  • Home teaching isn't always easy, but someone has to do it! This summer, we took it upon ourselves to home teach John Dehlin, creator of Mormon Stories. Here's some footage of that.

As someone who attends a YSA branch, I can say that the home teaching program is a total scam. I personally haven't been home taught for months and the irony of it is that my home teacher is the elder quorum president. I personally hate home teaching cuz that's the only time I talk with the person or persons being home taught.

The perplexing thing to me about the LDS Church in spite of discoveries of late pointing to many weaknesses and inauthentic claims, the Church keeps an open door through revelatory possibility between deity and Mankind. The issue boils down to what paths people decide to navigate to find their way back to God. The LDS Church is only one of them among others that historically and in the present-day make extraordinary claims and has exhibited questionable behaviors among its founders. In spite of it all, the LDS Church has provided among other religions a welcoming pathway for many to fallow back to God. So, as it goes for most, people have to use their mind's God-given ability to decide for themselves the nature of the paths they choose to follow. Right or wrong, the experience of life itself, if keenly realized, provides the best directives for all of us.

Yeah, that's actually a true one for me. I always promised myself (and we promised each other, back when I was married and thinking I'd have children) that I'd / we'd _never, ever, ever_ own a minivan *under any circumstances* . It's always amusing to me seeing families with a giant minivan for a mere one or two kids (families who don't plan on having more, anyway). They always have those goofy stickers on the back showing mom, dad, each child, each pet... And if it's a BMW (big Mormon wagon, as we called them here), it typically has a CTR sticker or _something_ to let everyone know "Yes! I'm a Mormon too!" (A lot bigger deal in Portland, where most people sensibly are irreligious, unless you consider high quality beer & coffee religion). Though where I grew up in western Washington county suburban Portland, we had intel and Nike, both of whom recruited directly from BYU graduation ceremonies so there are a LOT of Mormons out there. They just stay out of Portland.
So yeah, I'm judgmental about minivan owners. It screams "I gave up! I'm a middle-aged parent who thinks minivans are safer, more sensible, and I somehow need enough space to haul a football team (or seminary class) if the time comes!" Usually accompanied by Old Navy dad jeans, tacky children's music on the car stereo, and requisite judgment on all things secular and cool about living in Portland.
You must discern between van styles though - standard "mini" vans, or _real_ BMW's - those passenger vans that the big families buy that haul 14 full-sized adults AND all their junk! Not a good look for the 16-year-old who's just started dating and borrows mom's car.

For the last while I have been subjected to the most lugubrious/morose attitudes from my true believing neighbors, often prefaced with the self righteous warning..."we don't make light of sacred topics/things/issues! Home teaching got really tough when we were told to report problems we found to the bishop, which I did. What a brainwashed idiot I was . I wish I could take it back . The couple looked very upset with each other , bad vibe, knew they were about to get divorced, I feel like they trusted me and I thought I was the only one who saw it coming , weird . I did mean well as a TBM. Anyway, the bishop wasted not second calling them. Then the husband confronted me, he was okay with me, their marriage was over already.

This is so sad, it sounds like this type of activity is just a way to spy on others, similarly to at BYU, it's required to report bad behavior of other fellow students :( It's as if the Mormon church doesn't understand the concept of privacy? In the end, why does the Mormon church think all acts are to be reported on, if their god knows everything everyone does?
