glad you loved him, he's one of my top ten artists of all time. He has an amazing catalogue and it's a very deep rabbit hole, he does so many styles aswell. If you see him sing this live you'll see he plays the harmonica for it aswell with a harness strapped to his shoulders . Here are more great songs of his: "Uptown Girls" is one of my favourites. Billy Joel songs: A Matter Of Trust An Innocent Man Back In The Ussr Ballad Of Billy The Kid For The Longest Time Honesty "It's Still Rock And Roll To Me" Just The Way You Are "Leave A Tender Moment Alone" Matter Of Trust Modern Woman New York State Of Mind "Only The Good Die Young" "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" "She's Always A Woman To Me" Tell Her About It The Entertainer We Didn't Start The Fire
The way I've come to see this song is that it's about how we all have our own ideas about where we want to be in life or what we want to achieve, and bring ourselves down because we compare ourselves to our highest ideal self. And that we tend to think that's just us, when in reality everyone relates to that to some degree- and it's a personal journey we all go through in our own way, and in the end does it even matter if we can be happy with each other as the people we are today?

Oh yes, Pianoman is a very strong song about people who are lonely, and just taking a time out from the hell they are living. And yes old music can do something when you really listen to the words in the songs.

Billy Joel is awesome! Here's my favorites of his: An Innocent Man, She's Always a Woman, It's Still Rock and Roll to Me, She's Got a Way, Movin' Out, The Longest Time, This Night, We Didn't Start the Fire.
This song was written about a time in Billy's life when he was trying to break a bad record deal and was playing at a piano bar in L.A. under the name Bill Martin...
Billy Joel was one of the superstars of the 70's and 80's and a poet, he wrote all his own music. "She's Always A Woman" is both sweet and cruel at once. Or for some young rebellio try "You May Be Right (I May Be Crazy)"
It's called "storytelling" through the great lyrics of a song. . .And please don't listen to any of your "friends" who probably believe nothing great was created before they were born. You seem smarter than that, and this song proves that there were very talented people around LONG before you and your friends were "around." Glad you appreciate it!
Billy is one of a kind and he ruled the early 80s. Check out New York state of mind, Allentown, uptown girl, we didn't start the fire and oh so many others
The very next Billy Joel (pronounced Jole) song needs to be "New York State Of Mind" and the live video really shows off his amazing gift as a pianist. Great songwriter--The album "The Stranger" has so many great tunes. His later stuff sounds more commercial, but the guy is one in a million.
It is called songwriting at a high level. Welcome to the 70’s Sir.
Billy Joel is a Grammy winning song writer and performer. He is also in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. You might like: We Didn't Start the Fire, She's Always a Woman, and Only the Good Die Young.
Love I didn't start the fire 🔥
Only the Good Die Young - one of my favorites!
I'll add "Honesty" too!

True.
First rap song.
It's a must
Yes yes and also "Pressure"
'Bread' is slang for $$$- they were-'TIPPING' him, for playing their requests.
Damn, now I feel older than dirt, bread, lids, when ballin' wasn't basketball

Gives me chills
Great line
You don’t need a video, if you just listen you would conger up the same view in your brain. He paints the picture in your brain.
i agree, the video kind of ruins the song
He totally does
I've never seen the video til now and I wish I hadn't. Even Billy Joel himself was against videos for his songs

One of the best storytelling ballads ever written. In his early years from this song forward he was on top of the music world.

One of the greatest songs of all time
Billy Joel has a Huge catalog of hits...prolific writer. Review We Didn't Start the Fire.
My favorite Billy Joel song is still "Just the Way You Are" from 1977. 🎶👍 Also, I just gotta say, I come here for your smile. 😊
Billy Joel is amazing.❤️
Billy is one of a kind and he ruled the early 80s. Check out New York state of mind, Allentown, uptown girl, we didn't start the fire and oh so many others
have not listened in long time,, forgot how good his music is! Thanks!!
A song I think so many of us can relate to at at least one time in our lives.
Billy has such a great voice.
Your joy at experiencing an old favorite song is everything.
Please go down the Billy Joel rabbit hole! You'll be amazed!
ive loved this guy since i was a kid
The very next Billy Joel (pronounced Jole) song needs to be "New York State Of Mind" and the live video really shows off his amazing gift as a pianist. Great songwriter--The album "The Stranger" has so many great tunes. His later stuff sounds more commercial, but the guy is one in a million.
This is just like his own story...how he started out...and he plays harmonica too.
oh, music. the universal language, the best medium for the art of story telling
