I'm an older rider (76) who rides with a younger crowd on fast group rides. A few years ago i started getting dropped before the sprints so I bought a Systemsix. Holy $hi#! That bike increased my average speed by 1.5 mph at 10 less average watts over our regular route. When its extremely windy i change out the 65 deep front wheel for a 35 and have no trouble with handling.
What bike were you on before? Also, are you saying your group now rides 1.5mph faster or are you referring to solo rides? Lastly, what average speed were you at, and what speed are you at now at what power level?

Great video - Fair play for riding in that heat! We went out there last year Mar-Apr so was around 25. The Formentor ride is awesome, also if your looking to head into the mountains from the east next time I recommend coming from Caimari and going up the Coll de sa Batalla I would say it's a better climb than coming from Coll de Femenia
Nah, I didn't actually. I run oval saddle rails though, so alot of the rental bikes might not support it anyway. But deffo one to consider for next time!
So the rental was £140 for 2 days. But if i had gone with a more standard endurance bike, it would have been a bit cheaper. Plus I was stung for only needing it for 2 days. Renting for a full week wasn't much more.
1. Your wife is a smart cookie with that baby grow hack 2. The systemsix has goofy geometry, long rake fork with a super short trail is going to be very twitchy, and not handle any kind of deep wheel at all well. 3. That photographer is crafty, great idea and location, bet he makes a nice payday. 4. Holy mozzarella you're pastey 😂 you need a Giro Aerohead helmet for that sun, no chance of sunburn and its cooler by keeping the sun off. (And no sunscreen in your eyes) Nice video, thanks! 🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖
Thanks galen! I think if I was to run tubeless 28c or even 30c tyres at slightly lower pressues on that systemsix, it would be a game changer. Plus like you say, maybe with some slightly shallower wheels it might not be so bad in the crosswinds...
Myself and my son did the same two climbs back in May this year. We rented a couple of bikes going by the name of "Guerciotti". I've never heard of them before but they were great bikes with Ultegra groupsets and well set up. If you've never been to Majorca then you're missing out. The roads are like polished glass compared to the crap we have to ride on in the UK. Even in the heat I was at least a couple of km/h faster than on rough UK roads. I can highly recommend Pro Am Cycle hire in Port Du Pollenca. I think the bikes were 24 Euro per day. Bargain!
Looks like you picked the wrong tool for the job! Knowing all the climbing you were going to do, you should've gone with the Scott! The 60mm (!) deep section wheels were most likely the culprit in the wind though. I love the variety of your shots, and such great landscape scenery! I've definitely heard good things about Mallorca as a cycling mecca and want to visit someday (Mallorca is also famous for handmade dress shoes, believe it or not).
Hola Luke! Te escribo desde Argentina. Espero que estés llevando tu paternidad lo mejor posible, sé que debe ser muy difícil al principio. Mucho éxito en esta segunda mitad del año!
I live in Mallorca and love cycling but the amount of litter and lack of concern for residents and road safety by "cycling tourists" is outrageous, me and a friend picked up over 2kg of plastic waste left in the mountains after the 312 :(...sometimes I wonder if its better just to have more Magaluf hooligan tourism, at least they stay in one place and don't disturb the locals as much or destroy the wild life...
I had 30mm tubeless GP5000 TT TR with DRIVE 65D on my Systemsix and it made a huge difference in comfort, even more comfortable than my Cervelo R3/R5 and Giant Defy.
@WhatTheFlipOfficial ah makes sense I have some 28 TTs here and some similar dimension wheels on their way, praying they will fit into my rim frame ok- can't wait to give them a go.
Hey man, idk if you still read comments on this video but i wonder. I have a spare bike with dura ace 9000 11spd rim and also my main bike 105 r7000 mech disc. Im 100% certain my dura ace 9000 shifters have a shorter push to shift up and down compared to the 105. Maybe this is a rim to disc shifter thing? Or is it a dura ace thing? I really want my main bike with 105 to shift as quick and smooth as the dura ace 9000. At this point i have considered swapping it and using mech actuated disc brakes. Or a wheeltop eds upgrade might be coming soon depending on your review :)
Bruddah!!! Been awhile for me watching your vids. BUT glad to see you made it to the island of bike!! Yes I have to agree, I have a Felt B2 frame build and chose “tubular” tires and DAHHYUM. Tubulars (Waynos fotos) are a hidden secret for roadies. I like the Veloflex or Vittoria but rugged long life goes to Conti sprinter w/gator center reinforcing. Tubulars with minimum 300tpi are like butter 🧈 over the asphalt. Plus THEY CORNER LIKE a RAZOR BLADE. Try a set of tubular hoops and you’ll wonder WHY IN THE ACTUAL phck did the bike industry move to “hookless” or clincher for roadies (gravel is a different animal).
I use the baby-smoothie-version in the same packaging as a substitute for gels:) Works a treat, tastes ok and is a lot better to open/close and drink/slurp from compared to the "rip open" style gels. It´s lot cheaper too! (Yes, I know, the gels have more carbs, but it works for the a lowly commoner). The full length cable housing is a must in the nordics during the winter/autumn on commuter and gravel bikes, just do it.
Nearly 40C temps? I understand those, commuting in 45C back in my Melbourne days. Buying sunscreen on your ride? You were lucky not to burn. Always apply it 20 mins before going in the sun, real sun, Aussie sun without much ozone, remember? I'm a redhead, so oughta know about avoiding becoming a lobster. I've been using Nokon cabling with 7800, 9000 & R9100 since 2011, always the longest bare cabling possible but covered with Nokon's liner throughout. Hard to get now thanks to Di2. R9100 and R8000 offer fabulous shifting such that I've only tried Di2 once, a full R9270 group which was nice but not nice enough, for me to think of switching. Great views, great review. Cervelo R-series for me, comfort and control, RS, R5 & RCA!
My biggest problem guiding here, is clients getting dehydrated!! I have to keep at them and at them to drink drink drink... U have no idea how many young brit couples I see on the mountain roads in July & August afternoons... and usually in a BAD WAY!! MAD DOGS & ENGLISHMEN!! Luke,,,, This is why us locals go swimming in Summer!! haha..and my biggest gripe here is tourist cyclists chucking their empty gels etc etc !!! U wanna see it after the 312!! Everyone thinks their a pro!! when infact, they are assholes!! The Locals are sick of it too.....I mostly ride my gravel bike here...as there are so many nice back gravel roads that link up.... and it's waymore comfy ! (dundee!) PPS - 2 of my bikes are Chinese bought too... and everything I buy for anything... is from China too!!!
I liked the format, also, you clearly don't regularly cycle in a hotter country, we (in Brisbane Australia) just don't ride during the middle of the day in heat, early morning mostly, or winter months. 32-35 degrees is very painful and in full sun... Noooo.. 😂
I have the DA R9120 groupset on my CX/gravel bike and I personally hate it. It does not shift as good as the mechanical rim brake version of R9100 and I view it as a bad financial mistake (should have gotten Ultegra Di2) as it shifts terribly anything short of full cable and housing (not a fun time finding out). The Ultegra R8025 (or any of the small hands levers even at the Tiagra level) shift better than the R9120. Now it's a beater groupset where I exclusively rip shifts under load and have it bled to 4 piston mountain bike calipers.
Beautiful scenery. Definitely not my kind of bike either (my roadie is a custom titanium job with endurance geometry from Waltly), but would certainly be interested to try something like that out at some point. With regards to your question about internal routing, when I originally built up my road bike, I used R8000 mechanical Ultegra, and I used full Jagwire housing all the way through the frame. Shifting was really slick, but actually building it up was a bit of a bitch. I've since upgraded to 105 Di2 which was a LOT easier to install. Quick thinking on the baby food there as an easy to eat roadside meal!
Great video..as usual. I used to ride an early aero tubed Cervelo S1. Fine on Spanish roads and handled well (just normal alloy rims). But on our rougher roads it was a nightmare: really harsh and difficult to handle on twisty descents because it skipped around so much. Replaced it with a custom Columbus Life steel beauty....completely different. Because there's a bit of give in the frame it's more comfortable and actually faster. My riding mates noticed how much faster I descended straight away.
Nice vid. Great scenery! As for bike comfort -- I was all set to buy an aero road bike a couple years back but then rode a specialized Aethos on rental and immediately bought one on return home due to lively but very comfortable nature of that frame. I'm curious: what does a premium bike rental in Mallorca cost these days?

The Formentor ride is awesome, also if your looking to head into the mountains from the east next time I recommend coming from Caimari and going up the Coll de sa Batalla I would say it's a better climb than coming from Coll de Femenia
OK noted for next time! 👌👌👌
+1
I’ve been using baby food instead of gels for a while now because gels are just disgusting.
There are DOZENS of us!
I LOL'd at the spag bol baby food. Not a bad idea, that. Oh, and Yello: Oh Yeah
36 years old?..Where did you find that fountain of youth? I thought mid twenties at most. 🥖
Don't look too closely, hair is disappearing fast, I think I've got 2 good years left at best 🤣🤣🤣
Which POV camera do you use? The quality looks great!
So the POV stuff is the original Inta360. I think its the One X or something. They really need to sponsor me 🤣
No wonder you were hot with a hat and gloves on while riding lol
Your but wouldn't hurt so much if you were pushing harder. 🤣😅😆
HA, probably true to be honest! Need to spend less time in the saddle 🤣
Did you bring your own saddle? If not, that might have been the reason for your sore butt
Nah, I didn't actually. I run oval saddle rails though, so alot of the rental bikes might not support it anyway. But deffo one to consider for next time!
How much is it to hire something like this?
Really great video as usual. Btw, how much did the rental cost?
So the rental was £140 for 2 days. But if i had gone with a more standard endurance bike, it would have been a bit cheaper. Plus I was stung for only needing it for 2 days. Renting for a full week wasn't much more.
poor baby xD gets taken away its clothing, gets taken away the baby food all just for dad to cycle more xD
1. Your wife is a smart cookie with that baby grow hack
(And no sunscreen in your eyes)
Nice video, thanks! 🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖
Thanks galen! I think if I was to run tubeless 28c or even 30c tyres at slightly lower pressues on that systemsix, it would be a game changer. Plus like you say, maybe with some slightly shallower wheels it might not be so bad in the crosswinds...
This was great, if you can, more of this please.
Bargain!
How much were those photos from the photographers on the road near the lighthouse? I would pay for photos like that too 😅
So they were about £5 each
Loved this kind of content
Caps also help keep bees from stinging you.
That was such a fun video. Nice change
What an absolute specimen 😍
and the bike is cool, too! 😏
Awesome Trip! Glad to see you having a great time 😎💯🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖
Thanks dvc!!!! Yeah was a wicked trip. Editing it together kinda reminded me how lucky I am to do stuff like this!
Careful with that razor!!!!
36?! I definitely would've guessed closer to 30-31!
Ha, thanks Brandon! Dont look too closely, the receeding hair line is REAL 🤣
@@TraceVelo 🤣🤣
Here in se asia 30-35deg is pretty chilly, Im commuting with 42-45deg and eventually I got used to it.
FYI the simplon pride 2 is the fastest tested bike
I had 30mm tubeless GP5000 TT TR with DRIVE 65D on my Systemsix and it made a huge difference in comfort, even more comfortable than my Cervelo R3/R5 and Giant Defy.
Yeah I definitely buy this. 30c tubeless tyres at maybe 65/70psi would be a game changer for comfort on that bike I think 🤔
The gp5k TT doesn't come in 30, is it the S TR? Or do you mean the 28 comes out to 30 on the drives?
@@Jalfred92 You're right, it's 28mm, it's been a while since I had that bike. But it did inflate past 28mm on the 65D.
I feel sorry for your baby.... left naked and hungry 😂
LOL! Sacrifices had to be made 🤣🤣🤣
Full housing here. 🥖🥖
All I can say is 'Grow Baby Go'
😂💅😂💅😂💅 Those who enjoyed🙋🏽the eighties will understand about the nails and makeup thing. 🇵🇷Greetings from Puerto Rico.
I think replacing cables is easier when the cable routing goes all the way through the frame?
@trace Velo
Super enjoyed your video this AM. The veiws were epic, loved the shot the photographer caught of you.
Cheers
Thanks nigel! Yeah I enjoyed putting this together actually, I might try and make it a more regular thing.
Your back isn't breathing with that pack on.
Yeah true. I was lugging round camera gear and extra batteries ect... I ditched it for day 2 tho, SO much easier!
Great content Luke - really like the format & real world realities were very relatable. Beautiful setting for a ride & hope you had a great trip! 🥖🥖🥖
Glad you enjoyed it, but yeah fantastic trip. While I was editing, I realised how lucky I was to be able to do it!
I liked the format, also, you clearly don't regularly cycle in a hotter country, we (in Brisbane Australia) just don't ride during the middle of the day in heat, early morning mostly, or winter months. 32-35 degrees is very painful and in full sun... Noooo.. 😂
Majorca is next level, 6am rides followed by seemingly endless beach days. Loved it
I have the DA R9120 groupset on my CX/gravel bike and I personally hate it.
