I recently learned how to fry scream, and I was always wondering why my fry screams sound so much different than most other vocalists... Turns out I learned how to do a pitched fry scream by accident😅 Probably because I tried to cover Linkin Park songs while learning to scream
Just wanted to let people know there's no such thing as pitched fry screams. It's either a fry scream, or a hybrid scream. You can have some singing, and then proceed to Compress to make the false chords vibrate, but you can't sing and then somehow close the true vocal folds to sing scream, that just not how it works. But it makes sense to listen to linkin park and try and scream like that, being able to hybrid scream with false chords
Can I just say 🙋🏻♀️ I'm not even trying to learn how to scream sing, I literally only clicked on this video because Chester Bennington was in the title and I was curious, and now I discovered that there exists a metal screaming training and channel and community of people working toward this skill. That's amazing! I'm so tickled by that concept that I subscribed. 😂 Still not going to try to metal scream sing, but I enjoy listening to metal music, so this is kind of a "behind the scenes" peek for me. Great work, Riff Shop!

Pitched screams are the best and the most emotionally versatile technique. Also the most natural kind of scream imo. Pretty much what baby’s do all on their own.
Everything you said is correct. I could tell you're the real deal. Thankfully I have pitchless screams down already. But Chester type screams are indeed advanced!
I've been trying to learn this for months and thanks to this video I learned how to not only fry scream correctly but also be able to scream an entire LP song (Given Up) all the way through almost perfectly In like 7 minutes. FUCKING THANKS MAN! This was a MASSIVE help.
If you just "go for it" there's a high chance you'll only hurt yourself, it's brutal sounding but the control over it is super precise and delicate. I highly highly doubt you can just rip one out like Chester without working for it, and assuming he was just naturally talented takes away the effort and energy he probably put in to get that good. Yes you can have a proclivity for something but being that good requires finesse
I got guttural screams/growls down in a matter of hours and kept wondering why I couldn't manage to sound like so many alt/core vocalists. After almost a year of not understanding how false/fry screams really worked, I watched a video about a month ago describing Chester's screaming style and talking about how it's some of the best fry screaming out there, and I just started dicking around with my voice and throat while singing LP songs, usually blowing my voice out from doing it wrong. Suddenly, about 2 weeks ago, it just clicked. I hit a nasty fry scream while singing along to Crawling and had a major "oh shit" moment when I realized I wasn't losing my voice from it 😂 it's so easy to hit fries wrong and end up blowing your cords out, and that's what I was used to. It's so satisfying doing fries now, and it appears I've already been doing pitched fry this whole time, because I match Chester beat for beat on most songs! Dude was a beast with his breath control, though, and that's what I'm working on now.
You can. Creating overtones with false chords is possible. If you’re familiar with Alex terrible, that’s one of the reason how he can get so stupidly low.
for an example of false cord with pitch, look at the opening line of "i miss the misery" by halestorm or, any gritty metallica line, or even do a mr krabbs voice. all of these are examples of false cord with pitch. 🤘 just sing a note, or "talk" a note, and bring some grit on it from your false cords.
In my opinion tbe voice with the scream is how it should be as standard. It feels like the natural progression from a basic fry scream. Like the eventuality.

I don’t think so. Chester has ever so subtle pitch where as Sam’s scream is a 5050 with pitch and distortion. I would say it might be a bit more closer to Austin Carlile’s technique.

This isn’t true, any sound has harmonics but that doesn’t mean there is a defined pitch, the snare drum as well as screams are considered pitch less instruments, you can hear them getting higher and lower sure but that’s more of a trick of the ears then a note changing
