I think it turned out nice, good work. However, this brings home to me the dangers of picking up free furniture, roadside or not. The chance of bringing home rodents or bugs is very real along with Hantavirus.
The primer can add a bit of a texture that can be seen after painting if not sanded off first. You don't have to but it will give you a smoother finish.

Might be a dumb question, but if you're going to paint and you are using a primer first, why do you have to sand?
