    In addition to being a bp breeder, Bob Crupi also was a great fisherman and a trophy bass icon. RIP 🙏

    Thank you guys for all your work! How long do you expect until we will see fire, lace, and cypress??? Thanks again you guys rock!

      Thanks for the kind words! And, I wish I could tell you a good guess…but every new test development is its own journey. Some are much easier and faster than others! But we are working on Fire, Lace, and Cypress right now…so hopefully not too much longer. But, we shall see!

    Great episode. I love that you put all the info on a chart. It makes it so easy to screenshot it & refer back to the info whenever I want to. One question, and I guess it's really gonna be up to others in the industry working on these projects. Are we going to be renaming Black Axanthic as TSK or still keeping the name Black Axanthic, since they were bred from a specific line that originally started out darker? Just curious on your thoughts and the thoughts of others in these projects. (Same would go for GCR/MJ)

      Thanks Donato, glad you dig the chart! As for your question, we too feel like that is up to the community. So far it seems like we are keeping the different names and for testing we will call them things like TSK/BLK Ax test. Then if people have been keeping one lineage or the other, they can keep calling it that, but when people test they will be able to know that they are from the same mutation. It seems like that is what people like the most so far…but we shall see!

    Time line for: pastel, vanilla, calico?

    • @raregeneticsinc
      @raregeneticsinc  2 місяці тому +1

      We are working on all three! I wish I could tell you a timeline…but some clean up and are great tests quickly, and others take several iterations to finally get working well. So, it could be in the next month or two, or it could still be over six months if we have to keep doing additional sequencing and analysis. So cross your fingers and toes for us!

    25:56 Can you have homozygous A and homozygous B in the same animal? If so, it should pass down het A and het B to all offspring making all visuals. Am I correct with this thinking?

    • @raregeneticsinc
      @raregeneticsinc  2 місяці тому

      Unfortunately you can’t have HOM for both in one animal. That would be like having a super Mojave super lesser in the same animal. You can only have 2 copies.
      If you used CRISPR to put both mutations on both chromosomes in one animal, the HOM for both you talked about above, this engineered animal would still only make hets of bred to a normal. It would be het for both on one chromosome, not on both chromosomes. If you watch our “Back to School” episodes that might help make more sense of this. One has to think of each chromosome as being a package of genetic information and different genes that are near one another almost always get passed together.

    Yeah, the terms gene and locus do not really make sense when one looks close at the coding or locations.
    I suggest metrol (metabolic role) because any DNA coding string endures minor changes , each a mutation , without necessarily changing function.
    A dna strip, effectuates some function... coding for a single protein (or multiple related proteins) that fulfills some role in development ,,but locations on chromosomes shifts as well. What is important for the creature is that the active DNA strips they inherit , fulfil the metabolic role well enough. Whether those are identical competing alleles , slightly modified alleles , or whether that coding gets shifted to a different chromosome. To insert a metrol to a genome introduces some new aspect to development.
    So yeah , agreed , the term gene doesn't really specify anything in particular. 👍

    Did you try using mouth swaps for the DNS tests?

    • @raregeneticsinc
      @raregeneticsinc  2 місяці тому +2

      Some mouth swabbing has been attempted and it can work, but that doesn’t seem to be the best source of DNA sampling for ball pythons.

      So I have tested the eggshell as well and that does work. But again, like Ben said you have to be careful about cross contamination when your cutting and getting the blood or fluid from inside the eggs on your hands or scissors.

    I hate the misuse of the words gene! If everyone can watch this and start saying mutations instead of genes. And stop saying dumb shit like "genes on the same allele" i would be sooo happy! Haha. Loooooove this!! You nailed it!!!
