    Learn how to set up your ASUS router (running ASUSWRT firmware) to connect to your favorite VPN service and keep your entire network secure.
    Step by step guide with pictures:
    www.vpnuniversity.com/tutoria...
    This tutorial takes you through the exact setup process for configuring an OpenVPN client on your router. It will work with any ASUS router running the ASUSWRT firmware. It will also work for any VPN provider that supports OpenVPN connections.
    We do the tutorial with 2 VPNs, one that has the CA certificate embedded in the .ovpn config file, the other has a separate config and certificate file.
    What you will need to complete this tutorial:
    1] A VPN-compatible ASUS-brand router:
    www.vpnuniversity.com/routers...
    2] An active VPN subscription. We recommend the following providers:
    Private Internet Access: vpnu.cc/pia
    NordVPN: vpnu.cc/nordvpn
    IPVanish: vpnu.cc/ipvanish
    You can also find reviews of all of these providers on our site, vpnuniversity.com
    PIA: www.vpnuniversity.com/review/...
    Nordvpn: www.vpnuniversity.com/review/...
    IPVanish: www.vpnuniversity.com/review/...

    When I looked into this for my own router a year ago, it seemed much more complicated. This tutorial makes it relatively easy. I hope I can get this done on my Netgear C3700 dual band wireless router. I have the PIA VPN and would MUCH rather have it on my Netgear Router rather than on all my devices, although having it on my cell has it's advantages in public places too.

      It depends on what you use the VPN for. For example, if you live in Europe but want to access U.S. based streaming services you might choose a U.S. server location. Usually though, you should just choose the location closest to you for the fastest speeds.

    Wonderful video. Clear and well spoken. Learnt a lot from it.
    One thing though; I would call it "How to setup client VPN (OpenVPN) for ASUSWRT routers" This as the server (!) setup is lacking. I waited impatiently to see a server/client setup in the video (with another ASUS on the other side acting as a server).... not there.
    But the general setup is clear how to act in such a case on the server side.

    I understand Netflix will not connect with most VPN's. So if I have a VPN on my router, is there a way to turn it off or go around it when accessing Netflix from my home ?

    • @Vpnuniversity
      @Vpnuniversity  6 років тому

      There are two ways to do this:
      1. Use a dual-router setup, where the VPN router runs through the primary (non-vpn) router. Simply switch wifi networks when you want to go outside the VPN.
      2. Use ASUSWRT-Merlin which is a 3rd-party mod of the ASUS firmware. It allows you to route certain clients or IP addresses outside the VPN tunnel. This works best if you watch Netflix on a dedicated device like a chromecast, firestick, appleTV etc. We don't have a video on this yet, but we do have written tutorials:
      1. VPN setup on asuswrt-merlin: www.vpnuniversity.com/routers/how-to-setup-openvpn-asuswrt-merlin

    AWESOME VIDEO!!! You have taken all the guesswork out of setting this up! Two quick questions...I personally use SaferVPN (I tried NordVPN but it would not stream Hulu properly to Thailand...video was slow, choppy and buffered). Will this particular router (Asus RT-AC66U 802.11ac Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router) work pretty much the same way your video described assuming I'm using SaferVPN? Any tips I should know in advance? Thanks SOOOOO MUCH!!!

    • @Vpnuniversity
      @Vpnuniversity  3 роки тому

      Hi, yes any ASUSWRT router with VPN support will use the same setup steps. However, the AC66U is a single-core CPU and maxes out around 11mbps in my testing with 256-bit encryption. That could be why you're buffering, not NordVPN. For streaming you really need a dual-core router like the AC-68U: amzn.to/3kUveqI

    Great explanation of everything in this video man. This is probably the best one I've seen so far. The only thing that gets me is that none of these videos perform a speed-test. I have an Asus RT-AC87r router that's running the latest Asus firmware. After setting up openVPN in the Asus router's VPN client with NordVPN, my internet download speeds dropped from over 100Mbps all the way down to 16Mbps. That's not acceptable at all for my home network setup. Was able to achieve about 60Mbps using L2TP on my router, but using that protocol pretty much defeats the purpose of using a VPN. Any suggestions?

    • @Vpnuniversity
      @Vpnuniversity  5 років тому +1

      L2TP is significantly faster because of how CPU-intensive OpenVPN can be. It's theoretically less secure than OpenVPN, but that theoretical weakness really only matters if you're worried about nation states or professional hackers intercepting your traffic. For most VPN uses (keeping your ISP out of your private business) L2TP should work great.
      Short of that, your best option is to use 128-bit OpenVPN which will get nearly double the speed of 256-bit OpenVPN on your router. The only issue, unfortunately, is that NordVPN currently only allows 256-bit Encryption in their configs.

    • @shalamigri
      @shalamigri 5 років тому

      I've been thinking about getting a newer router anyway. I know that they're starting to beef up the processors in certain routers like the Asus RT-AC5300 and Asus ROG-AC5300.
      A person from NordVPN did contact me though and stated this:
      "Hello, Sean,
      The downside to OpenVPN is that in its current architecture, it is not scalable. It runs as a monolithic process and cannot run multi-threaded.
      This means that if you have a beefy processor with 8 cores and each of the core has 8 threads, OpenVPN will use only a single thread in one of the available cores.
      Regarding routers - they do not have powerful CPUs, thus encrypting and decrypting OpenVPN traffic is a real challenge for them. For that reason, the speed can drop by a large amount."

    • @shalamigri
      @shalamigri 5 років тому +1

      Finally got the Asus ROG GT5300 and NordVPN openvpn is working A LOT better. It has a 1.8ghz 4 core processor. I don't have everything optimized yet, but my hard wired devices are getting anywhere from 50 to 100 Mbps on download speeds. I'm getting anywhere from 20 to 60 Mbps on my 5g wireless devices so far. This router is great. I love that I have the ability to pick and choose which devices get a VPN connection or the default internet connection.

    • @Vpnuniversity
      @Vpnuniversity  5 років тому +1

      Interesting, I did know the issue about multi-threading with OpenVPN. Personally it's the protocol I use on my routers because I rarely need more than 30Mbps anyway, but it sounds like I should do some L2TP tutorials as people report consistently better speeds from that protocol.

    • @Vpnuniversity
      @Vpnuniversity  5 років тому

      50-100Mbps VPN speeds on a router is outstanding! I haven't tried any of ASUS's highest-end routers yet, but I'm thrilled to hear the GT5300 has met (or even exceeded) your expectations. Thanks for the update!

    One question, unless I missed something, I noticed during the tutorial that you had opened the 2 different VPN companies files to WORD , but noticed when you uploaded the CA files it wasn’t from the WORD document but from the original files. Sorry I’m confused, great video!

    • @Vpnuniversity

    • @Vpnuniversity
      @Vpnuniversity  6 років тому +1

      If you want to route certain devices outside the VPN, you either need 2 routers (run the VPN router through the non-vpn router by running ethernet cable from VPN router's WAN to non-VPN's LAN port).
      Alternatively, you can use ASUSWRT-Merlin (3rd-party firmware)'s selective routing capability to do this:
      www.vpnuniversity.com/routers/use-selectivepolicy-routing-kill-switch-asuswrt-merlin

      @@Vpnuniversity Thank you for the excellent video for VPN beginner level enthusiasts, I'd consider myself Intermediate with my networking knowledge not CCNA level but very good grasp of a lot of fundamentals.
      This ASUSWRT-Merlin is EXACTLY what I've been looking for. That plus since you put out this video Wi-Fi 6 / .ax has arrived and is starting to get to a more affordable level. After some research and looking at ASUSWRT-Merlin support I'm going to buy the ASUS RT-AX88U which with Merlin gives me everything I've been after such as the split-tunneling VPN and the ability to even whitelist list CIDR ranges to not go through the VPN! Woot! (I'll also finally get my NAS hooked up with Port-Trunking) I realise DD-WRT probably has the same features on other models of router but going the Asus route with Merlin appeals to someone like me. It'd be good if a video came up in Google search results for people looking for an 'easy way' to do split tunneling. ;-)

    I'm very curious about something. @ the 15:11 point in this video, you specified DNS servers 8.26.56.26 and 8.20.247.20. Have you tried going to ipleak.net while your VPN connection is activated to see if those DNS servers will actually show up? No matter what I specify as the DNS servers in my router, ipleak.net will always show DNS servers from NordVPN (103.86.96.100 and 103.86.99.100) while the VPN connection through my router is active. If I disable the VPN connection, ipleak.net will then detect the DNS servers that I specify in my router. I'm guessing that this is possibly what NORDVPN is supposed to do.
    I bring this up because for the life of me, I can not get Netflix to work on any device using NordVPN and I think it may have something to do with Netflix detecting that NordVPN's DNS servers are being used. I've tried MANY variations of servers using UDP and TCP protocols and nothing seems to work. It seems like the opvn file is binding NordVPN's DNS servers some kind of way. I am currently in contact with NordVPN technical support on this issue and they asked me to use another DNS server and that's how I found this out.

      Usually this has to do with a configuration on the VPN side (not your setup). As long as your IP is changed you should be good to go. IPVanish was having this issue for a while and I brought it to their attention (it's now fixed).

    Great clear video, thanks. However, for my RT-AC86U router and using the PIA service, I found that you have to use the Ios (Apple) config files which contain an embedded CA certificate. These files work on my Win 7 64 system just fine despite the IOS label. After trying all the other listed config files, only the IOS files gave me the blue check mark. This was buried in the PIA guides area of the website.

    • @Vpnuniversity
      @Vpnuniversity  3 роки тому

      I had a similar journey by trial and error. I think I originally used Android and they worked for me, but it may have been iOS. Now PIA has released their nextgen server configs with embedded CA certificate. I used the linux configs in my latest tutorial and they worked perfectly.

      It's possible that your provider limits the duration of VPN sessions or takes servers down for maintenance. In my testing with most providers the connection will last indefinitely.

    Hi,
    Great video I am using NordVpn for years, just learning that my existing router doesn't support Openvpn. May I ask a few questions:
    1- is the same setup apply to the ASUS RT-AX88U ROUTER ?
    2- Do you have a video or can you give me a recommendation on one showing how to setup the ASUS RT-AX88U router ?
    3- My existing router is an old Linksys EA6500, is there anything to do before switching to the RT-AX88U ?
    Thank you very much
    regards

      When that happens, check the router logs, which should show what's going on. Usually it's a configuration issue (you could be using outdated configs or the wrong settings).

      You can do this by installing the 3rd-party mod ASUSWRT-Merlin software. We have written tutorials on how to do this:

      That sounds like a DNS issue. Try manually configuring a DNS server in your router settings under LAN > DHCP > DNS. Google DNS servers of 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 should work.

    So I had to manually change the DNS settings in my router to get it to connect, just like you said in an earlier reply and it seems to be working just fine except for my speed. If I use PIA's Windows app I can still get some really good speeds. I have a 100Mb connection, and using the app it only goes down to around 70Mb. But if I disconnect the app and instead use the router for my VPN it drops clear down to 10Mb, and I appear to be using the same server both times. Any idea what would cause the substantial speed decrease?

    • @Vpnuniversity
      @Vpnuniversity  5 років тому

      You're probably maxing out your router's CPU, especially if you have a single-core router like the ac-66. Unfortunately router CPU's are quite weak compared to a computer (or a smartphone) and they get overwhelmed by the complex encryption.

  • @The_Bald_Fella

    Buddy, please do speed test comparison between the VPNs and no VPN. CHEERS

    • @Vpnuniversity
      @Vpnuniversity  3 роки тому

      Sure, that's a good suggestion. The biggest factor though will be the power of your router CPU and how fast your connection is normally. The ASUS AC68U will max out around 40mbps with a 128-bit OpenVPN connection, regardless of how fast your internet is.

  • @TheRealAnthony_real
    @TheRealAnthony_real 6 років тому

    This is great ... However there is an issue when you want 1 of the devices on your network to go out through the real IP address, for ex. My TV's won't work on netflix through VPN :( and I've been working around with iptables to get them out with the real IP and it's a challenge ... Also the scripts you write have to be run on boot and standard Asus fw doesn't support this ?

    • @Vpnuniversity
      @Vpnuniversity  5 років тому

      You can use the 3rd-party version of ASUSWRT called ASUSWRT-Merlin to route specific devices inside/outside the VPN tunnel. So in this case, you might want to route all devices inside the tunnel and then specifically route your TV outside. It does let you specify certain IP's to route inside/outside but unfortunately Netflix has too many IP addresses and they change too frequently to make it practical. Our Merlin policy-routing guide can be found here: www.vpnuniversity.com/routers/use-selectivepolicy-routing-kill-switch-asuswrt-merlin

    • @Vpnuniversity
      @Vpnuniversity  3 роки тому

      You can use the AC66U and I do use one for tutorials, but it's only single-core so your speeds will likely max out below 12mbps when using the VPN.
      You really need a dual-core router for OpenVPN. I use the AC68U: amzn.to/3kUveqI which is the entry-level dual CPU router. The newer AX88U looks even better.

Still I was unable to get to use their VPN Service.
      Final result I will return this GT-AC5300 by Asus it has 8 ports, and 1 X 2.4Ghz and offers 2 X 5.Ghz for a full refund, and replace it with the RT-AC3100 which has only 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz.

      That is strange. Is it most websites or all websites? Usually you can fix this by flushing your DNS: support.opendns.com/hc/en-us/articles/227988627-How-to-clear-the-DNS-Cache-on-a-computer-and-web-browsers-
      It's worth noting that a small number of websites do block known VPN IP's, especially from popular VPN services like PIA. But it definitely shouldn't be the majority.

    • @Vpnuniversity
      @Vpnuniversity  6 років тому

      That is almost always caused by a DNS error. You can probably clear the DNS cache on your device (instructions for windows can be found here: support.opendns.com/hc/en-us/articles/227988627-How-to-clear-the-DNS-Cache-on-a-computer-and-web-browsers-)

    What about speed test? Is the openvpn connection as good as the regular one? The CPU power is enough for openvpn?

    • @Vpnuniversity
      @Vpnuniversity  5 років тому

      The VPN will usually be slower on a router than on your PC because the router has a small (slow) CPU. It should still be fast enough for streaming 1080P video though.

    • @DukeSaiko
      @DukeSaiko 5 років тому

      It is strange that they call openVPN faster compared to L2TP, while it is really slower on a router. When I turn L2TP on my router I get full speed, unlike with openVPN.

    • @Vpnuniversity
      @Vpnuniversity  5 років тому

      I think OpenVPN may be faster/more secure if your CPU isn't a limiting factor. L2TP is definitely less CPU intensive, so it makes a big difference on a router.

    I have an Asus RT-AC5300 router. I followed your directions and the VPN worked perfectly. The only problem? My Internet speed slowed down dramatically. I contacted Nord VPN and was told there is nothing they can do about that. Did I do something wrong?

    • @Vpnuniversity
      @Vpnuniversity  5 років тому

      No you didn't do anything wrong. There are three reasons for the slower speeds. #1, if you have an ultrafast connection (100mbps+) no consumer VPN in the world is going to be able to keep up with those speeds. Their 1GBPS servers cost over $1000 month to lease. #2, NordVPN is one of the most affordable VPNs in the world, but that means they have to pack more users per server to be profitable (slower speeds).
      And reason #3 is the most important...the CPU in a router is much less powerful than a computers. The faster your speed, the more work it has to do to encrypt the traffic. My router maxes out around 25mbps on a VPN, yours may be capable of 35+ with 256-bit encryption. If you check your router status and see that one core reaches 100% utilization during a speedtest, you'll know that's the reason.

      Check the router logs, it should show what's going on. Often it's a configuration issue. If the router logs don't have enough detail, add the line 'verb 4' without quotes to your config file and try again.
