- In this video Big Tractor Power spends time out in the field with a 300 hp Case IH MILLER NITRO 6300 Sprayer equipped with a120ft boom and 1,400 gallon solution tank. This video takes viewers out into the field to see this big sprayer working in 12 ft tall corn applying fungicide. Viewers will also spend time in the cab of the MILLER NITRO 6300 to see the farmers perspective of operating the sprayer.

An amazing machine. I remember my Uncle spraying and had to backup to a slough to fill water, then pour the chemical in from a 5 gallon can. The boom was maybe 8 ft wide. This was in the early 60s! He would be stunned to see this machine.

bigtractorpower I don’t remember the make or model #. It was a pull type. He pulled with a Farmall M.

Pretty cool seeing the sprayer drive off with its drone escort. I never liked spraying high crops with a front boom. Even with the back mounted center spray boom, a lot of product will drift onto the sprayer. But that's my experience from a long time ago. Great video.

Very cool! Farmers over here opted to topdress more fertilizer instead of spraying fungicide this year at tassel. Corn harvest will start in just one more week over here in central Louisiana.
Interesting on the top dressing. Corn chopping will start here in the next few days. August 20 is the normal shelling time here although with the wet spring it may be closer to September.

This is amazing to watch. We raised corn that got to 12 to 13 feet in northern California in the '50s when I was growing up there. I hated walking through it at this stage checking the water as we irrigated it. We thought four 40" rows was wide equipment then.

I would like to film an OXBO. I grew up about 10 miles from their main plant. I do have videos on the way fearing OXBO pea combines, green bean harvesters and sweet corn pickers.

Yeah we run the blue version of this, the SP.275F 100ft. The boom up front is a game changer. The one thing i wish they'd add is 4 wheel steer on the headland turn so ye dont trample as much, go back to front steer on the straight.

That’s one hell of a cool sprayer I can’t believe the driver is driving it manually to I thought for sure I’d be using auto steer in there but I do see when they do some turns out there is a little bit of damage to the corn
but not too bad
no most guys do not use auto steer because it does not react fast enough when go those speeds when spraying and you run to much down. even if you have rtk some guys still say it's still no go and that sub inch accurately
Where we're currently at right now with these GPS guided autosteer systems, you can have accuracy and you can have speed(latency being the bridge between speed & accuracy that's lacking), but you can't have both.
All in due time though, technology will progress, accuracy will only grow, and we'll see latency shrink to the point that sub-inch accuracy will be viable at such speeds, especially as we begin to see automated equipment entering the fields too(no, not sci-fi ultra futuristic concept machines - but just simply regular contemporary GPS guided tractors that are acting as, say, driverless automated grain carts for instance, BTP even has a video from a few years ago of one of these)
It is a neat machine to see in action. The small amount of corn driven over on the turns is minimal compared to preserving the rest of the crop.

Is it possible to apply fungicide from the air and would it be more or less expensive ?
Also, what happens if it breaks down in the middle of a huge field ? Just run over as little corn as possible to get to it ? Great video as always, thumbs up BTP !!
Seems like good area for drones to be developed, large drones that only need to hover at a few feet high,
Drones applying fungicide is happening now. There is one here in WKY that will spray 3 acres return to the truck refill automatically with fungicide and fuel and then spray the next three acres. Someday we may see drones seeding the crop too.

Yeah these farmer guys are new at this growing stuff and have probably never tried to do it the cheaper easier way without millions of dollars worth of equipment and chemicals. Did they even read the directions for that thing?

Is this more cost effective versus aerial spraying?
The price per acre is very comparable. One advantage of this is that you can apply when needed and don't have to wait for a custom applicator.
Plus better coverage typically
Price is at least $4.00 per acre cheaper compared to aerial application here.
I would suspect that aerial spraying would make more sense if you're apart of a co-op that has a spraying op, remove the middle man that needs to make a profit to run an independent business and just roll those expenses into the co-op.
I'm just spit balling here though, I've always been interested in the logistics(well, modern farming as a business in general - my family hasn't really been farmers, but they've had some close ties to some, so I've kind of gotten to observe farming from arms length so to speak), but I'm out of my element here
Field conditions dont effect the aerial applicators. They can fly on the fungicides when the fields are too wet for this ground rig.

“Mess up pollination” ? Do you know how pollinating works? How could you possibly mess it up? Do you think the corn needs to be pollinated?

The pollination is already complete at this point. Although it stirs up allot of pollen so I would think it would help pollinate more if the pollination was not complete. Pollination is getting the pollen from the tassel to the corn war silks which produce the kernels of corn. They are spraying the tall corn to protect the entire plant from fungus. The height and dense field cause allot of heat that helps fungus thrive. Fungus will weaken the plants and they can be blown over flat before harvest by a good wind. That makes a mess to try to harvest.
why does it say case ih miller nitro. I don't think case builds miller sprayers.

Still going strong around here for plane spraying, but it does depend on what spray too.
Planes are still used. I did a video earlier in the spring show an air plane seeding rice in California.
Juan at the Blancolirio channel has some great content on that same rice seeding too, a different perspective since he's looking at it through the view of a pilot(aviation channel - he's a former AF pilot and is an airline pilot)

Are you positive that corn is 12' tall? That would make the machine at least 15' tall, making road transport really difficult.
Also, Miller's own literature says ground clearance is 6' and he's not bending those plants at half their height.
The height of the machine is adjustable from the cab, maybe they put oversized tires on it, but does it really matter if it’s 12 feet? Or 10 or 13? Wtf does it matter. Nit picky Murphy should be your name.

@@jaxturner7288 if you cut drainage in spring and they wash out from heavy rains, then yes could have ditches.
I'm sure the farmer knows best. Just don't think I could bring myself to tear down that much corn for a fungicide applacation. If the land laid long and wide maybe. To much turning and running down the turn rows per acer for my liking.
It really has minimal impact. The advantage is going out and spraying on your time line. The fungicide makes a significant difference right as the ears are going on. The turns are minimal. The herbicide pass already knocked out the turns back in April. I think it works out well.
I would be shocked if the amount of damaged crop reached even close to 1% - it really is positively minimal

Why wait until the corn is that tall to spray? Are they waiting for it to tassel out? I would have paid for a plane, not only does that flatten corn but it knocks a lot of pollen onto the ground.
Better product coverage. This sprayer is probably spraying 15-25 gallons an acre, and all of that is being adhered to the plant. When they use a plane you’re lucky to get 5 gallons an acre
Also cost of application.
The effects of the sprayer physically contacting the crop are positively minimal - I'm not sure where everyone got this idea that crops like corn are fragile, but they're pretty hardy durable plants. It's not like mother nature isn't capable of abusing them as much as humans can; 60+MPH winds, droughts/flooding, etc., these crops HAVE to be tough
