During the 1980s, mainstream Hindi movies were going through a tough time. The decade was most often referred to as the “lost decade” and is remembered for its “trashy” content. Some commentators have called this a “blot” on the history of Indian cinema.
But during the same decade, a parallel movement was brewing and a new kind of cinema emerged- often referred to as B-Grade movies. These movies had an important influence on mainstream movies by introducing genres like horror and sex.
In this video, we trace the journey of B-grade movies from its rise in the 1980s, its evolution in the 1990s and its fall in the 2000s, and its rise again in the form of OTT.

One thing you missed is crime patrol. Late 2000's and early 2010's Sony tv crime patrol and Star bharat Savdhaan India got huge TRP. Illicit relationship epsiodes got more TRPS due its direction and excitement in story. This brought back a huge craving for surface porn among audience. Who didn't wanted morals but had fantasy of illicit relationship.

Good example is Om Prakash who sung 'Aunty me aaun kya' something. Once huge crowd gathered at canught place in delhi to sing that song. This opened up a market space for this type of content.

Meerut is a city that has a surprising connection to the world of B-grade movies. I have been living here for 19 years, but I never knew that it was a major hub for producing and distributing these low-budget films. I always assumed that every city like Meerut had its own variety of entertainment options for different kinds of audiences. I remember seeing many posters of B-grade movies on the walls and billboards when I was going to school or coming back home. Honestly I see this as an absolutely genius moneymaking way! Whoever came up with these techniques, hats off bro! but jokes aside, this is pretty much a case study on businesses no lesser than tech or automobile industry... they saw the deficit, took the opportunity, found innovative methods to implement their vision, often circumventing legal obstacles ingeniously, and ruled the market! Also, this took me down the memory lane of those cheap movies in my state too! I always wondered why there were a boom in such movies in a certain period of time in cinema, now I got the answer!! Being a Boomer, I can validate every word you have said about the transition of b grade movies in 80's to big actors like Mithun, jacky shroff, and Dharam ji shifting to these movies and how Ullu and ALt are secretly ruling the OTT platform with their content. The economics is also well explained by you., U can notice that all Mithun movies were shot in ooty as he had his own hotel over there. There B grade movies had their own fan base and they are here to stay in form or another

This kind of movies have inculcated the cultural biases in small cities. Being 90s child from small town, It was very shameful crossing cinema hall where B grade movies were projected. Usually there was one cinema hall which have projected these kind of cinema. I know, what was absurd earlier, now is new normal. Internet have had infused much varieties along with wider outreach.

It always doesn't mean B grade movies are bad. Directors like Steven Spielberg, Ron howard and Actors like Sylvester Stallone, Jack Nicholson, Robert De Niro they all come from B grade movies. And, 80's usually was a dark time for cinema altogether, even for Hollywood (though reasons were different).

I think the following topics should also be discussed 1) Why is sex such a taboo in our culture, as we are world's most populated country & also we are from the world of kamasutra & erotic art, 2) influence of 80s/90s Bollywood movie rape scenes that had effect on society, esp males, 3) prostitution is found in every city & town in our country, but why is it so hush-hush, 4) sexuality & frustrations of Indian youth in different states of India. Basically his explanation was that Ancient Indian Society were more open in their sexuality and were not embarrassed to talk about Sex and other problems like Menstruation. But this changed when we started getting invaded by Mughols and British. British were actually more suppressive towards sexuality as they considered this barbaric. So in a way of "civilizing us", they started destroying any manuscript about sex and erotic arts. Due to this mentality, we feel really embarrassed when we are watching a movie with our family and some adult scene comes up.
