  • The hunter & gatherer Theory from Thom Hartmann suggests that our brains might have been the result of us being hunters back in the early days of civilization. If this is true, how can these hunter traits be used to our advantage in todays time (be it in the work environment or at home)? This and more is answered by Astrid McGuire, who is a certified ADHD Coach, having helped lots of people with ADHD work with, rather than against their brain.

    I would add that if you have a lot of out of the box ideas and are a good problem solver, make sure you have the good education so you don't end up in a job where that sort of thing isn't valued.

I couldn't tell you what I just listened to or that I just washed the dishes.I just forget and move on to the millions of other things going on in my head!.....btw thank you for your channel. Story of my life haha. I like to think im being more 'productive' by listening to podcasts while doing the dishes but it's like the words I'm listening to just flow in and straight back out, I will pay attention and grasp one full sentence but then my thoughts run wild and I try and relate it too every scenario in my life and I completely loose my spot in the podcast, It's a vicious cycle haha.

    I thought sales was my thing, but discovered that I can't do it because I am analytical and cannot stop all my honest thoughts to screw it up. I am too spontaneous.
    Also I think sales are extremely monotonous, I will just want to sleep after one hour ;)
    The third reason why sales doesn't fit me is because I am afraid to forget the things I should say or saying something wrong. But this would probably not be a problem after some experience ...

    I think the point Astrid is making is that people with ADHD are more likely to already have a growth mindset rather than have to acquire one. This is because of the more creativity and resilience involved with how the ADHD brain works and how we cope with the world we find ourselves in. This more natural mindset orientation can be used to our advantage.

    It’s important not to use ADHD as an excuse and instead address your weaknesses as you would as a neurotypical. I see a lot of people using ADHD as an excuse to be impulsive, aggressive, forgetful, cutting into conversations etc. If there are issues we can work through them.

    Yet i got only the main idea of this theory, i find it very interesting. Just started to listen the video from chapter "Reading Books" LOL, to hear that should be fine to start with any chapter. I had to pause at minute 44 to write some connections i made about hunters and farmers, right now, from my personal life. We are 2 ADHD girls, she just got the diagnosis, i still did not go for it. We both got into independent animals rescue with no conditions to do that (we had to find foster spaces, pay vet treatments, food payed, find responsible adoptions), because the situation was in front of us and somebody had to do something. At home, we currently have our adopted pets: she have 2 dogs and 5 cats, i have 3 dogs and 2 cats. Our relating, communicating, understanding body language and all, with animals is spontaneous, is something normal, we did not need outside teachings. Yet, we are not really capable to keep a plant alive in a pot. Not because of cats, isolated in a room. I even killed a cactus. On the other side, i have another friend, girl, neurotypical, she also have dogs, perfect healthy routine and she is a plants guru, growing perfect food plants in her garden. As for her dogs, is a different story. The dogs are in good care, but it is interesting she needs to take lessons and to apply techniques regarding all their dog-humans interactions. I would be curious if this characteristics are not just my isolated case, if they are related, because they are so obvious for 'hunter and farmer' :)

    Hasn't this theory been debunked? Agriculture has been around for say 10,000 years, yet somehow our brains have evolved to be hunters or farmers in this time? Not to mention that once farming and animal domestication took off, the need for hunting dropped off a cliff.
    As someone with ADHD, I can see the appeal of wanting to think of myself as a hunter. But come on, it seems like nonsense as soon as you think about it for 30 seconds.

    This theory about ADHD hunters is debunked a decade ago! Hartman himself said it was more a metaphor than anything. There’s no science to support. It may sound romantic, but a hunter really needs all his executive functions! I recommend to listen to Rusell Barkley instead. I didn’t make this talk more than ten minutes. So I cannot tell if there are any tips of worth later on.

  • @carlclarkarmyret137
    @carlclarkarmyret137 Місяць тому

    Hey, let's turn it around. Maybe it's not lack of attention, but hyper attention. Man spent lot more time on the menu than being a hunter. What Farmers might call attention deficit, hunters call, don't get your ass eaten. It's all how you look at it. I think the predominant theory is man must focus on what other men require, therefore if you cannot, or cannot for a required amount of time, there is something wrong with you.

    Awkward - I don't think we were ever hunters and gathers. I think we were created as we are now, not coming from ape men. I'll skip to your recc'd video. :-)

    • @johannnna93
      @johannnna93 29 днів тому

      I agree with you actually. Maybe another planet. I don't like the idea of coming from ape men. Neuro typical people maybe if that's what they'll prefer to believe.. But not me.. And people with ADHD, I think we're the newest type of humans to come to earth actually. People can call me crazy but that's how I see it..
      The ape men theory is just a theory. And there is not enough evidence to support that actually. People should not believe everything they teach us in school🤯

  • @petersimmons3654
    @petersimmons3654 5 місяців тому

    A major problem with this theory is the term hunter gatherer applies to a society, men were not hunter gatherers, they were hunbters, women were gatherers; all the evidence points to gender roles where male hominin went off huntings for varying lengths of time, women had offspring to care for and gathered fruits, herbs, edible mushrooms, seashore species, as well as materials for living such as for building shelters and making clothes. That's why many thousands of years later, women were medical knowledge reservoirs, knowledge passed down the generations to daughters, and why in superstirious times women were labeled witches because the knowledge they has was scary to ignorant men.
    There are also signs that women may have returned to the seas, albeit shallow ones; where they gave birth, gathered the riches of the sea shore, and kept cool in heat. I personally think the two genders lived largely separate lives, with men returning with their kills, so feasting as long as it lasted, then would go off on the hunt again. It would be impractical for children and babies to be risked on long It might also explain why men always take control of bbqs and burning meat!
    So that would mean only men have ADHD, is that the case? I understood it was 'mostly males'. Then there is the fact that procreation would have mixed hunter genes with gatherer genes, so either all men would have ADHD, or evemryone would, it would be normal and we wouldn't be talking about it.
