M1916 Stahlhelm - German Helmet
World War One
For Germany, it’s early war helmet was the leather spike helmet called the pickelhaube which was expensive, offered little protection and was unsuitable for the trenches.
In 1916 the pickelhaube was replaced by the more practical steel helmet called the Stahlhelm. The Germans were the first to test a steel helmet but the slow to introduce it on the battlefield.

Probably one of the most badass helmets ever created
Javan Clarke i agree
Javan Clarke
Especially with the Stirnpanzer
i wouldn't call the head of a penis 'badass'
and for ww2 atleast the m1 pot was superior anyway.
Says the guy with a picture of fucking Harris.
Ikr, the Chinese army even received Stalhelms from Germany to have their soldiers equip them.
When the Irish Free State was created in the early 1920s, they chose the 1916 German helmet as the best choice. But when they tried to buy them from Germany, they found out that due to the treaty of Versailles, the Germans could not export war materials. So the Irish Government contacted Vickers in Great Britain, and they manufactured the helmets. So you had an English company making German helmets for the Irish.

Bahahaha
well the stahlhelm was amazing
way better than the brodie in my opinion
John Rodgers have a nice day
But they stopped using them in 1940
No wonder why all helmets look like the Stahlhelm today
Not exackly. American SWAT use helmet like hat
Also the spesnaz doesnt use that kind of helmet
No I think most armies today probably use helmets that are similar to the us ww2 helmets
form follows function.
I think what you mean is all modern helmets resemble...helmets.
Modern headgear is completely different, and they've had decades to work on them so you'd hope so

so you love penis then, because of this what they look like.
but yes your right, they were best design.....in ww1, by ww2 we had the superior M1 pot
Germany: "makes thing"
rest of the world: "thing"👌👀
The sexiest helmet during WWII.
not even the steel pot that was equipped by US soldiers eh?
U r sexy
quite literally since it looked the head of a penis.
Pink Guy ey boss!
Robert H. Goddard Then I suppose you don`t have a penis when you don`t know how an actual one looks like.
Bonus intel: The visor less helmets were originally thought to be designed by the Germans for religious reasons for the Ottoman soldiers to pray without removing their helmets, however this has been disputed. Instead the conversion, used by all central power factions was to improve vision and possibly hearing, and we can also see the German Freikorps wearing them post war. There are also images of troops wearing helmets backwards for the possible reason to improve visibility.
Actually the visor less helmets the ottomans used, were cut-down stahlhelms. Then Germany made the special visorless model for them, but the war ended before they could send them, so they ended being used by the german freikorps after the war, since they were un-used stock
Actually the Turkish helmets were different than the visorless helmets worn by the Freikorps.
Uhm, how does that differ from what I've said?
The ottomans used cut-down helmets, the germans made a special model for them, but the war ended before they could be sent, so they were used by the freikorps
Simple History glad to hear it was a *real* reason and not a stupid political one.

The Stahlhelm is my most favorite helmet design of all time! All the versions from 1916-1942 (Maybe 1945) are the best looking ones. The East German ones however look very goofy compared to the others.

General Gaede: Steel is stronger than leather. I'm a genius!

The ‘leather’ was only a cover for the Pickelhaube.
But what about a kilogram of feathers
The first steel helmet is the French M1915 Adrian, it was already in widespread use by October 1915 and the Champagne Offensive.

Just sold my M1916 shell. Had it since I was around 7 years old (I am now 54). It hurt to sell it, but times are tough, because I am disabled. It went to a good home, thankfully.
Ooo I love me some stalhems
The Pickelhaube was able to withstand saber cuts from horseback - it was a really good helmet only there was no purpose for it anymore as warfare shifted away from cavalry charges
I personally have around 7 Pickelhaube inherited from my late father I can't imagine how it could withstand saber cuts from horseback as it seems quite flimsy. I was expensive to manufacture and required continuous maintenance. It produced for another war...
@@paoloviti6156 obviously you could penetrate it. But most of the time, it would be strong enough to save your skull from being cut open
This channel is great, keep up the amazing work!
Correction to anyone looking at the video, the M17 Stalhelm has a metal liner band whereas the M16 has leather. The M18 has a metal liner band as well as the modern chinstrap. The Austro Hungarian helmet featured a more modern designed chinstrap, (similiar to that of an M18 however earlier) as well as having the chinstrap lugs in a different location.
Yeah and they also didn't seem to understand that only a small amount of M1918's had cutouts for the ears, as most still had the skirt.
Superb design and looked great, its so wonder so many of today's helmets evolved from it.
Always struck me how weird it is that this general practical design took so long for most of the rest of the world to adopt the design, covering the neck, ears, etc.
It's amazing how much thought was put into designing this helmet
I got a M1 helmet from the 40s with netting by far my favorite. But the Stahlhem comes in at a close second. The pop culture aside from its history makes it legendary.
*Picklehelm* P-p-pickle Ri-- *gets shot*
LordScrubMaker TheSecond *Pickelhaube, not Picklehaube
Josiah Rodela pickelsimer not picklesimer...my life
@J. R. Actually, there were two different helmets which had similar names, the first one being the Pickelhelm, the second, which is a Steel Helmet but German Soldiers never used them in battle I think, is the Pickelhaube, so check your eyes and get glasses
Amazon sells reproduction of the stalhelm for 59.99 to over $90 its a ripoff
What do you mean by ripoff? Is there cheaper ones?
I ment the price
I think it has a decent price because its made with steel and its a bit heavy, but I see it can be a little lowered down but its ok.
yea
I found one in forest
Interesting you mentioned there was a1918 variant of the German Stahlhelm helmet with ear cutouts for better hearing. A very dear friend of mine, Arthur Purcell, an American Veteran of the First World War, told me artillery shrapnel was the most dangerous thing faced by troops on both sides in the war. Being able to hear artillery rounds coming in was the most important sense you had to stay alive. The Brodie type helmet he was equipped with made hearing shells easy. Said he tried on several captured German helmets, and while they covered more, they also attenuated sound more, a distinct disadvantage.
I love your videos i wait every day for new video!
Funny thing is that modern helmets of today have a very similar shape of the Stahlhelm. Just look at modern Armies like US and take a close look at their helmets shape. It protects the whole head and neck still making sure your eyes arent covered.
A really important breakthrough (or comeback from medieval head protection) in modern warfare protection therefore, good choice of helmet to present ;)
Also I really like your channel in general keep it up i could watch your videos all day long :D
maybe the color but if you just look the shape of the stahlhelm and compare that to modern army helmets then you see what i meant take a close look at the front
true!

Hey. I was wondering if you could do a video on Napoleon Bonapart, if not done already.
-Wendy's- yes VIVA LA FRANCE! ☺
hello: 3 I would like to see the same video but speaking of the French helmet. Thanks ;3
I ordered one and i got it today!! It's super comfortable and it looks awesome!!
I was in English and on my teachers desk was a fucking stahlhelm. It had nothing to do with the lesson, but apparently it was a souvenir from one of her student’s grandfathers. I wasn’t expecting it but it was so fucking cool
Bulgarian army also wore this helmet during WWI
Do the andraine helmet used by french
Outside topic: the French helmet design is used for a lot of stuff nowadays such as firemen helmet, and the construction site helmet.
the m1917 also had the chinstrap lugs. it had a metal liner band as opposed to the earlier leather one. the m1918 did away with the chinstrap lugs. the double dip was another model of the m1918. the turks received several 10s of thousands of standard m1916s and some m1916s with the brim trimmed off all around the helmet. the visorless ones purported to be for turkey were never issued and are seen mostly with post ww1 friekorp armor units.
Can you do a video about the GDR military helmet? that would be awsome!
How come you kept on deleting it and re uploading it?

Please do an episode on the m1 helmet ,it’s evolution (from wartime design of front seem fix bale,to post war Vietnam), it I see an iconic bit of kit that’s been through most of the 20th century by American troops . Thanks for the great vids
Makes sense why the German support in bf1 wears that funky helmet... Great video as always... And also I love your books!!
Make the Yamato like if you agree
After ww1 stalhelm been used on ww2 like german n Chinese war
After WW2, these helmets were no longer worn by German army. Nowadays only white helmets were worn by some German firemen. Also Egyptians and Chileans wore such helmet for ceremony duties.
American army today wore similar helmets but very different from German helmets of the past two world wars.
Great, great video over a topic so very seldom discussed and known about. Thanks for taking the time to teach us something so rarely talked about! By the way, Stahlhelm (good pronunciation by the way!) translates to "steel helmet" in English.
I'm glad my pronunciation was correct! I try my best to get them as accurate as possible :-)
why would you reupload it 3 times, btw... Nice Video... love you guys...

oh, thx for the info m8
I have the m1918
This is the coolest military helmet design ever. It looks straight out of the medieval time.
It should be noted that the Stahlhelm design is similar to and considered by many to have influenced later combat helmets such as the American PASGT and MICH helmets, though these were made from kevlar instead of metal, giving them superior ballistic protection with less weight.

Still waiting for you to drop that album my mans.
My helmet is level 3a+ (will stop .44 mag, 00 buckshot, anything below AR or AK). It's shape is almost exactly like a 1916 stahlhelm. That was by choice :) Viper Batleskin, crammed full of Team Wendy. I love it! I always go with well proven designs.
For many years it seemed no one understood the purpose of the "Frankenstein" lugs on the sides of the helmet. I know I didn't, until decades ago I visited the War Museum in downtown Nashville (built to commemorate WWI) and saw a display of an M1916 helmet with the armored "brow plate" attached. But, since the growth of the Internet I've seen a number of people write that the purpose of those lugs was something else. I believe this video is only the second accurate description I know of.
Errors in the video m16 and m17 have the same chinstrap only the latter has a steel liner band. Most m18 helmets did not have the ear cut out but original ones cost thousands because they are very rare. The m18 is the only one with an improved chinstrap design. It makes me less likely to trust these videos with these errors, research must have been poor.
Cool!! I never knew!!
I'd also like to mention, The current US army (and other branches) standard issue helmet the Advanced Combat Helmet was inspired buy the Stenhelms design
Those helmets look badass
ya'll should do all the variants of the French Adrian helmet and the countries that made their own adaptations like the Italian and Belgium Adrians along with all the experimental French helmets like the dunad and the customization tankers made and the grill style face sheilds for shrapnel.

The ear cutouts on the m1918 probably only had the ear cutouts to save metal near the end of the war, it just had the side effect of giving the soldiers better hearing.
Yeah, only around 100.000 of them actually had the ear cutout
Infographics show VS SIMPLE HISTORY in Vikings: war of clans?I must be there!
I like the Stirnpanzer variant
Before this video I thought that the Pickelhaube was made of steel. Thanks for correcting my error!
There had been helmets made of steel, but they had been only used by some regiments of prussian, bavarian and saxon heavy cavallry , also by palace guards.
