As I watch in 720p or 1080p, it seemed a bit mildly grainy and the background lighting seemed a bit more blown out than normal. But this just proves that it's more about the skill of the videographer and editor rather than the equipment. Kudos to you and your team, great work
Or you could buy :- Used sony a6300 with kit and prime lens:650$ Rode videomic go :60$ Tripod:30-50$ 4 softbox light:-150$ Gorrilapod:60$ Total :910$ Still you are going to be left with 100$. With this set up you can shoot awesome 4K with 60fps and 1080 FHD at 60/120fps. You can vlog with it, make sit down videos, you can shoot b-roll, Click amazing product photos, Sony A6300 is weather sealed so you can throw it in your backpack and take it anywhere. Pump up your Instagram game, you get that super fast focus on Sony, do much more . This is my best video/audio set-up. For creators .
I was literally going to comment this lol they could have bought that and a extra lens or 2 n decent lights for a 1000 but the test came out more then decent cause I saw the video they shot
The FF aesthetic with shallow DOF, plus the thick colours and dynamic range you get in 14bit RAW, are way more valuable than 4K to me personally. Watch the Asus 200$ laptop video, it looks so cinematic and is very crisp too!
The 5D Mark II is the camera that originally took UA-cam videos from amateur footage shot on phones and camcorders to production quality back in 2008-2010. Before it there was a huge gap between consumer video cameras and professional level Canon and Sony video gear. It wasn't even meant to be a video camera primarily. It was just the first mainstream full-frame DSLR that happened to shoot 1080p video. Plus of course the firmware could be hacked to make it a specialised video machine.
the sharpness wasn't there but I wasn't trying to pixel peep, 90% of the video is content, good audio, and smart camera control and placement. resolution is just a really nice bonus.
The old Pentax lenses had a a significant, but not much, amount of color fringing and it's really not that bad. I just noticed it because of that green line streak from the top right corner of the window sill on 6:12. By the way, great video!
Sony a mount. You can get an a77 or a65 for well under 4-500 bucks, Minolta lenses are brilliant and it shoots native 1080p so you are getting auto focus, high grade glass, and higher quality.
I couldn't tell when I first saw. Of course now that the cat's out of the bag I can tell. People often forget just how important editing can be great job guys
I always say it’s not the tools you have, but the skill. And it shows, I would have never said that the ASUS video was shot on something different. I mean seeing it normally not looking for anything odd.
I noticed with yesterdays video that some shots had alot of extra noise (in the video, not audio) now I know why. Great job up-scaling from 720p, that is quite impressive.
Ok i actually didn't realize that the 200$ laptop video was shot with a different camera. I realized that the Audio was different and thought you had some problems with it or that you couldn't use your usual microphone for whatever reason but i didn't think it was all shot on another setup. That's actually really impressive.
Austin, as a consumer of budget devices, I really need your help. Huawei is now near the top of the smartphone market, especially in the budget ends, even holding their own with Xiaomi. But there's a big issue across several of the lower end devices. They market their expandable storage as up to 128 or 256 GB. But what they don't say is that you CANNOT MOVE apps to the SD card. And this applies for so many models. This might not sound like a problem, but please hear me out. I recently purchased the Y7 (2018), a budget Huawei phone. I thought I'd found a bargain, but I'm thinking now I may have been wrong. A 16GB Huawei device has 5GB used by the firmware, 3GB by factory apps and 1GB by pre-existing unremovable crap that the system doesn't identify. That leaves you with 7GB free. Sounds like it could be enough for a budget phone right? When you actually update the apps, however, this number shrinks to about 5GB. Then you actually install the apps you want and you've a measly 3-4GB left. Those without an SD card will run this up instantly, and those with one will struggle. Huawei needs to give their users the choice of moving apps and not just the app data (through excessive tinkering) to the external storage. Even a 32GB model won't be enough for the average user in 2019 if apps can't be moved to an SD card. Please address this soon. Sincerely, a loyal subscriber.
To everyone saying they could've used a sony or panasonic Keep in mind those are either APS-C or Micro four third sensor Cameras 5d mark ii is a FULL-FRAME camera, the low light and bokeh on a camera with such a sensor is unbeatable by a smaller sensor camera
they over estimated canon in this case. They should’ve used (used prices) A Sony A7 -500 A Sony A6000 - 400 A Panasonic G6 -300 (with a lens it’s 300) A Panasonic GH3 - 325 or he’ll you could’ve even gotten A Fuji XT10 - 300 A Fuji XT1 - 350 And for vintage lenses the ones you wanna use are probably Minolta lenses or Nikon lenses. Since you can get an adapter from Sony E to Minolta or Nikon that has a BUILT IN ND FILTER. This saves you a TON of money long term since you don’t have to buy filters for each lens. And saves you a TON of times dealing with step up rings. This is 60-80 bucks. Overall i’d say the most effective method of going about this would’ve been Sony A6000 (300) Nikon F to Sony E ND Adapter (80) Vivitar Macro 28mm F2.5 (50) ((really good close up shots) Nikon Ai 35mm f2 (90) good talking head and general shots) The results would’ve been FAR better and i believe cheaper using this method. You get way more features, focus peaking, audio levels, if you waned a Mic sony DOES make a dedicated hot shoe mic that’s pretty good for the Sony A6000. Idk. Food for thought. I felt like more research could’ve been done with this video.
I think all of you are saying that the footage is soft because they were using a manual lens Its a vintage lens and the focus was manual so whenever Austin moved back and forth while speaking - he was out of focus.
Sony Nex 3 + Neewer 35mm f1.2 (yes I did spell that correctly) could be your camera setup for only $300. If you could spend more, you could get a Viltrox 85mm f1.8. For a better camera, try the Sony Nex 7.
I like the Asus video even more... you can see that it is not as "sharp", but the audio & lighting are totally on target. Of course, throw in the free Davinci Resolve software to edit it and you really can keep the "total" setup very inexpensive.
Not even going to lie, when I first saw the video I didn’t notice to much of a difference from the usual setup. After watching the video, I did notice the differences in sharpness, smoothness of shots, and in to out of focus and back into focus shots.
I can see the difference in image quality, there's a little misfocus sometimes, narrower dynamic range, a little oversaturation, etc. but the audio difference is negligible.
Oh I see, thats why the quality was so different on the $200 laptop video. I noticed a lot of weirdness with the sharpening, focus and I even saw some chromatic aberration on the edges.
Other than the occasional soft focus and some noise when filming the laptop screen, it actually looks really good. I sense a collaboration with Indy Mogul in the future...lol
Great video idea Austin and team. I have always wondered about using higher end cameras vs. run of the mill cameras. I am excited to see the video made with that Canon 5D Mark ii. (:
I came here after the laptop video, I knew something was up just from the noise in some shots...but otherwise it was beautiful! You guys are super talented!
I don't know about other people, but I definitely noticed a difference - particularly, I saw a lot of noise in the image and a lot of chromatic abberation... But then, I do a bit of photography, so I may have been more sensitive to that. If most people didn't notice a difference, mission accomplished :P

It looked fine, but when I first watched it, I noticed something was a bit off with the audio. Now I know what it was.
highlight was blown and there are lots of dithering artifacts. But overall, the sharpness isn't that bad(watched on my phone).
Not sure if that’s a compliment 🤔
@@DamienK28 I got a 55inch 4K TV and I noticed it big time. BUT It still looked great. I used to shoot student films with a 5D Mark 2.
I knew something was way weird. I thought that Austin's studio got shut down and he was forced to downgrade.
As I watch in 720p or 1080p, it seemed a bit mildly grainy and the background lighting seemed a bit more blown out than normal. But this just proves that it's more about the skill of the videographer and editor rather than the equipment. Kudos to you and your team, great work
