Great example in how old ideas repackaged nicely might do well. They need to do two things to make this stand apart besides in presentation.
They need a strong but completely non-cheating AI. The stronger it is and the less you see them march units out in the open like that the better. Difficulty should reside in how quickly they can build up prestige points and if there's any AI-cheats otherwise (like die modifiers or lack of fog of war) only at the highest levels.
Second, they really need to lean into the army content. Make sure they add the Italians, Russians, Poles, French, Japanese, Canadian, Australian, Romanians, Chinese, Indians, and more. They should also do some kind of packaging of the armies by year, early war equipment was quite different than late war equipment. Have a free form mode, sure, but put also put some character into the choices and say have an option for something like 1941 Germans VS 1941 Russians feel different than 1944 Germans VS 1944 Russians. They don't have to go full Eugen-mode here but it's a good roll model nonetheless in how it can make this more interesting.
