As a “retired”living historian, I wore a Sontag in the fall and winter events and it is amazing how warm you will stay. I am going to make myself one for modern wear now.
I had wore a Sontag a week ago during our Dickens Wintermarket.. Outdoors it was so nice to wear it. Inside i had to take it off. So im sure im gonna make one for myself
I am not a living historian, but i am making myself one right now! i have some sunset colorway cotton from an older projext i no longer love and i think this will be perfect for it. and in cotton means i wont die in my 90 degree fall and spring temps!😅
Adore this Civil War Era handcraft. This looks vintage as presented and with your modern update you have made this 68 year old maker very happy! I always appreciate the 'raw'' crochet demonstrations even though I know you don't like to show the 'goofs', I need to see that frogging is NOT a bad thing; you don't like something-just start over! Thank you very much for sharing, Corrina, and a blessing on your head for all you do for our community.
Tricot in French knitting. faire du tricot, to knit ... I'm Romanian and for me "a tricota" means to knit ... Tricot can refer to a type of fabric that is used for tshirts undies etc because is sort of an inelastic knit ... So this simple Tunisian crochet is probably called a tricot because looks more like knit stitching on the wrong side and curly like you said (at 50:44) and knitting tends to curl 😊but is also inelastic a durable in the same time. Hope my two cent input is helpful 🙂
*unsolicited opinion* the mor i look at the picture the more im convinced that a. the artist wasn't totally sure how to draw what was made 😅 and b. the border, if truely meant to be done with single crochets instead of tunisian simple, must have been intended to be done in long rows (sideways) instead of short rows. Also, c. if intended to be single crochet, they must have meant to have separate instruction for the inner border vs the outer border because i see the vandyke in the inner portion, but not the outer.... I'm just trying desperately to make it make sense because this is beautiful and i wish i could recreate it 😂 Bless you for always making it all come together!
I like the way you make nice neat edges. Thanks for the detailed instruction. The antique sontags you show at the beginning are very appealing to the modern eye. The idea of a warm garment that doesn't interfere with movement and daily work is timeless.
During my reenactment days a sontag was worn by many, many women. They are wonderfully warm and safe to wear around the fire. Thank you. Great teaching, we should all have one in our closet to wear today!
I fell in love with the style shawl, but I am not a crocheter, so I found a knit pattern for a Swedish or danish fisher woman’s shawl, and I’ve been wearing it for a couple years now. It’s the same idea as yours, wraps around your waist and I made mine tie in the front, but I used plain garter st. Not as fancy as yours however it still keeps me warm around the house in Maine winters. 😄
Sontag is a new term for me, but I love the garment. I do not crochet but surely it could be made of fabric. It has the functionality of a vest but is so much more feminine than many other vest styles. Sometimes I need added warmth around my upper body but prefer to keep my arms unencumbered. The shawl effect about the shoulders and snug waist will give visual balance to a long full skirt.
I believe Bernadette Banner and Costuming Drama have each made what you're thinking of. I want to say it's an Edwardian capulet, but I don't think that's the correct title? O my! I've been procrastinating on learning tunisian for yrs now. THIS is the project that caught my eye LOL. I'm doing this left handed. Had to start over a bunch of times because I kept messing up the increase. Finally made it to 33 rows tonight. I'm using Red Heart camo colorway yarn (not the best to see stitches -another added complexity) - seems a great choice to be "battle ready" this year😂 Thank you for resurrecting these historical pieces. I love your videos and your sense of humor. I have been crocheting since 1967 and my first project after a couple scarves, was the Granny Square vest. I got compliments and was asked where I got it. I wish I had saved it. I wore it till 1973. Now, I am older ,74, tobe exact, and have crocheted and knitted clothes and blankets for three grandchildren. The youngest is18, and she is trying to learn how to crochet. I am now on dialysis in Parker,AZ. So I am working along with you to make this Sontag. It is freezing on dialysis and i can only wear one sleeve . I think this would be perfect to wear to dialysis. Nice and warm with more coverage ! I remember seeing these on women in the old movies about the civil war and people on wagon trains in old tv shows. . One of your lace edging was same pattern my grandmother gave me. the 1860 pattern that you have a picture of at 0:07 (on the right) is a knit pattern. I modified it and crocheted it for my daughter who loves vintage anything. I even gave it a weave/waffle look by alternating blocks of front post and back loop work. She wears it a lot during winter.
That's called basket weave. I made one, too. A yarn eater! The pattern is from Go dey's Ladies Magazine, and The Ragged Soldier has both crochet and knit versions for folks to make.
I made a Sontag for a costume, I liked it so much, I made 2 more to wear around the house in winter. I used a different historical pattern and knitted it. I just got some lovely yarn as a gift. I would love to make this, I just need a Tunisian crochet hook.
I've always been told that the hook sizes for a tunisian crochet project should be a size or two bigger than they call for. It's always worked for me to get the correct size and gauge to increase it. Have a very merry Christmas.
@@serenity6415 Tunisian seems to be a tighter stitch as you work it. That smaller hook will cause the fabric to curl on you as you work. I would suggest just trying it with small swatches with different size hooks to see it and decide what you like best. Borders and cuffs make the curl no big deal for me.
@ serenity6415 Some people go up as much as two hook sizes with Tunisian Crochet, both to help prevent curl, and to give it a nicer drape. Tunisian typically makes for a stiffer cloth than regular crochet, when using the yarn recommended hook size.

@@lauriekurad thank you. Very quiet here but tomorrow is going to be another story. Our family will be gathering at my brother and sister-in-law's house. All their kids and grandkids from 3 months old to 23 will be there. We don't have any children so I just love on them all! My mother brother and one of this 2 kids will be there as well. They are coming from Taos, New Mexico. We live in the Texas panhandle. I hope the beauty and the really joy of the season warm your and let you know that even if it's quiet, you are not alone and God's love surrounds you! It's been a stranger year than usual. It's hard to find the joy I usually have. It's just different this year but the joy is there. It's in the quiet times that I find the peace. Love in Christ
I have so much going on at the moment, but this will be great for my mom who has a hard time getting a sweater on by herself...(she is always cold) I will be adding the belt to it as in the picture, so she can tie it on. Love this one!!!
I now want to do one of these, I already have multiple projects going! 😆 One possible explanation for the trim confusion migth be that the picture is not actually *of* the sontag as made in the description, just a picture that they had on hand that was similiar enough for their purpose. I have encountered that in more recent crafting books too, often with a throw away mention or a footnote that says 'oh, by the way the picture only gives the general idea for A, B and C pattern variations, not a true to life representation of any of them'. Because that border as described in the books looks to me like it would be a double scallop trim, meant to be sewn on on top of the edge not truly *to* the edge of the work. Could be printer error too I guess, is there a picture/pattern of a sontag with a scallop edge in that book? When I do tunisian crochet I start the chain row using a crochet hook a size larger than the one I am going to use on the rest of the work. For me it helps in decreasing the curling more evenly than just working the stitches loose, most benefit reaped on long starting chains where my hands tend to revert back to normal tension. Picked it up on a crochet forum somewhere.
Thank you for this clear explanation of your tutorial. Right color background & the color choice for the project . Easy to see the stitches. No repeat music to drive me crazy. Thank you for the history information too. May I say you have beautiful hands🥰 I was surprised to know this was made in Tunisian crochet. I thought this is rather a new way of crochet .🤔 Wishing you a very Happy New Years 2024. ❤🙏🏼💕
Thrilled to discover your vids. I am baginning to use older English patterns. You sound soo much like me as you figure out whaaat they really mean. I am enjoying and molting with this lovely challange. PTL for modern terms and process and videos, tutorials and community.
I’ve also been attempting to make it but it seems like a 5mm hook is way too small for it to even fit a small. Are you having any luck working out the proper gauge?
I have an old book that has a Sontag knit pattern. I don’t knit, but I am convinced it should be made with crochet as it contains a checkered pattern. Never done anything like it and I am really nervous, but it’s so beautiful! This has inspired me to try again. Thank you and Merry Christmas!🎄🎁

I am just working on a version for my niece and I think I will make one for myself. Lets make a trend. This is the new "Harry Styles Jacket" 😁 love it! Thank you.
Never heard of asontag. So this is something I need to research.obviously from the comments I'm the only one.aalso need to practice Tunisian sine I never did more than the beginning do you have this on the Yt if it disappears from my phone
Loving this tutoriel. Only learnt to tunisien crochet last summer so its my biggest project to date. I used a 7mm for the main body and 8mm for the body which i attached directly much easier. Now making a second one for work . So thank you for making this video. 😊
So, Corinne, I have been thinking about this pattern since you first put it out. I finally took the plunge. I ordered the pattern from Etsy to get the amount of yarn needed. Then I ordered the yarn, 100% wool in a beautiful scarlet color with a dark grey. I have 8-12 days before the yarn arrives so I'm going to practice my skills at tricot stitch. 😊 I'm very excited.
I love Tunisian crochet! Last year year I made my family Christmas stockings using the Tunisian knit stitch and they turned out gorgeous!! This pattern is beautiful!
Hi, I made a baby blanket using Tunisian hook and really enjoyed it. When I started crocheting again, it was 40+ years since I'd done any crocheting . I've really enjoyed everything I've done. I love watching all your videos. Mistakes and all. Your videos are very informative. Thank you for sharing.
That is so beautiful! Your work is amazing, Corinne. I gave Tunisian a try when I was young, back in the dark ages. Now that we have electricity and lights I may give that another look. My mind no longer swirls with its youthful thoughts and I'm happier learning new things! Also, i can't find my pot! - Coughs. - 💕💕💕
love love LOVE this pattern!! i’ve never tried tapestry crochet but i’ve been wanting to learn, and your instruction and guidance on this tutorial is phenomenal. thank you for taking care and shedding light on these historical patterns for us 🤍
How exciting!!!! I just got my sewella hooks n now you have presented the perfect pattern for my first ❣❣❣❣ Edit: oh duh, project. I was so excited i forgot to put in the word. 😂
I might have actually been hypnotized into making a sontag. It's mid summer in Australia, but I fell asleep listening to this, found some bulky weight where the dye lots were too different for my original plan for it, and now the arms are at my waist.
Lol would that work for boring housework I wonder? Before you know it, the house is clean and you can get back to crochet. It's just beginning to be blistering hot in Southern Canada. What better time to make myself some winter gear. I can't NOT make now that I've seen it. I'm on my way to Michaels to get yet more yarn.😢
Oh definitely a good plan to ride the inspiration. It's just so hard when the work is too hot to hold on your lap. The funny looks from folks in air conditioned cafes while I worked on it were also hilarious. @@serenity6415
I have been looking for a Sontag pattern for a long time and now I have one! Thanks! I have several old patterns from the 70s-80s that were my mom's. I cherish them. My problem in making some of them is the yarn they call for is now longer being made and finding a suitable substitute is really hard.
You must be reading my mail! I have been looking at both knit and crochet patterns for a Sontag! It's beautiful, I love it! I'm definitely going to make this...after I finish Christmas gifts. I know it's Christmas Eve. Don't judge.
I love your channel. You push me to get out of the mediocre stage I seem to be in lately. I have never tried Tunisian crochet. Now you have motivated me. Thank you so much ❤.
Nice work, as usual! Beautiful product and you did some nice modification to the pattern to make it work. These wordy patterns that don't tell the full story make me a bit crazy and the picture looks to, maybe and probably be a drawing or artist's rendering. Frustrating to say the least. I'm gonna make one in then new year and I'm gonna wear it!!! I think it will loom great under a coat or without it, too! Thanks Corinna! Merry Christmas!!!🎄✨
I'm catching Dickens fair vibes. Only 10 months to go. I could probably make it by then. and it's worsted weight!! so many of these patterns call for like thread. I don't have the time or eyesight for thread. but I do love watching you create with it.
I love this , have seen them in movies but never knew what they were called or how made , gotta make for a friend 's birthday in February she will love this her shoulders always hurt from cold weather this is perfect for her , Thank You for another great video !! ❤ It
It's very very beautiful and I'm going to get some hooks like that so I can make me and my mother in law one and my niece and my sis in law one too and you did a really really lovely job. Just love all your videos
I'm having an issue. I have frogged this piece 3 times now. What is the measurement from the neck opening down to the point in the back, the measurement across at the widest point (probably across the shoulders and the measurement from the neck down the front. I must crochet super tight cuz I'm at the neck opening using a worsted weight yarn, a 5.5mm hook and mine only measures 11 inches from the neck to the point in the back and 19 across the shoulders. Please help I'm utterly useless. I even bought the pattern off of your Etsy and can't figure it out
Wonderful inspiring generous share - THANK YOU ❤. Would you please share the finished measurements before the border- I need to increase the size to accommodate 52” bust - roughly 2XL size or perhaps your gauge if no measurements available??? Again much appreciation and admiration of your humor and tenacity. Much goodness to you in the coming new year 🎉

Wonderful!
There is a Sontag with a belt. The others have the front parts button in the back, and the ties on the back wrap to the front to secure it.
I never thought I was up for Tunisian crochet but after watching you, I think I’d like to try it =D
Working on making a Sontag now! It’s my first time doing a Tunisian crochet pattern, but your video is great at explaining how to do it. Great video
I love your way of increasing. Much better!!
Thank you for this clear explanation of your tutorial. Right color background & the color choice for the project . Easy to see the stitches. No repeat music to drive me crazy. Thank you for the history information too. May I say you have beautiful hands🥰
I was surprised to know this was made in Tunisian crochet. I thought this is rather a new way of crochet .🤔 Wishing you a very Happy New Years 2024. ❤🙏🏼💕
It's a beautiful piece of work 😊xx
Stunning ❤
Thrilled to discover your vids. I am baginning to use older English patterns. You sound soo much like me as you figure out whaaat they really mean. I am enjoying and molting with this lovely challange. PTL for modern terms and process and videos, tutorials and community.
My New Year Resolution is to make this 🥳 I can’t wait to get started on it!
I would love to have that pattern! I love checkered patterns!
I created a basket weave pattern Sontag, they look great! I have several crochet Sontag patterns for anyone.
@@JenniferBristol I would love a dainty crochet Sontag pattern in crochet. Thank you!
@@deborahstatler7385 Look on the book of faces for me. I have the vintage looking pic, and drop me a line there. I have tried several times here, but can't leave a mail trail.
I absolutely love tunisian crochet and antique & vintage patterns. I’ve also wanted to make a sontag shawl for a long time. You have a way of uploading patterns I would immediately be interested in, and this is no exception. Thank you and Happy Holidays!! 💜💜
Nice nails too, this is a great project, thank you 4 explaining to us!
I love it! You do such a wonderful job explaining and editing the stitches to bring current! ! Thank you! ❤
Thank you so much!
I've been making tons of swatches learning different tunisian stitches! It's so fun and the return pass is so satisfying for some reason 😂
I love Tunisian crochet! Last year year I made my family Christmas stockings using the Tunisian knit stitch and they turned out gorgeous!! This pattern is beautiful!
This is lovely! I like how the edges of Tunisian crochet are nice and regular. You can see where to put border stitches.
Wow I think you are the teacher I've ever watched I love your stuff and I really enjoy following along thank you😊
That is so beautiful! Your work is amazing, Corinne. I gave Tunisian a try when I was young, back in the dark ages. Now that we have electricity and lights I may give that another look. My mind no longer swirls with its youthful thoughts and I'm happier learning new things! Also, i can't find my pot! - Coughs. - 💕💕💕
Wonderful!
Hi, C! I love this pattern. Thank you! I think "tricot" is pronounced similar to "picot". Merry Christmas, dear friend! Hugs, always.
love love LOVE this pattern!! i’ve never tried tapestry crochet but i’ve been wanting to learn, and your instruction and guidance on this tutorial is phenomenal. thank you for taking care and shedding light on these historical patterns for us 🤍
Girl you're not simple. Don't talk about yourself that way... 🤗 🥰 Seriously though, self talk is so influential... Might as well make it positive ❤
How exciting!!!! I just got my sewella hooks n now you have presented the perfect pattern for my first ❣❣❣❣
Edit: oh duh, project. I was so excited i forgot to put in the word. 😂
The images showing original context are special. Thanks for those with the tutorial.
I love this pattern and I love your nails!!
I tried to knit this, and failed. So good to see this, makes me happy. I'll do my best to follow your instructions and make my "dream come true" 😉
@@serenity6415 high five for folks making winter wear in mid summer! We know how to plan!
@charliechristie9916 well I know if I don't ride the novelty train now and wait until fall, I'll procrastinate until spring.
Oh definitely a good plan to ride the inspiration. It's just so hard when the work is too hot to hold on your lap. The funny looks from folks in air conditioned cafes while I worked on it were also hilarious. @@serenity6415
Fantastic my next project once Christmas is over.🎉🎉
I have the original version of the knit pattern and a more recent adaption. So happy to see a crochet version even without watching.
You do a great job, clear instruction with choice of direction. Lovely work.
Thank you very much!
What a Christmas Surprise. Blessings to you and your family
Wonderful!
I have several Sontag patterns to share. Let me know if you want me send you them.
I've actually been looking for a sontag pattern! YAY! Thank you, Corinna. 💖
I have several different Sontag crochet patterns. You can contact me for a copy.
@@JenniferBristol Thank you! 💖
@@SewardWriter You're very welcome! Look on the book of faces for me.
@@SewardWriter look for the vintage looking pic, drop me a line there. I've tried several times here, but can't leave a mail trail.
Tunisian crochet is my fav! Also, glad you showed to ways to increase. I use a third and different option wich makes use of the Tunisian lock stitch.
God bliss you❤ I have to rewatch this I lost you some place lol I love the look though I’m going to finish it later
Keep up the amazing work you do
😊 thank you
I love your channel. You push me to get out of the mediocre stage I seem to be in lately. I have never tried Tunisian crochet. Now you have motivated me. Thank you so much ❤.
Wonderful!
This is a beautiful pattern. I'm slowly starting to make it! Also, your nails are lovely. Thank you for the video.
Tricot is a french noun that is derived from the verb tricoter which mean knitting.
Wonderful! I have this pattern and haven't made it. Dont know how to do Tunisian crochet. Merry Christmas, Corinna! 🎄💖✨
I learned how to Tunisian crochet last year. And now a wearable. What a fun project. I will need to adjust since a large woman. A challenge! 😊
I love this , have seen them in movies but never knew what they were called or how made , gotta make for a friend 's birthday in February she will love this her shoulders always hurt from cold weather this is perfect for her , Thank You for another great video !! ❤ It
Oh boy! I've been waiting for this!
I even bought the pattern off of your Etsy and can't figure it out
Yes,I agree the black is far nicer against the blood red,
I love how it looks!I would definitly wear one. Awesomw, thanks!
Gorgeous!! Thank you for these wonderful videos!!
Much goodness to you in the coming new year 🎉
Wowzers 🤩🤯 That is just beautiful! I don’t do Tunisian (yet) so I’m gonna do this with regular crochet. Thank you 🙏
I know nothing about Tunisian crochet but this was a fabulous intro and tutorial. You made it so simple and easy to follow. I'm thinking l might have to give this a go sometime. 😊
Thank you so much!
What an awesome pattern. It's beautiful.
Happy New Year 2024 👍. I am so glad to have "found" your channel in 2023! You have taught me a great hobby.
Hope you and your yours had a blessed, happy and healthy New Year!
Love the pattern . Now to send hubby for a Tunisian hook h 5 mm! He already thinks crochet is taking over the place!
Hello there Sweet Corrina...This just popped up on my Notifications, but it says 5 days ago. Funny because I watched along with you, and plan to get a Tunisian Hook that size and make it !
If you did not re-post it... Hmmm. Someone is telling me something...maybe my Grandmom, who taught me Crochet and visits me often, and has become quite proficient with Electronics. (Sorry, but I'm a Medium, but can't hear my owned one's speak...not all the time, anyway. Many big us can't, probably because we would want to talk with them all the time)
Sorry for the Babble. Either way, I hope you are enjoying the Holidays, and I am so happy your son enjoyed his Christmas Gift.
Happy New Year...Love you Lots
🎉🎉💜💜💜🎉🎉
5mm is quite a small hook for Tunisian crochet with worsted. Curl will be reduced if you use the recommended 5.5-6.5mm size hook (I-9 - K-10.5) 👍🏻
That will change the size of the garment, I would go with what the pattern recommends, and as you saw in the video I did not have an intense curl, just the normal curl that Tunisian always creates :) . Thanks
Hello Corrine 👋. Just wanted to say hi and to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and blessings for a joyous New Year 🎊🎉. I love your videos and seeing you so happy when you do a mystery pattern ❤️. Peace and blessings to all 💜
I am very happy to find this video. I am currently working on a skirt with the same stitch and this Sontag would go great with it! I had no Idea the skirt I am working on is historically accurate "sort of" LOL I am not following a pattern and I am using modern fibers. I told my friend I get the skirt and Sontag done all I need is a bonnet LOL. Thank you for this video!
This is so very beautiful! Well done!
Merry Christmas Eve!
Oh I love this Corinna! It looks beautiful, I love the colours too.
Your the Best hunni
