Hey Artist, Do You Rush Getting To Done?

  • Do you find yourself impatient with the process and wanting to just declare 'this painting is done' even though you don't love it yet? Well, you're not alone! Many of us fall into this trap, finding ourselves restless and impatiently asking, "Is this done? How do I know when it's done?"
What is you could know when it's done because you had done the work of describing to yourself what 'done' feels like? When you create something that you love, just the way it is right now, how does that feel?
This is a great exercise for anyone wanting to escape external confirmation or formulas to know when their painting is done. You're the authority--only you know when that creation is done and you know because you know what 'done' feels like.

Thank you for saying that. I struggle with the finishing process and nearly always feel like my paintings are unfinished but I end up happy with them as they are. You just gave me permission to accept that 😊

I understand the "never done" piece! I combine both realism on the main subject (animal/person), with the techniques that I learned in your floral class on the background. I usually give my work away, just because I always want to fiddle with them because they are never done.

Haha, yes, I relate to that! If they remain with me, they are always free game for changes. 😀

Thank you Marabeth! For me it is helpful to take a picture of my art. It looks different through the eyes of the camera. It also helps to give away my art. To give something away is beautiful but sometimes painful too.

I agree about the picture taking-also flipping it in the editing program really helps. And I’m with you, I love to give away paintings sometimes.

hum, same for me, lots of my paintings are on a "waiting mode" hanging on my wall until I feel like it's time to continue it, I was recently wondering if I should push myself finishing those as I do not have lots of experience but your video just confirmed that I should wait as you said so poetically "wait that it speaks to me". I am always disappointing when I finsh a painting so I hang it for couple days, and little by little start loving it. Since our art is part of our soul maybe it's a way of taking the time to love ourself... You are the first artist I heard doing the same process as I do and it's warming up my heart.❤ Thank you for sharing.❤❤❤
