  • Dropping The Oil Pan On My Farmall H!
    My 1947 Farmall H tractor's oil pressure fades when it gets to operating temperature. Lets clean some sludge, drop the oil pan, and try some different engine oil to see if we can fix it!

    If the engine has been overhauled...Rotella 15/40

      I'm imagining this one has been overhauled at some point. Hopefully the 15w40 helps out with the oil pressure! Thanks 🙂

    Good day from Ontario. Boy interesting video, lots of sludge. How do we know if u have that in it? Thanks interesting.

    We use Delo 15w/40 in everything, except Becky's car.

    I was really expecting you to forget to put the suction screen back in before you installed the oil pan. We been using 15-40 in every gas tractor on the farm for the past 50 years. Never had any oil related problems.

    Are you going to to change to a 12 v alternator instead of a generator. If changing from 6 v, change to a 12 v coil and put in a volt guage

    If that doesn’t work you could always roll in new crank bearings I’m sure it’s pretty easy and cheap in that tractor.

    Fun video to watch Chris! That sludge at the bottom of the pan is a fine example of what short run time and condensation can do. Any engine needs to get up to temp and stay there for a while. Even better if it is working hard. As far as the oil pressure that's fairly common on a engine with some hours on it. It's just that all the clearances in the bearings and oil pump are slightly bigger then desired. Have no fear though the rule of thumb is you want 10 psi for every 1,000 rpm a engine is turning. If I remember correctly a H is 1650 to 1800 rpm so as long as you have 15 to 20 psi when hot and full throttle you'll be ok. Just a heads up I would not recommend any kind of cleaner or engine flush. If it does in fact work it could cause more harm then good. For example that sludge in the pan could get loosen up and start circulating. It would be better just to leave it where it was at. Anyway enjoy the H. Once it gets nice out go for some nice runs or work it. You'll love it.

      Now you have me thinking... The temperature on the tractor never really warms up- even raking hay on hot summer days. I replaced the temp guage, but it didn't make any difference. I wonder if I have a thermostat issue. Thanks for the oil pressure guidelines, it will give me something to watch for. I really appreciate your input and support 🙂

    • @Jason1Pa
      @Jason1Pa Рік тому +1

      @DeHaven Family Farm That is really odd that it isn't up to temp raking hay. Even if the thermostat is stuck open or not even there at all it should eventually get up to temp. Sadly I don't have a lot of faith in the gauges they produce for these. Either try another gauge. Maybe a automotive one for testing purposes. Or grab one of them cheap Lazer temperature readers. They are pretty accurate. Just scan the head and the top of the radiator it should give you a fairly accurate digital reading.

      @@Jason1Pa I do have a temp gun, so I will try that to check. Thank you for the advice!

    Hey Chris, I enjoyed watching you work on the old tractor. I remember when Permatex was used every time you changed a gasket. now they don't really require it any more.

    Trick for lining up your gasket is just set the bolts in the holes after you've set your gasket..... Oil gets people feathers all ruffled up....I run 15-40 diesel engine oil in all my tractors, gas or diesel engines..Old rule of thumb was for every 1000 RPM you need #10 of oil pressure....Thanks Chris....

    Good work Chris! For what it's worth I go 18 ft lbs on 5/16 pan bolts. 15w40 is in all my tractors. If your oil pressure issue persists you could try 50 weight racing oil.

    Man yeah Mr Chris, going after that oil pressure probelm 😁 Nothing wrong with 15/40 in gas engines in my opinion! Pretty slick about that pick up tube. I have tack welded a many of them in SBC's over the years!! I'm sure the bearings have wear, but I wonder if the spring and internals in the pump could be weak as well. Might could throw a pump in it if the probelm still persists. Ahhh, the oil pan torque🤦 So how about when I was putting dad's back in the 3000, I looked in the book for specs. It listed them, at first seemed a bit high, but what the book said . I began to torque them, and quickly realized the book had to be wrong, it was mashing tjr gasket out. Went to the book again, and found out I was looking at the specs for the cast iron oil pan not the stamped steel one 😳 Well let's just say the rest got hand tightened 😁 I love that High Tack from permatex, all I ever used on boats too. Man it's gotten expensive for that little jar though🤦 Look fwd to seeing how the new oil and cleaning helps out, thank you for bringing us along!! 😁😁🇺🇸🇺🇸👍

      Glad to hear you have had good luck with 15w40. I had thought about the oil pump, but your suggestion may have me revisiting that possibility if the oil pressure gets worse. To be a fly on the wall when you realized your mistake on the torque spec 🤣🤣🤣 Thank you Nelson!!
