bit.ly/CanonVix... The Canon Vixia HF G20 is an upgrade to their flagship high-end camcorder, the G10.The Canon Vixia HF G20 has some much appreciated updates over its predecessor.
I know people don’t really use camcorders anymore, but I’m 100% buying this since this camera was made for movies (The movie Devils Due was shot on this mostly), so might as well get it!
As a severe weather videographer, I approve of this camera! Internal audio isn't the absolute greatest but you do get a good amount of control over it and it sure sounds better than, say, a Canon HF 200. The video quality is also really quite good, although keep in mind that it's 1080p where a lot of people are using 4K now. Image stabilization is fantastic, and the controls allow you to really customize how you want the shot to look. Cámara Canon Vixia HF G20 Hello, good morning, I would like to know which lenses I can put on this camcorder and which model of stabilizer cable I can use, I would like to know where I buy them and what data I use to buy them
I've been using this for years. Now I want to split the a/v out to HDMI splitters but my Avermedia C027 won't read the signal from any HDMI Splitter. Anybody else doing this?
On a scale of 1-10, how easy would this be for a novice to pick up? I'm looking to mainly do three things:1. Do one on one interviews (with crowds behind me and to the side and behind the subject- let's say at MGM lobby in Vegas during a big boxing weekend).2. Put it on a tripod like 30 rows back to record boxing press conferences.3. To upload all videos (including the two types above) to UA-cam.
On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the easiest to use) I'd give this camcorder a 9. I'd award a 10, but you will need to spend a little time reading the manual and familiarizing yourself with the controls and MENU features. With just a little patience and practice, you should be shooting like a pro in no time at all. >Mark
B and H Thank you Mark! With the two scenarios I mentioned above (not the UA-cam vids, of course) will the microphone pick up the interviewee's voices or will I have to buy some type of microphone.
You should definitely consider using a shotgun camera-mounted microphone. This is an easy one to use: Canon DM-100 Directional Stereo Microphone bhpho.to/2pOk3mY. Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh@bandh.com >Mark
Disconnect the power source and reconnect it after one minute. Remove the battery as well. Then press the RESET button with a pointed object (like a pen) to reset all of the camcorder's settings to factory default values. My menu screen no longer looks like it does at the 2:37 mark. It is now shows 12 squares with different options. How can I get it back to the former screen?
You can choose where you want your footage recorded. The default memory for recording both is the built-in memory. 1. Open the [Rec Media for Movies] or [Rec Media for Photos] screen. 2. Touch (built-in memory), "A"(memory card) or "B"(memory card) and then touch "X" 3. When selecting the memory, you can check the approximate available recording time/number of photos, based on currently used settings. 4. In recording mode, after closing the menu, the icon of the selected memory will appear on the screen. 5.Select to record movies in the built-in memory or memory card "A" if you later want to convert the movies to standard definition in order to upload them to the Web. NOTES 1. You cannot use relay recording from the built-in memory to memory card. 2. When using a single memory card, be sure to insert it into memory card slot 3. There will be a momentary stop in the scene at the point where the camcorder switches from one memory slot to another. 4. Any of the following actions will deactivate the relay recording function: - Turning off the camcorder. - Opening the double memory card slot cover. - Changing the camcorder?s operating mode. - Changing the memory used for recording movies Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh@bandh.com. Hello there, ok I really want to know if this camcorder have a LANC connector, for like the manfrotto tripod remote controller. please let me know what connectors this cam has, and one more last question, I have a SONY VCT60 tripod that has a remote on the handle built in, and has a A/VR connector. is there any kind of adapters out there that I can use my sony tripod to connect to this Canon cam to operate with
You can select to record your movies and photos in the built-in memory or on a memory card. The default memory for recording both is the built-in memory. AUTO > M > CINEMA > MOVIE Play * Only [Rec Media for Photos] is available from the date index screen or gallery. You can select to record your movies and photos in the built-in memory or on a memory card. I have a couple questions, 1). I can't convert the footage into a mp4 file? 2). Would I be able to upload videos from this camcorder onto youtube 3). The cables that come with this camera does not connect to my macbook air, how can I get videos from this camcorder onto my mac?
+LaloDeGuerrero The included USB Interface Cable IFC-300PCU will connect to your MacBook Air. This camera cannot record footage to an MP4 file. It is an AVCHD camera only. iMovie offers a free app that will convert AVCHD files to various file formats including MP4: apple.co/1NM4kLP The Canon HF G30 will record MP4 (35 Mbps) or AVCHD (28 Mbps). The HF G30 records directly to dual SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card slots. You can record to just one or both simultaneously using different formats. bhpho.to/M4zxy2 Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh@bandh.com>Mark< ? Mark S
The HFG30 is a good upgrade over the HFG20. There are a few notable advantages. The HFG30 has a 20x zoom lens, over the 10x of the HFG20. The HFG30 adds 1080 60P recording in AVCHD as well as 35mbps recording in MP4. The other notable addition for the HFG30 is the wifi capability and smartphone control. Dana G. askbh{at}bandh{dot}com
I have this cam and I love it's quality. The only problem now is that accessing old videos that were on the internal hard drive has become a problem. I took it to the store that I purchased it from and was told that it's been a problem for my model. Now I'm forced to only use SD Cards for data storage. Any help would be appreciated.
Yes, this camera will record while outputting a live, clean HDMI signal. Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh@bandh.com. Mark S.
I shot some photos with my Canon Vixia HF G20. I can't seem to find them; either on the camera or sdCard. I found some files on the sdCard in cpi format, but can't access them no matter what I do. Any suggestions?
+Roger Bemis The .CPI file contains metadata describing an AVCHD video stream, such as the frame rate, frames per second, and aspect ratio. It is used to describe an MTS video stream. There are no images contained in the .CPI files. If you are absolutely sure the images are on the card, you may wish to have a data recovery service examine the card and try to recover these files for you. SanDisk includes RescuePro Deluxe Data Recovery Software with many of their cards. You can also purchase this service if not included with your card: bit.ly/1OzsKJE Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh@bandh.com >Mark
+Ben McCartney Unlike Canon DSLRs (or other brands as well), the Canon VIXIA HF G30 will record continuously to the capacity of the memory cards loaded into its dual SD/SDHC/SDXC Memory Card Slots. The VIXIA HF G30 allows you to record video directly to widely available SD, SDHC and SDXC memory cards with capacities ranging from 32GB all the way up to 2TB. They are available in ultra-fast reading and writing speeds that make it easy to share video. Plus, dual slots on the VIXIA HF G30 enable Relay Recording. The camcorder automatically switches to the second memory card when the first one becomes full, so there's no need to worry about running out of recording time. Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh@bandh.com >Mark
This video does not discuss the PIXELA video editing software that is shipped with the Canon Vixia HF G20. This PIXELA software does not get good reviews, despite the rave reviews for the camcorder. What other commercially available video editing software can be used to transport and edit the video files, saved by this camcorder as AVCHD, without having to first convert them to another format?
Movies are recorded in AVCHD Video compression: MPEG-4 AVC/H.264. Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD accepts this format. Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh@bandh.com.>Mark
i'm trying to remove footage from the G20 and get it onto my Imac (10.10.2). I tried using the ImageBrowser software, but it's not too helpful. It seems to be more geared towards photos. When I click on the camera's "Canon" icon mounted on my desktop, then click the "AVCHD" icon inside, it opens some kind of a Quicktime browser,, with all my footage inside. Can I remove the footage through this without losing quality? Is there another way of getting the footage onto my Imac without the ImageBrowser software?
With the supplied software VideoBrowser you can save to your computer the scenes you have recorded. VideoBrowser offers also many options for organizing your video library, editing video, creating discs and more. Installation: Install the software before you connect the camcorder to the computer for the first time. Refer to the Startup Guide (supplied leaflet) and follow the instructions in the Software Guide (PDF file) to install the supplied PIXELA?s software. VolcanicAsh123 The Canon HF G20 camera records video and audio on various digital storage media, including flash memory, and removable SD memory cards. To bring any of these files into your Adobe Premiere Pro projects, use the Media Browser panel to navigate to, view, and scrub clip thumbnails as well as select the files. Because Adobe Premiere Pro supports the video formats used by Canon video cameras natively, the files import in a few seconds, without complex and time-consuming format conversions. When you?re ready to begin editing, you can open clips and image files in the Source Monitor directly from the Media Browser panel. Or save time by quickly dragging and dropping clips into the Project Panel, where you can directly add In points and Out points to your clips without having to first open them in the Source Monitor. Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh@bandh.com.>Mark

+Gina Marinello I would recommend sending an email to askbh@bhphoto.com. Please let us know the type of computer you are working (mac, pc) and what software you are using to import your video files. Once we have a bit more information we would be better able to assist, thanks. *Andrea
I shoot my daughter's theater productions in a small room that is mostly painted black and at times will have a dark background. Despite the stage lighting, I run into noise problems in the dark areas that also affect the focus on my Vixia HF R400. Is this camera really worth the extra money, or will I run into the same problems in the low light?
+Dave VanDo The Canon HFG20 offers a far more sophisticated sensor and processor over your HF R400 (AGC only) and should do a much better job in this difficult stage lighting situation where there is a wide dynamic range, deep blacks and brightly lit subjects exist in a scene. In addition, the HFG20 offers manual controls and exposure aids: When manual control is selected, the dial can adjust aperture, shutter speed, or gain. Select items to adjust, such as aperture or other settings, with the key. Gain may be manually set from 0dB to 24dB in 1dB increments. Additionally, Auto Gain Control Limit allows you to set the maximum gain limit for the image sensor's sensitivity. With this function, brightness and noise can be balanced as required, and image quality can be maximized in low-light situations.Exposure Lock can be set on or off as can the AGC Limit. Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh@bandh.com >Mark
Is it plug and play with editing systems? In other words if we plug in USB will Final Cut X or Adobe recognize files or do we need Canon software to import first?
The recorded files can be imported natively into FCP X or Adobe Premier without conversion. Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh@bandh.com. Mark S.
+LordStarscream100 The built-in audio is mediocre at best and nothing to write home about. Seriously consider using an external microphone (s). The included battery may offer you between 40 and 60 minutes of continuous recording time depending on ambient temperature, LCD brightness, format and the chosen recording mode. >Mark
How do you change to the ISO when shooting on manual mode? I was shooting some test shots outside and when I got home I could clearly see that the iso needed to be dropped. How do I do this?
hi, can I ask which is better in terms of image stabilization, auto focus and image quality especially in low light, the canon G20 or the Sony HDR PJ 540? thx
Sony offers the superior technology in this regard. On standard Optical SteadyShot camcorders (similar to the Canon HF G20) a single "shift lens" is moved in the optical block to offset camera shake. Balanced Optical SteadyShot with Active Mode moves the entire optical block at once, maintaining the integrity of the optical path and reducing shake. It also reduces vignetting (light fall off towards the edge of a scene) and lowers distortion in videos and still photos. The difference is nothing short of amazing. Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh@bandh.com. Mark S.
I recommend using a bracket: Vello - CB-510 Dual Shoe Bracket with Silicon Rubber Grip (B&H# VECB510). Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh{at}bandh
Hi I use imovie editing software and I feel like it degrades the quality of the video, which editing software would you recommend? And does this camera shoot full 1080p?
The HFG20 shoots in 1080P. iMovie shouldn't degrade the quality of the video before compression if you edit in 1080p though. Another software option to consider would be Adobe Premiere Elements 12. Dana G. askbh@bandh.com
Hello, great review, thanks. I'm wondering, when using the built-in mic, is there any audible recorded noise from the auto focus motor on this camera? The constant quiet annoying clicking?
The focus is electronic, so will be extremely silent, while the internal mics isn?t that sensitive. So, the sound of the Canon Vixia HF G20 focusing during video will not be picked up. *Christina* askbh@bandh.com

How od I get to the REC Media for Movies scree? Does it need to be on manual? Auto? to get to that? Many thanks.
You can select to record your movies and photos in the built-in memory or on a memory card. The

I have a couple questions,
1). I can't convert the footage into a mp4 file?
2). Would I be able to upload videos from this camcorder onto youtube
3). The cables that come with this camera does not connect to my macbook air, how can I get videos from this camcorder onto my mac?
+LaloDeGuerrero The included USB Interface Cable IFC-300PCU will connect to your MacBook Air.
This camera cannot record footage to an MP4 file. It is an AVCHD camera only. iMovie offers a free app that will convert AVCHD files to various file formats including MP4:

The Canon HF G30 will record MP4 (35 Mbps) or AVCHD (28 Mbps). The HF G30 records directly to dual SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card slots. You can record to just one or both simultaneously using different formats. bhpho.to/M4zxy2 Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh@bandh.com>Mark< ?

The HFG30 is a good upgrade over the HFG20. There are a few notable advantages. The HFG30 has a 20x zoom lens, over the 10x of the HFG20. The HFG30 adds 1080 60P recording in AVCHD as well as 35mbps recording in MP4. The other notable addition for the HFG30 is the wifi capability and smartphone control.

I have this cam and I love it's quality. The only problem now is that accessing old videos that were on the internal hard drive has become a problem. I took it to the store that I purchased it from and was told that it's been a problem for my model. Now I'm forced to only use SD Cards for data storage. Any help would be appreciated.
Can the G20 output live video to HDMI while still capturing internally to media on the camera? And with no overlays on the HDMI out?
Yes, this camera will record while outputting a live, clean HDMI signal. Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh@bandh.com. Mark S.

Great, thanks!
You can also purchase this service if not included with your card:

Thx. I believe the pics ended up on the internal memory of the camera.
Would this camera be a good option for live stream broadcasting for continuous durations of over 1 hour without 29:59 auto shut down (like my 5Diii)?

Would Sony Vegas Movei Studio accept this video format?
Movies are recorded in AVCHD Video compression: MPEG-4 AVC/H.264. Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD accepts this format.

i'm trying to remove footage from the G20 and get it onto my Imac (10.10.2).
With the supplied software VideoBrowser you can save to your computer the scenes you have
recorded. VideoBrowser offers also many options for organizing your video library, editing video, creating discs and more.
Installation:
Install the software before you connect the camcorder to the computer for the first time. Refer to the
Startup Guide (supplied leaflet) and follow the instructions in the Software Guide (PDF file) to install the supplied PIXELA?s software.

askbh@bandh.com
B and H How do you upload it to Adobe Premiere
VolcanicAsh123 The Canon HF G20 camera records video and audio on various digital storage media, including
flash memory, and removable SD memory cards. To bring any of these files into your Adobe Premiere Pro projects,
use the Media Browser panel to navigate to, view, and scrub clip thumbnails as well as select the
files. Because Adobe Premiere Pro supports the video formats used by Canon video cameras natively, the
files import in a few seconds, without complex and time-consuming format conversions. When you?re ready to begin editing,
you can open clips and image files in the Source Monitor directly from the Media Browser panel. Or save time by quickly dragging and dropping clips into the Project Panel, where you can directly add In points and Out points to your clips without having to first open them in the Source Monitor.

In addition, the HFG20 offers manual controls and exposure aids:
When manual control is selected, the dial can adjust aperture, shutter speed, or gain. Select items to adjust, such as aperture or other settings, with the key. Gain may be manually set from 0dB to 24dB in 1dB increments. Additionally, Auto Gain Control Limit allows you to set the maximum gain limit for the image sensor's sensitivity. With this function, brightness and noise can be balanced as required, and image quality can be maximized in low-light situations.Exposure Lock can be set on or off as can the AGC Limit. can I mount RODE mic in its hot shoe just like I mounted it on my DSLR?

I have two questions, not sure if anyone can answer them - how good is the audio quality, and how long does the charge last?
+LordStarscream100 The built-in audio is mediocre at best and nothing to write home about. Seriously consider using an external microphone (s). The included battery may offer you between 40 and 60 minutes of continuous recording time depending on ambient temperature, LCD brightness, format and the chosen recording mode. >Mark
B and H Sounds good, looks like I'll keep searching. Thank you so much!
How do you change to the ISO when shooting on manual mode? I was shooting some test shots outside and when I got home I could clearly see that the iso needed to be dropped. How do I do this?
There is no manual ISO setting available. The best you can do is to select a scene mode. >Mark
On video cameras, they refer to "gain", which is how much additional boost is used on top of the native ISO.
can you explain about the battery life ? hours of continuous recording ?

hi, can I ask which is better in terms of image stabilization, auto focus and image quality especially in low light, the canon G20 or the Sony HDR PJ 540?
The difference is nothing short of amazing.

does this camera have night shot
Hi I use imovie editing software and I feel like it degrades the quality of the video, which editing software would you recommend? And does this camera shoot full 1080p?
The HFG20 shoots in 1080P. iMovie shouldn't degrade the quality of the video before compression if you edit in 1080p though. Another software option to consider would be Adobe Premiere Elements 12.
