    Thanks for the info. It helped quite a bit. I purchased the Asus RT-AX300, which by the way is AMAZING, and I have used QoS many years ago when I worked at Yamaha Music Corp in their IT dept. I think the various models of routers will all have the same thing but maybe mapped out a little differently on each admin page. I love the fact that you can throttle people in your house or your business if they are forever eating all the bandwidth. I have two of those exact people that live here but hopefully will one day very, very soon move out on their own...lol. Again, thanks for the upload and thumbs up for sure!

    Something worth of a notice, manufacturers such as Asus states to NOT use QoS if your connection is beyond 250 Mbit.. It will simply tank your performance on each device, I'm on 1 Gbit and have tested all options, it simply doesn't allow one device to pull a full 1 Gbit, even when it's the only device on the network.. Going beyond 600 Mbit is impossible on Asus routers with QoS enabled, so don't waste your time.. QoS is meant to manage traffic on congested networks, not to make your Internet go faster..

      @@W0ND3RB0Y1 thank you for this insight! was about to return an AX router just to swap it out with a different AX-whatever so I can have adaptive QoS, (mine only came with Traditional) thinking it'll be better managed than me manually setting up something. • @W0ND3RB0Y1
      @W0ND3RB0Y1 Рік тому

      @@Pete-jp8cl yeah it really isn't worth it if you're setting up a home network with good speeds.. You're free to try a different brand and see if you have any luck getting one device to pull full speeds, but it might be a rabbit hole for sure.. I personally don't use it because I have 10Gbit LAN and all speeds are being affected on all devices the moment you turn on QoS on the network... It's quite horrible..

    I am grateful for this video. I bought a ASUS RT-AX82U, and I read the manual section on QoS but it left me completely confused. I googled for other material about QoS for my modem, but didn't find anything good. I even called ASUS to ask why there are priority settings on the "Bandwidth Monitor" page, and was told that these just set the priority of the monitoring, not the priority of the traffic!! Your video, however, did a beautiful job of making sense of everything, so that I can now set it up the way I want it.
    One thing I wondered about -- if I use the Adaptive QoS -> Customize method, where I just set the priority order for different types of traffic, how does the router know what type of traffic my devices are generating? Does it have some big catalog of device types and apps so that it can recognize traffic through some identification in packet headers? Or does it actually look at the packet rates and packet timing to make a categorization? Or some other method? Just curious...

      Thank you for your message and I am glad I was able to help. Without going into too much technical details, QoS analysis the packets to determine the priority of each packet. Hi, I am using Zenwifi xt9 in mesh mode. so far my network works well, occasionally the wifi drops, however the lights on the devices and the modem form the isp don't show any warning, i.e. (all green and white) when i visit the asus router webpage, their isn't any indication of connectivity issues unless i try to ping a website.. my question is, can i be sent be notified if the connection drops, and how would i diagnose the problem, or is there a way to alert me to what the problem may be, i feel like this should be possible.

    Great video but I have a couple of questions. Let's say I have 3 or 4 different LG TVs. How would I set it up on the traditional Qos to identify each of the TVs? Isn't it much better to set them up using the Mac addresss rather than the IP address because the router may change IP addresses from time to time since they are not static? If I did set them up using Mac addresses, how would each be identifiable? Thanks!

    Let's say I have an VoIP Phone (I know its MAC address) which only needs 0.5 Mbps total upload and download bandwidth and I want to make sure that it will always have priority over every other devices combined. What mode would I use? In other words, is there a way to force a limit on total bandwidth used be all devices except for that VoIP Phone device? For example, the router stops at 95% of Internet total bandwidth used by all devices combined (except VoIP phone), which garantees to keep the remaining 5% of Internet bandwidth for the VoiP phone.

    • @KnowledgeSharingTech
      @KnowledgeSharingTech  Рік тому

      You can set them on Adaptive QoS with priority to Work From Home, this will prioritize VOIP or you can put them in Bandwidth limiter and assign the bandwidth to all your devices while making sure that the sum of all the bandwidths does not exceed the total internet speed you have.
      I would recommend Adaptive QoS

      @@KnowledgeSharingTech Using Bandwidth Limiter with let's say 4 PCs, one VoiP device and 100 mbps Internet access, I would be forced to set a max of 24 mbps for each PC, limiting their speed to 24 mbps even when only one PC is being used. I guess that's where Adaptive QoS is much better by maximising your Internet bandwidth while preserving the priority to the VoIP device?

    Does QoS setting is the same on other Asus router models? or base model have limited QoS function?

  • @goblinphreak2132
    @goblinphreak2132 Рік тому

    QoS in my opinion has one function only, to sort packets in/out based on latency. If PC1 is gaming and PC2 is downloading, packets should get prioritized by PC1 as gaming is latency dependent. Downloading a file doesn't matter how fast the latency is because its DATA dependent.
    I had an older ASUS router, and with gigabit internet, 3 power users in home, it couldn't keep up. turned on QoS and it still couldn't keep up. I ended up running some bufferbloat tests. With QoS on that old ASUS router turned OFF, I scored an F in buffer bloat. MIND YOU, this was with me being the only person awake and using my computer. All other devices were either OFF or simply not doing anything that required networking. Then I flipped QoS on and the buffer bloat now scored a solid D rating.... not good either way. Buffer Bloat means when downloading/gaming at the same time, the router will NOT be able to prioritize your gaming packets, and you will end up with higher latency in game, thus lag and stutters. Not good for e-sports/fps gaming titles....
    Turn around and I had ordered the Ubiquiti Dream Machine Pro. This router/switch combo has been flawless for me. SADLY I cannot say the same thing about their WiFi products.... so once everyone was connected, once again its late night, I was the only one awake, I ran buffer bloat tests. With QoS disabled (Ubiquiti calls them "smart queues") I got a buffer bloat score of B. Not bad. But could still be better. Then I enabled QoS on the Ubiquiti and sure enough, A+ buffer bloat score, the absolute best score that website could even give to a user. NOW, PC1 can game with low ping 24/7 while PC2 and PC3 (my other 2 power users in the house) can download FULL SPEED. Literally 80-125 MB/s on both of them at the same time thanks to QoS.
    And ive heard all kinds of bullshit on the internet, "you have gigabit internet, you DONT NEED QoS because you have so much bandwidth" what? absolutely WRONG. when you are someone living along, no family, no friends, no roommates, sure, gigabit doesn't need QoS because you are the ONLY user, and you will probably prioritize downloading while NOT gaming and ignore QoS as a whole. When you have others living with you, you cannot tell them to stop downloading because you are gaming.... QoS is a godsent for multiple users....
    However, as I stated, my Dream Machine Pro while being flawless, their WiFi access points are dogshit. I mean the worst of the worst. I can't stand how often the WiFi crashes, the unit overheats, whatever. And mind you, the house is set to 75f AC summer and 75f heat in winter.... there is no reason why overheating should be a thing. My old Asus router couldn't even do wifi6 and yet it gave me faster speeds than my ubiquiti wifi access point in terms of wireless. That's kinda sad. There is no reason why a newer product, from a supposed networking focused business, to be slower than a company that literally has their finger dipped into every honeypot possible (monitors, motherboards, graphics cards, networking cards, wifi, headphones, mice, keyboard, etc).
    I am thinking about buying the Asus AX89-X which has 8 ports which we need at least 6 (another reason why I went dream machine pro) and then simply selling the ubiquiti to someone local at discount prices. I just hope the QoS is good enough on Asus NOW. Granted the old asus I had was 1.2ghz dual core with 1gb memory and thus couldn't handle 3 power users.... the Dream Machine Pro has a quad core 1.7ghz cpu and 4gb ram which is easily able to handle everything we've thrown at it wired wise. the asus has a 2.2ghz quad core but only 1gb ram.... so not sure if the ram will be a bottleneck but im assuming "no".... however that 2.2ghz quad core should process network traffic efficiently.

    I have an ASUS TUF-AX3000 V2 updated to the latest BIOS. My connection is a 1Gbit FTTH (1000Mb down, 300Mb up). I have a problem enabling the adaptive QoS, the download bandwidth is automatically halved to 500Mb even though there is no device connected to the router except my PC connected via ethernet cable. It's a strange behavior since if I connect wirelessly from the phone and run a speed test I get all the 1Gbit bandwidth. Obviously this problem doesn't occur if I disable QoS, my PC goes back to having 1Gbit. How come in your opinion?

      Traffic is filtered over the routers physical cores when QoS is enabled, so there's a limit to real-time bandwidth and data throughput to consider... If your connection isn't stable, QoS won't fix it either.. It's only intended to manage traffic on lower end networks....

    QOS is not needed when you have a Gigabit or multi gigabit connection. That's to say if you are running at 1000 mbps, most than likely you can leave the QOS alone and let the bandwidth breath on it's own. At night late in the wee wee hours I doubt you will be hogging bandwidth and all the bandwidth is for your gaming PC .
