    They look great! For those of us that make our own templates, can you go over how you make a template? Like the distance from your stitch line to edge and how much room you allow? Also how you set your tooling windows.

    Genuinely confused - why don't you cut the tooling window out in your template piece?

    • @DonGonzalesMaker
      @DonGonzalesMaker  4 роки тому

      I prefer to make a leather tap off of it... you can actually make tap offs with a floral pattern carved into it as well so when you tap it off it will transfer the floral pattern as well. Saves time. It you could definitely make a template with the window cut out.

    Been a leather worker for a long time and I see a lot of UA-cam craftsmen tooling leather. Most of them do it incorrectly which makes me cringe. It sure is a pleasure watching you tool leather the way it should be done. Thank you for upholding the integrity of our art.

      @@ItsJustJerFromJersey much like welding or plumbing or electrical work leather working was a trade skill. There are correct techniques for complicated work. Today it's more of a hobby and I agree if it works for a hobbyist then stick with it.

      @@MrStudzdog the point is not that it won't work, but that it will make the next stage more difficult, time consuming and awkward!
      I know this from bitter self experience!
      I was going To take an apprenticeship with my Dad and learn from his experience!
      He died when I was 12, so it didn't happen! I still learned, but it took me a hell of a lot more give and frustration!
      I learned leatherwork the same way when I used to do quivermaking!
      It's not that it is just wrong, but it is wrong for a very good reason!

    Why do you use dye over edge paint? Just have it around?
    Edge paint has less chance of bleeding (which I have found happens alot when dyeing veg tan edges).

    Welp, I'm not sure what a "buck stitch needle" is, but my main gig is whip making (kangaroo leather, so I make and use a LOTTA lace), and I use Perma Lok needles--the back end is threaded (female), and you just screw it onto the point of your lace good and tight. I've only RARELY had a problem with them coming off, they just don't, and oh my GAWD are they a time saver!

    WOW!!!! Greetings from Ossett, West Yorkshire, England. (Red underline on the Ossett, the only place in the world named Ossett). A fantastic tutorial by someone highly intelligent and very skilled, thee best presented, informative, clear and concise tutorial on You Tube I have ever watched. Well done, man you should be a teacher, you have a gift that needs showing to the future leather workers of the world early in school, even the music is not over powering, gentle without interfering with your concise explanation of the process. 2.8K likes and not one dislike, just amazing. Thank you for that. Don, if you don't mind me using your first name (or Mr Gonzales if you prefer). I feel privileged to have been allowed the experience of watching the best tutorial ever. Many thanks from me, Chris, proudly from Ossett, England, the only one in the world, did I mention that once before?????

    I have the pattern pack for this build and made a couple of sheaths for a case trapper knife. The sheath has a really tight fit, tight enough my knife is getting stuck in the sheath. My stitch line is about 1/8 of an inch from the tooling window. Is that enough room?

    Can I ask, on curved surfaces, should you tool the flat piece then wet mould it, or wet mould to shape then tool. I find that sometimes the tooled pattern gets distorted or looses definition if I wet mould after tooling. Thank you
