I'd say that's because it predates the game's development by several years, but looking it up it's apparently not the only track to have originated in other projects. It's just the only one not to be deeply intergrated into other tracks, though maybe that's because it was so well known already.

He could have used different parts of Megalovania in other songs instead, but not even "Song that might play when you fight Sans" contains any references to Megalovania, nor do any of the other Sans related songs or does it come back in songs like "Bring it in, Guys". I believe what the original commenter said is true, that Toby intended for the song to not be connected to anything during the normal runs because the genocide run is so different.
once saw a theory that they have the same melody in different time signatures to reflect the state of their relationship... they both want the same thing but cannot reconcile with each other on the method to get it
I think it's interesting that MEGALOVANIA is the least connected song to the other songs. I feel like that adds to MEGALOVANIA being the player's theme rather than Sans's theme
I think.. it’s genius to connect the themes like Toby did. It reveals that Asriel is not gone. It reveals that Undertale is more than just a game- it’s a story. An experience. How each character has their own thoughts and views. How they’re all connected with each other as friends and family.
I never consciously noticed these connections, but i certainly felt them. Certain musical phrases in all the songs always sounded so familiar, but with no specific thing to relate them to that i could remember, because i wasnt paying close enough attention to that stuff, they all just kind of jumbled together to form what i considered "Undertale music" in ny brain. It really brought everything together for me, because even if i couldnt consciously recognize where each motif came from, i recognized them all as just "Undertale"
i personally feel like its part of what makes undertale special still today,. every character was given a motif and based on the characters who impacted each other or ambient "world sounds" made the songs and motifs feel like conversations with who each of the characters are and how their own world shaped them. As interesting as it is that Toby planned the entire soundtrack out this way by himself I think it's infinitely more funny to think this is all just a big coincidence
@@-Teague- Toby: hmmm I think kids falling into holes and entering a whole new world full of darkners is a good idea Toby: hmmm what about another game Toby: hmm a kid falls into a hole and enters a whole new world of monsters Toby: yeah that's very different Toby: *proceeds to make the best rpg game in the entirety of gaming history*
I like to imagine toby fox either planing all this out with one big conspiracy board or him wracking his head for new song ideas and accidentally seeing one of music sheets upside down
Flipping melodies upside down is actually a legit way to compose and plenty of classical musicians have done it! I’m sure there’s even a name for this type of composing but I don’t remember.
The fact that only random bits and pieces of different songs are used for the Amalgams is so fitting and for that. It's the broken jumbled mess of all their themes put together, most chord progressions lost in the jumble, like how most lost little to all awareness of themselves.
People sometimes say Toby having a soundtrack that's basically 99% leitmotifs is lazy, but I don't think they realize how hard it is to actually have those leitmotifs play enough times where they become engrained in your memory but not too much that it becomes annoying. Every motif associates yourself with not just a character, but also an idea. Enemy Approaching associates itself with the monsters you face, then eventually to tracks like Ghost Fight, Dogsong and Temmie's tracks which become more friendly faces. Snowdin Town is friendly and inviting, so this theme makes you think of friends. You hear it on dates and you hear it with Asriel, someone who thinks you're his best friend. Ruins basically becomes the underground's secondary theme next to Once Upon A Time, almost like an anthem. It reminds you of your first introduction to it and eventually Undyne, who swore to protect and help free the underground. I could go on about how each theme being where could mean all sorts of things but that would take forever. The point is that Toby knows how to write a soundtrack that's memorable and associative.
the ruins leitmotif represents the determination of monsters ruins: the first place monsters started to live waterfall/quiet water: there we can find information about the monsters' past and their desire to go to the surface ngahhh!!/spear of justice: you are fighting the most determined monster underground an ending: just after everything is over the monsters still have the hope of seeing the sun don't give up: all underground monsters cheering you on respite/ bring it in, guys!!: your dreams and hopes have come true but the earth refused to die/ battle agaist a true hero: now the entire underground is rooting for his defeat, hoping for all the determination that a monster is capable of having
Now this is an effective use of a leitmotif. Every song in the soundtrack (minus Long Elevator, can we really say that all are connected?) has been connected. That's interesting.
Hearing His Theme being connected with Finale brought an actual tear to my eye. Asriel was there the whole time. Even if clouded by the chaos of Flowey
I don't know if you guys also feels this but whenever I hear music from Undertale or Deltarune or just any game I've played, I feel this sudden rush of nostalgia and an urge to go play the game again
the amount of love i have for these games is so big, i could not even show it to you, no matter how hard i try. this has legitimately saved my life when i needed it. undertale and deltarune are better than actual therapy for me.
It's genius that the first notes of Metal Crusher are the same than the melody from Napstablook's house, giving a hint of Mettaton's real origins. I also really like that there is some of Undyne's theme in Asgore's as he's the one that trained her.
Toby Fox is still a genius. Composing two or five complete songs, editing them 1000 times and getting 50 completely new songs out in the end. Mastermind 👁👄👁💡
Game developers: alright, let’s make 300 songs that are completely different from each other so the player can have the most varied experience! Toby: aight I made 1 song… That’s enough
Circular soundtrack: A soundtrack that can be arranged in such a way that every song is smoothly linked together with leitmotifs while hitting a majority of the songs. Source: I’ve heard this term used to describe Undertale’s soundtrack before.
This is proof that Undertale would not be the masterpiece that it is without its OST. The various leitmotifs and placements within the story really highlight and bring together the core themes, and also help function as subtle foreshadowing. Literally art.
People underapreciating the ost because the songs were reused lack the understanding that toby did this solely to familiarize us not only with his style of music but to attach a character and his/her personality to the track which is beautiful
9:55 I love this part because ASGORE's theme has everything of him. It has the determination theme. More importantly it has Toriel's theme which is just sad
Also asgores theme contains toriel's but toriel's not any part of asgore's. He still loves her and misses her more than anything. She just wants to forget.
- The last few notes of “Home” sounds just like the first few notes of the “Uwa” leitmotif - “Oh My…” sounds just like the first few notes of “Death By Glamour” Edit: And now I hear the ending notes of “It’s Showtime!” in the ending notes of “Thundersnail” Edit 2: Speeding up “Chill” by about 6 times gets you the chords of “Spooktune”
for the secound one you said: might be a coincidence, but in some other game made by an other person (that has nothing in commun with Fox's creation) , there is a soundtrack tittled as "Endlesss Breackfast" (please don't ask) that sounds just like it, after the screaming, listen and you'll notice that it's the three same notes
How to make an amazing soundtrack like Toby Fox: 1. Compose 3-5 full songs 2. Create every possible permutation of edits to the songs created in step 1 3. Sift through the terabytes of data to find about 100 really good pieces to use in the final product Bonus step: Reference or reuse a piece you made years ago, like "The Baby is You" or "Megalovania"
You know what would be super cool: a piano or orchestral arrangement that blends all the similar songs together into one giant medley that would be incredible
I love how you also added symbols to explain whats going on without saying anything. And this is one of my favorite "subtle" aspects about this game. EVERYTHING is connected in such a meta way
Video is missing the following: 006 - Uwa!! So Temperate 018 - Uwa!! So Holiday 029 - Danger Mystery 030 - Undyne 040 - Ghouliday 041 - Chill 042 - Thundersnail 052 - Uwa!! So Heats 060 - Wrong Enemy 061 - Oh! One True Love 062 - Oh! Dungeon 067 - Oh My... 069 - For the Fans 070 - Long Elevator The only two leitmotifs I can find through these are the Oh! 11:35 That's so clever! The amalgamates were the results of an experiment with the objective of breaking the barrier! Toby, you are a genius! Edit: I'm wrong, look at the first response.
Didn't go into this video expecting to cry but, man... Toby really melts these themes into your mind and then repurposes them in such a huge variety of contexts that its hard not to be overwhelmed by what you feel when you hear them.
Toby literally makes us remember the themes We can hear a couple notes of fallen down or megalovania then have the exact timing where the song was played and almost the entire song in our heads. It's amazing when you're an undertale fan, even if you think you're past the whole loving the game thing you still have a bit of it in you 💀
seeing how all the songs are connected is already cool but seeing which ones are connected is even cooler! Like how Alphys' theme is connected to the True Lab and how Asgore's theme is connected to the GAME OVER screen (you know cause he is the one talking during it) and how all the ghost's themes are connect as well

It actually makes so much sense for all the songs to be linked like this, makes every area and person in the Underground linked to each other, because they are. The soundtrack perfectly fits the entire game and it's a masterpiece
When I was listening to Asgore by itself for the first time and that little motif played, my brain went “that’s familiar”. It took me THIS LONG to realize it was from heartache, such a little touch from Toby that made it so much better!

Very high quality, and I thought I knew nearly all leitmotives connection... The one that touched me the most was the fact that Small Shock is literally a part of Undertale's chords, and that make both songs even more beautiful. However, I always intepreted Amalgam's intro as reminiscent of that of BAaTH because of notes/rhythm similarity and, well, because both Undyne and the Amalgamates melt at some point.
@@NotSomeJustinWithoutAMoustache More or less, there are still notes that appear missing or changed, but I do feel like BAaTH based its intro on Amalgam, and then Power of NEO based its intro on BAaTH. There are some other unused songs but these six are the most known (I think). It actually makes so much sense that your personal talk with Sans (Premonition) is sort of the same theme as bossfight with Flowey, because the main theme of your hangout with Sans is that Flowey is exploiting Papyrus, trying to befriend him to betray him at the end of True Pacifist route
Snowdin/Snowy and Shop. How did I not hear the conncection sooner? That's so cool! RUINS BECOMES WATERFALLL WHEN SLOWED DOWN??? WHAT!? And then also factor in that all the song links literally have meaning to connecting those characters themes together and the story itself!!! Toby you mad man. You’re ahead of your time. It’s truly a masterpiece.
you can really tell that effort was put into music when something like this happens, where despite there only being a (relatively) small selection of motifs, all the songs feel distinct! the music was why i initially fell in love with undertale, and i love seeing stuff like this

“Gonna pretend like that ISNT once upon a time.”
It mostly an amalgamation of alphys and enemy approaching, which makes sense
God loves you
People sometimes say Toby having a soundtrack that's basically 99% leitmotifs is lazy, but I don't think they realize how hard it is to actually have those leitmotifs play enough times where they become engrained in your memory but not too much that it becomes annoying.
The point is that Toby knows how to write a soundtrack that's memorable and associative.
i feel like your best friend represents the "GET THE HELL AWAY FROM ME YOU EVIL WHATEVER YOU ARE" vibe
NO ONE SAYS ITS LAZY
the ruins leitmotif represents the determination of monsters
ruins: the first place monsters started to live
waterfall/quiet water: there we can find information about the monsters' past and their desire to go to the surface
ngahhh!!/spear of justice: you are fighting the most determined monster underground
an ending: just after everything is over the monsters still have the hope of seeing the sun
don't give up: all underground monsters cheering you on
respite/ bring it in, guys!!: your dreams and hopes have come true
but the earth refused to die/ battle agaist a true hero: now the entire underground is rooting for his defeat, hoping for all the determination that a monster is capable of having

WHAT!?
Ghost Fight and Spider Dance being connected makes sense actually. Still didn't know, but I like it.
The Song that Might Play When you Fight Sans having a bit of Bonetrousle when sped up is so wholesome.
12:57 me when i turn 60 and i try to get up only to dislocate my spine in the process
It’s absolutely amazing how he connects all the songs. Truly an artist. I can already tell from chapters 1 and 2 he’s doing the same with that. He’s so talented.
And then also factor in that all the song links literally have meaning to connecting those characters themes together and the story itself!!! Toby you mad man. You’re ahead of your time. It’s truly a masterpiece.
you can really tell that effort was put into music when something like this happens, where despite there only being a (relatively) small selection of motifs, all the songs feel distinct! the music was why i initially fell in love with undertale, and i love seeing stuff like this
3:07 only now have i realised that this statue is a monument to asriel
Its incredible the effort that this guy put in this video, the editing, the slow or fast music, everything
Thanks so much!
as someone who used to be able to tell you the name of any undertale song without looking and used to listen to the ost day-in and day-out this is affirming all of the connections i already subconsciously made! cheers! great video
Thanks!

At 7:02 I was just like "no way how did I never realise that !"
I am honestly in shock. I knew it heavily relied on leitmotifs, but this? This is astounding.
Having Death by Glamour suddenly speed up at 6:17 makes it even more hype than it was before, somehow.
@@SourCandiesArt my favorite
2:34 legendary song, finale awesome
Correct! It's massively underrated
@@marvinarellano3087the start to ASGORE, a entire another song is good too
OST 071 is the main song because is is called Undertale.
Compiling a list of obscure leitmotifs that i didnt know abt despite knowing most of them
2:03 didnt know it was in Premonition
3:22 completely forgot The Choice was just extra slowed down Undertale (with His Theme)
6:40 Metal Crusher in Spooktune
9:41 Bergentruckung in But the Earth Refused to Die was something i never caught either
10:47 Never noticed Ghost Fight's bass in Dogbass either
11:24 it was so fragmented but it makes so much sense for Enemy Approaching to be part of Amalgam. it's also cool (and resourcful) for the Barrier to be used as a sound effect in it, too. (and also the fact that Alphys' theme is part of Almagam should've been obvious to me, too ._.)
12:11 is so cute! She's Playing Piano is just a snippet of Alphys' theme, aw :>
4:41 thats gotta be the smoothest transition yet
nah i changed my mind its 5:39
also anyone notice in 10:59 you can see the word "Strugtablook" below both muffet's and napstablook's description
13:05 and 13:25 are pretty good too imo

That "Amalgam" Part sounds like a extended version of the Super Mario "Time's Running Out" Theme, with Mario World Bongos.
One of my favorites that wasn’t included was the use of one of the soul leitmotifs during Your Best Nightmare in Battle Against A True Hero. The trumpet part near the end shares a leitmotif with the theme of the yellow soul, or Justice, fittingly enough.
I always kinda knew that all the songs were connected, but hearing them put together like this really puts it into a whole new light. Bravo!
