Love the video! My husband wanted a puffy recliner for the living room. He went on and on about this recliner he had in the 90’s and how much he loved it and wanted to find the exact same one. I was mortified but quickly realized he gives me COMPLETELY free reign to decorate the entirety of the house. He loves my choices, compliments them with a smile so the man got his ugly, puffy, yet comfy, recliner. I purchased the exact recliner he wanted but had it made in a fabulous, neutral, fabric. I throw the most chic blanket and pillow on it. It hides it well enough and my wonderful husband gets to enjoy his chair. 😊
Now that's how to do it! I did the same, my husband is fine with me decorating the entire house my way. All he wanted was a recliner that fit his nearly 7' frame. We bought him the The Beast. It's hideous but makes him so happy. The monster chair has become a bit of a conversation piece and pic opportunity. My smaller women friends love to sit in it and laugh.

I can not take my black out curtains down in my living room. My husband works 3rd shift and can only sleep in his recliner. We are empty nesters so no kids but the curtains can be pulled back. He likes them that way when he is awake. We live in a community and close to the train tracks. Our house is well insulated and with the curtains he doesn’t hear the train. I’m in the back of the house and I never hear the train. We live in West Tennessee and you know it gets hot down here. We have a canopy of trees and a well tuned A/C heating unit. The black out linings keep it cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Our all inclusive utility bill never gets over $230 for a 3 bedroom house.
I love our leather recliner - not the puffy one with cupholders, but a beautiful caramel color brown. I was kind of surprised when you said they were out of style and make your home look old?
We have a leather sofa with rounded arms and matching chair in a beautiful, rich brown color with a hint of red -- matches the mahogany inlays in the entertainment cabinet perfectly. LOL. It was extremely expensive in 2005, still in brand new condition -- I don't find it creepy at all. The square arms on newer sofas look cheap to me, as though they're made of plywood.
I like recliners. I like the old style. I detest modern. I like curtains, so any creepy peeping toms wantabe will be deterred. I don't like black and white and modern so apparently this ain't the channel for me.
Maybe when Valentina or someone she loves, has aches and pains that are melted away by sliding into a comfy recliner she will change her mind about them. Not sure what the point is in having all the money in the world to redecorate ad nauseum to ‘update’ the look and be left with a room that one cannot relax and feel comfortable in. Need to strike a healthy balance imo.
Agree with you on all this .. specifically can’t tolerate valances of any kind , second the big puffy Michelin man recliners (sofas) are a No go. Had to add undersized Artwork
Isn't there quite an issue with the upkeep on curtains? I was recently considering roman shades; but there's the same issue with keeping them clean (and I have cats and one cat sheds like nothing I have seen before -- he's a professional shedder and his hair is embedded in everything).
I just vacuum my curtains when I vacuum my floors. I only have 3 windows in my apartment so it takes like 5 minutes lol. We can’t get rid of our ugly blinds so we keep them tucked up and hidden behind the lovely curtains (sheers + regular). Roman shades are also pretty, I assume you’d wipe them if they’re wood? Idk how you’d clean them if they’re fabric, maybe vacuum? Wash? Edit: I think the problem with blinds is most people actually use them and even keep them visible (just opened) when not in use. They’re also unnecessary if you can get curtains instead (or shades, or even prettier wooden blinds).
We live in the Westetn Colorado desert so it is very impractical not to have ceiling fans in certain rooms. Instead, I am changing over my ugly ceiling fans with wood and giant lights to very sleek, white fans with small wall hugging lights (because my husband loves top lighting) and this helps to deminish the impact on the room. They are not very noticeable when they are the same color as the rest of the ceiling. I think that sometimes a ceiling fan is needed to move air and cool the room, so totally get rid of them isn’t always practical. That said, we are going to replace the fan in our vaulted foyer with a chandelier because that fan really serves no purpose.
I absolutely love my ceiling fans. When menopause hits you want fans from every angle like a hurricane going on. My fan stays. My heavy curtains stay. My country-SouthernLiving style stays.
@@thevictorianedge5465 Absolutely agree about the fans. I'm going through menopause in Texas. We were still having 90-degree weather in October. The high temps are bad enough. Throw in menopause and, whew, don't know what I'd do without that cool air from the ceiling.
I have 8 ft ceilings. So I bought 96 inch pottery barn linen blend drapes and installed them next to the ceiling. It does make the room seem taller. I bought new pottery barn linen blend drapes thru EBay at half the price. They look great.
Wow! Valentino you used a word I haven’t heard in a loooong time! RUMPUS ROOM! “Kids go to the rumpus room NOW! Do people actually know how to Rumpus anymore?? Thanks for the flashback!😊Enjoy your Sunday!💕
When we moved into our renovated new home my husband insisted on a recliner so I made sure it was a stylish Italian brand which cost the earth but it looks good.
You're terrific! Loved this video. Right on! Thankfully I am on the right track...except I can't part with my cherry wood ethan allen pieces. But you are right....they are not making it anymore because people aren't wanting it. Oh well...have enough black and white pieces to blend in. Love your humor and enthusiasm!!!
I’m a 60+ woman and love my recliner because it loves my aching back. What are the best alternatives for me. I’m going to be redoing my upper level and throwing out most things.
@@despinakyraleos2234 If I were planning a remodel of an area where I’m demo’ing the whole space, sure I’d redo them, but I’m not going to do them just to redo them. I removed them in my garage because the weather fluctuations caused them to flake, but it was pricey. The whole house would be thousands and thousands of dollars. And they take a lot of time and effort to remove on your own.
Would you share with us the size and location of your house and the amount you paid to have them removed? I had friends that retired in their 60's and it's one of the first projects they tackled (in their 2,500 2 level home).
@@bugsbunny2357 Gosh, it was 3 or 4 years ago. It was a 3 car garage and I want to say it was $1500 in the Portland Metro area. So the whole house (4533sqft) would have been about 8-10k? That didn’t include painting it, just removing the ceiling texture.
@@vanessabogaert2104 Thanks for the info Vanessa as I had no idea and I am thinking of downsizing. So, it's good to know. 4,533 is a humongous house so it probably would have cost 10k for sure. I imagine it's a lot of work and clean up and protecting stuff, etc. Apparently you just spray water on it and scrape it off. But, it sounds about as fun as removing wallpaper.
An unusual tip for the Frame TV… I put one in my bedroom but not in my den (yet). It keeps my bedroom feeling calm and luxe and I didn’t have to put any kind of media furniture to accommodate it. Since most people expect to see TVs in a den, it’s easier to work it into a cohesive look. I’ll eventually put one in my den too, but I think it was more bang for my buck in my bedroom.
I agree with everything you have said here (#truthbombs); however, I need my bedroom ceiling fan - this is the best way to counter the hot flashes and the lack of a breeze on humid summer nights.
I love you guys Valentina. I also love the subject matter of all things interior design. However, it does not take into account things like functionality and maintenance. We do not all get massive discounting when purchasing and we pay full retail for everything. We also have to live in our spaces and a lot of us have ongoing damage caused by animals that roam throughout our houses with their fur and claws.
I had those old cherry orange cabinets! I hated them and buying new ones would have costs thousands, so I painted them and installed new hardware. It looks like a totally different kitchen and I love it 😂
Hi Valentina! We live in Florida and my husband won’t give up ceiling fan 😢 …any suggestions? What about making a video about this? How to chose a decent fan and how to match lighting?
I like the look of just a panel on the window. But what about when it gets below 30 or even -30 where I live? Air drifts in even though I have new, secure windows. Help please
The issue I feel is not antiques or curtains that makes a room feel old ,but poor quality furniture ( avoid IKEA at all cost!) , clutter , over accessorizing, and the most important neglecting your interior. Invest in quality pieces if you can they will always look good whatever the latest trend.
I like IKEA actually. But you have to be picky about what you purchase from them. I’m happy with th birch sideboard I bought for my tv in the family room. It upgraded the room for sure even though it was from IKEA. And actually, the piece I bought was recommended by Valentina I think this past summer.
Agreed! I can spot a cheap 2013 ikea Pinterest remodel from a mile away, so much more dated and sad than nice antiques. Although I agree w Valentina that it’s not my preference to have a themed house with ALL old furniture from the same era, it’s better to mix and match old pieces w character with updated more minimal pieces. My mom is a retired interior designer and her house is lovely with quality pieces but it’s all early 2000’s Tuscan style!! I’ve been goading her to mix in some different styles (French country, warm neutral minimal, etc), replace some of the Pottery Barn style matching sets with more actual vintage pieces, and to minimize her clutter. It looks a lot fresher now than before I started doing that.
What kind of lighting do you recommend for the bedroom? I have bedside lamps, but what about when I’m hanging out in my room and it’s not bedtime? (I don’t know what to replace the ceiling fan with haha or if it needs replacing at all). I have a small space so my bedroom is also my desk area, and hangout area
Valentina, I do not like the fan with light either, but we do need the fan once in a while in our living room. What do you recommend in such case? I would love to get some modern looking light/fan combo but was not able to find so far. Will appreciate your recommendation.
I came home one day to a 2 piece leather recliner set, a single and a double seater. The double seater has cup holders, that’s right. My husband bought them while I was at work, yep. 😮 We still have them, but at least the color is light gray instead of dog s--- brown. Good thing I love him a whole lot. Anyhow, you gotta pick your battles-I guess. 😅
Would love to hear recommendations for replacing ceiling fans. they are not pretty but are so useful. Its hot in Georgia and my fans are in use constantly. Even in winter, I need some air circulation. I rarely use the lights on them. Is it better to have fans without lights?
It looks like the only one she can stomach is a black one without lights. You don't need to replace yours until you go to sell; but, who knows what will be "in" when you do sell. I could update my lighting as I do have some 20 year old fans (which come in handy for moving air).
You should check out the new retractable fans. The blades only appear when the fan is in use. Otherwise, it's just a light fixture. They come in all price points and decor styles. I plan to replace my very 90s fans with them.
I laughed along with you on this video! So on point about the recliner lol! When my husband's old poufy recliner had seen better days, we compromised and got one of those more modern, slim recliners, not so bad....and may i suggest the pottery barn pillow inserts, reasonably priced and great quality. Have a great weekend..PS love your outfit today!
Many years ago my ex and I were furniture shopping. He wanted a recliner and I didn’t. We went to Ethan Allen (are they still around?) and the designer showed us wingback recliners that you wouldn’t know were recliners. I still have them.
For the most part I love everything you do, although I myself am a very traditional furniture buyer/decorator etc., but most chairs paired with sofa in a living room in a lot of pictures/or from decorators now a days are NOT comfortable....I want all I own and use for comfort as well as for design a very traditional comfortable homey decor....so you feel you can sit for hours watching a movie!!
We have a leather (cream) couch and loveseat that have reclining seats, and I love it. But, I have a question. How do you do a coffee table when you have reclining seats in your sofa?
I'm really shocked about what you said about my 2" wood blinds. I use them to block the sun otherwise my Air Conditioning bills would be astronomical. Only a heavy curtain or plantation shutters would be able to replace the performance. Plantation shutters might work on a couple of my windows; but, they would significantly ruin my view. I would have to have them open all the time due to my cats.
I agree, here in New England thermal insulated curtains are a must! I even replaced my old windows with super duper thermal ones and I still need the curtains. I do change them up for the seasons.
@@shellyjoe6657 I did listen to designers at first and painted everything white and had white furniture, etc. Then, I nestled into the coziness that is my own design style and it's called homey realism -- LOL.
Thank you Bugs Bunny for your comment. Living in So. California, we also use blackout drapes and blackout roman shades. I'd love to change them out, but haven't found anything "more modern" that would keep out the summer heat. A breezy curtain would look beautiful, but practicality reigns supreme.

@@dianajohnson2866 I agree. I live in Florida. I’m having the windows that have heat gain tinted and putting shades and drapes over them. My electric bill is way too high.
I manifested a white kivik love seat and Chase on fb market for $60. I just called up ikea for the sectional attachment bracket, turned it into a sectional and switched out those cheap 2” plastic legs to some nice 4” mid century legs. It was so dirty my arms hurt for days from bleach soaking the covers and spot treating the stains. But it’s beautiful now! Great finds on market place!
I was with a girlfriend for a couple years and moved in with her. Went from my energetic, minimalist downtown apartment with my clean lines/metal/glass/leather theme to her suburb and had to get used to the Live Laugh Love thing with the poofy big box store brown recliner couches and massive flat screen TV that sucked all the space out of the room. And I just realized our decorating styles mirrored our personalities. And our personalities made us break up!
As usual I love the content! I so enjoy grabbing a cup of tea and watching every time you post. My husband has never asked for a recliner because he knows better🤣 Unfortunately he loves ceiling fans. I've warned him that one of these days he's going to come home to a beautiful light fixture it it's place and 1 for our bedroom is just waiting for the electrician to come! Next will be the living room. After I do these things he usually admits that you and I are right.
I replaced the ceiling fan in our bedroom with a beautiful crystal and linen light fixture. We nearly died from the heat. It turned out that the temperature was impossible to balance in the house and our bedroom is on the hot end. A fan was the only answer, it works. The fans in the house balance the temperature.
I'm guessing that rolled arms will be back strong in 20 years. I remember adding foam to my straight armed sofa with duct tape and doing slip covers to make them look like they had rolled arms and be more current for that time. If you have a good sofa frame, getting reupholstered and changing the arms can be a good option. You can get a performance fabric and have a food stain impervious custom linen sofa for the cost of a less expensive sofa. (My dream) Face it, we humans like change, Fun stuff :) Thanks V
I removed heavy valances and heavy curtains and replaced with new lighter panels hung wider and high. couldn’t believe the difference in the light coming in!. In my new house I removed slat blinds right away
Years ago I saw an arrangement of flowers with peonies in it. I looked close because peonies, in my experience, are always full of ants and would not want that inside. No ants. No scent. I did not realize they were silk until I got that close. Never, ever since have I seen silk flowers that realistic.
I love my monochromatic antiques that are in white off white or crocks very light in color mixed with old small antique. I have collections that are two hundred years old and I do agree to mix new with my historic art. I have colored maps in very beautiful frames from 1864 with a lithograph of Abraham Lincoln. I love history, but I agree in moderation and it must be cleaned and no stinky rugs. I’m a clean freak, but at 62 I don’t have the strength or money to get to fancy! I enjoy your program even tho I’m a history buff and it can be stunning with French old decor mixed with the right color black highlights in new pottery. Whatever works and it can be unique but it must be cohesive! I love old stone too…I’d like to see what you do with clients that have love for old historic pieces. It doesn’t need to look like a museum…it can still have the charm of an old English cottage and of course even antique wool rugs are loved by many and if not overdone you have a masterpiece with lovely candles and the smell of homemade soup in a kettle and iron gates on my walls with an old remnant of a piano from Chicago above a doorway. These pieces you can’t find in IKEA or Home Goods and the value is sustainable. Trust me if it’s done right it’s stunning. ❤ I’d love to meet you and hear what you have to say about really working on merging these gems with Pottery Barn. Love your program!❤❤❤

Okay I hear ya ~ ditch the faux floral arrangements. I live in a tropical area and have 3 that fit the decor but I’ve had them for 17 years and 6 moves. You’ve convinced me to say out with the old 🌸

Thank you for sharing all your tips & tricks and have a wonderful week ❤
I adore your videos even though we have a very different style as decorators. I just want to point out that proper drapes have a function that may get more critical as the reorganization of covid and other global politics continues. We have seen a huge jump in fuel prices and drapes really do help control home comfort when used properly. Who is teaching kids how to draw them on the south side in the mornings in the winter and close them when the windows are no longer capturing heat? Good quality drapes can and should be laundered and UV rays controlled where needed. I think they will be rolling back into style in no time …

@@dorothydecesare1607 yes! Comfort any day over a stale, sterile, cold and uninviting room.
Agree with you on all this .. specifically can’t tolerate valances of any kind , second the big puffy Michelin man recliners (sofas) are a No go. Had to add undersized Artwork
You’re such an inspiration to me. I do Fluid Art as a hobby, and I always look for decor trends. I love your content
I’m not sure what the issue with blinds is. When you don’t need privacy you can pull them all the way up and they disappear.
There’s always an aesthetic solution to these kinds of problems and I think you nailed it
I absolutely love my ceiling fans. When menopause hits you want fans from every angle like a hurricane going on. My fan stays. My heavy curtains stay. My country-SouthernLiving style stays.
Please tell where you found simple white fans!!??? I am struggling to find!
@@thevictorianedge5465 Absolutely agree about the fans. I'm going through menopause in Texas. We were still having 90-degree weather in October. The high temps are bad enough. Throw in menopause and, whew, don't know what I'd do without that cool air from the ceiling.
Brilliantly said. We LIVE in houses and need to be comfortable AND eco-friendly. I like ceiling matching fans, too!
I agree, paint furniture if it becomes tired, but you still love the piece 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤️🇬🇧xx great video hun 😊
Recliners are a must for older people with mobility problems. Updated recliners? Too expensive & not comfortable.
Leather recliner provides excellent support and comfort for my elderly mother. I agree about puffy recliners but don’t discount them
Actually, doctors don't recommend them because they are bad for circulation.
My coffee table was my dads so I can’t get rid of it. I painted it flat black and I just love it!!!
How do you clean it?
When we moved into our renovated new home my husband insisted on a recliner so I made sure it was a stylish Italian brand which cost the earth but it looks good.
You are def my favorite channel and I have learned & implemented many of your tips. Thanks so much!
Love this video, laughed so hard right along with you! Can't wait til the next!
Venetian blinds never go out of style - I live in the HOT south - ceiling fans are great down here too !
Don't apologize your spot on 👍👍👍
I need the fan with the lights, I live in South Florida and even if our a/c is blasting all day that fan helps so much lol
I’m a 60+ woman and love my recliner because it loves my aching back. What are the best alternatives for me. I’m going to be redoing my upper level and throwing out most things.
i would love to get rid of my textured ceilings but it’s crazy expensive! And I’m too lazy to do it myself.
Exactly!
I agree with you 100% in this video!!! You are so funny in communicating this topic 🤣
I bought a tatty old chest of drawers at auction for £5, painted it black and swapped the knobs for chrome ones, it looks fab!
That’s exactly why I haven’t even thought about new furniture yet. As soon as the kids are grown and the animals are gone- we go shopping!
Help please
Lined / thermal drapes in winter are great ; then switch to lighter fabric warmer weather is intense sun thru your windows is not a problem .
I, too, need a recommendation of one that's updated yet functional.
Check out Big ass fans’ residential line…Oh, there are also fans that only have 2 blades. Those look pretty modern as well.
We have the classic Hunter original with no light kit, just the fan. Very simple & clean lined, all white- just disappears against the white ceiling
There are some great looking, very modern fans with simple round, flat LED lights. Just start googling!
@@lucimathews8980 Yes ! White on white is less obtrusive than a black or brown ceiling fan against a light color ceiling .
There are some cute covers for those old leather chairs or even have a custom cover.
Gotta rewatch your favorite “Black” colors video. So good.
Silicone tulips are amazing! They look and feel real.
Also wooden flowers are pretty.
I like my 2 silk flower arrangements and intend to keep them 😊
I came home one day to a 2 piece leather recliner set, a single and a double seater.
There are a lot of more modern looking ceiling fans out there that could replace the more traditional looking ones.
@@bugsbunny2357 I need light while I clean.
When the fan is running with the light on, it creates an unpleasant strobe effect reflecting off of the ceiling.
😂
Many years ago my ex and I were furniture shopping. He wanted a recliner and I didn’t. We went to Ethan Allen (are they still around?) and the designer showed us wingback recliners that you wouldn’t know were recliners. I still have them.
Great video, love all the pics of examples and humour
For the most part I love everything you do, although I myself am a very traditional furniture buyer/decorator etc., but most chairs paired with sofa in a living room in a lot of pictures/or from decorators now a days are NOT comfortable....I want all I own and use for comfort as well as for design a very traditional comfortable homey decor....so you feel you can sit for hours watching a movie!!
Love it Valentina! Have you thought about doing a meet and greet?
You're so cute! I love these "look old" or "mistake" videos. What do you think about plantation shutters?
@@shellyjoe6657 Our central Illinois winters in a rural area also call for " insulation " - three hours south of Chicago & Lake Michigan , we still get the " lake effect " winter weather ! Brrrrr ... !!! 😗
@@dianajohnson2866 I agree. I live in Florida. I’m having the windows that have heat gain tinted and putting shades and drapes over them. My electric bill is way too high.
Moving into a new apartment and I’ve been wanting to change up my style, so this video is helpful and I agree with just about everything! Thank you!
Thanks V for ripping off the band-aid and telling us all what we need to hear. You are so much fun.
I agree with the antiques, need to mix in some modern elements, or take a Victorian chair and paint it a bright color and recover in a modern pattern.
I’d love to meet you and hear what you have to say about really working on merging these gems with Pottery Barn.
Love your program!❤❤❤
I love how you make yourself laugh 😂
We don't like a lot of pillows on our couches and only have one - for my head when I lay down - and I just got my new, updated pillow from CB2 on Friday - yay! Got the Xand pillow, love it. We do have a few throws though. They are next to be replaced.
Do you have experience with ruggable washable rugs? Curious if they are as good as they sound.
Okay I hear ya ~ ditch the faux floral arrangements. I live in a tropical area and have 3 that fit the decor but I’ve had them for 17 years and 6 moves. You’ve convinced me to say out with the old 🌸
We could not find a rug to put in our room. All the ones liked, would loose the pretty pattern under the king sized bed. So we went to a flooring store had a rug cut to size and bound. Very inexpensive and great quality
I find these videos amusing. I live in a 1916 remodeled house. I prefer old.
Definitely feel the same about recliners!
I have a new modern fan but I have to have a fan in my bedroom. I am hot blooded!
Absolutely!
Valentine, I enjoyed watching your video while having my coffee and loved the ideas on how to freshen up around here. Honestly it felt like I was just chitchatting with friends. I love your style and am going to follow up this video with the paint video. I can’t remember the white I liked so I will rewatch. Thank you for sharing all your tips & tricks and have a wonderful week ❤
For a contemporary space, drop the overstuffed recliner and install an Eames lounger - same comfort 100x more chic!
I think they will be rolling back into style in no time …
Im buying some soon just for that purpose! Energy savings!
Love to hang out with V😀 and learn new tips and tricks
You are so right about recliners lol put my husband’s in His tv room…yeah 👌

I am the woman that LOVES a recliner- my husband hates them 😂
I have “my” living room that is pretty and stylish. We have leather sofa recliners in his and our boys tv room. It works because it’s at the back of our home with a door!
Love your videos! I've changed out the blankets, and pillows in my living room and even added larger items you have suggested while removed the knick knack things....but we still have those orange looking oak floors. Any suggestions for a rug or paint color if I have chocolate brown couches that would minimize the orange tone? I'm also stealing the blanket over the arm trick. Thanks again for all of the tips and links to great updates!
A tip the paint guy suggested was to subtly put the color you want to minimize into the room. Use a pillow with pops of that color, vase, art etc.
I have some of those things you talked about and your right I need a change. Thank you for this video😊
I love the black and brown pillow you held up towards the end of the video, but could not find it. Would you mind please to share the site where it was purchased? Thanks and I love love your videos! Thank you!
