Forest zones like Teldrassil, Ashenvale and Elwynn Forest give you that fantasy experience the most. But I've always loved deserts more. Desolace, Tanaris and Silithus. The sense of isolation these zones gave me was never surpassed in the expansions.
Same here. The newer expansions seem to plan area design in terms of how to most effectively get from point A to point B with no wild areas just for the sake of immersion. paths cross over each other for no apparent reason, even going in cricles around the map. quest viers no longer feel like they are situated in a practical city, but are just standing on some platform 10 yards away from some demon lord. I wish they made the areas prioritizing plausibility above effectiveness.
i've never realized what it was, but you are right! though i liked the first open desolate area in TBC too. forgot the name ^^ (EDIT: hellfire peninsula)
The soundtrack mixed with the feet of your mount running on the sand, armor clanking while running, vendors greeting you when you click on them. The combination is unmatched.
By far one of my favourite zones in Vanilla. I remember walking over the hill from 1000 Needles, seeing Gadgetzan from afar and thinking I could tackle the place at level 37. Turns out I couldn't so I went back to 1000 needles and farmed Basilisk until level 40. Also home to one of the best Vanilla dungeons. Soundtrack is one of the best.
Tanaris was my favorite zone because of this music. It was in the spirit of Diablo 2, Lut Gholein. Creepy, exotic, mysterious. They should never have changed it.
I remember when I was in school about 12 years old, I was leveling my night elf druid. My brother's paladin was a more leveled than my night elf and he was killing hyenas in Tanaris and I couldn't wait to reach the zone because there was a mystery about it and the isolation felt so nice. I remember playing mostly during night time and Tanaris felt wonderful during night time :)
This zone is amazing. Desert with open sky without any clouds. Looks like you not on planet, but in Space itself. First time you just can think, that you will lose gravitation. Perfect freedom with emptiness to the whistle sound. And feeling of some scary things. Especialy when you see THOSE CLAWS! Remember my first WotLK Night Elf hunter with a spider. Nice days.
Thank you for posting this. I haven't played Warcraft in ages because I feel it has lost its original feel and fun that were so pleasant in areas like tanaris. I enjoyed Vanilla and the next two expansions, but I started to lose interest afterwards. Watching and listening to this makes me want to start playing again, starting all over and only playing Vanilla (and maybe Burning Crusade). Thank you for rekindling my love and fond memories of this game.
I miss the real time gameplay, if you found a server with the exact same timezone, you had the exact same day cycle as real life, every spell/potion/curse duration was in real time, 20 minutes is a real 20 minutes, that was really unique, made it feel like a parallele universe. It was always night in my games cause I was playing late
Tanaris and Stranglethorn Vale were two zones that I hated back in Vanilla because of how much of a gankfest the two zones were. Now, it's almost a painful nostalgia hearing this ambience again. I wish we knew when the good ol days were back when we were actually living through them
I didn't get my carrot on a stick until 60, no one had the mallet to summon Gahz when I completed ZF the first couple times. Those were the Vanilla days when we were all scrambling around lol
You missed a major boost regarding your mount speed :D Just joking. There was nothing noticeable. At least not for me. But it was very cool I had a trinket at that level. It was a rare thing!
Tanaris has a big spot in my heart. First time visiting Tanaris was painful. I hated it. Basically leaving safe place that the main camp was, meant instant death by lurking enemies, waiting for you to leave the camp. But now? I barely see anyone there. Most of the time I am there alone. Realizing I miss how alive that camp was. And so Tanaris is my big memory of painful, but fully enjoyable experience in wow. Feels like everyone left
Making a group for ZF and going for snack while people travel and you wait for them, then some high level opposite faction hunter guy shoots you, then he feign death and all the goblin mofos kills you before you come back from kitchen xD
For me, it's this 'edge of the world' sensation that few zones have in wow. I still remember the first time I found my way to the zone: I'd been out in at the racetrack in the shimmering flats when a huge sandstorm blew in over the area. Completely lost, I desperately tried to find the edge of the flats and stumbled across this small path leading away from the storm. Well over the ridge the music shifted and I could spot a huge gear through the storm. From old written guides I'd seen that weird sign mentioned and decided to head into the town. All in all a very cool and immersive experience, at least back when I was 13. In hindsight, that 'sandstorm' might have just been the short view-distance on my potato pc, but it really added to the experience.
it really was magical, stepping into these zones. it felt so alive. like you were truly stepping into a hostile and unforgivable dessert. compare this to vol' dun. vol' dune looks like if you crammed an actual desert into a little disneyland pocket. you dont feel the vastness the only danger you get in voldun is how much you filled your azerite quota. old tanaris, old thousand needles, old shimmering flats... they really did feel like stepping into the mojave, salt flats race track, and the dunes of the middle east.
Tanaris was the first zone I went through that felt "vast". Like, this is the point where the game is getting challening. The omnious music helped set the mood.
Tanaris was full of danger and mystery to me. It was similar to STV, but the emptiness and the vastness, like you said, made it a much different experience. I don't mind Cata's iteration of Tanaris, but it doesn't feel the same without the original iconic desert tracks
I love Tanaris. My friend recommended I go there because it had a bunch of cool quests. It was an interesting journey to get there as an Alliance player. I had to take the boat to Ratchet, and travel all the way through the Barrens and the Thousand Needles since there were no flight paths for me to use. I spent a couple months there I think just grinding up levels and killing mobs. Zul'Farrak was a pretty cool dungeon and one of the quests for there gave me my first trinket, the Carrot on a Stick. Trinkets used to be very rare and hard to find outside dungeons and such. Oh and the music is great too! Very relaxing but also makes me think just how hot and harsh it must be with all the giant scorpids, trolls, basilisks and ogres everywhere.
I remember my trip was different a bit, I came from Stonetalon Mountains -> Desolace -> Feralas -> Thousand Needles -> Tanaris. I think I enjoyed most the lack of physical barriers here. An open space which initially would trick you that it's going to be easy to travel. But I was often dismounted from my mount and end up fighting at least 2-3 mobs. Awesome, like all zones actually :D Meisio
So many good times ganking here. I forgot how much amazing world pvp happened in this spot, especially up at the flight point just North of town and around the summoning stone to Zul'Farak. I really miss this old place. I must have spent a whole summer here in my 40s on my feral druid just running around having fun, seeing how far we could get in Zul'Farak, trying to get godly gear out of there, and just dueling in town. This zone was amazing.
That part used to terrify me. Hearing it over and over and over during the hours I spent in Tanaris/Zul'Farrak... began to feel like the heat was driving me insane
I find myself playing Tanaris music every summer. It gets hot where I live in Northern California during the summer, but if you want the true Tanaris experience you should go to Arizona, the desert there more closely resembles Tanaris.
my love since first entering in naga area at the north of darkshore. Also BFD, favorite dangeon... If someone asq me what is my favorite game - ill answer WoW, but I think this is more than just a game - this is part of our lifes. For real.
Remember the first epic I found was a Nightblade off a hyena in Tanaris, which was fitting as Nightblade was also the name of the guild I was in at the time.
My favorite zone. Not had the chance to discover it before wotlk, but as a tauren warrior I enjoyed listen to the music of Tanaris when I was farming mithril, gold and others by making circles at 3am when nobody's where here. True desert and loneliness with this music.

Back to the old days. I have mix feelings about this place. When i was lvling one of my character the sister of my mother she was a very sick she was suffering from the damn cancer.... She was ready to go in hospital... She turn back to me and she told me.. I will come back... She never came back... Every time i hear this music.. I can hear also her voice.. I still waiting.. My god.
Funny how memories work. Also, unfortunately, life isn't kind to some of us ...😿 At least that story doesn't prevent you 100% from enjoying the piece, I guess.
Vanilla mostly, I believe it was Hayes who put all the efforts not into making a background band following you on the journey but a set of sounds that hit the primitive feelings and conjure up an image of a place you are supposed to be in.
Cette musique provoque tjrs bcp de nostalgie, me ramène à une période triste de ma vie où je passais toutes mes journées sous le jeu notamment bcp de temps à Tanaris.
Now it felt like it was all like my lullaby. As an adult, I remember life in my youth. Weird feeling. I love azeroth... I love earth... 2 world. 2 soul.
Remember getting that mask from ZF on my first run and I use it for so long I didn't want it to change it when my next bis drop and I store it on my bank later look so cool for me cause I was a warlock
I really liked Tanaris, there was always an eerie feeling to this zone. It had giant bugs, pirates, ruins, dead bodies, a lot of sand and several mysteries to uncover.
I wish I could go back to this time in my life, literally close my eyes and can almost feel the warm sand under my feet. What a time to be alive it was.
The music and the zones are undoubtedly the only truly positive things (and rightfully so) for me about WoW in the present day. Sure, I have great memories from when I was a child... but as an adult, the magic of the basic idea of the gameplay was gone. Nothing left but the catering to other people who got nothing else going for them than their progress in the raid, equipment or social standing in their guilds. Unbearable. Will listen to WoW's music and remember the times when I felt at peace with the game; playing alone and exploring.

I miss this barren place
If Stranglethorn Vale was Vietnam of Wow, Tanaris is Afganistan and Irak.

Easy easy universe doesn't take in living ❤️
Cool!
my fav. zone
After all these years of playing WOW, I just realized that Gadgetzan looks like Mos Eisley from afar.🙂
I loved that quest kill those orcs or humanolds
This may be a dumb question... But how did you move slowly in the air at the beginning?
Did you zoom the camera in during editing or some such?
No way no people and stranged sound..
I prefer these over Everness'
for future me 38:12
Liam Murphy I used it too. Makes me think of Wailing Caverns pretty strongly
Soon on Shazzrah EU😉 For the Forsaken!
The ambience and leveling experience are unmatched. Wow truly nailed those aspects.
