Something I figured out in Pokemon design is that all of them have to take into account how they'll be transformed as merch. That includes plushies, keychains, etc. Simplifying most shapes (complicated forms becoming just circles/triangles) or having just 3-5 colors as opposed to an entire spectrum just fits the Pokemon design perspective more.
THIS!! SPECIALLY with starters, my philosophy for them is that if i cant see them turned into plushies in the same shelf of sanrio and kirby characters plushies, they need to be simpler/cuter, since startes NEED to be plushie-able for comertial reasons, and achieving that is what gives you the official look
Agreed. There is another factor that I think gets taken into account when designing Pokémon: the anime and possibly in-game features and/or battle formats. Let me explain. Most or at least numerous people understand that Incineroar is based off of heel wrestlers, tigers, and a professional wrestler known as Tiger Mask. However, a thought occurred to me recently, and I apologize if I'm late to the party on this. I think Incineroar was designed with both the Battle Royal and the character/alter-ego Masked Royal in mind. Either Incineroar came first, the Battle Royal came first, the Masked Royal came first, or these ideas came about simultaneously. Additionally, Pokémon need to be designed with both the anime art style as well as the Pokémon anime in mind, regardless of whether or not they'll be plot relevant. If you can't set them in even one anime episode, the design may either need to be reworked or scrapped.
18:00 For different colors, it would've been cool if it was like aging copper going from orange to a greenish color to show the progression of the pokemons age.
That would tie in the Steel typing perfectly! It'd also make the wise, ancient dragon aspect even more prevalent. So many designs are made by talented people that just lack that little bit of a second opinion and some brainstorming, like what Gamefreak actually has! Stick these artists all in a room together and have them make a Pokedex working together, and it'd come out perfect!
Well while my designs did not make it into the critique part I saw them on screen (0:27) for a split second😁 that’s close enough for me^.^ congrats to all the designs that got chosen. These kind of videos are super helpful even if your designs do not get picked. Amazing opportunity for artists to learn and develop their skills. Hope the video does well!
Awesome to see so many great Fakemon artists in this one! And some really valid critiques! Even though Pokémon are simple at their core, they’re still hard to master designing!
I always learn so much about how to improve my own character designs whever I watch your art videos. Videos like these that give genuine critique while also being so positive are so encouraging 💚💜!
Yeah that's what a lot of people who critique stuff do wrong. They're overly critical on the design. Ron instead gives positive feedback and says oh if you tweak this a little, then it might work better. Positive words encourages people to change something rather than being critical and saying change this or it's not good
As someone who's planning on designing Fakémon soon, I'd absolutely love for this series to continue with a part 4! I feel like I've learned a lot from your critiques before even having drawn a single Fakémon!
The expression of the Steel type is actually referenced in the colors. All I have to do is point to the Statue of Liberty. When copper oxidizes, it becomes that pale green color. I suppose the color doesn't make sense for it's 1st form since it's not a steel type yet. Perhaps the first form should be more brown like copper and without those scale-like plates. It's second form is mostly copper/brown, but perhaps those pale green scale-like plates begin to appear. Then it's final form kept as is.
I think a really fun series would be for you to look at, not Fakemon themselves, but art of creatures from other monster collection games, and compare and contrast the different design sensibilities of them vs Pokémon. It could be interesting to see what makes something *not* look like a Pokémon, even if just in a “here’s what to avoid when specifically making a fakemon” kind of thing If this idea interests you, I’d suggest looking at designs from Cassette Beasts, Monster Sanctuary, and Spectrobes
Ron I think you might be right. This batch of Fakemon is too strong. I can't keep up with all these guys! I'm jealous! DX But seriously, this was fun to participate in! Even if my little fireflies didn't make the video, I'm happy that they got noticed in some way. It's also nice to learn how to make a more convincing Fakemon, even if the artist and or philosophy are different!
Just to critique your critiques: -Litten is not an obviously fire starter in any of its evolutions. -Dragonaire and Serperior are long snake proportioned Pokémon. -Falinks, Mousehold etc are Pokémon made up of multiple Pokémon. Love all the advice and critiques, as well as all the fakemons! Just wanted to counter argue a couple things.
Critiqueing your critiques of my critiques: - Litten is very much charcoal with red accents. Like I said, the accents can hint at the typing in the starter, unlike the example in the video. - Those are perfect examples to SUPPORT what I’m saying. Dragonair’s neck is thinner to accentuate its head, making it look less like a snake and more like a dragon. Serperior is very much WAY thicker than a real snake and has a huge head. Compare its proportions to the fakemon in the video. - I never said multiple Pokemon in one wasn’t possible. Just that the anatomy of the fakemon in the video is a mystery. (But that may also be the point)
@6:39 i think the word you're looking for is: Vibrant. for the starters the Red (Fire), Blue (Water), and Green (Grass) are for the most part more vibrant.
I’ve only done one Fakemon before, very recently (as in literally yesterday) but my main problem is that I *cannot* mimic other artstyles. My art style is very unique and noticeable and a large part of the way I draw, and I can’t draw in any other style without it looking really horrible.
You’re right these are great submissions and your critiques are very valid with little tweets some of those fan designs can give the official Pokémon a run for their money
I hope that there'll be even more of these because I submitted my own Fakemon which is "MissingNo but an actual Pokemon". It has a lot of insipirations and I'm extremely proud of it.

Grass deer already exists with the Deerling line, but that's not to say it can't be used in another way. Do you have any concept art for these? As an Irish native myself, I'd be interested in seeing your take.

I’m planning on creating my own fakemon line that is a regional form of espurr and Meowstic, but what’s different is that 1. Espurr is able to evolve into many unique forms, similar to eevee and 2. They’re all based on different feathered dinosaurs. It’s not like eevee where each evolution corresponds to a different type. Instead, each evolution has a unique type combination based on the biology of the real animal and putting a Pokemon spin on it in some cases. This is not meant for any fakemon region, this is just simply a passion project focusing on not only giving my favorite Pokemon some love, but also combining that with my love for feathered dinosaurs.
For darksilvania's pokemon I think they could be clothes I mean if you look at their hands it seems like they could have made the clothes themselves and they want to hide in those clothes just luke Mimikyu does

@@goddessdeedeebubblesofimag7789 There's no need to be rude and condescending about it. Saying "and he;s giving constructive criticism" is just as effective. This came off as really rude and mean. Yep! And they sent it into him to hear his opinion and see if they can improve anything! Most artists want constructive criticism to make their designs better. That was the entire point of sending them to him in the first place.
Good art everyone. Some of these are incredible, and then some of them just bring me a chuckle. Goofy lil guys. edit: I need a Gorf (the round seal boi)
13:04 actually, if you look at this design, there's a real issue with colors. The general idea seems to be: a purple tiger with black stripes and white head, legs and arms plus the white skull on the torso. But then have a black tail with purple stripes for some reason, that purple diamond on the torso (which should certainly be black), and the light purple belt and that thing at the end of the tail that are of the same colors as the emanations. Maybe one of those details could be kept, but you could also easily simplify the design to be more efficient. That pokémon doesn't need a belt, a diamond, a special thing at the end of its tail, and its tail doesn't need to have a different color scheme.
its cool how Rip-R-Jax is based on jack the ripper if not a bit too dark to have a pokemon based on him(presumably a him) also Rip-R-Jax could collect discarded clothing to hide their appearance its not like pokemon that wear objects dont already exist cough cough mimikyu
Iron Blades Type : Dark/Psychic Abillity : Quark Drive Stats HP : 82 ATT : 148 DEF : 77 SPA : 93 SPD : 77 SPE : 93 Scarlet Entry : It ressemble a certain pokemon introducted in a paranormal magazine described as the pokemon that put humans who stare at his eyes in a never ending nightmare and stun them forever with his Psychic powers. We haven't found a cure yet Violet Entry : It's possible Iron Blades an Absol from the future described in a old book, may actually be this pokémon

its cool how Rip-R-Jax is based on jack the ripper if not a bit too dark to have a pokemon based on him(presumably a him)
also Rip-R-Jax could collect discarded clothing to hide their appearance its not like pokemon that wear objects dont already exist cough cough mimikyu

Violet Entry : It's possible Iron Blades an Absol from the future described in a old book, may actually be this pokémon
I know it's a métal réskins but so does every future paradox pokemon
And im more focused compétitive speaking than design speaking
I wanna see truegreen7 set up a challgen where a fan can get their pokemon in his up coming new region
No offense to any of the others but DarkSilvania is my favorite fakemon artist. Im glad he called him under-rated
Finally someone that point the major problem of Fakemon Overdesign!
they are not bad, just overdesinged, looks almost like Digimon(I love Digimon but c'mon)
so cool, i love these videos!!!
segamastergirl has an awsome concept reminds me of the Raltz line up (I'd make a male version of the final form)
I feel like the spikes are fine i wouldn't change a thing and those starters designs that he was saying to much detail i actually wouldn't change a thing
The kids in a trench coat one makes me want a dark type falinks stacked up in a trench coat
I absolutely love these!!! Plz do more
'How can you have three pokemon in a coat?'
Tandemaus: ......
Falinks: >:(
Well, those look like actual pokemon, while just having three pokemon in an actual coat just looks weird
Well maushold and dugtrio/wugtrio exists @Irish_Mann
18:58 this is beautiful. I have stared at this for months now :/
"How would three pokemon exist in a trenchcoat" My guy forgot that maushold and dugtrio exists
Wait he's talking about pokemon needing less colors and xerneas has like the whole rainbow.
Wow, that's a lot of the first fakemon. I wonder when he'll go to the second?
The term "Pokemon artist" make it sounds like you actually designed official Pokemon
"3 pokemon in a trenchcoat how does that work biologically"
We do now have 5 pokemon being classified as one pokemon
5:06
The Pokémon's name right here can be called Poisona
4:27 dugtrio is currently glaring at you as you're saying this
I would love part 4!
It'd be crazy if TrueGreen decided to critique popular pokemon-inspired games like those ones on Roblox, or something of the sort.
Love Ekirion. Would totally have that in my party.
Thank you so much for giving me inspiration for my own fakemon region i am make and coding a game which should be done in a couple years i would love if you were the one to first person to play it Ron since you inspired me so much
