Fought the same fight with my Ford 335 Industrial that has the same engine as a 3600 series. 175 CI 3 cyl diesel. When I put in the called 6 qts the dip stick indicated it was over filled. So,when I dropped the pan to do an in-frame I did find some sludge. Cleaned that out and when I got done with the rebuild I added the 6 qts and dip stick still showed slight overfill but when the engine is running it is at the high mark.My thought is as long as the crank isn't in the oil and churning/foaming it up a little high but at the called quantity it's good. Here's a suggestion: with the pan off put 7 quarts in it and measure the distance from the oil to the top of the pan. If you like the distance stay with 7 quarts. Then re-mark your dip stick at that level as full.It would be nice if old equipment came with a full set of original manuals and all the parts (dip stick come to mind) were original but that is a rarity lol. Front seal can be a sucky job. Good winter project.
I probably should have just drained and filled this one. It would have been ok. But with the history of stuff I found not quite right with the overhaul and just stuff that shouldn't be in general with this thing. I had to drop the pan. I'm glad it wasn't full of crap. Maybe things are looking up for this tractor after all.
