"Your Honour, the courtroom is a crucible. In it we burn away irrelevancies until we are left with a pure product, the truth for all time. Now, sooner or later, this man or others like him will succeed in replicating Commander Data. And the decision you reach here today will determine how we will regard this creation of our genius. It will reveal the kind of a people we are, what he is destined to be. It will reach far beyond this courtroom and this one android. It could significantly redefine the boundaries of personal liberty and freedom, expanding them for some, savagely curtailing them for others."

One of the episodes that gained me a lot of respect for Picard was Lower Decks, because of the way he requested Ensign Sito specifically to give her a chance to rise above a mistake rather than letting it define her career. Compassion and professionalism all at once.

My father was an army officer (Dad's still around, but he's retired from that and his second career as a professor). I wanted to watch TNG one afternoon, and we saw the episode that introduced the Cardassians. At the end, Dad stated that Picard was a rare fictional officer that he would willingly serve under. You can't imagine how rare that type of compliment is.

Picard is the main reason I was so surprised at the number of nasty people I encountered as an adult. Did they not watch Star Trek? Do they not know that what they’re doing is wrong, unjust, corrupt, dishonest, unreasonable? Why can’t they admit their mistakes? Why aren’t they banding together for the greater good? Why can’t we get along, despite our differences? Why are they so greedy and self-centred? WHY DIDN'T YOU WARN ME JEAN-LUC? Except that he did. As a child, he taught me these lessons and the lesson of consistency better than anyone else ever has. And while I've not always had the nous to navigate the less than stellar kinds of people, my good intentions have always been built on a Picard-brand foundation. He embodies not only what humanity needs right now, but what humanity needs to become.

Picard is quite simply one of the finest characters ever created for a TV show. The writers laid the foundation, but you can tell they quickly started to shape the character around Stewart himself. He's a very thoughtful, intelligent and loving man, who is the perfect example of what you get from an actor who was immersed in Shakespeare for years. They bring acting on a different level to everything around them, and Stewart added a streak of quality that made TNG something special.

This may end up being a bit of a word wall, so sorry about that in advance, but Picard will always be a very special character to me, so I wanted to get this out there.
You need to know two things about me before you can understand why Measure of a Man is my favorite episode of TNG. The first is that my father is, and kinda always has been, very much like Picard. Thoughtful, charming, and a natural leader, but private, sometimes to the point of seeming cold. My father watched TNG with my mom when it first aired, and I honestly believe he so identified with the character of Jean-Luc Picard that he started displaying some of the same mannerisms as those displayed by Sir Patrick Stewart. I can't know for certain as I was born around the same time as TNG airing, and I never watched it live with him, but to this day, I can watch most episodes of TNG and find some little thing, a hand gesture, a facial expression, a passing phrase, that my father did countless times.
The second thing is that I have autism. I think you might see where I'm going with this.
Data has always been the character on TNG I've most identified with. Very literal, highly intelligent, kind of awkward, and oblivious to many social nuances and customs. He has to be taught so many parts of humanity, the same way I've had to. Eye contact, social conventions, topic appropriateness, all foreign to me until someone sat me down and told me about them in raw, literal detail.
So when Picard begins his monologue defending Data's right to be different, his right to be a sentient being, his right to choose, it hits home for me. It feels like my own father is defending my right to be who I have always been. That though I may be different, that just means I have something new to offer the world.
Picard is incredibly relevant to our modern times, because we as a society have always had trouble with the fact that our differences do not need fixing, our attitudes do. That what makes us different, makes us unique, and what makes us unique, makes us stronger, not weaker. Picard has defended individuality, applauded diversity, and celebrated uniqueness countless times. Not only that, but he is keenly aware of each of his crewmember's uniqueness and uses that knowledge to the Enterprise's advantage.
Now more than ever, we need someone who not afraid to stand up for the little guy, and see him or her as just as worthy of love, respect, and purpose as anyone else. Thank you for reading.

The "episodes" that have always defined, to me, how Picard knew he was not a superman, still had human vulnerabilities, were the 2 part "Chain of Command" and the movie First Contact. At the end of "Chain of Command" , Picard is physically and mentally broken to the point that he actually sees five lights (there were only four, but Cardassia interrogator insisted there were five) but through his will to not be broken he still defiantly said he saw four lights (though Picard himself hinted he was almost ready to give up and many viewers have stated that his final defiance was due to him knowing it was over and that he was going home). In First Contact, it is pointed out after Picard destroys his office that he is fighting the Borg out of revenge, not out of preservation. You can immediately tell the second that it dawns on Picard that the person is correct in the assessment and goes back to being the captain trying to save lives.
These two instances show that Picard is still human but he raises himself to be better even when he himself is unable to see the flaw and is always working to improve even himself.

    • @michaellangwaller

Someone just reminded me of the TNG episode "Family" where Picard goes on a forced vacation back to his brother's home and where he not only gets into a fight but breaks down and cries about how he was responsible for all the deaths during his time with the Borg. Even Picard's brother remarks about how Picard is finally realizing that he is all too human but that he still a good person.
Later we find that his family is lost in a house fire, seeing Picard grieving yet still pulling on his willpower to keep going.

One of my favourite Picard moments is in Star Trek First Contact. When he gives his famous speech full of rage... _the line must be drawn _*_here,_* we can see that he's pretty much consumed by fear, rage and hatred of the Borg, and it's very convincingly portrayed. Lily's analogy to Captain Ahab is more impacting than what it seems to be at first. _If his chest had been a cannon, he would have shot his heart at it. - What? - Moby Dick - Actually, I never read it..._ you all know the scene. Picard, being the literate person that he is, sees the error in his ways and is able to learn from it, admits his mistake and then chooses the reasonable course of action. He can admit that he makes mistakes, too. That's something not to be seen often in people, regrettably.

"The Measure of a Man" has always been my favorite episode of TNG, and it is largely because of Captain Picard's moments with Guinan and the speech in court that follow them. He admits he almost believed Riker's attempt to dehumanize Data, yet never loses his conviction that Data is not property; he simply doesn't know how to proceed. That he admits near-defeat but presses on anyway and ends up verbally kicking Maddox's ass always made me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

I can do without heaven, but I will happily do with Picard. He's the good man we all (or at least SOME of us) wish we could be, just a great example to look up to. I've tried to research online but can't find any supporting information. I distinctly remember when ST:TNG was in the latter half of their tv run, I heard a story on TV at the time saying scenes featuring Jean-Luc Picard were actually required viewing for airline captains at one particular airline as a template for the kind of temperament and attitude they should have in the work conditions they make for their airline crews. Patrick Stewart inspires people in ways I bet he will never fully be able to comprehend.

More than just being a diligent, compassionate and scholarly man, Picard is a great LEADER.
He's a 'steady hand at the wheel' when everything is crashing down around the Enterprise crew AND he's a man that the other members of the crew can look to for moral guidance. He's not just someone who can 'get things done' like Captain Jellico, but he's someone other people look to for advice when they face difficult ethical questions or no-win scenarios where the correct choice is difficult or impossible to determine.
He was certainly a better ship's councilor than Troy....

Darmok is one of my very faves. Once Picard understands Dathon and his perspective, he understands the sacrifice Dathon made and why he made it- a person so desperate for the mere experience of communication and understanding, that he was willing to sacrifice his life to do so. The Children Of Tama must have been a lonely race of sorts with so few others to understand them. When Picard was almost beamed away from the planet, he cried out in desperation and agony because of what that would mean to his new friend . And he was the only one who knew. There is no saying here that stands out for me, just Picard's humanity toward the other captain.

I have a life-sized cardboard cutout of Jean-Luc Picard (lovingly nicknamed "Captain Picardboard") in my living room. My aunt gave it to me around twenty-five years ago and although it has faded and I considered throwing it out a number of times, Captain Picardboard been my silent co-pilot through thick and thin. The best thing about him is he elicits a startle response from those not familiar with him. I'm considering using that as a security feature in my home. XD
Unfortunately, when I watch TNG these days, I usually begin with a mantra: "Lie to me, sweet _Star Trek_ ." Sadly, I don't think we're gonna make it, Jean-Luc. Thank you so much for trying. But if Sisko returns, he will have to be visibly older. Maybe not as much older as Avery Brooks is IRL, but I doubt he will look 20 years younger than IRL. The writers will have to answer that somehow. (Or not!)

My favorite Picard moment is when he and his brother have just stopped fighting in the family vineyard in France. They laugh at the stupidity of the situation, but then Picard breaks down about his memories of his time as Locutus of Borg. It's such a human moment.
Not to mention that it really showcases what a acting powerhouse Patrick Stewart is.
I also really love the moment when he is released from the Cardassian prison, and he turns around and defies his captor one last time.... but I ALSO love when he is talking to Troi after and admits that not only was he almost willing to lie, but he was so utterly destroyed, he actually thought he saw five lights. Again, I love the human moments.

While he is a fantastic actor with vast experience and great roles beyond Star Trek, if he is only remembered as Jean-Luc Picard, I can't help but feel that he'd be okay with that *because* of the profound and positive influence the character of Picard has had on the world by providing such an admirable role model. What made Jean Luc the best, imo, was that he was the first true captain. Kirk was an action hero, but Picard was how a ship's captain was meant to be. Courageous and decisive and all of those things sure, but measured with intelligence, compassion and surrounding himself with the finest crew possible to know he could trust and delegate towards there strengths. TNG always my favourite, and it is entirely because of the characterisation of Picard. Nice video. So keen for more Picard ^.^
