- Gayathri Mohan, previously theinkblot_g3, is an art director, model, stylist, illustrator, and general badass. She is also my best friend, and the reason I've taken up any creative endeavours. It's not a stretch to say that her work has massively shaped instagram as it is today - she hit 10k on instagram in 2017 (when 10K still meant something), and she's been creating works that are nothing short of astounding. She has been recognised and featured in publications such as Vogue, Grazia, Haarper's Bazaar, and so on. This is interview takes us through how she got started, her thoughts on Cochin's culture, and general advice on creativity.

The Kochi Documentation Project (as of now) is a series of interviews
with friends and family - I want to immortalize these molecules of Cochin’s culture in the only way I know.
I do not know where the project will go in the future, or how long it will last, but I thought it would be an injustice if our beautiful city and its culture is not documented.
We have some of the coolest, most talented artists and individuals.
Documenting everything, one person at a time.
I love how she doesn't want to rest on her laurels, and dreams way bigger for future. There's no doubt that she's gonna make it big internationally if she wants- her talent is ridiculously unique.

I really feel like Kochi is in a very nascent stage when it comes to embracing its own identity, and it’s unfortunately very easy to feel very isolated in terms of finding niche groups of people within the subcultures you’re interested in. In my opinion, it has a lot to do with hierarchical friends groups formed during one’s childhood, where more often than not such groups are hardly invested in allowing new ideas, cultures or identities to penetrate their pre-conceived notions of reality. This creates a closed loop system which hardly has any room to grow or transform into anything else than what it already is. It’s a highly frustrating process trying to ‘fit into’ Kochi culture for anyone moving here (or moving back here) because it still has miles and miles to go when it comes to being open minded; there’s no excuse for a city like this to continue to grow without any sense of direction. Hopefully things take on a new trajectory in the next 5 years since the cultural growth has been very stagnant in a relative sense
unfortunately, the heirarchies exist within adult friend groups as well. When you grow up in a small town, never having seen anything of the world, everything unknown is anxiety inducing. Having a heirarchy in your friend group allows you to feel comforatble because you know your place exactly in your circle, and you know everyone else's place. So there's nothing of the unknown there. I think until people here become a little more self aware and worldly, its going to stay that way. I've had the good fortune of meeting so many people that have broken away from this idea. Culturally, i would say that Kochi has grown a lot from what it was in 2018-19, when i was here last. people are much more accepting and indulgent in art and exploration. Of course, the every place has it's small minded people, but i hope in the next decade those will be outnumbered.

Loved the interview.. I am really impressed by people like Gayu who work in the creative field. You guys have to work really hard (at least harder than us 9:00 to 5:00 folks ) to maintain and make new connections, follow trends, create engaging content, think of new ideas etc to keep that money and gigs rolling in.. and you never know where your next pay check is gonna come from.. I don’t think I am brave enough to even try something like that.. maybe after seeing a monthly pay check for more than 13 years, I am conditioned that way…
And no the interview was not boring, it was very insightful for me, I was making sure I did not miss any words.. and to that end - Aryan , I think it’s time you invested in a dual wireless mic setup for your interviews..

Thank you for such a kind comment! I think both fields have their pros and cons. While it’s a lot more unstable to be in this field, pay check to pay check, I think there are pros in that you can work your own hours, you do not have to heed to a collective. That being said, a strong work ethic is important anywhere. Thank you Vishnu!
And about the audio, sorry - the next two interviews are also pretty abysmal in terms of my audio but whatever I shoot here on out I’ll shoot with proper quality

@@badboy333666999 have you considered using soft boxes or other light modifiers for your photography..? I did dabble a bit in photography… the results were pretty cool using octaboxes and a proper flash..!!! Try it out.. since you are super into flash photography..!!!
