AVERAGE speed was over 190mph and, considering the way they look in the turns there was plenty of coasting there. That means that the top speed was easily above the 200mph mark.
Love how the commentators paint a clear enough picture of the action that you can just listen and know what is going on
That's cause they all got their start in traditional radio, unlike today's sports broadcast commentary, they tried to tell a story and paint a picture, today they just yell and scream randomly and never describe anything.

Yeah, I was being sarcastic. Playoffs?! It is winning this week's race that matters. My interest began to wane the year they introduced it. Then came stage racing. Pandering to fair-weather fans had the opposite effect than the one NASCAR thought it would. I tried but couldn't stay with it. The excitement and intensity races had, around the time Earnhardt was killed, will never return.@@camdog2520

First I want to say, Rest in Peace John Andretti. Long time NASCAR Winston Cup driver John Andretti passed away after a 2 year battle with colon cancer. You were a great, clean, and fair racer and a great, polite, and just all around, great guy! Please keep the Andretti family in your prayers NASCAR fans.
Ok so, the grey ghost at Daytona in 1980. This was Buddy's most proud win. You can guarantee that, after Buddy Baker joined CBS and he joined Ken Squire and Ned Jarrett to call the races and the Daytona 500 every year on CBS, Buddy Baker would always bring up his win in 1980 and it was the fastest Daytona 500 run. And after the implementation of the restrictor plates, if the Daytona 500 had a 3rd caution flag, Buddy would always say, that caution right there should solidify my race winning record for at least 1 more year. LoL Also, RIP Buddy. You were the gentle giant, great racer, great commentator, and a great and kind person. We miss you!

This was a beautiful race to watch. The car bodies are beautiful, the race style is a forgotten gem, enjoyable, not predictable, the sound is amazing. Daytona looked and felt more like Darlington stylistically with the pace and design motifs.
Bring this back.

Yeah, so true. I also like how they didn't zoom in on the action so much. I hate how Fox zooms in on stuff so much that you can't really see what's going on overall. They do the same damn thing in other sports. I have no idea what's going on half the time unless the commentators say somthing. I sometimes think I'd be better off listening to the radio

60s-70s was the best
I always find amusing how old nascar cars resembled family saloons and regular stuff. It was so fun to see them lapping around that fast.
That was the appeal of stock car racing. Under the sheetmetal, they were purpose-built race cars, but they looked just like street cars, because they actually used stock body panels, real bumpers, glass windshields, etc. The only major body modification was to flare the wheel openings to cover the racing tires.
They started getting away from the stock appearance with the GM10 Buicks, Pontiacs, and Oldsmobiles in 1988, when they had to stretch the body of a front-wheel drive car to fit a stock car chassis, then with the Ford Taurus in 1998, and it devolved into the mess they have now where there's no resemblance between what's on the track and what's on the road.
Unlike the ugly crap made in the 90s to today
I really like these races back in the day. These cars now and the rules to me is not racing any more. I grew up in a family of racing. These guys were true race car drivers. Thank You so much for the video.

We found the Satellite Feed version of the 1980 Daytona 500. Now we need Satellite Feeds of 1979, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1987, 1997, 1998, and 1999 (it was formerly there but it got deleted).

Used to watch John Utsman race on dirt tracks every week. He was a friend of my grandfather and great uncle (who had a tire store across from Utsman's race shop). I used to pester him all the time by going to see his dirt track car, when I was little. Had no idea until seeing this video that he drove in NASCAR.
I like the commentary, they drift out, you get to hear the cars without the chatter, then they come back in having a chat between themselves, The haircuts, the quality of the filming... Great! thanks for the post!
Love that old camera position on turn 4 where you can see the cars speed and bounce out of the turn.
That guy had brass balls. Nobody wanted that job. Finally they got a guy to say he's do it. There was nothing to protect him. If cars wrecked there he could get killed. They gave him a helmet.
I also think it was more of a treat to see the races back then, as we weren't bombarded by 24hr/365 days by shows, regurgitating the same "stories" all week. The drivers today just don't have the personalities and fire of the old days, although we are told they do
The old adage in entertainment is: _Keep them wanting more!_ Which, back in the 1980s, that's the way it was with NASCAR.
But, by the 21st century, NASCAR felt justified to 'force-feed' the public with inundating the public with content; where it may have had a negative effect with its popularity.

I love the background radio chatter and tones and bells you can hear. These old races really do it for me.
Took many years, but Buddy Baker got it. And at a race record of 177.602 MPH in the gray ghost.
If the ignition hadn't fouled up in 79 he would've won that one too, that car was probably faster than this one. That last lap fight would never have happened.

When Dale's Daytona 500 curse really began. He was only guy who could run with Buddy that day.
Pretty fitting then because this was the race that Buddy Baker's own 20 years of bad luck at Daytona ended. Buddy Baker always ran really good at Daytona and Talladega but just could never seal the deal at the Daytona 500 until this race.
I think he was just hanging on. How many times did you see him pass Baker? Two cars would've had to gang up on him to get by. That would've worked. Other than that forget it.
@2:54:33 Baker gets psyched out as he is beaten into the pits by Earnhardt as the duo make their final stop. In "Waddell Wilson - Men Behind the Wrenches" both Baker and Wilson recall that stop. Wilson knew that one can of gas was just barely going to get them to the finish and recalled leaning into the window and telling Baker not to go until all the gas was in. Baker described himself as being like "a caged animal" just itching to drop the clutch. He leaves early. As it turned out Baker ran out of fuel at the flag.
He had ahold of his driver's suit.

It was absolutely ridiculous how good that 28 car was in the bottom of the track and was able to stay wide open, when everyone else's cars were sliding up the track and having to lift. That #28 Ranier Racing Grey Ghost was bad ass in this race. As long as Buddy didn't have any issues in this race, then nobody was going to beat that 28 car.
Same thing in 79 should've won it 2 years in a row with that car.

As hard as buddy stood on that engine, he was lucky it held up. I always liked smokeys advice stay with the guys but wait until last 50 laps to race. Save ur equipment.
@@topmech71 They had the fastest car the next year too when they went to the smaller cars. Waddell Wilson liked the Pontiac LeMans which no one was running. NASCAR didn't even have templates for it even though it was on their list of approved bodies. Bobby Allison was the driver and they dominated leading 117 laps. The last pit stop they put on two tires. Petty only took a can of fuel and took the lead. Allison couldn't catch him.

I fell in love with the sport watching this style of racing, which I suppose is why I find it difficult to be entertained by the demolition derby style of pack racing that exists today. I stumbled onto this post because I logged on to see the highlights (lowlights?) of the 2020 Clash. I shook my head at the seemingly endless crash-filled attempts of a green-white checkers. I watched the 12 minutes of Clash coverage on YT and that was more than enough for me. Then I put this on and wished I could see every race from 1980. That championship battle between Cale and Dale that year was a good one.
I totally agree with you I use to be a HUGE NASCAR fan back in the 70s and 80s. The racing as pure, real, and honest. But todays NASCAR racing is no more than a joke. The Daytona 500 shoud be 500 miles. No more, no less. (Well...less if it rains and they have to call it off). But that's the ONLY reason for any kind 0f change in the distance. This whole green white checker business is down right stupid. Yeah we wanna see a green flag finish if possible. But not at the expense of wrecking a bunch of cars and maybe someone getting badly injured or even killed. I think today's NASCAR management has a lot of re thinking to do. But I doubt they'll ever do it because they are more concerned with money than they are with racing.

I just watched this today. I started to become a NASCAR fan in 1986 so I had never seen this race. After watching it, a couple observations and thoughts: 1. Amazing that about 80 cars tried to qualify for the race. Of the 42 in the race, 22 were Oldsmobiles. 2. Those cars still looked stock and didn't look aerodynamic at all. So I guess what they lacked in aerodynamics they made up in horsepower. 3. The frontstretch grandstands are so small compared to today. 4. No pack racing so cars were spread out. No crash that wiped out several cars. 5. A lot of cars had little to no sponsorship on them. 6. Even though it was only his 2nd year in NASCAR, Earnhardt was great driving from 32nd at the start to the lead. He had just signed a 5 year contract with Osterland that paid him 6 figures annually. 7. No speed limit on pit row so it seemed strange to see cars flying though the pits. 8. No commercials but when they went to commercials the cameras stayed on the track and the announcer's mikes were open. During those times, Ken Squier the lead announcer was practically directing the broadcast! Looking forward to watching more in preparation for the 500 in about a week!!!

Fun fact: the same two cars are on the front row for this 500 as there was the year prior (1979). The next time this would occur would be 1995-1996 with the #3 GM Goodwrench and #28 Texaco Havoline cars. The 28 cars had different drivers both years, Dale Jarrett in 95 and Ernie Irvan in 96.

A lot of people requesting the 2005 Daytona 500. It’s crazy to me & quite frankly I would love to see it, but if it were to happen, it’ll most likely be produced in 4:3 & not 16:9. Which sucks but it is what it is 🤷🏻♂️

One thing to note. The voice-over parts from legendary CBS Sports voice-over man Don Robertson were, for some reason, left out, likely because of sponsorship (and possible broadcast company) concerns. He did one at the very beginning of the broadcast, one at the very end of the broadcast, and one around the midway point of the race (the one for the midway part of the 1980 race came just after the green flag came back out following the caution for the Marcis/Yarborough incident).
So, I wonder if the voice overs occured post satellite feed? That is to say, they were not left out of this feed intentionally, but simply had not been inserted yet. We are watching the raw feed from the track and the voice overs were inserted at final production after re-transmission from New York. So the voice overs, just like the commercials would be inserted over this feed.

People say the racing now is BETTER, closer finishes, maybe, but the Old Races like this were better. The cars look more like cars, the drivers were not a bunch of young kids, these drivers had EARNED these rides over years not months. I also think the commentators were more descriptive, was like "Watching" Radio.
You'll never hear that again in NASCAR "22 Olds, 6 buicks, 4 Mercs , 7 Chevys, 2 Dodges and 1 Ford" .

*IMPORTANT INFO before the 1980 DAYTONA 500 (2 of 31):*
· Several top drivers ran into trouble in the Western 500km race in Riverside. Bonnett (34th), Parsons (33rd), Yarborough (23rd) and Bobby Allison (18th) all failed to complete 90% of the distance due to a variety of problems. The race itself was mostly a duel between Cale Yarborough and Darrell Waltrip, which went for the #88 after the #11 ran into mechanical trouble. Behind DW, it was Earnhardt, Richad Petty, Millikan and Bill Schmitt in the top5 with Childress, Labonte, Bill and Don Whittington and Ronnie Thomas completing the top10.
· The 50-mile Clash included 12 cars. The safety car never showed up and Dale Earnhardt narrowly outclassed Neil Bonnett.
· Buddy Baker won the pole position for the Daytona 500 for the 2nd year in a row, this time at a bit over 194mph, with Donnie Allison also getting in the front row.
· The 1st Duel was marked by several crashes while the 2nd one only had one multi-car accident. The races themselves were won by Neil Bonnett and Donnie Allison respectively.
· Several then-current and future famous names failed to qualify for the Daytona 500 including Sterling Marlin, Lake Speed and Kyle Petty.

Interesting that they were still running 1974 Mercury Montegos as late as 1980.
Look close and they had 1977 Chevy Monte Carlo's in the race also
Everything was 1977 until 1981 when they downsized four did not have anything else available the Monte Carlo was 73 - 77 and the Laguna the outlawed which ran 73 to 76
@Marckymarc71 Cars couldn't be any older than 3 model years old each season starting with the Daytona 500. So '77 was the oldest that could be run in 1980. The Wood Brothers #21 ran a Mercury Montego until '77 then switched to a Cougar. Bobby Allison's #15 is a Ford Thunderbird.
