Thank you for uploading these videos, they are fantastic! I'm a professional guitarist in the United States and am about to purchase the G20 for my UA-cam channel. Your videos have helped me tremendously in making my final decision to go with this camera! Don
I've spent the afternoon watching all of your HF-G25 videos and I think I've learned more in that time than I would have in a week of ploughing through the instructions so thank you again! This accessories video is also extremely useful and I've ordered much of the ones you have. One thing I've come slightly unstuck on is microphones - I didn't realise that they would need external power. Previously I videod with a Nikon dSLR and I'd planned to use the Nikon shotgun mic for this but of course it isn't powered so is no use. I film a lot outdoors, normally on the water, so in built mics tend to suffer wind noise, hence a good well baffled external mic is a must. I'd like to keep the size down as this all needs to pack away with my SLR kit, and the cost ideally but I'm not after the cheapest available - not worth spending so much on a dedicated camera just to ruin it with poor sound quality. Would you have any recommendations?
Many thanks for the video reviews. They obviously come from someone who not only knows the product, but his subject thoroughly. The reviews are authorititive and with some humour, Once more many thanks, The newly aquired HF G25 has just arrived from Amazon and now the fun begins-----------
I work in the Hudson Valley as a video journalist and have been toting the hf-g20 around for a while now...I just ordered everything in your video because they are the cheapest fixes for what I need. Thanks for knowing your stuff!
600 minutes!! Wow, even with a bit of discrepancy, you're looking probably at least four to five hours of runtime (providing you're not constantly fiddling with the zoom etc) there. That's amazing. I'm so glad you mentioned the adapter - I want to get a Rode mic for mine, and I would've been stewing if I couldn't fit it on the camera! (wouldn't be the first time that's happened lol). Nice to see that light doesn't run off the camera power (I'm not using a light for mine, but it's good to know just in case). Fantastic review, really detailed. Thanks! :)
Hi. Yes, there is a socket which is switchable between AV (composite video) out and headphone out. The former is also the setting you need if you want to hear the sound from the internal loudspeaker when you play back the files.
That's very kind of you to say, thank you very much. I think I shall have to put some time and planning into the other subjects so they won't appear immediately but I shall certainly start working on them. Cheers Dave
It's called the "JJC Mini Advanced Shoe to Universal Shoe Mount Convertor for Canon Legria" but there doesn't seem to be a part number and I threw the box away a long time ago! If you look on Amazon and search for "mini advanced shoe adapter", I'm quite sure you'll find something similar.
Holy David from cruising the cut I needed a mini tour of my cam. I was listening and said this sounds exactly like David and it was. All the best Jim from Halifax Nova Scotia Canada
Hello. If you watch my "Unboxing Part 2" video and scroll to about 5'22", I talk about the adapter. Overall I really like the camera but it's not quite as useable as I first hoped. For just one example, the the waveform monitor is only on screen when you go into exposure settings through the menus (which is tedious when you're shooting) rather than when you use the scroll wheel on the back. I want the WFM to appear whenever you adjust exposure.
Hi. The bag name and model number is in the video description!! But it's a Kata EXO-12 Mini DV Camcorder Bag. I got it from a professional video supplies company called Proactive. UA-cam won't let me post the link here but if you Google "Proactive Video" you should find them. The bad news is that bag is no longer current stock, I don't think - it was an ex-demo one that they had on special offer. But there should be similar ones around if you search a bit.
Hi, thank you. It does not have interchangeable lenses as such but you can purchase a wide-angle adapter as well as a telephoto adapter I believe. Canon make them and there are some third-party ones as well. UA-cam doesn't let me post links in a comment but you should be able to Google them easily enough.
You can buy screw-in telephoto lens adapters, for example, Canon sell the TL-H58 which increases the focal length by 1.5 times. I expect other manufacturers also make similar adapters but I have not tried any of them.
Yes, generally. The cold-shoe adapter is essential, as is the Duracell extra-large battery. The tie-clip mic is a bargain for £20 and the Kata bag is very handy. The light is a bit poor, if I'm honest, but it was only £15 and despite this I have used it on a couple of minor shoots; I should really have been prepared to spend more and buy something a bit bigger I think. I'm also pondering an "Accessories #2" video talking about my tripod, lens filter, zoom remote etc - any interest?
Another very useful video. Please continue posting. Perhaps some 'how to' videos (How to film an interview, pre-shoot planning, post production, sound editing, effects etc.).
If you pull the viewfinder out then it does (just!) stick out past the end of the larger battery but it would press into your cheek a bit, so it's not ideal, I agree. A rear cold-shoe balances it more in your hand (rather than tipping forward with a front shoe) but I agree, front would be more helpful.
I'm glad to hear you say that - Everything is not Always Perfect. As someone who made some cash filming live events the objectives and desires become very simple: Get Video! and sometimes in the chaos of live events having the perfect white balance, expose, et. al. just doesn't happen (though it's nice to do so in studio and great to be able to implement in the field...and more and more I do appreciate doing all that). Now....as far as the newly announced G30 -- ugh! But that's life.
The short answer is that I don't know, as I am in the UK. Duracell products are certainly available in the US so I would have thought a decent local supplier would be able to order one in for you. Sorry I can't give you a direct link.
Thanks for this detailed explanation. I intend to purchase an additional camera because I capture everything with my Canon 5D Mark II. And a good compact video camera is also very handy to have.
Yes, I bought it on Amazon when it was £720. The price changes quite often - I've seen it as low as £699 and other times around £780. I got the adapter from Amazon as well.
I didn't make a note of it but from memory it's 12 hours in 'long play' mode (ie 5Mbps, lowest quality). In highest quality, 24Mbps mode, the recording time will of course be shorter.
That FACT (confirmed) about Panasonic's 4:2:2 saved me $700, and lots of hassle. THANKS!...As mentioned, green screen and keying new to and, yes, lots of tweaks still to try and explore. In general, I'm very impressed how well and easily it works (Final Cut Pro X) -- Now I have a world of backgrounds at my fingertips -- but in this first week still sometimes green fringe on my fingers...So besides needing to explore more 'buyer's remorse' common, esp.if a newer model comes out two days later.
I think that means either the battery is damaged, or the temperature is too hot or too cold. Possibly there is a problem with the camcorder (this is easy to check - see if it will charge another battery). I have never charged my batteries on the camcorder itself, I use a separate charger as it is much more convenient.
Hi there and thanks for the video, found it very helpful! We just purchased 2 of these cameras for a mini filming project we have started (it was between this and the pana hc-v750). Also took your advice and gone for the same Duracell batteries, chargers, shoe attachment and lav mic you suggested. Decided to go for slightly bigger mounted light (Neewer 160 LED's), combined with some 85w softboxes, Vanguard Abeo 203av tripods, and a Rode videomic pro shotgun mic (as we will be filming a mix of interviews and events)!
Lewis Phillips Sounds like a great setup. One tip - mind that the lav mic is fully plugged into the socket and that it has a fresh battery. I found sometimes that I got weird glitches and noise, which I think was a dodgy connection or flaky battery. Best idea is to make sure you always monitor on headphones.
UKAirscape OK great, will do! :) I actually ordered about 10 x Duracell L44 batteries (mic still advertises wrong ones, but you can clearly see the battery in image reads 'L44' - so good job I watched your vid first). I see you also have the videomic pro, do you think this is going to be any good for recording events or will I need something a bit more powerful? I guess it just depends how far away we will be filming... Keep up the good work!
Lewis Phillips The Videomic Pro is a nice mic but generally any onboard mic will only be good for capturing general atmosphere rather than spoken word, unless your subject is standing right in front of the camera. So the hubbub of an event will be picked up fine but if you're interviewing people you'll probably want to pop the VMP on a boompole so you can hold it up close; it may even need to be in shot, depending on how you frame things. Depends how noisy the environment is.
Hi, it was considerate of you to reply to such a mundane question. I was able to search, find and order it. Sorry to hear you have a disappointment with the Legria HF-G215/Vixia HF-G20 - I just order that too. I saw some samples on UA-cam that were just fantastic, quite beautiful so that 'sold me.' --
Thank you for sharing this. I really like camera, especially the manual control but at the same time I don’t understand why Canon placed the hot shoe at the back near the view finder, plus if you have a high capacity battery then it would be so difficult to use the view finder. I did look at the X920 but dislike the way Panasonic only allowing the gain control to be used when the iris is completely open. Come on Canon, where is the battery charger?
Hi, thank you very much for your suggestions, I have brought them all from Amazon! I can find Kata bags but not sure which one it is. What is the name of the bag or model number? Where did you get your, please. I got my camera today which I purchased due to your reviews, I will let you know how it goes. Keep up the good work, thank you. John
Hi! Loving your videos, so useful for me as I'm looking for a decent (but not too expensive) camera! Do you know if you can get different lenses for this? Cheers!
The more colour info you have, the better your keying will be so 4:2:2 will inherently provide better results. But a lot of keying improvements can often be made by tweaks to the lighting and keying filter (depending which you use). There's no reason you can't get "reasonable" results with 4:2:0 BTW I'm almost certain the Panasonic does NOT record in 4:2:2 - it merely outputs 4:2:2 to the HDMI port for recording to another device (which could then record that 4:2:2)
The HF-G25 does not have 50p. The HF-G30 does but is much more expensive. If you already have a Panasonic x900 then I would recommend another one of those, or an x920 as your second camera. That way, the images from each camcorder will match without any need for correction in the edit, and all your spare batteries and accessories will match both camcorders, instead of having to buy new ones for the Canon.
Hello. Unfortunately I do not have such a test, with either camcorder. I'm sure that after today (July 4th) there will be some US videos with either camcorder which show fireworks though!
Thanks Dave. Just purchased one of these camcorders and the duracell battery you recommended. Pleased with it so far! Very helpful videos. Keep up the great work. :)
Hi, you mention the Kata bag. Do you have a model number as there are a couple on Amazon? Many thanks and a very interesting and helpful video without being too technical.
Richard Jarrold Thank you. The bag is model number EXO-12 but I believe they don't make it any more so you'd either need to find one second-hand or pick up their current equivalent which, unfortunately, I do not know the model number for.
Hi.
But here's why I'm sticking with the G25: the G30 is substantially more expensive (I paid £712 for G25 including a Canon rebate; the G30 is £1299). The G30 is physically bigger but the G25 is already quite large enough I think, for a portable handycam. A 20x zoom is good but only on a tripod, which negates the portability of a handycam. I don't need WiFi or 50p and can live without the zoom rocker. So, I think for many people, actually the G25 is still a sensible purchase.
Hello! I just purchased a Duracell battery like yours. Yesterday I used my camera until it is completely drained battery life. This morning I put it on charge, but the red light, rather than remain fixed, blinking. It has never turned off. I tried to turn on the camera and for a moment appeared the writing of battery life (approximately 146 minutes) and then disappeared. Now no longer appears in the indication of the battery life on the monitor.
No; the HF-G30 uses a slightly different type of battery so the ones from the older cameras, including the Duracell I mention in this video, are NOT compatible. As yet I do not know of any third-party batteries that are compatible with the HF-G30, only the official Canon ones.
Can you record video from the cigarette lighter plug in power. I do road videos and the GoPro will run continuously until the SD card is full. If this camera will do the same thing that would be great.
Although we now share the same 'Ugh!' about the HF-G20, i.e. the G30 now released. But since I just purchased my G20 I have one week remaining where I could return it -- I almost never do this but now seriously thinking I might...I think the G20 is pretty good but in one area I want to do, green screen work, it's not so great...it leaves a green fringe on my fingers. I've read the Panasonic AG-AC90 AVCCAM would be better for green screen work because it uses a 4:2:2 color space. What do you say?
Hi, can you write what is the name and number code of the adapter for canon that we see at minute 4 and 30 seconds of this video? Can I find it also in Italy? thanks.
Thanks for the video - very enjoyable presentation style. I know I'm a bit out of date, but have just bought a Legria HF G25. Can you recommend a bag considering the Kata EXO-12 is no longer available
is it possible to record the audio directly into the camera w/ disabled internal mic. I dont want the ambient sounds to screw up the footage. thank you !
I don't quite understand - you want to plug in an external mic instead of the internal one, and not have the internal one also recording? Don't worry, as soon as you plug in an external mic it takes over from the internal one anyway.
Thank you for the review, I found it to be very useful, would you be able to advise for any wireless microphones to use, for example if you were to film at weddings. Many thanks
As with everything it depends massively on your budget. The ones I use retail at about £1000 and are excellent but if you're using a Canon HF-G20, they may be out of your price range. I would suggest watching my review of the new RodeLink wireless system; reasonably priced, sounds decent and will plug straight into the Canon. See it on my other channel, Tubeshootermag, at ua-cam.com/video/snrvdtRxCco/v-deo.html
? for you... What setting are you using to shoot for You Tube? Also when uploading to You Tube what settings for upload to get that great quality that you have? Love your videos PS. please message me back I just got the G20 & having trouble getting great HD like you please help... Thanks
Hi, thanks for the message and apologies for the delay in replying - UA-cam has only just shown me your comment!! (stupid new comment system). I use the top quality setting on the camcorder. I export from editing as .mp4/AVC at 10Mbps, 1920x1080, 25p. Cheers.
Is this camera still the one to get or have some newer model arrived? It do seem a bit older but not sure which canon is the one to replace this. I need it to work for streaming and so on. Thanks for the nice video and the help.
Hi! Does the microphone need to have its own batteries? I need one for interviewing on car events, and the one which you reviewed is not suitable for that purpose. You know those ones have a grab, so the interviewer could switch between him/her and the interviewed person. Any ideas?
Bence Varga Yes, if you're using a Canon consumer camcorder, they provide no power at all to the mic socket so you'll need one that has an internal battery. As the camcorder has no balanced (XLR) inputs you might try something like a Beyerdynamic MCE58 (though I have never used this, so check some reviews first). If you add an XLR adapter box such as those from JuicedLink or Beachtek then a range of battery-powered balanced mics are open to you.
A few questions please. As I am going to be getting one of these camera's sometime in February or March 2014. My questions are: With my current camera, from 5 foot away, I can only get from the shoulders up to the top of a person's head. Does the Canon Camera, has a better close up range, or is it about the same? I do a lot of video's of myself, for doing reports and so forth, and would like to have something that is not so limited. Thank You Wayne
I don't really understand why you'd want to get even close than from the shoulders to the top of the head - surely that's as far in as will look comfortable!! All I can say is that the HF-G25 has a 10x optical zoom; if that's more than your current camcorder, then it'll be closer. Really obvious question: have you tried standing closer to your camcorder?!!
Not sure that I posted the question good enough and for that I am sorry. The camera that I have right now, you have to have a large room in order to get the whole body in. For Example. I am 5'10 The camera needs to be about 13 Foot away from the subject, in order to get the whole body in. How far away does the HF-G25 need to be from a 5'10 - 6' Subject, in order to get the whole body in the frame? Hope this makes more sense.
***** AH, OK, I understand now - you want a wider wide-angle when zoomed out! Unfortunately I don't have the G25 with me at the moment to test your exact question. However, it has a min focal length of (35mm equiv) 30.4mm. If this is lower than your current camera, then it will get more in the image (what is your current cam?). Of course, you can also add a wide-angle adapter to make it wider still - have you tried that on your current cam?
My current camera, is a cheap camera, I thought it was something else when I bought it, and it is NOT!!! (You get what you pay for, right?) DXG-590V I am still learning about camera's, so I really cannot tell you much at all about this one, on the focal range.
***** Yes, you definitely get what you pay for. Your camcorder has a 35mm equivalent at the wide end of 41mm; this is not wide at all. The HFG25 is about 30mm so it would give a much wider field of view. And with a wide angle adapter on it (eg a 0.8), you'd get even more in without noticeable distortion.
Hi. The problem is that "decent quality" and "cheap" do not go together - you may have to go "mid priced" in order to get something decent, just as I did with the Duracell (but they don't seem to make one for your camcorder). I don't know where in the world you are but I found a compatible battery for $29 at LA Color Store (which is a reputable supplier). UA-cam doesn't let me post the link in the comment so just search for LA Color Online. Might be worth a try.
Great vid! i bought the camera just yesterday and this vid was my motivation to do so. Checked loads of vids on what to buy, but yours did the trick! thxn for that :D btw your voice remids me of John clees' voice? has anyone ever told you that ;P
HOW IS THERE CAMERA I AM CONSEDRING TO BUY A SECOND CAME I AM DOING WEDDING A LOT I HAVE X900 WHICH IS VERY GREAT CAMERA PLZ ADVICE PIC QUALITY DOES IT HAVE 1080/50P
UrbanFarmboy I can't recommend anything cheaper than the Duracell, it's already a third the price of the original Canon battery. I know there are loads of cheap clone batteries on eBay etc but there comes a point where you really do get what you pay for. Those cheap cells have crap build quality, crap electronics (eg limited or poor overcharge protection) and crap cells which won't last as long as reputable ones. Given how dangerous an exploding Lithium Ion battery can be, I'd rather have decent ones in my house...
What do you mean by USB stick? If you mean for storage then no, the camcorder uses SDHC cards for that. The USB connection is for offloading footage onto a PC.
+Harry Shires The link to the hotshoe adapter was already in the video description. I have now added a link for a similar charger from the same manufacturer (can't find the exact one I bought back then).
the battery doesn't seems to be compatible with this camera, at least officially. i bought one, and used it about 2 times. only worked once and after that, the charger light ( on the camera ) would keep flashing whenever i use this battery and not charge.
Dear UKAIscape - I watched your video with delight and bought the accessoires you recommended - but my battery Duracell DRC827 isn't compatible with my Canon LEgria HF-G25 just recently bought - How come?
Hi - just bought this camcorder. Excellent in a lot of ways. However, the wireless remote controlling on/off, zoom etc fails to activate the camcorder most of the time. I can see that it's emitting little light signals OK, but the camcorder isn't responding. This remote control is essential to me work. Any ideas?
As I recall, the receiver for the remote is on the side of the flip-out screen, so you need the screen pointing in the direction of the remote (and vice versa). So if you're in front of the camcorder doing a selfie, make sure the screen is flipped around to face you.
Hello again, Have you tested the Legria HF G30? I am wondering if the £300 extra is worth it. The main difference appears to be the zoom x20! Thanks in advance. Richard.
Richard Jarrold Hi. I did a series of tests and explainers on the XA20 which is almost exactly the same as the HF-G30 but comes with a pro XLR audio handle and has infra-red. Apart from that they're the same. The first in the series was the unboxing, at ua-cam.com/video/2uH4Twjo5ac/v-deo.html then there's a series of others - just look back through the videos on this channel. I also gave it a formal review on my other channel, Tubeshootermag, at ua-cam.com/video/kYSSomieAvk/v-deo.html
As far as I recall (and it's a long time since I did that review or had that camcorder), the G25 uses standard LANC control though I may be misremembering that.
UKAirscape Thanks I've been trying to get on with the little remote but find it very annoying that you have to keep the lcd screen open to use it which in windy conditions that screen is like a ships sail
Andrew Weller Hi well trying to find a standard lanc control seems harder than I thought, all I want is just a record stop and zoom to fit on my Manfrotto MVH500AH head, do you have any suggestions?
Hey there - by coincidence I have the same camera and lavalier microphone (ATR3350) that you demonstrate in this video. I plan on doing some interviews with the camera and just finished testing the microphone out. I noticed that I'm getting a lot more feedback with the lavalier microphone than I am with the internal microphone. Care to share the audio settings you used to get this right?
UKAirscape Thanks for your prompt reply. Not sure if it's feedback or just something wrong with the microphone. I tested counting to 10 with the camera's internal mic and it sounded fine. I then practiced counting to 10 with the lavalier mic and there was a persistent "fuzzy buzzing sound". I tried many different microphone settings on the camera, but whenever that microphone is plugged in, the buzzing sound is there. I thought it might be feedback between the external and internal microphone so I stood about 10 feet back, but the buzzing is still there. I tried some of the obvious stuff (unplugging and replugging, making sure it's all the way in). If the buzzing was a typical issue with the microphone, I can't imagine the product reviews would be as good as they are. This is why I think perhaps I have a faulty piece of tech. Any suggestions you have are appreciated. Thank you!
Hi. That's not feedback. Firstly, if the external mic is plugged in, the internal mic is disconnected, so that rules anything out between the two of them. Feedback is when the output of the mic is played back over headphones or speakers, is picked up by the mic, fed back out again, picked up .. and so on, round in a loop which leads to a horrendous squealing sound. That's not your buzzing. There are a few possibilities. One is that you do indeed have a faulty mic. Another is that the battery in it is dead or low (maybe even if it's a new battery, sometimes they're faulty too). A third option (which you say you've checked) was that you hadn't pushed it fully into the mic socket so only one side of the connection was making contact Another, very likely possibility, is that you're standing near something electrical that's causing it to pick up the buzzing. The trouble with these mics (and consumer camcorders like the G25) is that the audio signals are unbalanced and that means they don't reject external electrical glitches like professional gear does. Have you tried recording in different locations? Also make sure everything electrical within a few feet of the mic cable is switched off. Finally, upload a recording of the buzzing and copy me the link, it'll help identify the noise.
Hey there, Good to know that plugging in the external mic switches off the internal mic. I've found a solution to the issue, pretty convinced I ended up with a faulty microphone. I picked up a Polsen OLM-10 lavalier mic (which was only a five dollars more), and the problem didn't repeat itself and the sound is great. I tested the new microphone in the same spot as the old one, so I don't think there was electronic interference, but I'll try the Audio-technica in a couple of other places to see if I'm still getting the buzzing sound. I'll try a fresh battery as well. Anyways, I found a way to resolve this - thanks for your ideas! Glad this problem could be easily solved by spending $20. If I can't get the audio-technica to work properly I'll contact them for a refund. Otherwise, I have a working alternative in the meantime. Thanks again! I appreciate your time. :)
Hey, your videos are really helpful! Thanks for that. However I’m using the Canon Legeia HFG26 for live streaming and I want to manual override and open the lense on the camera. Would you know how to do that?
Hi. It's been many years since I owned this camera so offhand I don't recall but you'd need to put it into manual mode and then you can set the iris to whatever you want (though the widest aperture depends also on your zoom setting)
Hi, I have the Samson Airline Micro wireless camera system that fits onto the top of the camera. I am having trouble with the sound quality. Have you tried this mic system and do you have any comments on it.
Anybody got any good tips for getting some nice depth of field shots on this camera. Just got mine and while the footage is nice it's a bit flat. I've also read about 35mm adapters so I can use the lenses I purchased for my 5d - anybody used one of these before which they could recommend? Great videos UKAirspace.
Learn C# With Visual Studio Community That is symptomatic of unshielded unbalanced audio, which is what the Canon (and all consumer-grade camcorders) offer. The simple solution is to work out what's causing the buzzing - anything from a nearby light, to a mobile phone or some other electronic device) and then move further away from it! The more costly solution is to a) buy a balanced mic and b) buy a balanced to unbalanced convertor such as those from Juiced Link or Beachtek, and then use those in combination to get rid of the buzzing. See my explainer video on the Tubeshootermag channel, at ua-cam.com/video/BMRfmtftGUY/v-deo.html
Then the camcorder hasn't recorded. Either a corrupt card or maybe you didn't format the card in the camcorder to start with (always format in the camcorder, not a computer) or you forgot to press record (I don't mean that rudely, it does happen more often than you'd imagine!)
@@UKAirscape hi, I have managed to resolve the prob! I did initialize the SD Card and when I opened the SD card up and double clicked into a file and double clicked into that file and again... into that file (hope this makes sense...) eventually found an 'MTS File' and that was the video I had recorded! Phew... like Hide and Seek! So thank goodness I now can locate where the canon files are on the SD card. Thank you very much for responding to me, much appreciated
I'm puzzled as to why the camcorder itself says the card is empty then. The camcorder knows exactly where the files are and if they're there, it should see them and be able to play them back. Glad you got it sorted though.
Hi Thanks for a good review of this Canon. I have a question -- do I need to adjust any settings in the camera menu when using an external mic or does it override the Caonon's mics automatically? I assume it does but just wanting to make sure. Also do you have any vids on best lighting settings?
As far as I recall, it overrides immediately. No vids about lighting "settings" though I did do one about using zebra bars for exposure. See ua-cam.com/video/Vo86fpfyyuE/v-deo.html
Is it possible to use a balanced external microphone with this camera?.I have a fairly high-end Audio Technica shotgun mic and phantom power supply I'd like to use.The output on the phanton power supply is a balanced XLR connector. I realize I''ll have to use an XLR female to mini TRS cable in order to connect to the camera, just wondering if it will work since the camera input is unbalanced. Thanks
+JL Humphrey Yes, if the XLR to TRS cable is wired correctly it'll work but of course you lose all the noise-cancelling benefits of the balancing system. Also, I presume the phantom power box outputs at mic level still, rather than amplifying to line level which would overpower the camcorder's input (actually this cam does have a line level setting but it's consumer-level -10dBU rather than pro level +4 so there'd have to be some jiggery pokery depending on the output)
+JL Humphrey Also, be careful with the wiring since if the signal pins of the XLR go to each of the R and S, you'll get the mono signal on both channels but out of phase so any mono listeners will get a cancelled or out of phase signal which will be inaudible or sound terrible. In other words, only one of the hot pins of the XLR should be wired into the TRS jack.
Hola buenas noches amigos solo quiero q me digan algo el brazo o el soporte microfono q lleva canon xa10 puedo poner en canon vixia fg g20 porfavor diganme urgente
awesomo660 I don't ship anything, I'm not a retailer. The Amazon affiliate link is simply a link to Amazon so that you can purchase items from their sellers but for which Amazon give me a small commission, whichever seller you choose. I don't think it'll work for you in Australia though - I'd have to have separate links to Amazon.au Thanks though!
Glad it helped! Hi, from a fellow VJ :-)
+hudson did the same. but had to buy battery from france via ebay. postage was expensive. thanks ukairspace. btw i always use lower case. haha.
Thanks! :)
Glad you liked it, thanks for watching!
Cheers
Dave
It's called the "JJC Mini Advanced Shoe to Universal Shoe Mount Convertor for Canon Legria" but there doesn't seem to be a part number and I threw the box away a long time ago! If you look on Amazon and search for "mini advanced shoe adapter", I'm quite sure you'll find something similar.
Hi Don; thanks for the feedback, I'm delighted to hear it. Have fun with the camera! Regards, Dave
Holy David from cruising the cut I needed a mini tour of my cam. I was listening and said this sounds exactly like David and it was. All the best Jim from Halifax Nova Scotia Canada
Haha hello Jim yes it's me :-)
@@UKAirscape well thanks for the vid it was older but helped me out. Just watched the bread vid looked better than anything i could bake. all the best
Extremely kind of you to say that, thank you. I'm sure you'll enjoy the camera!
Hi. I bought it from Amazon (UK). It's called a DRC827, Duracell Replacement Battery for Canon BP827.
I'm sold....a solid subscriber now! TY for the reviews.
Bravo! Very useful, I am going to purchase the Vixia HF G30 in the US and this was extremely helpful and time saving!
Your video is just so nice and useful to me. Without it I wouldn't know better what i'm buying.. thanks
I actually ordered about 10 x Duracell L44 batteries (mic still advertises wrong ones, but you can clearly see the battery in image reads 'L44' - so good job I watched your vid first).
Great video. Looks like you've got all the stuff you might need. Nice job.
Crikey, what a lot to think about! I shall certainly do my best. I'm about to upload some stabilisation tests that I ran.
Glad you liked it. Definitely worth having a video-oriented camera to complement your 5D.
John
Good video, informative, thanks!
I have one question, which model of the Kata bag is shown in this video?
There's no reason you can't get "reasonable" results with 4:2:0
BTW I'm almost certain the Panasonic does NOT record in 4:2:2 - it merely outputs 4:2:2 to the HDMI port for recording to another device (which could then record that 4:2:2)
The HF-G25 does not have 50p. The HF-G30 does but is much more expensive.
If you already have a Panasonic x900 then I would recommend another one of those, or an x920 as your second camera. That way, the images from each camcorder will match without any need for correction in the edit, and all your spare batteries and accessories will match both camcorders, instead of having to buy new ones for the Canon.
can you add to the camera to zoom in closer. So another words if i was to far and i wanted some extra zoom in power??
GuestOfGregoryHouse Thank you!
UKAirscape Many thanks. I'll have a look around.
If you have time....What is "this little adapter' that slides into the Canon's mini hot shoe (hot shoe, right?)...humm. How do you like the camera?
Hi.
Thanks for very good video. Do the Duracell batteries show the remaining power on the screen. Thanks
Very sorry but I don't remember as it's a long time since I had that camcorder.
Perhaps a bit late, but yes they do. M
Can you record video from the cigarette lighter plug in power. I do road videos and the GoPro will run continuously until the SD card is full. If this camera will do the same thing that would be great.
I'm not sure, sorry. It's years since I had this camcorder. Perhaps someone else can chip in with a reply.
Has your camera run into any problems when using the Duracell battery?
Although we now share the same 'Ugh!' about the HF-G20, i.e. the G30 now released. But since I just purchased my G20 I have one week remaining where I could return it -- I almost never do this but now seriously thinking I might...I think the G20 is pretty good but in one area I want to do, green screen work, it's not so great...it leaves a green fringe on my fingers. I've read the Panasonic AG-AC90 AVCCAM would be better for green screen work because it uses a 4:2:2 color space. What do you say?
Is the Duracell battery for the cannon vixia hf g20 available in the US, if so can you send me a link? Thanks for the great video!
Thank you! I'll check the bag when I get home later and let you know.
No idea, sorry; I haven't looked at camcorder bags for ages.
Thank you for another very helpful video! have ordered the microphone, very excited to use it! :)
Thanks, glad it was helpful, have fun!
Where did you get the Duracell battery for this one? Whats the battery model number? can i buy it some where online?
I tell you, you really publish great, informative videos. I just purchased the Vixia HF G20 last week, and your videos have been a big help.
is it possible to record the audio directly into the camera w/ disabled internal mic.
Cheers.
Hi! can you tell me where did you buy the adapter for the mini hot slide? I need one.
Is this camera still the one to get or have some newer model arrived? It do seem a bit older but not sure which canon is the one to replace this. I need it to work for streaming and so on. Thanks for the nice video and the help.
There are newer models but whether this is right or not depends on your experience, your budget, your projects etc
If you add an XLR adapter box such as those from JuicedLink or Beachtek then a range of battery-powered balanced mics are open to you.
where you can get the support that goes into the camera to fit the focus?
With apologies, I don't understand your question.
Thank you so much for this video - it's really helped me decide on what to get.
A few questions please. As I am going to be getting one of these camera's sometime in February or March 2014.
My questions are:
With my current camera, from 5 foot away, I can only get from the shoulders up to the top of a person's head.
Does the Canon Camera, has a better close up range, or is it about the same?
I do a lot of video's of myself, for doing reports and so forth, and would like to have something that is not so limited.
Thank You
Wayne
I don't really understand why you'd want to get even close than from the shoulders to the top of the head - surely that's as far in as will look comfortable!! All I can say is that the HF-G25 has a 10x optical zoom; if that's more than your current camcorder, then it'll be closer. Really obvious question: have you tried standing closer to your camcorder?!!
Not sure that I posted the question good enough and for that I am sorry.
The camera that I have right now, you have to have a large room in order to get the whole body in.
For Example.
I am 5'10
The camera needs to be about 13 Foot away from the subject, in order to get the whole body in.
(You get what you pay for, right?)
DXG-590V
I am still learning about camera's, so I really cannot tell you much at all about this one, on the focal range.
Might be worth a try.
great video, does it have a tripod mount?
It has the normal hole underneath into which you screw a tripod plate, yes.
Great vid! i bought the camera just yesterday and this vid was my motivation to do so. Checked loads of vids on what to buy, but yours did the trick! thxn for that :D btw your voice remids me of John clees' voice? has anyone ever told you that ;P
Haha, no they haven't but thanks (I think!). Have fun with the camcorder!
HOW IS THERE CAMERA I AM CONSEDRING TO BUY A SECOND CAME I AM DOING WEDDING A LOT I HAVE X900 WHICH IS VERY GREAT CAMERA PLZ ADVICE PIC QUALITY DOES IT HAVE 1080/50P
please how can we use micro in this camera and wich microphone will be good for it ?
thanks
Can you recommend a good battery, which is a little less pricy? Thanks for the video!
Hi is there such a thing as a mini USB stick for the Legria G25? The USB socket on the G25 does look usually small.
What do you mean by USB stick? If you mean for storage then no, the camcorder uses SDHC cards for that. The USB connection is for offloading footage onto a PC.
Hi I have this camera. Where did you get the hotshoe adapter and battery charger please.
Amazon
Thanks.
That's odd, I never had any problems with it. Maybe you have a dud?
The bag is an "EXO-12 Mini DV Camcorder Case"
UKAirscape Many thanks. That's very helpful.
Hi did you ever find a cable remote for the Legria ?
As far as I recall (and it's a long time since I did that review or had that camcorder), the G25 uses standard LANC control though I may be misremembering that.
UKAirscape Thanks
I've been trying to get on with the little remote but find it very annoying that you have to keep the lcd screen open to use it which in windy conditions that screen is like a ships sail
Feedback? I don't understand how you're getting feedback. Can you clarify exactly what's going on for you and I'll try to help.
UKAirscape
Thanks for your prompt reply.
A third option (which you say you've checked) was that you hadn't pushed it fully into the mic socket so only one side of the connection was making contact
Another, very likely possibility, is that you're standing near something electrical that's causing it to pick up the buzzing.
Hey there,
Good to know that plugging in the external mic switches off the internal mic.
Good to hear it's sorted. I'll be interested to hear whether you find the problem with the ATR; let me know!
Hi, can you please do Canon HF G21 vs Canon xa15, please...! Thank you very much!!!
Unfortunately, I have neither of those camcorders, sorry.
Question. If I want a directional microphone, what is compatible for that camera?
Pretty much any unbalanced mic with a 3.5mm jack output, though I can't recall if the camcorder provides any form of mic powering from its socket.
Is there a hot shoe adapter available for this camera? I wanted to mount the Canon DM-50 mic from my Canon HV30 camera and attach it to this one.
Pretty sure i showed one in the video if I recall correctly.
hi whats it like recording in low light thanks
Not great, like all small-sensor camcorders. Also this model is very old now, newer ones will have better performance generally.
Have you tried this mic system and do you have any comments on it.
can anyone suggest a good way to get XLR inputs on this camera? Preferably something that can be mounted on the hot shoe.
Usually via a Beachtek or Juiced Link adapter.
Airscape. ;-) you'll have a tough time getting shallow dof due to the tiny sensor but use max zoom and you might be able to force it.
I'm getting a lot of buzzing with my external mic. How can that be suppressed?
Learn C# With Visual Studio Community That is symptomatic of unshielded unbalanced audio, which is what the Canon (and all consumer-grade camcorders) offer.
The simple solution is to work out what's causing the buzzing - anything from a nearby light, to a mobile phone or some other electronic device) and then move further away from it!
The more costly solution is to a) buy a balanced mic and b) buy a balanced to unbalanced convertor such as those from Juiced Link or Beachtek, and then use those in combination to get rid of the buzzing.

thank you. I am having an issue reading the SD Card! My laptop insists there is nothing on the sd card - any advice? much appreciated! Kas
Does the camcorder see the files?
@@UKAirscape no, it says the sd card is empty
Anybody know where I can buy this - regardless of maker - hot shoe adaptor please? - Amazon does not seem to sell anything..

Will you ship to Australia from the link on Amazon because it says .co.uk also if you do you have the next one up the g30
awesomo660 I don't ship anything, I'm not a retailer. The Amazon affiliate link is simply a link to Amazon so that you can purchase items from their sellers but for which Amazon give me a small commission, whichever seller you choose. I don't think it'll work for you in Australia though - I'd have to have separate links to Amazon.au Thanks though!
Oh ok sorry if I cause any inconvenience
awesomo660 Oh no inconvenience at all, sorry I couldn't directly supply you!
