  • With the announcement of Patrick Stewart's return to his role as Jean-Luc Picard, I argue that our current political climate makes us hungrier than ever for what Picard represents: moral certainty. (Part 6)

The best captain by far! We are too far from that kind of equitable just society, but what an inspiration!

What a wonderful, wide-reaching video essay.
JLP also means to me curiosity (archeology), diplomacy and justice.

Now more than ever we need someone like Jean Luc to lead us. it seems we have people that posess the qualities of Captain Picard but we just can't get them to agree and work together for the common good of all. I would love to see a time when political affiliations doesn't divide us.

I take some management advice from Picard. The cadence and how he is measured under control of his feelings.

His admonishment of Cadet Wesley Crusher was one of his greatest speeches. Worf was all so distraught over his “dishonor” in Klingon society, but it was really Wesley who was dishonored, because he actually did something wrong. Worf didn’t.

Picard. I'm not great at expressing, but I write, so:
Robert Picard and his wife Maris stand at the edge of the family Vineyard. Their son Rene now as tall as Jean Luc's shoulder gives him a kiss goodbye on each cheek. Jean Luc beams, but he finds no words. Thankfully, Robert as usual speaks for him.
"He thinks highly of you. Jean. Blast if I know why... Oh before you leave, I have a gift for you." Robert passes a book to Rene, who eagerly passes it to his uncle.
"You probably don't still use paper up there. I suppose, your library consists of a Datapad, but I thought this might be to your liking. I thought it suits you perfectly little brother"
Jean Luc turned the leather-bound tome over and read the cover.
"Don Quixote?" He pursed his lips. Maris rolled her eyes expecting the fallout.
The Picard brothers both slowly burst out laughing and embrace each other. Patting Robert on the back,
"I'll study it Robert. Always and think of you"
    "as Sancho?"
    "No as an ass."
They fall into a fit of laughter, then a sombre silence falls.
    "Robert, Maris... I"
    Robert, raises a palm.
    "I know brother. Go safely"

Having a close relationship to my own Brother, any sibling story hit's me in the heart. Especially as the older. IT, Georgie hits me. Our own father raised us on his own and he died prematurely. So we have this back and forth jokey rivalry. But we love each other even though we goad one another.

Great essay. I thought Time Squared was a good Picard episode, even though it drags and seems to vacillate about what is at stake, besides saving the ship. It is also a premonition of Q at work in the background. Picard has to confront the type of commander he is and step back and objectify his instincts to make a gamble about where he is about to go wrong, before knowing what that wrong thing is. I actually forget the particulars, just the moment of decision. We know that Kirk can't accept defeat. This isn't that. Its more about confronting and interrogating his own personality.

Lost me when you got into politics

I get that totally. When Patrick Stewart identified our political time as the genesis for his return to Trek, I had to include such a reason in this look at why Picard is such an enduring character. I hope I presented the politics fairly! Thanks for watching!

I also love Picard. Like you I believe in the Bible. But I struggle with Star Trek not allowing God in Discovery, and that Star Trek seems to promote views that go against Christianity. They even promoted communism on their official website a couple months ago. Just wish in respecting everyone they would respect conservatives too.

Star Trek Discovery (or STD) is subversive, immature and vulgar. It dishonors Roddenberry's vision. They won't mention God, because in the minds of these narcissistic writers, they are god.

Conservatives quoted Picard’s “Censure” speech from “The Drumhead” in reference to modern Leftist Cancel Culture.

      Kirk was the warrior.
Picard was the diplomat and statesman.

Yeah Kirk would lead you into battle but Picard would negotiate so the battle wouldn’t be needed
