  • I put two of my laptops head to head against each other to see which ones battery lasts longer. One laptop is a 16" Lenovo Thinkpad P1 Gen 4, and the other is a 16" M1 Max Macbook Pro.
    Lenovo specs:
    16" Thinkpad P1 Gen 4
    i7 11850H with 8 cores
    32 GB RAM
    1TB SSD
    RTX 3070 GPU
    90 watt hour battery
    Macbook specs:
    16" M1 Max Macbook Pro
8 Performance cores, 2 efficiency cores
    32 GB RAM
    1TB SSD
    100 watt hour battery

This is a test that I shamelessly stole from Alex Ziskind. Go check out his video comparing 4 different Macbooks!

Nice test, and good realistic comparison. Results are pretty much expected:)

Ya, poor windows laptops don’t stand a chance.
Thanks for watching, and letting me steal the video idea!

Good video. I'd like to see a performance comparison between this two laptops.

What I found shocking was when I had two T450s, 16GB RAM, SATA SSDs, one with Windows 10, one with Kubuntu. Same battery. With Windows 10 the machine would get a little over an hour. With Kubuntu, it would get significantly more. If I refrained from running CPU heavy software (e.g. if I was just coding in nvim), then it would get around 4hrs on the same battery that Windows drained in little over 1hr. With windows, when 'idling', it's so far from idling. Windows is kind of like a car set to tick over at 3000rpm while powering a ton of built-in appliances that you don't need.

Haha, ya that’s one of the things I’ve noticed with the MacBook, it ACTUALLY just sits idle.
We joke at work because sometimes the fans spin up on a windows laptop while we’re just sitting in a meeting room not using it. We’re like “this laptop is firing up to launch to space”

Wow, both drained pretty quickly for what you'd call a realistic load for a developer. I'm constantly disappointed by all of my laptops' batteries (it never improves as I buy newer ones every now and then) but at least I still get 3 hours out of my T14 with a 48Wh battery. (Instead of the 6 or 9 promised ;) ) less than that with 90-100Wh batteries... How is the health of those? What was their actual capacity as opposed to the design capacity?

I'm not even sure how to check the actual vs design capacity, but neither of the laptops were very old in that test.
I use the macbook still, and it actually has a pretty good battery life. I'd actually say that test was a lot more harsh than a "normal" day as a developer. I rarely even worry about the battery going dead on me, which isn't the case for the Lenovo. It's always dying lol.

my old laptop with 57wh battery works 6-7 hours in browser and other light load. Of course i can drain it in 1.5 hours under heavy load

    Thanks!
What about arch linux on the Thinkpad with auto-cpufreq configured?

Not sure if that would last longer, I don't have much experience using linux as my everyday OS. I've only dabbled with Linux on that laptop, but not Arch.

Как можно сравнивать 2 ноутбука на разных архитектурах процессоров ? У одного apm у другого x84??
