Man you are a blessing for 2 weeks my husband hadn’t been able to get into his truck and we was about to call a locksmith until I found your video. This was a blessing. Thank you so much
Thank you friend I am from Russia, we have these cars a rarity. I was very surprised that I would put the battery on charge and would not be able to open the car with the key. It was always possible on Land Rover and BMW. I have a 2018 Ford F150 and there are differences! There are only 2 wires on the left. I connected them and everything WORKED. I don't know what I would do without your video. You are a super dude. Thank you very much. Yes, I'm all wet because it was raining and a river flowed under my machine. I ate it all in cold water at +2 degrees Celsius, but thanks to you I DID IT. THANKS THANKS THANKS and hello to you from Russia
You saved me. Driving a rental. The thing was packed with groceries and the doors just locked us out. Took maybe 5 minutes to pop the lock. Wife was still on the phone with triple a. Thanks!
I am currently sweating at 10:30 on July 3 with my vehicle in the driveway keys locked in it and 160 something dollars worth of groceries melting away. It’s gonna be a good night. 🇺🇸
Thank you for this video... I replicated what you showed and it worked great for me. Was able to unlock my truck and am now recharging the battery. Thanks again ! Great video !
THANK YOU!! I had to do the same thing for my sprinter van. The batter drained, and apparently the locking mechanisms in BOTH the doors with manual locks are broken on the inside. (Perfect storm.) I hooked up a boost unit directly to the starter and the frame and was able to unlock my doors. You are a LIFE SAVER!!!
I purchased my Halo jump box off of qvc approximately 5 yrs ago and this thing still holds a charge for a year and even then it still doesn't need to be charged but i do it anyway just to make me feel better. BEST purchase ever!! Thx for the tip in this video!!
This is one thing that's better about older vehicles. They have mechanical linkage where you don't need to rely on a working battery to open the vehicle's doors.
@@scottdhorn Sure, so I can lock thieves out (which I've done for decades by not leaving anything valuable in the car) or I can take a risk on locking myself out in an emergency (when I likely won't have ten minutes for this trick, or a jump box where I can get to it). This is about the only thing I dislike about my 2015 Fiesta -- all the locks on the car are electric. Doors will open from inside, and the trunk safety latch is mechanical (required by Federal law), but from outside the car, keys or not, if the doors are locked and the battery is dead, I'm locked out. And I don't know if it's even possible to reach the starter from underneath -- surely not without jacking the car up (oh, sorry, jack's locked in the trunk, too). My dad (who's now 85) used to tell me "Locks are to keep honest people honest." No lock will keep a determined thief out. Now, how much effort do I want to take *every single day* to get where a thief can get in seconds just by not caring if it costs me a couple hundred bucks to repair what he broke to get in?
@@scottdhorn Can't get to the alternator, either, if the hood is closed. The latch is inside the locked car. No trailer plug on a no-hitch base model. My solution to theft of the vehicle is the same as to theft of contents -- drive something no one wants to steal. They don't know why I love my Fiesta (hint: fill once a week while commuting 40 miles each way five days a week, and only takes 11 or so gallons).
@@SilntObsvr If you don't have 10 minutes and a jump box for this trick, what good is a car with a dead battery even if you can get in it in an emergency with a standard lock?
@@polarys425 Well, remember when cars had clutches? Even if there was no battery installed, you could usually get a start by rolling down a slope and dropping the clutch in 3rd gear (turn on headlights first, otherwise you could damage the alternator). Heck, my first car was an automatic and could do that. But the dual-clutch in my Fiesta is electric, so even if you could roll-start the car (you can't, as far as I can tell) you couldn't do it with an actual dead battery.
Thanks for the Great Video, i have a 2002 ford explore key inside, and dead battery, and follow you video as soon a connected the jumper less than 30 seconds my door where unlock. Thanks again worked great.
Great info.. I thought of this but I had no access to the starter on my bmw x5. What I ended up doing is pulled the license plate light and identified ground with a multimeter continuity test. Then hooked cables up to it from another car... and boom it unlocked.
Hell yeah man this video helped me out this morning... Cold weather got my battery and had to use the battery charger just to get the doors unlocked to pop the hood thanks for the help
I have the key code to unlock my truck so I leave my keys inside. Battery died I was so close to breaking a window and I found this video. God what a saver I really appreciate you for this one...
I would guess that you had collision damage to the driver’s door or a driver’s door handle removal in the vehicle history. The metal key should always lock and unlock the driver’s door without any power. Incomplete reassembly after body work likely left the metal key backup mechanism not properly connected.
I bought a brand new 2015 and my dad drove it and didn't realize his knee hit the switch and turned in the dome lights... Battery went dead and I couldn't open the door with the actual key and I know for sure that door had never been touched unless it was at the dealer befoee I bought it with 7 miles on it
Fords are also known for the little clip holding lock rod in to come off usually when someone tries to slim jim from lock out like I have 3 times lol been running Fords over 40 years now
I just tried this and it worked. And I’m a girl. Lol. Thank you so much saved me a tow to dealership. Next is getting a new battery so it doesn’t go into save battery mode again
Interesting. Thank u fir sharing. This guy in the parking lot locked his key in his truck. I went on UA-cam to find a helpful video. And found this video. The guy in the parking lot took the driver side small window off, and got in. I showed him your video. This technique would have been easier.
It worked on my gold wing too. Also, did it on my convertible, good thing too, cuz if I hadn't been able to unlock the doors, I might not have been able to get the top up before it rained.
Hi Great Tip, I've been working on cars over 50 years and never thought of. My 1st car I had 2 start on the starter till I found my bad connection. I got a Halo jumper like your GB40 but if you have no power it won't give the power to start, has a protection circuit that checks your connections so you don't short things out or get sparks. This method would have worked with my earlier jump starters.
Nice trick. I helped someone with a similar issue on a different truck. Disconnected his batteries and locked himself out, vehicle only unlocks with a key fob. I used a long pry bar from underneath to unlatch the hood.
Thank You for making this video. I came out to a dead battery on my 2013 model and my key would not manually unlock the door (that’s the next repair to work on). I used a battery charger with small leads to get to the starter on this model (tight space above the skid plate. Great tip… Thanks!
@Eddie McMahan Did you not watch the video? He tried the key. It turned the lock but there was a problem with the mechanism so would not work.A spare key would not have worked either.
Yeah you should keep your jump box on your being the whole time! LOL because I keep my jump box in my car. Is there a place to Hide a Jump Box Box? Ha ha 😂 No pun intended.. Great video 🤑
Great video. This same thing happened to me on my Ford F 150. However, I first used a slim Jim and I got the door unlocked. My second choice was going to be using my portable jumper on the starter. (perhaps to charge the battery). Well, now that I saw your video I know it'll work too. Thank you.
He needed the cars remote to open the doors. The doors still would be locked even with the boost . He’s actually not doing that at all . You are a lifesaver! Here was my situation. The battery on my grandson's Subaru WRX was dead. The key fob didn't work because the battery was so dead (later I found that it only had about 2.8 volts). His key was not locked inside, but it turns out that the key that he got with the car when he bought it a couple of years ago, works in the ignition (and glove compartment), but not the door lock! It turns out that since he had a key fob, he's never used the key to unlock the door. A previous owner must have replaced the door lock, but not the other two. He only has one key - I've warned him about the perils of only having one key. Thanks again for documenting and posting this solution!
That's why I put external jumper cable sockets on my trucks basically just cables from my battery or batteries to a POS and neg welding lead recepticles that correspond to my modified jumper cables which plug into them somewhere on the front of the truck or facing down behind the bumper .saves me from having to open the hood when jumping any one of the dozens of peices of equipment we have sitting around during the farming off season or if I need a jump myself and it doesn't cost much to set up.(welding lead twist lock connectors )
You should try One of those little genius jump boxes... I Have one that's about the size of 4 cigarette packs your at packs taped together... I got it for on my motorcycle but it jumpes my Dodge Diesel trucks. It's a lot less Is hassle than dragging wires around
Worked like a champ on my 04 F150! I might have a parasitic drain on my battery probably from my amp. Battery completely died after not really driving it for a few weeks and found my ignition key doesn't unlock my door (maybe the lock is just froze up or something) so with out the fob I couldn't get in but with this trick it gave me enough to use the fob. Thanks!
Great video! It's really important to have a good battery these days in your vehicle. Heat (summer) destroys a battery. Cold (winter) is when we find out how hot it was last summer. In today's vehicles I think a battery checkup would be wise each fall!
You aren't breaking in. This will only work if your car has a dead battery and the locks are all electronic. You still have to have the FOB in hand and for most ppl if they have that then they have a key on the same ring. Very few cars have all electronic locks for this very reason.
Not for lots of older cars. My mothers the battery died, we have the fob, but the key doesn't work in any of the locks on the car. When keys are replaced by anyone other then the dealer half the time they only work in the ignition
You're so lucky in TX. It happens to me with -27C (apx.5F) with snow on the ground. Low bat.= no key works and you cannot open the hood. We had to call the road side service. Now I have installed a short cable, (with standardized connector, like to use with solar in camper), coming from the battery directly and hanging down, so I can reach it from underneath. Freezing cold with snow on the ground is not inviting growling much under the car.
I thought the keys were locked inside the truck, so probably the remote too. Also, didn't you say he disconnected the battery too? So wouldn't that make the red cable at the starter dead? I'm also wondering why the key didn't work in the door?
On many vehicles, the key just engages an electric switch which activates a solenoid that actually unlatches the door. He may have had the remote from a second set of keys for that vehicle. The red cable is not the same one that is directly attached to the battery. It probably attaches to a solenoid or a distribution panel that provides the positive electricity for the rest of the vehicle. I had a similar problem on my Ford Escape. Because the starter wasn't accessible, I drilled a hole through the hood and used a stiff piece of wire to apply voltage to the positive battery post. My battery was totally dead. Went to a used car lot, found the same vehicle as mine and measured the distances so I knew where to drill.
@@kjc1878 He's supplying a separate 12V source to the car through the red terminal on the starter motor. In other words, he's backfeeding 12V through that red cable back to the system. Manual door key lock could have activated an electrical latch.
@@flick22601 unlikely there is a solenoid. this is safety thing. most cars including the f150 have only one door with a lock cylinder, if your battery is dead how would you get in the car if the key cylinder is actuated by a solenoid ?
Nice to know. However only if you have access to the starter. Mines blocked can't get to it. Finding hood release through the side fender is my best option.
Great tip! I was with you all the way ... until you opened the hood and showed the negative battery cable had been removed (to simulate the dead battery). I thought you were merely using the starter contacts to get power from your jumper device to the battery, but not if the neg battery cable was disconnected. So now I'm a bit baffled as to how this actually worked. Maybe the battery pack is acting as the battery, and the negative cable on the starter connects to the vehicle electronics (I didn't think so, but...), allowing you to open the doors??
the whole car is a negative wire...you can connect the negative lead on any engine part...the red wire on the starter will back flow current into the fuse box...to the key solenoid control/fob brain
I did the same thing for my 2006 Ford Escape except the starter was located at the top of the engine and inaccessible. However, the alternator is located at the passenger side of the vehicle and towards the rear of the engine with a positive connection attached to the top of the housing. The solution was to remove the wheel and attach a small jumper cable to it while at the same time connecting a negative/ground jumper cable to the vehicle's body, or frame, and allow it to charge for awhile and then use the key fob to open it....for anybody who has had difficulties opening an older model Ford Escape with a useless key and a dead battery! .. 😎
@@ugovee1686 Remove the front passenger side tire off for easier access to the alternator and then locate the wire attached to the top of the alternator, it's bolted down with a 10mm nut, and attach your positive jumper cable to it. The negative cable from your booster can be attached anywhere on the body or frame...hope that helps..😎
Thank you so much, you are a life saver…my wife and kids were locked in my F150 for 1/2 an hour…and after watching your video within 5 minutes i had them out… 😂😂😂
Just power back to the battery through the 7-pin RV connex and you're in. No crawling, no grease, no laying on the ground. Why do people make things complicated?
@@desertodavid That is primarily why I made this video ... attach that trailer B+ power wire before you need it. .... an ounce of prevention, and all that ... right? When I needed it, although I had the connection established, I had my Power Supply locked in the same car of which I was locked out of. Bad planning on my behalf, I admit. Fortunately I was at home where I had access to my battery charger and an extension cord! Don't get caught without a Plan B!
I just learned something new! Thanks. I am going out to make sure I know where my starters are in my Jeep Gladiator and my wife’s SUV. As you mentioned in the video, always keep a booster battery in your vehicle.
Good video, locked the keys in a '95 Lincoln continental. knew the door code for the ford keypad but battery dead. did just as you did then entered the keypad number to unlock. And all those with a forb Lincoln, Mercury keypad who don't know the numbers, the number for your is locate inside, the like continental is in the trunk on the decklid. there was a trim panel center portion in bid numbers, like the size of my fist. Explorer, 2010 is under one of the under trim panel rear side glass rear area. Google you info finds location. Finding it while you aren't locked out is essential but first look in tour owners manual. Please forgive me high jacking you page, hope I didn't offend you.
I've had to get into a couple of locked cars with dead batteries. I found that if you turn the key and hold it, then pull the door handle at the same time , the doors opened. I don't know if that would work on every vehicle, but it's worth a try.
If you have a long thin screwdriver wrap tape round the shaft leaving ends exposed, clip red jump lead on handle end and black to any bit of metal, you can reach awkward starters, works a treat .
I had the same problem with my son in laws van but the drivers door handle was broke off and a dead battery we messed with it for an hour then grabbed a hammer and knocked the window out now I find your video a week later in my recommendations thats my luck with vehicles
You say to put a jump box in each car glove box. If you are out from home, and the battery is totally dead and locked and you can’t get in, then how do you get the jump box out of the glove box?
You have someone give you a jump with jumper cables just like you would use your jumpbox under the car. You hook up the cables to your starter same way.
@@JJBanuelos Ahhh. Very good. Another way, if you have a plug on the back of the vehicle for a trailer, and you have a couple 9 volt batteries or a cordless tool battery, and a little bit of wire, you could power it enough to get the door unlocked through the plug. But you MUST know which is positive and negative before you do it.
Dude i appreciate that tip i knew i had to buy a new battery but didn't think i would get locked out like i did and this saved my window and a bigger hole in my bank account 😅
Given the situation having it in (not on, hahaha... Sorry) your car would be moot. Sooo.. putting it outside the vehicle in the Bed locker would be a novel idea. Great information. Thanks!

You should try One of those little genius jump boxes... I Have one that's about the size of 4 cigarette packs your at packs taped together... I got it for on my motorcycle but it jumpes my Dodge Diesel trucks. It's a lot less Is hassle than dragging wires around
Situation just happened to me, with my F-150. I tried this and it worked like magic. Thanks for the tip.
Awesome! 👍
Thank you, i am recently widowed. I have been so frustrated with vehicles. Your video gave me the answer i needed!😀👍
Sorry to hear about your loss & glad I could shine a little light for you!
What about the fords whith the selinoid on the firewall. This wont work.
Totally agree
Since I don't drive every day, I keep a trickle charger on all year around. Extends the life of the battery and it's always fully charged.
@@TXH1138 great tip!
You ever seen ' the breakfast club'
Thank you! Bought a new car battery and couldn’t get it in due to being locked out. I used the new car battery and jumper cables to accomplish this.
I would’ve never thought of this. Thank you.
👊🏼
I read this being done on Reddit but never actually seen a video on it. I just tried it on my 2012 mini Cooper country man and it worked 👍
You aren't breaking in. This will only work if your car has a dead battery and the locks are all electronic. You still have to have the FOB in hand and for most ppl if they have that then they have a key on the same ring. Very few cars have all electronic locks for this very reason.
Yes that’s true. 🍺
Nice yeah I guess this wouldn’t work in every day situation but pretty cool you made your own way
I thought the keys were locked inside the truck, so probably the remote too. Also, didn't you say he disconnected the battery too? So wouldn't that make the red cable at the starter dead? I'm also wondering why the key didn't work in the door?
Exactly b.s. the cable wasn't hooked up. Plus the key itself would of open the door manually.
If the battery was connected to begin with he could have just used the remote and not needed to make this video.
Nice to know. However only if you have access to the starter. Mines blocked can't get to it. Finding hood release through the side fender is my best option.
The video title says the keys were locked in the car. Apparrantly they werent.
Haha 🤷... Nice catch ....
@@jesusischrist1527 different options with a keypad
Sorry it says that in the title but not the case in this situation. Will make a video for that situation soon.
Great video it help me unlock my truck i was about to break my window thanks boss
This helped me in my case with a dead battery, Thanks a lot👍😀
👊🏼 Thanks for watching
I had to do this once. I just made a jumper wire for the trailer tow connector and hooked up my Dewalt 20V battery to unlock.
Excellent video, great info!
Thanks
Great video. I wonder what percentage of vehicles have adequate access to the starter.
Good question, a lot of bigger suvs & trucks are pretty simple. It becomes more difficult with smaller vehicles
Your correct the jumper device basically takes place of the battery. Even if both battery connections were removed this would work the same way.
@@JJBanuelos not so fast my friend
Well he did say at the start of the video that the battery had been disconnected due to a lights on/off ghost issue.
All that's left to do is find out why the lights were going on and off. Good luck.
the whole car is a negative wire...you can connect the negative lead on any engine part...the red wire on the starter will back flow current into the fuse box...to the key solenoid control/fob brain
Thank you my good man. Helped get me into my 2010 F-150. Had enough juice for me (my fiancé) to punch my code In to get it unlocked.
I did the same thing for my 2006 Ford Escape except the starter was located at the top of the engine and inaccessible. However, the alternator is located at the passenger side of the vehicle and towards the rear of the engine with a positive connection attached to the top of the housing. The solution was to remove the wheel and attach a small jumper cable to it while at the same time connecting a negative/ground jumper cable to the vehicle's body, or frame, and allow it to charge for awhile and then use the key fob to open it....for anybody who has had difficulties opening an older model Ford Escape with a useless key and a dead battery! .. 😎
What wheel are you supposed to remove from and attatch the cable to?
@@ugovee1686 Remove the front passenger side tire off for easier access to the alternator and then locate the wire attached to the top of the alternator, it's bolted down with a 10mm nut, and attach your positive jumper cable to it. The negative cable from your booster can be attached anywhere on the body or frame...hope that helps..😎
@@dukeweekusk Thanks for clarifying! I will try this on 2009 Ford flex and let you know how it went
@@ugovee1686 Good luck!! .. 😎
Nice good to know I’ll try that next.
Joe, How are you going to get power back to the battery when it's disconnected?
@@desertodavid That is primarily why I made this video ... attach that trailer B+ power wire before you need it. .... an ounce of prevention, and all that ... right?
When I needed it, although I had the connection established, I had my Power Supply locked in the same car of which I was locked out of. Bad planning on my behalf, I admit.
Fortunately I was at home where I had access to my battery charger and an extension cord!
Don't get caught without a Plan B!
Thank you 🙏🏻 I am in the same boat now I am charging my jumper box for this exact reason
Awesome let me know how it works for you!
@@JJBanuelos 15 seconds total worked great. Now the dual battery 3 day slow cycle charge. Thanks again

Brilliant. Imma hook up a wire just for aux battery source in case my battery dies. My car is usually parked nowadays whilst I work from home.
Great idea!
That genius boost is a pretty good piece of equipment I own two of them carry around with me all the time worth their weight in gold
Worked great on my 2010. Many thanks for sharing!
I just learned something new! Thanks. I am going out to make sure I know where my starters are in my Jeep Gladiator and my wife’s SUV. As you mentioned in the video, always keep a booster battery in your vehicle.
Thanks!
Booster does no good if it's locked inside
@@supersnot4 Good point. Not a problem in the pickup. The booster is in the truck bed. Big problem in the, SUV unless pickup is nearby.
This helped me get in to my F250 when my battery died. Thanks.
Needed this today! Great video even three years later!
Thanks Trailblazer, just helped me out of a jam! Starter trick did it on my '09 F350 Diesel. Thumbs up!!
Awesome!! 🍻
I have these in both my truck, and my wife’s Jeep, great idea, thanks
Yup glad this was a helpful video and not a disappointment
That's pretty cool. What do you do if the keys are locked inside with dead battery?
Get a brick 🧱
NICE SOLUTION!!! I have a hide a key but this is very good to know.
Well in this case the door lock cylinder was damaged which is why the door didn’t open with the hard key
I've got the gb150 love it I got the quick charger and case for it as well very nice kit

Excellent video. Great explanation great camera shots and no crappy music. 👏👏👏
Thanks 😊
Thanks for the information on how to unlock your vehicle. Thanks for sharing.☺️☺️☺️👍👍👍👍
No problem 😉
I've had to get into a couple of locked cars with dead batteries. I found that if you turn the key and hold it, then pull the door handle at the same time , the doors opened. I don't know if that would work on every vehicle, but it's worth a try.
Thanks for the advice I’ll try it.
New sub. Loved the hack. Made me convinced to buy Ford truck because of the starter location 🤪
Nice! 😁
If you have a long thin screwdriver wrap tape round the shaft leaving ends exposed, clip red jump lead on handle end and black to any bit of metal, you can reach awkward starters, works a treat .
Awesome thanks for the tip
I tried this on my 2010 f150 and it worked 🙌
What good is the jumper going to do if it’s in your glove box and you can’t get in the car?
Dude i appreciate that tip i knew i had to buy a new battery but didn't think i would get locked out like i did and this saved my window and a bigger hole in my bank account 😅
Great idea. Don't think it'll work the same on my

Great information! I will pass on this information to my mechanic friend.
Given the situation having it in (not on, hahaha... Sorry) your car would be moot. Sooo.. putting it outside the vehicle in the Bed locker would be a novel idea. Great information. Thanks!

A lot of good keeping a jumper in the glove box with the doors locked?
