Sonic CD - Ending Scene Comparison

  • As some of you may know, Sonic Origins includes Sonic CD, and interestingly the FMVs on there, got some touch ups and visual improvements over prior iterations. This made me curious to compare every single version of this ending scene that we have access to, and the results are certainly interesting.
The 96 PC version, is the only version where any real effort was made to sync up the footage to the Mega CD original, although it likewise runs at 15 fps and in a much smaller screen.
Sonic Jam, Sonic Mega Collection and Sonic Origins, all appear to use the source tape master that SEGA has, with only minor differences between them like Sonic Jam's version being much more compressed and at a lower framerate, Mega Collection having some fade in effects as a result of being mixed in with other scenes, and Origins being the highest quality version available, with a notable effort to remove the ghosting.
Sonic Gems Collection is interesting, because it's the only version following the 96 PC port, to omit the R2 level scene, it also consistently appears to be the slowest version for the post 96 PC releases.
The 2011 rerelease has a fade in effect at the start, not on any other version, and appears slightly faster than Gems Collection, but other than that I don't have much to say there.
Worth noting is that the MCD original, 96 PC port, 2011 rerelease and Sonic Origins, all had a portion of the credits in a much smaller window alongside the text scroll, and so they had to all be zoomed in accordingly for comparison's sake.
Finally, I should note that every single version of this scene has ghosting in one form or another, even the Mega CD original isn't safe from it surprisingly enough.
Credit goes to vanilla and Smash45 for the 1996 PC port footage and Sonic Gems Collection respectively.
P.S for those asking about this specific track, I have uploaded a video of it, with even a FLAC file attached in the description.

God I wish they hadn't changed the timing in Origins
It's kind of interesting that it goes at the same speed as Jam and Mega Collection's video, but I do miss the JP audio in the 2011 Rerelease having actual audio/sfx for the scene leading up to the iconic pose and credits. The flowers at the end have unique audio too, and the "You're too cool!" appears late in Origins on a black screen instead of with the flowers.

    • @wonder-games3579
      @wonder-games3579  2 роки тому +32

I'm inclined to believe that the timing/speed in Origins is the *original* speed present on the tape master that SEGA has. While the other versions on screen here are slowed down from it.
I actually didn't focus on the audio side of things here, so interesting observations you caught there! Thanks for sharing!

@@wonder-games3579 that probably is the most likely case since the video was restored by a professional team at Discotek who tend to try to be as accurate as possible to the source, so they'd more than likely want to keep it as accurate to the source tape as possible and not mess with the speed. I think the video quality being cleaner is a good enough tradeoff for the speed being weird compared to older ports

    • @SubsonicSparkle
      @SubsonicSparkle 2 роки тому +4

@@wonder-games3579 - I’m quite certain that the Origins version is sped up by about 2x, since the animation has clearly been overclocked beyond any normal television frame standard. I’m pretty sure it was originally sped up for the Sonic Jam collection, to squeeze both the good and bad endings into the sequence without outlasting the song. The fact that SEGA carefully matched sound effects and even Cosmic Eternity to the original speed of the footage confirms that for me.

    • @wonder-games3579
      @wonder-games3579  2 роки тому +8

@@SubsonicSparkle I do have a counterpoint to make here though. I'm pretty sure that the sound effects for the ending theme on the Japanese version don't match ANY of the versions shown above, not even the Mega CD one, the sound effects of the pillar falling I believe is what doesn't match any of them, though there could be more. I haven't checked this thoroughly in some time.
Edit: I have a few more things to note, the video framerate I'm pretty sure was always 30 fps at most on the games, which is well below the highest TV frame rate standard at the time of 59.94 fps. I think the animation was always at this speed, with the idea that some parts of it would be slowed down due to some sort of restrictions on the MCD version. This is proven by how some portions of the MCD FMV do match up with the footage on Jam, Mega Collection and Origins, specifically Palmtree Panic and Metallic Madness.
Finally, you mention Cosmic Eternity is synced up the animation, but...on the MCD version there's a good extra few minutes of the song playing without any animation.

  • @eliel0503

    In depth comparasion:
    Mega CD:
-Cropped to 16:9 until the credit cutscenes
-New extended animation not seen in the uncompressed cut (spinning dress and blinking Amy)
-The ghosting almost not noticeble but it's still there
-Adds more details to the credit cutscenes
    -Skips R2 (because it's a deleted zone)
-You can see a little bit more of the top and bottom of the credit cutscenes (uncropped credit cutscenes)
    1996 PC Port:
    -The lowest quality one yet
-Cropped to 16:9 until the credit cutscenes
-The ghosting is not as noticeble because of how small it is
    -Skips R2
-You can see more of the top and bottom of the credit cutscenes (uncropped credit cutscenes)
    Sonic Jam:
    -Plays at the original speed
    -Ghosting.
    -Somewhat compressed
    -Posibly the most unaltered version
    Sonic Mega Collection:
-Same as the Jam Version but the quality is a bit higher
    -Missing frames (i think)
    -Sonic Gems Collection
-Posibly the slowest though some scenes play a bit faster
    -Has less ghosting
    -Skips R2
-Quartz Quadrant cutscene ends earlier (maybe others as well)
-Credit Cutscenes don't fade when they end
    2011 HD Rerelease:
-Quality might be the same as Mega Collection's version but plays a bit slower
    -Ghosting
-You can see more of the top and bottom of the credit cutscenes (uncropped credit cutscenes)
    -Compressed credit cutscenes
    Sonic Origins:
    -Plays at the original speed
-AI Upscaled to 4K, the highest quality one yet
    -Ghosting is mostly removed
-the outlines in Metal Sonic cutscene look wobbly seeing it frame by frame
    -Missing frames
    My ranking:
    1st Sonic Origins
    2nd Sonic Jam
    3rd Sonic Mega Collection
    4th Sonic Gems Collection
    5th 2011 HD Rerelease

I've always suspected that somehow the original version was made to run on a computer that ran slower or something, and that the footage was faster on newer computers or something. I'm sure that's not actually how it works, but I'm just glad to know that I'm right that the footage has been too fast! This is because the animation for the game was finished before the finalized plan for the game was set out. It was originally supposed to be that Stardust Speedway would be the final level of the game, and Metallic Madness would not be in the game. During the early stages of development, there was another level, titled R2, that was removed from the game later on in development. Because the animation for the game was finished early, you can see the cutscene for the R2 level after Palmtree Panic. Because the level did not show up for the final version, the Mega-CD version had it removed. However, in later ports of the game, the cutscene was never removed.

@@SolidN8It's not completely identical, actually. Origins changes the 1 up soundbite from Sonic saying "Yes!" to the soundbite that plays when you break a robot generator (and for that alone I consider Origins the inferior remaster). Also, Tails is playable from the start as opposed to being gated behind completion and Plus adds Knuckles and Amy to the roster as well.
