Scotland's Biggest Show
A Personal Mix of Layouts
23 February 2024
A personal record of the layouts at Model Rail Scotland 2024. The biggest Model Railway Exhibition in Scotland and one of the largest in the UK. Certainly one of the friendliest!
You can tell which I enjoyed most by the length of time I spent recording them. In fact I recorded much more than I remember!
I know that one or two layouts were having problems on the day I attended, especially Eastfield where, I'm told, the exhibitors had to reprogramme all of their DCC point modules hence not much is seen going around.
For a bit of fun watch right to the end of the video to see a gravity-defying train!
Apologies that we didn't get to record something of each of them - either couldn't get near or not much was happening.
Any observations are my own and not intended to show any authority and may show my misunderstanding.

I was there On Saturday. I have binned my attempts at filming and will just watch yours. The ballast tamper at Gresty Bridge was impressive. Dduallt and the gravity train probably were top of the show for me. However, Eastfield, got the wow factor and brought memories of sneaking into the shed in the 70s on our spotting trips up from Newcastle. Thank you Les for sharing another great video.
Thanks. I hadnt realised I'd recorded so much and missed a lot. Eastfield was impressive but having heard the problems they had I wont criticise the lack of operating trains. Gresty Bridge was nice but the devil to film as the action was behind a lot of scenery
Great selection Leslie, a few that I missed in the mix. Good to meet up hope you had a reasonable trip back.
Thanks, you too! It wasn't everything but as I think we discussed, sometimes there was nothing happening - or you just couldn't get near!
An amazing and wonderfuls election of layouts, including a couple continental ones, and shot with your usual high standard and clever eye! Cheers!
Thanks Anthony. The variety and quality was excellent
A nice range of layouts on show there Leslie. Thanks for showing us. All the best.
Thanks Tim
Once again an excellent show. So many good layouts it was hard to pick out a favourite. Enjoyed the gravity train, that was comical.
Glad you enjoyed it. Some good quality modelling there! The gravity train was fun
Hi Leslie, thanks for making and taking your time to make this nice and very good overview.
Never been to the Glasgow show and I saw others making a review as well, and they all showed only the big modern post war era layouts, and I was really under the impression there was nothing else until I saw your video.
My personal choice of theme is era 1 to 3, so I first thought was this is a depressing show, until I saw your video footage, and saw there was more to it than only the to me modern stuff.
Best regards, Danny
There was actually a great variety of eras and styles of layout from the tiny one of a Czech station to the immense Eastfield depot. Personally too many depot layouts but the way some were presented made them more interetsing *Grsty Bridge) But like you I like an older style layout. Glad you enjoyed
that was great Les, there were some incredibly well built and detailed layouts, you must have had a great time at the show
It was excellent. Some real quality and some real enthusiasm. And friendly too!
Les - thank you for the coverage of Dduallt and my driving of the gravity train. It was my induction into exhibition operating so to be granted the permission to run it was indeed a privilege. Great filming - thank you.
Thanks David - I thought I'd keep the fun part until the very end! Exhibition layout operation looks to be a precise activity with a fair bit of concentration. Dduallt was one of my favourites (as you'll have seen by the amount of coverage I gave it). You and your colleagues gave us great entertainment, unlike a few of the other layouts where not a lot seemed to happen.
I was seriously impressed by the backdrops of several of these layouts. So realistic. I suspect they are panoramic photos printed large. A huge difference to the hand-painted ones of yore.
Several firms produce photographic backdrops - a couple of favourites I look out for are Ross on Wye and Port Talbot steel works! The same firms will also print ones using your own photos! Its not often you see exhibition layouts with a hand painted backdrop. Thanks for watching
@@LeslieGilpinRailways Thanks, Les, for that info. It has been a long time since I attended this event (I think the last one was the 2nd time it was in the SECC - and that wasn't yesterday). I ought to have a look online and find out what's out there.
Excellent thanks Les 👍
Glad you enjoyed it

Had many happy day wondering around Eastfield Depot. Used to sit at crash barriers spotting. 🤓💙

Excellent video
Thank you very much!

Hi, I have been watching and enjoying your videos, wouldn't it be nice if the powers to be couldn't allow you on special occasion to be in with the driver and film from the cab as the train is travelling
I know this is not allowed, but once in a while wouldn't it be good
That would be cool Martin but there would be a lot of hoops and hurdles I guess. Its usually the drivers who do those videos.
These are so good I have to put it into my favorites 👍 Joe
Also sub +bell for later
Thanks!!
