The King was doing masterpieces in the middle of a golden age.

Great video KC. I loved the soundtrack - a spooky choice. Two classic story arcs that define the characteristics of its creators. Only Jack could ever achieve an inter-"galactic" story involving planets battling entities of the universe with a God in the middle while also do an earth bound FF story that truly defines the evil persona their arch-enemy really is. In one month. The King's imagination is what makes these stories so visually beautiful.

Thanks Jay. It was so amazing to see this stuff play out as Stan and Jack were ushering in comics as a serious art form.

Sheer POWER!!! Those opening pages of Thor 161 are jam packed! Jack's collage work is perfectly integrated here. But man!the drama leaps out at us right from the beginning. What source did you use? The colors are absolutely Vibrant. Again, it's a shame that the colorist didn't receive a credit. Brilliant work here. Perhaps the term 'embellishment' indicated more than one function was assigned to the inker. Oh...Flo...? Despite any dissentors Mr. Colletta has, he came through on this issue. The colours are Asguardian Glorious! The MCU has never captured any visual image as Powerful as the thumbnail you used. Even with Dr. Doom (the exception being that Doom&his Doombots iconic splash page) and with Joe doing his always competent inks, Thor outshone the F.F. that month. Nice choice on that '68 soundtrack. And, ah...Peggy Lipton. The era of the long, straight blonde hair crush. Marsha was but a year away. Or was it two? There was inevitability at least one girl in your class or walking the hallways who had that look. How sweet it was. Thanks for another trip down Memory Lane, Fred.

Peggy was extremely photogenic. More so with still shots than film. And Marsha was indeed one year away. So thank you again, Tony, for another thoughtful comment. The source for #161 is the original comic. So those colors were the way it truly was for comic readers back then. Just fantastic. And I thought Stan's dialog for Galactus was perhaps his finest. I'm currently watching, again, Peter Jackson's "Get Back" documentary, originally filmed a year after this. Lennon & McCartney...Lee and Kirby. Industry kings at the height of their powers. And yet their reigns were starting to come to an end, simultaneously. Triumph and tragedy.

@kirbycontinuum5700 - I meant to ask were your prints from a higher quality Art book quality reproduction. The quality of the high gloss paper gives the best, crispest, image. Even the graphic novel paperbacks aren't as sharp. Those hundred dollar oversized collections are so costly becuz: "Ya gets what ya pays for." That's what I was asking as to source. Our original comics, being printed on disposable newsprint softened the colors quite a bit. But we were able to buy those with our soda bottle refund money. And HA!HA! They're worth more than the compilation reprints. There is a marked difference between the color and image reproduction in the Thor and F.F. issues you used here. Thanks, Fred.

@@tonysantiago255 Now that I look again, the Thor source may be a finer art book as you say. I received them as DVD-Rom files years ago, and while most were scanned from the original comics, that might not be true in this case.

@Fredflix - Thanks for the follow-up, Fred. And I just read through these comments again. Your observation about the Lennon &McCartney and Lee&Kirby split-ups is very much on point. Both monumentally successful (Triumphant) and equally Tragic in the way that the relationships/working creative partnerships fell apart. The end of the 60s was the close of a period of innocence in many ways. Technology has increased, but Creativity has diminished in my opinion. Camelot was an apt metaphor.

As usual, very nice presentation! Always enjoyed seeing Kirby's art plastered over his b/w photo-backgrounds. That FF Doc Doom story arc was arguably Kirby's LAST great FF arc. (I know he has the Torgo/Skrulls arc coming up, but that one seemed pretty pedestrian compared to all that came before it. Great video!

OH MY OH MY!!!! I never did get a copy of that Thor (smh), but I wish I had. That splash page of Thor and the Recorder is beyond epic! Ego was such scum. What he did to the Wanderers (more smh). But I did get the FF #84. That was the first Doom storyline I ever read (actually getting the Marvel's Greatest Comics reprints first). Some other artists did really fine work using Doom in their stories (Steranko and Bob Layton in Iron Man come to mind), but no one could do Doom better than Kirby! I still have a lithograph print of Doom by Kirby, that I bought just before Jack died (along with an FF one). Both signed by Kirby limited to 150 each. Things being tough financially, it looks as though I will have to sell them. It will break my heart regardless of how much I get for them. Thankfully I am not yet senile so I have both in files to look back on in my head. Thanks for another wonderful episode of Comic-Rack Jack, Fred!

You're welcome, Doug. Sorry you might have to sell those prints, though.
