Im 1969 I was a sophomore in high school. I was going to school, working two jobs, and had bought a Yamaha 100 CC Trail bike to get around. I was deeply into the music of those days and learning to play the guitar. I had put behind me the things that I had loved as a child. My model building, middle school model rockets, my bicycle, etc. BUT, I never gave up my comics. I still have a couple thousand of them. And now I'm 71, (I graduated high school in 1971.), but I still enjoy watching your videos and from time to time, I'll break out a hand full of them to read and take me back to those magical times so many years ago. Thank you Fred for doing what you do. I can tell you, like me, gave never lost the love of those incredible books. In these tumultuous times, its still a great escape.

I enjoyed your comment, rundoetx. We are of like minds when it comes to comics. But I didn't grow up as fast as you. I'm only a year younger, but the most I could manage in 1969 was a minibike and a paper route. However, I did give up comics in 1988 and I have regretted it ever since. I've bought back as many as I could through the years in much lower grades than before. Not numbering in the thousands, though. I assume you have your original comics. That must be sweet! I have one originally-owned comic from the '60s. It's Avengers Annual 1, with my name written large on the first page.

@FredFlix Yes, most are my original comics, but I have sold off most of the higher priced comics. I would buy the hardback versions of the Marvel Collectors Classics to still be able to go back and relish those earliest issues. It's time, though, I think to start parting with the rest and many of my original record albums. My kids (both married with kids) dont want em, lol. Different times for sure.

@rundortx - In the words of Dr. Zachery Smith: "Oh, the pain. The PAIN." Show them how much they're worth and it might change their attitude.

Jack never lacked detail, and his backgrounds were as dynamic as the main characters. Imagine the work he put into each panel that could be quickly read over by the reader.

I tell you, when Doom zapped Hauptmann I was like, "YEAH, blast him Dr. Doom!" Only Jack could have made it work. Well, time for bed. Got jury duty in the morning. Thanks Fred!

Geez, Fred. You had me worried that you had abandoned us over here in the Kirbyverse. It seems like forever since we were able to feast ourselves on some meaty Kirby morsels. Glad to see the King back on UA-cam. I have to agree, F.F. wasn't knocking out any spectacular stories, but when the Standard is as high as it had been, there's really only one way to go. There was a slight change in the way Jack drew the Thing in his facial dimensions and in the way the muscles and hands and feet had been pushed to Kirby's stylistic extremes. Harder edges and ever more thrusting explosive action. At least as inked by Joe. Vinci's lighter penwork and occasionally feathery lines may arguably been a bit more subtle at this point. But MAN! That full-pager of Room's profile with his mouth agape, now that's some primo Kirby. Amazing how his assumably metal mask could contort to such a complete range of emotions. From rage to quietly pensive. There should have been some scientific jibba-jabba explanation given for it's ability to do that. But then again, Victor Von Doom genius was far above the mind of a second rate mind like Reed Richards. If it weren't for those 'Cosmic rays' Richards would have been left to the pages of obscurity. A footnote at best. DOOM rules Supreme!

I see the mind of Tony Santiago is amazing as well. So would Reed be nothing without Von Doom? I tend to think they created each other...or at least the versions both turned out to be.

Great video, as always! Never get tired of Kirby's full-panel Dr. Doom Faceplates! My personal opinion: instances like the Dr, Room fight ending abruptly and the increased number of splash-page art for no apparent reason were signs of Kirby being weary of his situation and preparing to leave Marvel, which we know he did. It's been over a decade since I reread that Thor #164; I'd forgotten how he whipped Pluto's ass.

I am confident that Jack's work influenced some in the Hollywood community. Knowing that Dr. Doom arrived decades before Darth Vader did is evident in that. I always thought Aliens was a take on Jack's Annihlus.

Never put Annihilus an Alien together before, Jay. Intriguing. (KC)

I am not so sure that the Balder splash page was a waste of space, it gives a beat in the rhythm between all the tighter action panels and a cinematic big close up, bringing you into the invidual and their emotions before the wider battle scenes.

Darth Vader is basically “What If Spider-Man became Doctor Doom?”
