Saw this originally in 94, i love Larry Coryell's playing but i had never seen anything like Bireli's solo it blew me away and got me into Jazz in a big way, his comping is cool too!
I have to confess to never much enjoying Larry Coryell ever since buying Lady Coryell back in the 60s, but this is wonderful and of course Birelli can do no wrong for me. What a cooking trio!
Like, dang! I was lucky enough to see each of these guitarists live, Coryell in the mid seventies, Bireli in a small club in California in the mid eighties.
For those jazz guitar fans that do dig the OLD school....someone just posted Stan Getz---Parker 51.....a 24 year-old Jmmy Raney SHREDS the cherokee changes..CHECK IT OUT!!!
@wakanabeotai--they are both GREAT!!!Bereli is doing Benson type phrasing...Larry's doing Tal Farlow type Phrasing...nice contrast...Both are BURNING!!
@leoosiku Thanks for your comments. I have other albums- I bought Lofty Fake Anagram back in the 60s and that is what made me buy Lady Coryell. Much later I bought three that were bundled together. One I quite enjoyed- Live from Bahia- the other two not at all. Pleasure at listening to jazz players is a very personal thing and generally I try and avoid the sort of slagging matches that crop up on youtube. I'd rather leave it that I enjoy Larry's playing on this clip. It's very good.
@wakanabeotai --maybe you don't dig Tal Farlow or Jimmy Raney....Larry is doing almost perfect interpretation of that classic style....technical problems??I don't think you comprehend this jazz guitar style
I understand the two guys with axes but that third guy didn't seem to be able to saw through that log no matter how he tried. These guys really put on a show !
Not many players can hold their own with a fiery player such as Bireli but veteran ace Coryell shows the younger Bireli here how it's done. Has anyone heard Bireli lately? Good lord he developed into the most amazing player in Jazz today. He makes Metheny look like an amateur the level he is playing at now into his forties!
How do I tell if they make any mistake? Well, I attended a Birelli's concert a few years ago (acoustic) and after 30 minutes ot this speedy blazing, my broher and I had the same opinion: would be nicer if they would play a song, something recognizable. I left after one hour, ater I have heard all the notes possible on earth, and some.
@wakanabeotai Technical problems- are you serious. if you are not personally into jazz why make a statement that would require you to have some knowledge.
Page is virtuoso rock guitarist... you are off base with your comparison. These are Jazz guitarists no fuzz and no effects units. Totally different musical idiom. You sound like a giddy teenager. While we're at it is Page better than George Benson ,Mike Stern and John McLaughlin too?
Yes JPage is a "virtuoso" on the highest order. I saw him using the German grip live and he is awesome. "Stairway to Heaven" #1 hard rock band ever in my opinion. Hendrix is the best hard rock guitarist ever in my opinion My opinion... Friends?
@wakanabeotai where to start with you. A pianist would rather listen to birelli than tal- quit worrying about great players and go practice. Sweeping staements just show your age.
Larry's solo was way better, sounded like bireli was playing non-sense, tone sucked, phrasing was nil, larry is a real monster, each line was crafted. :)
i hear larry being limited by the tempo. one of bireli's most amazing qualities is how he can places 8th notes right in the pocket at any tempo, playing pretty much any line
Bireli is the man and will be for long time

One of the best bass solo ever! And I play guitar

This. No words. Back to practicing.
Shai Rosenfeld: no mistakes. Etc....
So great!! Thank you for posting.

Love it!
Thxs Kapitan maravilloso.
What a pair of monsters =P
Loved the Sailors Hornpipe quote at 2:20
Larry kills.

Great playing : ))
Bireli always makes something happen that you don't expect...I like that me...lol
Yeah! Tear it up!

Bireli makes other awesome guitar players look pedestrian.
@oldsyphilitic Did you buy all his straight ahead albums? I think you would enjoy them. There are upwards of 12 of them.

hmmm....
@leoosiku lol okay man. I'll do that.
Oleo's a hard tune though. And he definitely drops the head.

Bireli is just awesome period, everything he does. He was created to do this.

No safety net for these dudes
@wakanabeotai Technical problems- are you serious. if you are not personally into jazz why make a statement that would require you to have some knowledge.
Coryell and Bireli are two monsters, no doubt about it whatsoever... but Pege blows them both away with the bowed solo. German grip too. :)
Page is virtuoso rock guitarist... you are off base with your comparison.

Sorry, Pete, I was just being facetiously amusing. But Page does have a nice German grip, no? :)

Friends?
PeterC12853 You're confused, Eugene is talking about Aladar Pege the bassist.
I stand corrected if that is indeed the case.

Erg Larry kinda drops the head there. Embarassing

Sure. Governments tax office is in the pocket, of yours.
