    Swelling and Scar Tissue After Knee Surgery.
    This is one of the biggest challenges for recovery.
    Swelling and scar tissue in the knee after knee surgery and total knee replacement is one of the biggest challenges for recovery and can ruin a good surgery if it goes unchecked.
    To avoid long-term problems with your knee you need to avoid swelling and scar tissue. Lisa Alarcon, Director of Physical Therapy, explains the impact of swelling and scar tissue as related to total knee arthroplasty: knee replacement surgery. Lisa has had thousands of her clients at Michigan Community VNA on the X10 Knee Recovery System. They use this new knee recovery technology for all of their total knee replacement patients.
    If you lose the battle against swelling and scar tissue you will face limited motion for the rest of your life. In many cases, those with poor range of motion go through another procedure a 1-2 months after surgery called a MUA (Manipulation Under Anesthesia) which breaks through the scar tissue. These patients then have to start their PT from the beginning.

    This is one of the most detailed and useful explanations of scar tissue I have ever seen. For anyone considering knee replacement (or other knee surgeries) this might be the best 10 minutes you spend getting ready.

    There are a lot of videos about knee replacement on the internet... on UA-cam. We are so proud of this one - it has helped thousands of people understand what is going on during the recovery process. Lisa Alarcon does such a great job here - so grateful for her assistance in spreading the word about this crucial subject. Watch every minute - is worth the trip.

      I agree, great job explaining the challenges. I was rear ended on my motorcycle and had a completed degloving from the knee to my hip. Because of this, I have more factors impacting my range of motion. It's painful, but you have to keep pushing! Awesome video, wish I had access to this machine.

    I just checked in to using the x10 , they don’t have a contract with my insurance ( anthem blue cross ) my cost delivery and set up - technician ( 900$ - rental 100$ per day - minimum three weeks rental ) . I’m 8 weeks out from total knee replacement- stuck at 105 degrees max the last 2 to 3 weeks, therapy 2 times a week, lots of swelling. Getting ready for scar tissue removal and ablation. 3 grand out of pocket is just out of the question right now, too bad I can see the benefits of using it.

    I had a TKR about 7 weeks ago, I could get 90 degress flexion after 2 to 3 weeks, I was lucky but also very determined to avoid scar tissue. I've since progressed to about 110 degrees but despite exercises and pushing the pain barrier, my knee doesn't seem to want to flex past the 110 mark. I'm trying to beat that but there's been no improvement for weeks. If I really push it at the gym with leg extensions and leg curls, leg presses etc, it blows up like a balloon. Any ideas or comparisons are very welcome, but I'll keep trying meanwhile.

    Had both knees and a shoulder replaced in a 6 month period. It’s been 14 months since the first knee was done and it is painful and doesn’t bend well. The other is great as is the shoulder, no problem. I don’t understand why the 1 st knee is like this. When sitting in a chair the knee goes numb with pressure on the back of my leg, feels unstable . I walk 2 miles a day and ride my bike 2 miles a day too. Leg just feels heavy and hurts from the knee to the hip. Feels tight across the top of the knee, and has a little knot on o e side.

    Great video, but all this contradicts what I've been told from my surgeon with regards to a bucket handle tear of the meniscus post op. 9 sutures to fix my knee, ice, elevation, no bending for 4 weeks minimum. Knee joint has limited blood flow, so clotting is encouraged for as long as possible around the repair to ensure it heals correctly. In Germany for the same operation Dr will actually place the knee in a cast for 6 weeks! I am 4 weeks post op about to start physio therapy, I feel for everyone who goes through this it's extremely debilitating and alot of patience required, 8 myself have become a zombie, can't wait to get moving again!

      Blood vessels and nerves can be damaged during surgery from tourniquets they put on while operating causing pain for up to a year as they regenerate/heal. Also some people form an overabundance of scar tissue which inhibits the knee movement, creates unstable knee and causes pain. Xrays do not show this. This happened to me. A few months later my surgeon took me back to OR to manipulate knee under anesthesia and scope knee to see cause of ongoing knee issues. He found scar tissue "the size of a baseball" on my knee and removed it. Then manipulated knee to break up adhesions. It made a huge difference in my recovery.
      Sounds like you need to go back in and insist on some answers. Good luck.

      @TheCoregon 4 роки тому +5

      So sorry..total knee is a super hard recovery. Sorry to tell you but 8 weeks is just the beginning..so what you are experiencing is normal and will be for awhile. My surgeon said I wouldn't be thanking him for 8 months because it's a rough recovery. He was right..but it was well over a year before it felt halfway normal. Especially getting up from chair.... toilet or out of car. The hardest part is when someone tells you they were up and back to normal a month later. Ignore these stories..they have usually forgotten how bad it really was..and don't compare yourself to others. Everyone heals differently. It drove me crazy and was so frustrating when people told me they knew someone that recovered much faster than me..or with less pain. They need to show compassion-- not make your healing a competition...or doubt your pain. Keep icing..I did it nightly for 20 minutes for a year. A nurse told me that many people stop ice too soon. The good news is I have ZERO knee pain now. It's worth it....hang in there.God bless
