    On an unrelated topic: You've finally convinced me, Sam. I just bought my first OO gauge locomotive and wagons. A Hornby Peckett, and an Oxford warwell. I also took a gamble on a few Dapol wagons. Hopefully they don't derail like their egg vans.

    Jintys are some of my favourite engines. Fun fact: A Jinty appeared in The Railway series in books Percy takes the plunge and the eight famous engines. He was literally called Jinty. I’ve asked for a Jinty for my birthday. Fingers crossed I get it 🤞

    I bought this model back in October last year at the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway whilst on holiday, it quickly became my favourite tank engine in my possession as well as in general due to excellent running at all speeds, the cab detail also really looks great now I've picked it out. I have been very much wanting to pre-order the new Bachmann LMS 5XP 'Jubilee' however after continuing to see reviews of shortcomings with other Bachmann offerings - like this Bachmann LMS Class 3F Jinty - I am left very hesitant to commit to purchase. I look forward to your review on one of the Jubilees when they do eventually come out and will likely decide post-review. I noticed when you did your review of the Hornby Merchant Navy 'East Asiatic Company' that a sudden popularity uptick on Hattons website occurred and it has now subsequently sold out. Manufacturers need to take note that your reviews are having immediate market impact and need to competitively respond with their upcoming product offerings. Keep up the good work Sam!

    Hi Sam, I have a Bachmann Jinty it was a birthday present over 10 years ago it came with a midland set including 2 coaches, it has been ran for many years but now it runs very poorly and I believe this is due to a poor mechanism and lack of bearings.

    Sam - I never knew a Jinty in the '50s that ever had anything other than plain black cab detail, Bachmann do have that right. You did, of course, have the option of ex-works through greasy right through to soot-covered filthy. This is an authentic ex-works livery. Just thank goodness you don't have to welt the brake valve to free it from new paint!

    Hi Sam, I have one of these so can actually comment on my experiences!
    Picked mine up for £50 (second hand, but barely used) off Ebay. Mine is the LMS model, from the early 2000s (so no NEM pockets on mine). Can't fault much of your review but will comment that:
    - The triangular mount style couplings can be a bit annoying to fit (one of mine broke on installation), it looks like they have since been upgraded with NEM pockets.
    - My earlier version does seem to crawl a bit better then yours, not sure if the motor has changed or you've just got a poorer motor in yours.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  3 роки тому

      Thanks very much for sharing! Definitely much more like it for £50 I think. Yes the NEMs are good to see now, but very interesting that yours should be a better crawler!

    The Jinty: Basically Thomas the Tank Engine if Reginald Payne hadn't made him an E2 in the first rendition of the book illustrations and confused everyone.
    For context, Awdry wanted Thomas to be a J50, but Payne used a southern railway engine for reference instead, yet he ironically made certain features like the funnel and boiler more Jinty-like than E2-like.
    I would have gone for a shortened Jinty with a few small changes.

    Recently I was tossing up between getting this engine or the Midland 1F - glad I went with the midland! Similar look, much better detail, turned bearings, a better quality 3pole motor that runs smoothly, a super detailed cab and even a better price. It’s a brilliant model compared to this. You were absolutely right - Bachmann themselves can do better.

    It's funny how for this year, we're seeing the best and worst Bachmann has to offer. It's almost difficult to believe that the same company that made this Jinty is the same as the one that made the 1P and the 94XX. If only they can update the old models like the Jinty to their new standards, and actually justify the high prices they keep giving these models.

    I love Jinty engines I have three two old one new all are Hornby’s . I will not purchase the one from Bachman even though it looks good but the price is to high and after watching your review The way it is made it is not worth it. Sam again you have saved me money by showing what they are like.

    A very nice discount.
    I've got an old hornby one, haven't run it in ages because I haven't DCC'd it yet, but I'll be sure to run it next time I'm in the loft. The closest I've got is the bachmann 57xx/8750s, I have a br black one and a LT one, very nice models although not the newest or best (one has an 8-pin socket, the other I hard wired a chip into because its PCB didn't have a socket on).
    Don't know why, I just love locos with the BRITISH RAILWAYS lettering. Like my Tornado in apple green, my new terrier in ex-SR green (I'm tempted by the black version just released), and of course my exchange trials liveried light pacific 34006 Bude.
    I really hate how bachmann still produce models from 10-15 years ago (or more) with the latest DCC interface and the new style box as the only upgrades, and slap a modern price tag on. People say you get more detail from modern stock and you get what you pay for, but as you know, bachmann go against that trend. For any locomotive above £100, we deserve a 5-pole motor and proper bearings. And for a tank loco above that, we deserve a flywheel and fully painted cab too. And why can't we have etched works plates, like GWR/LNWR numberplates and nameplates?

    It would be nice for Bachmann to have an equivalent of the Hornby Railroad range. It would really help people to understand better what they are buying. Like with the Jinty, it's fine to have an old tooling on the market but just needs to be clearer. A little bit of transparency might actually go a long way to help sales as I'm certainly hesitant to buy something from them when I don't know what standard to expect whereas if I have more confidence I'll buy more. They did used to have a Blue Riband sub-brand similar to Hornby's old Super Detail range. Granted you have to re-baseline and re-market every few years.

    The lack of concurrency is what keeps models like this on the market, aka lack of anything better! I have a BR lined black from the previous release ( DCC ready but not sound ready ), brought it used, no box, for 37,50 in 2018 + 3.50 for a brass "upgrade set" from Comet Models do to the loco was missing a few parts! No issues so far. But i do have the Hornby too (witch is getting noisy) + a kit built, heavily weathered, static, scrapyard Jinty.

    lack of decoration on a BR Black loco who would have thought it! But yes the cab details ought to be painted,

    The problem is BR black is a basic livery in my opinion so Bachmann should bring the price down. Brilliant as always mate 🙂

      @SamsTrains  3 роки тому

      Yeah it's very basic, and therefore cheap! This model was cheap, but not because Bachmann made it so... their RRP was still super high for this! :O
      Thanks for watching, Sam :)

    Hey Sam great video a lot of people actually depict Thomas as a Jinty but I have a quick question
    Who made your ocean wagons you use a lot the little trucks that say ocean on them your Pepsi wagon and your Kit Kat wagon I’d love to get them one day but I’m not sure who the manufacturer of them is do you perhaps know ?

      I have often said this, surely it would pay manufacturers to see Sams reviews and tests of their products it would save them a lot of embarrassment, refunds and repairs, when will common sense show its face, but while they keep selling them and we're daft enough to buy nothing will change.

      Some do, but in many modelling circles sam is disliked. Some manufacturers feel a lot of his reviews can be biased and often inconsistent. Some of his points are very good, but if you look in rmweb, many seasoned modellers and manufacturers aren’t fans of him

    Hi Sam. I'm a little conflicted: The cab detail is underwhelming and some of the other detail seemed to show flashing that should have been removed. As you said, the price is a bit high (thank you, Bachmann). However, if not already covered by what I have said, perhaps the lack of detail is as you mentioned, down to prototype. Making comparisons to the Peckett and the Terrier seems a little like comparing apples and oranges. Yes, the mechanism sucks (thanks, again, Bachmann). Was it fair to test the crawl of the Hornby Jinty pulling a load?
