It's amazing how Rick re-trained his mind to do this, accolades.
He’s lucky that his accident did not happen a few years earlier or a comeback would not have been possible. A lot of credit is owed to Pete Harley, who designed Ricks’ first electronic kit when Midi was new in the mid 80’s, and encouraged him to play and assured him it would be possible with one arm.

As a long time drummer myself. I could not imagine having to rewire my brain and all the muscle memory it took to learn to play with one arm. Rick is a stud 😎🤘
Ok, the kick drum pedal is an Axis pedal with a custom footplate and a DW beater (Rick digs the weight of them). On that particular tour, the kick head was a Powerstroke 3 and the trigger was a Hart Dynamics modded ddrum (far more accurate and durable than the off the shelf ddrum triggers). The snare is a 13x5.5 (could be a 5) steal Yamaha snare (Rick's a Yamaha endorsee, so the kick is a Yamaha as well). For Cymbals, the crashes are 18 and 19" Zildjian Hybrid crashes (most of the time).
Rick said recently on the Howard Stern show....that because his kit needs to be exactly positioned the same each and every time, the whole thing is mounted on a steel plate and boxed/moved/trucked intact.
I saw that interview. I like the part where he says they put a cover over the kit for transport and sometimes they leave him in there. lol.

I'm not a musician or a drummer, but I have to live like Rick, being that I can only use my left arm/hand as with him he uses his right side. Good job Rick for doing all you've been able to do

I admire Rick Allen’s courage to continue playing even though he lost his left arm, and I also admire Ricks genius on building a kit he designed according to his specs! Thank God for technology!

Kudos to Rick Allen for not giving up. That would've been so easy to do. "I'm a one-armed drummer. How the hell am I going to continue playing?" But thanks to ddrum who first helped him out if I'm not mistaken, and thanks to the other guys in the band for sticking with him, no pun intended. I saw Def Leppard on the Hysteria tour in 1988 and I watched Rick 90% of the time because I'm a drummer and I wanted to see how he did it live. Very impressive and I'm sure he's only gotten better since then.
Man that seems so complicated to figure out. So cool to watch Rick play and continue to play.

Regarding the sampling, all of the drum sounds you hear out front (or on stage) are created by Rick and the band's producer/foh engineer. Some are pulled from original recordings, other's created to suit the live environment.

Anyone who's says Lep plays on a track can stick a flower in their ear.
...the ride is a 20" K medium ride. Rick is very particular about the cymbal tones and will audition 20 or more pairs to find a set of crashes that he likes. The hats are all 13" Zildjians. It would be impossible to tell you what is up there on any given day as each "set" is is mixed up to get a similar tone across all four pairs.
Love this! Just saw Def Leppard last nite at Cruzan amphitheater....I play an electronic kit (most of the time) & it was made in the UK... a little drum kit called Traps ;)
+stickssb I also use Traps A400 acoustic drum set which I converted to electronic with mesh heads, cymbals from Yamaha and Kit-toy (a UK guy)

Bigrj 91 If he really wanted it, he would have done that already... The reason for him decide not to do this is his choice or, for technical reasons, it's not possible. Because money for that, for sure, he has!
Not quite. Actually there's no where near the technology for that yet. Drumming requires extreme reflexes and subtleties.
He said back in 1992 on Fighting Back that he decided against a mechanical arm because of logistical issues with the batteries and he did want to learn to rely on one.
tech has come a long way but many upper extremity amputees still elect to make do without a prosthesis. Still a drag to put the thing on and take it off

Rick had spiritual awakening after his accident. The sunflowers and incense are something he uses to stay in his preferred state of mind.

Sometimes a 'click track' to keep timing, or/and a special mix of the other instruments and vocals, tuned for the drummer, or sometimes, just for noise protection.
