Honda is amazing, they have stuck with the flawed front wheel drive setup and are now pumping out over 300bhp but somehow it still works, and better than many of the purpose built sports cars.
"flawed front wheel drive" It's the most practical(most space in the car) easiest to service, cheapest and most fuel effective. But sure let's go with "flawed", RWD would be better for a road car? i beg to differ. The civic is not a race car hence front wheel drive is fine, optional AWD(since the Focus RS has it too) would be nice I agree, but converting it to a RWD would be stupid
+///AMG Berg True... the 45AMG is a pretty amazing car, one of the few automakers who an do a turbo 4 CORRECTLY with freaking top end power! But we're also talking about a vehicle that's 10K more on the base AMG model and 15K more with some of the extra AMG suspension parts and exhaust. 20K more if you fully load it. Being 50% more expensive it needs to be a better car.
vivalaphill Just like an Audi S3 or Golf R, so what? It's a hideous looking car to begin with, so the quad exhaust just adds to the repulsive, mad styling. Cheers
vivalaphill Downforce? Is a FWD car! why do you need extra weight (downforce) in the rear if the front is making all the traction, stability maybe, still it looks like factory RICE to me.
As the great Chris Harris put very well "If I owned a new Civic Type R and someone said: "that car REALLY suits you." Yes, I'd find that difficult to handle." Enough said.
Alfred Munkenbeck If I owned one jacket it wouldn't have stripes on it, yes. But when I look back at my car I want to see something fun. I understand the social implications of owning what some people would probably call ridiculous. I say fuck 'em.
Do we miss the high revving NA motors? Yes, most of us do; we also miss the light weight bodies that held them. This thing is massive for a civic, FFS it has factory 19s.
Get an 8th gen si and tune it man youll get yourself easily 230 whp of pure NA high revving light car fun. If your willing to put more than 2 grand in the car you can achieve up to 280 whp without turbos... That means cams etc lel
RaphaelleMorin No doubt Honda could have easily got 300hp out an N/A motor. But it probably wouldn't meet emissions laws. This is what's ruining the car industry, laws.
***** But an N/A 300hp motor would be too peaky and it would be unusable on the road. A high revving N/A engine might be fun, but to get proper power and torque from a small displacement engine you need forced induction. But the international laws have a big role on emissions too, of course.
***** I agree, but I'm feeling as though we've lost many great N/A engines due to laws. It would have been interesting and unique to see Honda stick with an N/A motor. They've always lacked torque, but maybe introducing a bigger displacement 4 cylinder would have done the job. Although I'm not sure what kind of complications they would run into making a 2.8 - 3.0 4 cylinder. Haven't ever seen it done before and probably for good reason.
boy638 The interior at least looks very comfortable, and the Honda history of good interiors helps reassure. I would say the suspension would be the only everyday car complaint but it doesn't even look that hard. Coil-overs would be a much tougher ride.
boy638 Another review states that this new Type R has a great ride. I hope this thing sells like crazy in the US edit: and by "great ride" I mean that the ride comfort is apparently excellent
***** not really power more like handling and engineering which really impressed me with their time in the Nurburgring. It's a faster lap time then the subaru sti!! Honda really made a very impressive like FWD sports car!
That's incredible... I'm from switzerland and here the new Type r costs 36'000 CHF (34'550 usd) and the new STI costs 42'000 CHF (44'990 usd) Also other cars like golf r starts with 50'000 CHF, thats 55'000 usd for a car that is not the best for engine quality... Here Honda are cheap but better than many cars, is like the gtr... A car not that expensive that goes more than cars 3 times the price :D
Tyler Dowd Its faster around a track than cars that cost over 350k, and you're complaining ...? Also its WAY faster around a track than a STI.. lol..so.. yeah
Cars aren't much fun when they are sitting on the side of the road broken. This is why Honda's are amazing. Fantastic quality and reliability, and it's been like this since they started. That is the reason I am a Honda fanboy. Honestl the looks of this car are radical, sure to be a collector in a few years when others catch up. It would look better in black, that is for sure. Now bring this to the U.S. PLEASE!
IDK, if you drive it you'd probably be able to overlook the gaudy outside. The driver said it had 2 less wheels to worry about than the Focus RS, but I prefer AWD in a small car with big power to help keep it where you point it! I guess we'll see how sales go and how many aftermarket power boost parts become available within the year or next.
Its a Honda. Hondas typically get a HUGE aftermarket support from many brands/companies for their cars like the Type R's and Odyssey to scooters and bikes like The Ruckus and CBR.
They have set ups that compensate for that. And it's not as dramatic as you imply. Awd is simply better than fwd and rwd. It's not perfect, but neither are the other two options, in fact far from it. Now that they have awd figured out more there is less and less of a reason not to have it. Awd sports cars still have grip for snow and limited unpaved driving, and others can go full rally. Some like the a45 I believe, use a fwd biased system that helps with take off with awd. A hybrid done right could use the battery for the back wheels when needed. There is so much more you can do with it.
tavi921 lol yeah, as much as i like it, i think honda kinda held back a little too much. An angry prius...actually an apt description. :D EDIT: it honestly sounds like one too. Oh dear...
Intel Core i7 4710HQ GeForce GTX860M 4GB GDDR5 really was hoping for a double high flow fart cans on it, seeing how distastefully people "mod" hondas to begin with.
Honestly, I would've loved this in my teen years (and I'm only 23 now) but this is a little much. It's just over the top. I appreciate an over the top car, but I don't think many besides serious Honda enthusiasts are going to look at that seriously. Sure the numbers are nice but at the end of the day... just look at the back. I even think the Si is getting a little out there looking and I cross shopped one against the Mk7 GTI I now own. I'm sure it's a wonderful car, but when you get up to this price bracket and place it against things like the Golf R, that styling is very hard to swallow. Getting rid of the spoiler would be a great start. Also, the complaints against the quad exhaust because it's a four I don't agree with. The WRX, the STI, and the Golf R to name a few all have quad exhausts in their current iterations and they all look appropriate. I think the quad exhaust on this Type R, of all the things on it, is one of the least egregious.
Nick Catelli Not to mention that the added exhaust pipes may not be technically necessary for a flat four but they do up performance slightly. Moreover it sort of caters to anyone wanting to boost their car, more air coming in needs more space to leave.
I agree. Don't get me wrong, I love it but it's too obnoxious(?) to be seen in one. Hope the North American type-R will be less extreme. If not, I'll stick to my original plan and pre-order a Focus RS.
I fear that fans who grew up with the Type R are going to be the main target market - unfortunately now in my late 20's the thing now looks absolutely ridiculous. If this was a little more subtle like the FN2 was then id be all over it but the aero is just pathetic.
***** Each to his own, I'm older than you and I love the new models' looks (and specifications). I drive a stripped out and tuned -02 Type-R that probably beats the new one performance wise, but it's still a tempting car.
Love the 16 civic sports back like uh.. this one 4.bp.blogspot.com/-V7gtin0_-4g/VR1jRuI3tCI/AAAAAAAATdQ/1nWROFl91uQ/s1600/Civic_Concept_rear%2B3-4.jpg But yeah, in this case I don't really like the rear :/
Serrated Frost the tailights and the rear lip bro :(. Then again im just a salty integra fanboy angry at honda. I know people have boosted civics but ls boosted tegs have been the ultimate sleeper
Jay Hoff Cough Cough Fanboy much? "big rear wing pushing down on the back wheels in a front wheel drive car..........." looks like fast and furious and hot wheels got together and had a kid, the result is an over done "racecar" by honda
ferretkiller9454 Definitely not a "fan boy", more of an Italian guy myself, especially old Alfa. And before you start going off about the big wing, and what not, you need to go educate yourself on what the wing actually does.
+Marta Rivera I like the engine but that's bout it. The body looks like a piece of shit and is ugly as hell, i wouldn't own one if someone gave it to me.
+Mike Litoris hard not to like the chassis, brakes and suspension. it has a great reputation at the Nurburgring and beats alot of much more expensive vehicles.
silverbackdp you must be some kind of stupid if for a SINGLE second you think Hondas are unreliable. My family owns a 2002 Audi A4 quattro sport with 28k miles. also an 94 honda accord sedan with 200k miles and i can tell you the audi with only 28k miles has been in the shop WAYYYY more than the honda
silverbackdp wait, are you talking about a HONDA? Honda, as in the Japanese** Car Company? Honda. They are some of the best build cars out there. Once more, H-O-N-D-A
the first 1ft of body from the ground up has a lot of similarities to the gtr. you can see it in the back the exhaust setup makes it very clear and in the front you can see slight similarities too.
7:50 around Nurburgring is insane and cant believe this car put that time in but cant wait to drive one. I was thinking a Golf Type R this year for myself but this Civic is making me reconsider.
Oh stop hyping this cars Nurburgring time so much, it's not like Honda fanboys aren't obnoxious enough already. The time was not legit. It was a preproduction heavily modified car, it had a roll cage, a more powerful engine, fully slick tires, etc. Far more hardcore than the just 3 seconds slower, and 7 years old, Megane. Until they post a lap with a car that is exactly the same as you can buy at the dealer, their lap times are irrelevant. Not that they matter in the first place , becuase the car still wont be as good to drive as the Megane. You'll never see a Civic in the company of Ferraris, Lambos, Porsches, BMWs, etc. when a big magazine picks the best drivers car of the year. And Megane has been in such a company for years in a row.
cesar malabrigo mujica it is! The megane 3 RS is one of those cars that are so good, not even their creators could build a better one! Same with the old clio rs, designed at the pinnacle of Renault Sport!
cesar malabrigo mujica look at my channel, my newest Video includes an acceleration Run from 90 km/h to 230 kmh in my 2014 Mégane RS on the Autobahn. Compare that to the one of the Type R that was uploaded on yt a few days ago...Type R should easily walk me...should ;)
It's Honda's glorious comeback and all, but sorry, it looks fucking ridiculous. I'd rather have a Leon Cupra even if it's 35hp down, and the Focus RS will destroy it.
Logan L Yeah, sorry but the RS will destroy it, maybe not on the track with a driving god but on the road with a normal driver - more power, more grip and vastly superior suspension - plus not stupid looking. Not that this isn't mechanically a good car once you get past the ugly, but it's not anywhere near good enough for the price Honda are asking for it.
Logan L The Focus RS has proper multi-link fully independent suspension, the Civic Type R has only semi-independent torsion beam rear suspension which is easily unsettled over a rough surface and can lead to unpredictable handling - no doubt it'll be well controlled by software, but I imagine it's still going to be no match composure wise for the Focus RS on the road, and given the money they are asking for it, it's inexcusable.
Matthew Sharpe The Type R’s H-shaped torsion beam rear suspension enhances high speed stability, even in high speed corners, thanks to its contribution to maximising roll rigidity. Unlike that of the standard Civic, the Type R’s H-shaped torsion beam is made of crushed pipes rather than a solid block which improves rear roll rigidity by 177% and removes the need for a rear anti-roll bar, thus saving weight. Very high resistance trailing arm bushes also help to improve lateral rigidity. That's the short of why they chose a torsion beam. And there is a host of computer aids to sort things out further.
I would love to see this compete with the other hot hatches because even though we don't get these in the states. It would be quite interesting seeing it go against the Golf R and others.
***** There's only so much a FWD car can do to 60mph. It's pure physics. People can dream on if they think this will get below 5.5 seconds.. no diff in the world will get FWD to that speed unless the car weighs 10kg
I owned a FD-2 JDM Honda Civic Type R in Singapore. I am wondering would Kah Motors launch this model in Singapore? They have failed to to bring in the FD-2 model, instead, they bought in the FN-2 citing reason like there is no race track in Singapore but the FD-2 sold much more units than the FN-2 through parallel importers. So this time would they import this made in UK type R or I need to go through the parallel importers?
For all the people talking about the Civic's Wing and Quad pipe, the Civic is FWD but that doesn't mean that it doesn't require downforce to keep the back wheels in the ground otherwise it would skid from the back at high speed cornering and you absolutely don't want that in a FWD, plus you realize that this is a turbo car right? the quad pipe is for better airflow otherwise you would restrain the airflow of the turbo, however I wouldn't think the quad would be necessary if it would have been replaced with a single larger 3" piping, but hey, im not the engineer here, I think this new Type R looks badass and for your info Honda has never relied on Turbos before yet their naturally aspirated engines have cranked up amazing horsepower, a good example is the S2000 which produces 240HP with a 2.0 liter natural aspirated 4 cylinder engine, for me, that's Honda Engineering at it's best and I used to hate Hondas.
Not sure if I should spend my money on 2016 Honda Civic Type R or a Mitsubishi Evo XI. I have a 2006 Honda Civic but I don't want to mod it or anything since it's just my first car. I want something I know I'll use for a long time. Not sure if I should stick with Honda or move over to Mitsubishi. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Looking back at these comments saying it is ugly lmao , funny how it was love from first sight for me, imo EP3 and FN2 are ugly cars except a few specific color (silver for EP3 and Black for FN2) , this FK2 looks good with any color especially matte dark grey
I can't wait for it to come to North America. It's right at the time when I'll be able to afford this kind of car and this Civic Type R is something I'll really consider.
Looks more like a kids car now than ever before. Its important to note that the front suspension was designed specifically to mitigate torque steer. That it a lot of power going to the two front wheels.
+Luis Nieves will be around 28k in the US , mid 2016 launch date expected but under Si form and with around 60 hp less, beginning of 2017, a properCivic 10 gen CTR will be available
I personally think this kicks ass. First honda i've genuinily been excited about. My question is if the bring it out to the us will it be the same car? Hatchs dont sell nearly as well state side. Will they coupe it up or something?

COST?
silverbackdp it's faster around the nurburgring than the r34, i think thats ok
silverbackdp It's quicker than an s3 on the track, and, yeah, the s3 costs around 50k ^^
silverbackdp you must be some kind of stupid if for a SINGLE second you think Hondas are unreliable. My family owns a 2002 Audi A4 quattro sport with 28k miles. also an 94 honda accord sedan with 200k miles and i can tell you the audi with only 28k miles has been in the shop WAYYYY more than the honda
silverbackdp You are talking out your ass and accusing someone of doing the same.
silverbackdp wait, are you talking about a HONDA? Honda, as in the Japanese** Car Company? Honda. They are some of the best build cars out there.
Once more, H-O-N-D-A
Concept Car > Production Car
JamesS14101 Every. Single. Time.
The production car still looks good :)
At least Honda can make a decent engine for a roadcar.
the first 1ft of body from the ground up has a lot of similarities to the gtr. you can see it in the back the exhaust setup makes it very clear and in the front you can see slight similarities too.
Excellent review, Honda has done it, would be honored to have this on my driveway!!
make it rwd, and I'm sold.
No thanks
make it rwd and you're dead...
you'd spin out
I think you misspelled AWD
3:20.
gets passed by a van.
I bet there is a factory option for LED lights under the car. Factory RICE FTW.
looks like a volt.. are the front looks alright tho. are these available for the U.S? and how much are these cars.
7:50 around Nurburgring is insane and cant believe this car put that time in but cant wait to drive one. I was thinking a Golf Type R this year for myself but this Civic is making me reconsider.
it looks like a Rally car I like!!!
We have a fan boy over here!
derbigpr500 so, Megane is better, right?
cesar malabrigo mujica it is!
Compare that to the one of the Type R that was uploaded on yt a few days ago...Type R should easily walk me...should ;)
Uhhh you're completely wrong. Look at the press release here: world.honda.com/news/2015/4150303Civic-Type-R/.
Everything you said is bullshit.
Oh my god.
Hey your the automotive designer
how did you know that?
I'm your father
Roland Ocomen hahaha
+Armed Corpse you're*
This Honda Looks Like Honda Civic RR Mugen but its Type R? different Quality? Vtec?
What is the purpose of the rear wing if it's a fwd, it will only slow the car down and make it heavy
you probably dont know anything about cars lmao
Adds rear down force... A very good thing for cornering.
I love this car...
Who the hell approved this design? I used to draw like that! When i was five..
It's Honda's glorious comeback and all, but sorry, it looks fucking ridiculous. I'd rather have a Leon Cupra even if it's 35hp down, and the Focus RS will destroy it.
I doubt it.
Matthew Sharpe so just in acceleration? That's what you're saying? Not sure what you think is wrong with the suspension on the Type-R either.
It would be quite interesting seeing it go against the Golf R and others.
this one is the Euro Type-R, or the international version? if this is the euro type-r, then will they be producing the JDM type-r?
Give us a proper review XCAR ! ur just repeating stats in here
nuwan premarathne head to head with the Mégane RS
nuwan premarathne Nothing wrong with this review, it was very well done.
Cant wait to slam my money at the dealer if Honda bring the type R to US
Me too
+XCARFilms To see these things on the roads of the US would be heaven sent, can't wait
+King Reef Keep dreaming kid.
Look like a fucking Prius
stan0966 you need your eyes tested
"Enlightened age of hot-hatchery" is a fantastic phrase.
Didn't the adverts show the car as having the brake lights in the rear boot spoiler? Missed a trick there!
What happened to the little hot hatches, this thing is ugly af
Damn thats one ugly car. But very powerful
i see ugly ppl lol. Honda is beutiful.
+headlinerbeats wtf this is a bad ass car but to each their own lol.
***** right I forgot to say it looks like a car for children like your are =)
***** is your playstation not working or what do you want ?
+headlinerbeats DEFINITELY not a 'real' civic in my eyes. it's an acura, not a civic
The interior is awful. 5.7 0-60? I hope that's a conservative figure for 306hp. They tried it though.
***** With a purely front wheel drive car I think mid 5's is about as good as it gets - almost regardless of power.
Ian Davidson Surely I couldn't agree more. Don't believe I can go back to a FFWD as my fun car. Never know though. Cheers!
TG got it to do 5.3. It's got more left to give
***** There's only so much a FWD car can do to 60mph. It's pure physics. People can dream on if they think this will get below 5.5 seconds.. no diff in the world will get FWD to that speed unless the car weighs 10kg
steerj07 it already has gotten below 5.5 lol. It did 5.3. Read the Top Gear review
Should i get a 2016 type r or 2016 civic si?
Hey, is this 2016 Honda car can still tune? Hope it was...
One of the ugliest hatchbacks I've ever seen
it is as ugly as sin, this whole generation of civic looks terrible
I know this car is turbocharged but does it still have VTEC?
Fell in love with this car when I reviewed it recently for my Channel - Such available performance and a special feeling on each drive.
Where did this guy go?
Do they come with paddle shift ? just asking
Is the rear double wishbone suspension back??
..
will it come with the 4 door like the FD2?
Compared to s3, 1 second slower 0-60? What territority?
I drove it through the Cape several months back, just incredible performance powerhouse
Love Honda... I'm still in love with the EP3
Is then Type R coming to the us & if it is when?
how does this compare too the Fiesta St?
quick question , IS IT COMING TO THE US?!
I just love how the automotive market is getting so competitive all these beautiful cars are being designed
hey guys where were the first and last scenes shot? (where the car is on the stand). thx
I can't wait for it to come to North America. It's right at the time when I'll be able to afford this kind of car and this Civic Type R is something I'll really consider.
How does it sound though?
What exactly is electrically assisted steering?
when will this be available in the US?
Looks more like a kids car now than ever before. Its important to note that the front suspension was designed specifically to mitigate torque steer. That it a lot of power going to the two front wheels.
Is the left hand drive made in UK?
I wonder what a brz with a turbo would compare, purely comparison which would be the better "drivers car"
looks better than the base model and si but wat is the price ?
+Luis Nieves will be around 28k in the US , mid 2016 launch date expected but under Si form and with around 60 hp less, beginning of 2017, a properCivic 10 gen CTR will be available
good manuals are getting harder to find. I had a hard time finding a TSX in manual.
Excellent video. This car will definitely please once released!
I think it's gorgeous and going by most professional reviews... bloody fast!
Is it going to be sold in the US?
yeah coming 2018.
Bunnz Wick fall
Of 2017
I personally think this kicks ass. First honda i've genuinily been excited about. My question is if the bring it out to the us will it be the same car? Hatchs dont sell nearly as well state side. Will they coupe it up or something?
Does anyone know why we don't see this style civic in America?
Release date to the U.S.?
will the actual ones people buy beable to go round the ring as fast ? I have doubts
how much does it cost $?
is this the same as the 2015 one? I don't think i see any difference :S
Honestly i will miss the high rev type r engines but this motor must feel like a champ
what's the music used in first half? anyone?
