Moscheles: Complete Piano Sonatas

- Ignaz Moscheles (1794-1870) was born in Prague. In 1808 he settled in Vienna where he was a pupil of Albrechtsberger and Salieri - thanks to whose commendations he became adjunct Kapellmeister to the Court Theatre from 1811 to 1813. Beethoven was so impressed by him that he entrusted him with the piano transcription of Fidelio. The approval of the genius of Bonn and the establishment of a friendship between them that would continue over time were pivotal in those years to launching the young musician into the stream of the international concert world.

Beethoven’s student, Mendelssohn’s teacher: new recordings of major works by a seminal figure of early musical Romanticism.
By 1814, when the publisher Artaria commissioned him to prepare a piano reduction of Beethoven’s Fidelio, Ignaz Moscheles was one of Vienna’s most popular pianists, and his career as a virtuoso had begun. A decade later he settled in London, having put the finishing touches on the teenage Mendelssohn’s formal instruction in Berlin the previous year; the two remained friends until the younger man’s death in 1847.
Moscheles’ composition has generally been viewed as a natural, not especially inspired adjunct to his considerable accomplishments as a performer and then teacher.
However, Schumann considered Moscheles one of the best sonata composers of his generation, and this valuable new recording gives proofpositive of Schumann’s claim. They were all written within the relatively condensed span of around three years: the Op. 22 Sonata dates from 1814, while the single-movement ‘Sonate mélancolique’ Op. 49 in the pathos-laden key of F-Sharp Minor was written the same year but only published in 1821. Also composed in Vienna in 1814, the three movements of the Op. 27 Sonata caracteristique centre around a Viennese popular song, Freut euch des Lebens, later immortalised in a waltz by Johann Strauss (and then quoted by Mahler in his Ninth Symphony).
Cast on the grandest scale in four movements, the Grande Sonate, Op. 41 in E Major, written in 1816, pays homage through its greater expressive and dramatic concentration to its dedicatee Beethoven. in Moscheles was capable of skilfully wrought musical structures, in which a Classical balance of thematic ideas is tempered with an early Romantic dynamism. Pathos in general, and chromaticism in particular, are not overplayed, and his music is never sentimental.
The winner of several piano competitions in his native Italy, Michele Bolla specialises in music of the Classical and early-Romantic period, working on both historical and modern instruments.

Wonderful!
When gems like these present themselves, I realize just how superficial my knowledge of musical history is. What a joy to be humbled.
Ignaz’s music is for me one musician that produced, for me, the greatest melodies of the classical-romantic period. The beauty, the amazing musical sensibility are elements that make him a composer with a level close to Chopin, for example. It is a pity that it has such a limited disclosure and its knowledge by the general public is extremely limited. Ignaz is an extraordinary composer for the fabulous and admirable harmony that he incorporates in his compositions that emotionally touches us deeply.
The pianist and his interpretation is admirable, both for the sensibility he conveys and for the cadence and technique he uses. Thanks for this magnificent recording that gives us unforgettable moments of pleasure.
Great composer. He was at Beethoven funeral. His music is absolutely pure classic-romantic style. Great!!
Moscheles was highly regarded in his time. He befriended Franz Liszt and Clara Schumann and many others. He was a modest and friendly person. He travelled all over Europe. One of the leading pianists and composers. His compositions nowadays are very rarely played.
Never heard of him but his works are lovely
If you like these pieces you'll probably like his third piano concerto : ua-cam.com/video/WmILM1ruuFE/v-deo.html ; if you like classical music, and if you don't yet know her, you should listen to Alma Deutscher violin concerto and piano concerto. They are marvellous !
Chopin was inspired majorly by Moscheles.
How have I never heard of Moscheles before? Thanks for uploading this!! It's great to hear work by lesser-known composers who deserve more attention.
🍇 squish squish
Worth checking out his Etudes
Dear Dylan Tanner if you like these pieces you'll probably like his third piano concerto : ua-cam.com/video/WmILM1ruuFE/v-deo.html ; if you like classical music, and if you don't yet know her, you should listen to Alma Deutscher violin concerto and piano concerto. They are marvellous !
Maravilous music, congratulations Brilliant Classics, for yourself present for us, your beautiful music! Thank you so MUCH!
This is lovely stuff. Thanks a lot. It's a tall order to find either producers or indie pianists who are willing to risk the record studio rental & production fees to record these Cinderfella composers hidden under the bushels of Beat & Hoven, Mendel's Sohn, Chop Inn...Great Liszt - ening
BTW, speaking of the lesser known Cinderfella composers: one of my all-time favourite piano Concertos happens to be Hummel's Nr2 in a-minor. Hummmmmmel, da man!
I'd heard of Moscheles before, but I'd never taken the time to listen. Thanks for this!

Wonderful. Delightful!
Moscheles,Ries,Hummel,Kalbrenner,Pleyel,I starting knowing about them when I was about fourteen years old, reading a biography on Chopin.Fifty years later I could listen their recorded compositions. Here is Moscheles.I highly recommend his piano concertos. They were not Cindirella composers, they belong to a transition period from classic to romantc period.
Gran bella proposta.Grazie per il bellissimo inserimento.
That fourth sonata really stood out. It's A pity we only have the first movement.
Meh, I thought the first two were pretty good. But yeah pretty much all of his Sonatas are nice to listen to on a sunny day
Actually, this sonata is complete : it was his intent to make a one-movement piano sonata.
Grazie !! Interessante !
I have never heard his name until I found this playlist in your channel! Thank you for bringing Moscheles up! His works are so beautiful. It is kind of unique that he had much more "18th-century classical" soul than Beethoven who was born 20 years earlier than him (and also was his teacher), but I can feel some of Beethoven's influence from his use of wide range and chromatic relationships.
Never heard of this composer before, so thank you for sharing.
Beautiful sounding fortepiano. I wish the description would include year/manufacturer of such fine instrument.
Bucholtz or Graf maybe
I really enjoyed this, thanks a lot, I didn’t know him.

I never heard this name, but in German this name sounds sorta fluffy, like his huge, curly sideburns.
His moscheles are so fluffy. :^3
All friendly jokes aside, I like what I hear. Refreshing and dynamic like Mozart. Thanks for sharing, Brilliant Classics!
Thanks 🎶🌟
His piano compositions, while not being particularly innovative (compared to Chopin or Liszt), was music that would have delighted the aristocracy throughout Vienna and in the popular soirees of Paris throughout the 19th century. While today this music is heard as quaint and antiquated, this would have been considered the modern "pop music" of the time.
Did not know him, great music.Thank you 🙏🙏🙏🙏my knowledge is limited I see now
Intrascendente.
Quite interesting. Contatulations. However, despite the autenticity, I would prefer this music played on a modern piano.
cool
Não conhecia este compositor, excelente . Obrigado
Are we listening to a period piano forte?
Maybe it's just me, but the themes of his etudes are by far in my opinion, more interesting and memorable, and the technical challenges seem to foreshadow those of Mendelssohn.
These sonatas however, may be ''cute'' (or trying to be charming), but sadly they pale in comparison to those by Dussek and Clementi, and especially Haydn, and even pale thematically from works by John Field.
Maybe, there's the reason why they have remained ''obscure'' all this time.
A new Jewish composer! Finally, I can add Moscheles to Schoenberg, Mahler and Glass. Thank you for this Brilliant Classics!
And Mendelssohn?
@@ruperttmls7985 And Mendelssohn. I momentarily got confused whether he was a composer or a philosopher - and realized there was two. :)
Don’t forget Shostakovich and Stravinsky haha
@@Viktorvelat95 And Mahler... XD
Add Allan to your list. Liszt said he was the only person he was scared to perform for.

What year is the piano?
🇹🇷😍🤗
I liked Op. 22, Op. 41 and Op. 49....but I really didn't like Op. 27.
1:14:00 was really awesome!
Tacheles.
Unfortunately I can't listen to it.. Perhaps it's me but so far I had no problem with the most of classicals.. But this for me has no concept it feels like badly connected parts copies of other musicians compositions.. Passed BTW thanks for posting..
I forgot, personally I like Clementi's sonatas better.
Crap.
