The manufacture of a stone axe including the handle from using only primitive tools and materials. It is a celt (pronounced "salt") a type of axe with a polished stone head wedged into a hole or mortise at the end of a wooden handle (not to be confused with a "Kelt" referring to a Celtic person). The head took about a week and a day to make as I chose to make it from a particularly large piece of basalt. The hammer stone used to shape the basalt was of quartz. This involved hammering, pecking, grinding, and polishing the head into the final shape. The handle took a day and a morning to make. A chisel was made from stone and a mallet made from a log. These were used to cut the tree for the handle and shape it once down. The fire was used to harden the wood and also to help shape the mortise. The axe was then used to cut down a tree the day after the handle was a tree itself. It is a more efficient tool for felling trees than the hand axe I made and at the time of uploading this video has cut down 4 trees which I will use later. Because this stone axe is blunter than a steel one, the blade needs to hit the tree at angles greater than 45 degrees- otherwise, the blade would glance off. So celts were used more like wedges than modern axes.

There is just something so satisfying about seeing someone make weapons of war from scratch.

I feel like I missed a previous video about how to make the tools you use to make the spear
@Hellion how do you make THOSE tools?
@Hellion Your exactly right. All polished stone equipment, which was stronger than flaked flint, was seriously ground for 50+ total hours depending on the tool to get its shape. Polished greenstone in the stone age woulda been like finding bronze early

Fun fact
Some time in ancient history certain weapons and armour were created from bones
Example
Pufferfish helmet
Basically Pufferfish skeleton dried up and turned into a spiked helm
And a shark tooth sword!
Primitive people on islands hunts sharks not only for the meat but also for their skulls and teeth to be tied into the edge of a paddle like sword which can either break bones under armour due to the sheer weight or cut through flesh. causing bleeding due to the teeth being serrated
Also there's some ancient evidence that bone knives, spears, and arrows were created and used by primitive people
In the pacific islands such as Rarotongan fiji tonga niue samoa new Zealand etc...you would see this is how we lived creating objects condements etc..not just weapons but also equipment. Tools. Cutlery jewelry ..I'm a craftsmen myself and I'm Maori I make traditional Maori Jewelry and fine projects carving bone, wood and also stone this is beautiful craftsmanship keep up the beautiful work🙏❤️🙌
its either my school teaches too much or you didn't pay attention in history
I thought that sticks, bones and stones were the main primary materials and/or tools
Musical instruments were often mate by bone and carved by rock
And they said you can’t learn from UA-cam
Sharks don't have bones
It’s strange how if we brought a caveman from the past to the present and gave them a gun they’d be awestruck. Yet the same applies to us present day people being brought from the present to the past would be awestruck from the stone spears they use
Language was simpler back then we should go back to using words like "follow kill animal"
@@FMCMUSA It's not really that simple. Language is constantly evolving to become more and less complex. Mandarin, for example, really is that simple. The grammar basically break down to that very simple form of "Pig eat scrap," "Barbarian attack us," and "I play toy." But to some people, like us English speakers, it's unclear exactly what you mean. Do you mean "Barbarians are attacking us" or "Barbarians attack us sometimes?" Different languages just have different logic systems using LOTS of (or little) context clues to figure out what someone means. Some languages avoid using context clues as much as possible. As long as a language is internally consistent & understandable to listeners, it's fine. English uses a lot less context clues than something like Japanese, which usually leaves out subjects in language altogether. Point is, it doesn't really matter. Every language is fine in its own way because people's mindsets evolve around their languages to understand what someone means.
Also, we really don't know that language was much simpler in the past. In fact, there's no evidence for that at all because Indo-Europeans (and Homo Erectus, if you go back far enough) didn't write anything down. Language oftentimes becomes MORE simple as time goes on under certain circumstances, like cross-cultural contact.
If you looking for simple spear just make campfire and sharpen a Wood, then burn the pointy end but not making it burned. It's called fire hardened spear
Wooden tools were only used if necessary, otherwise stone spears were used.
Wooden spear does not really work but wooden arrow does work
@thevikingwanderer2675 yes ik
Neanderthal throwing spears were made entirely out of wood but had the most weight on the tip and were very light at the bottom and thin so they would fly straight when thrown and not tumble in mid air and this also needed no fletching whatsoever so no, wooden spears were superior because they were just as deadly and also far easier to make and less time consuming than this you need around 4-5 hours of grinding to achieve this spear shape from a hard rock but u can achieve same results with less than an hour of carving a straight spear shaft maybe 2 hours if u have stone flakes as tools only
Him after seeing a long rock : *ah yes , its record time*
That's a stronger spear point than a flintknapped spear point, awesome.
Do I need a spear? No. But I’m going to make one and never use it in fear of breaking it.

At the beginning of the video, when you were using the chisel, the surface was not stable enough, you were losing energy as some of it was dispersing into the ground

anything hard really, like flint etc so it doesnt have the possibility of shattering, plus it can be chiseled and shaped easily

Very cool!!!! May I ask though, what are the advantages of making the spear out of hard stone instead of flint knapping it? Flint knapped Clovis pointed spears killed mastodon and wooly mammoth 12,000 years ago
I am an amateur but I'd imagine you'd need the right kind of rock to knap it
how long does the sanding down process take?
Way longer than that. He used electric tools. His grinding stone barely showed any wear. For stone that size it would take days.
Yes

Flint is much better
Its funny how humans work compared to other animals
we are bloodthirsty killing machines that never stop chasing its prey until it can no longer move from exhaustion + we hunt in packs + we make tools that make killing easier + we have symbiotic relationships with other pack hunters like dogs that help us hunt
The best part? We are the only great ape that hunts prey much bigger than themselves while the others only hunt tiny monkeys and insects
Are you a land apex predator? We call that a trophy
Are you a tanky herbivore that can launch us in the air like nothing? We can that a challenge
Are you an underwater giant? Noa, get the boat!!!
Next we are going to find space squids the size of moons and we are going to eat that too
We are monsters and thats what make us soo cool
this reminds me of IRL craft
How you tied up that grass?

I tried the same thing with a stone I took in the park. I failed. I cannot shape it. Do you have any ideas about what should I do to shape a stone and sharpen it?
Try wet grinding it
You can it just takes a long time. These videos are often edited short to keep people entertained but in reality producing a functioning stone tool by grinding it can take a week of long days work.
@@ReasonAboveEverything I tried to put water on it and grind it on another bigger stone. But the shape of the stone does not seem to be changing…

Am I the only person who thinks it's strange he's making tools from concrete? It's a lot of work for a stone age person to make concrete- they preferred to work from stone, which is all around us.
*let me show you how to make stone tools using stone tools*

If you stab someone in the eye then it will kill if enough force is used.
