Primitive Technology: Stone Axe (celt)

  • The manufacture of a stone ax including the handle from using only primitive tools and materials. It is a celt (pronounced "selt") a type of ax with a polished stone head wedged into a hole or mortise at the end of a wooden handle (not to be confused with a "Kelt" referring to a Celtic person). The head took about a week and a day to make as I chose to make it from a particularly large piece of basalt. The hammer stone used to shape the basalt was of quartz. This involved hammering, pecking, grinding and polishing the head into the final shape. The handle took a day and a morning to make. A chisel was made from stone and a mallet made from a log. These were used to cut the tree for the handle and shape it once down. Fire was used to harden the wood and also to help shape the mortise. The ax was then used to cut down a tree the day after the handle was a tree itself. It is a more efficient tool for felling trees than the hand ax I made and at the time of uploading this video has cut down 4 trees which I will use later. Because this stone axe is blunter than a steel one, the blade needs to hit the tree at angles greater than 45 degrees- otherwise the blade would glance off. So celts were used more like wedges than modern axes.

    3:03 this brief shot is critically important and I want everyone to understand the significance: The axe blade does NOT bear on the sides of the hole, only the ends. Every blow with the axe drives the axe head into the hole. If that force went to the sides, the axe handle would split very soon, and even binding around it would not help much. Because the force is applied to the ends of the hole, they are in effect trying to stretch the handle lengthwise, and the grain of wood is very good at resisting tension.

      I don't understand how swinging it doesn't make it eventually put pressure on the sides anyway. You'd have to swing it at the perfect angle every time for it to not move to the side enough times for it to get wedged the long way enough for this to not be a problem

      The description at the bottom of the video will often contain most of the information used in the video. Types of rocks, woods, and most other materials are mostly experimental. For extra explanation on the subjects you may have questions on, asking a question in the comments or looking it up online will most likely get you the results you're looking for, as writing every explanation in the description would be far too time-consuming. Good day!

      @jordanb722 Місяць тому +1

      If anything, it's the opposite for me. Not that this doesn't take an inordinate amount of persistence and effort - but that our ancestors had to do this much work to get a tool that is still not that great. It shows how far we've come - modern tools trivialise so many things that you forget just how insanely hard so much stuff would be without modern metal tools, much less motorised equipment.

    Very impressed. A modern man making very usable tools like our ancestors once did. I'm attempting a celt made of basalt. Catoctin greenstone. Was originally shooting for a 3/4 groove but the stone just kept saying celt, so going with the celt. Different type of handle now though. Was going with a pin oak for the 3/4 but will change to a handle design that will work for a celt. Hopefully the pin oak will still work. Will be sure the stone doesn't touch the sides. Will model it after the one you've made. By the power you use to fell the tree, it looks like you definitely have a great design worked out. On a side note, I love the way you shot the bow video, with repeated tries over and over until you got closer and closer to the target by feel. Thank you for sharing what you've learned. Really enjoying your videos!

    I was walking along a rocky beach looking for a celt shaped stone to make a smaller version of this, like a hatchet. I found one that is very nicely shaped for this type of stone axe. It is of a hard type of stone, not sedimentary rock. It is flat with sea-rounded edges and has one end wider than the other. The only thing I have to do it is sharpen the wide end. Just sharing this tip it worked really well to find my hatchet sized axe head.

    It’s actually weird to think about. Although we are way beyond the Stone Age, that is in regards to humanity as a whole.
