Primitive Technology: Stone Axe (celt)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 тра 2015
- The manufacture of a stone ax including the handle from using only primitive tools and materials. It is a celt (pronounced "selt") a type of ax with a polished stone head wedged into a hole or mortise at the end of a wooden handle (not to be confused with a "Kelt" referring to a Celtic person). The head took about a week and a day to make as I chose to make it from a particularly large piece of basalt. The hammer stone used to shape the basalt was of quartz. This involved hammering, pecking, grinding and polishing the head into the final shape. The handle took a day and a morning to make. A chisel was made from stone and a mallet made from a log. These were used to cut the tree for the handle and shape it once down. Fire was used to harden the wood and also to help shape the mortise. The ax was then used to cut down a tree the day after the handle was a tree itself. It is a more efficient tool for felling trees than the hand ax I made and at the time of uploading this video has cut down 4 trees which I will use later. Because this stone axe is blunter than a steel one, the blade needs to hit the tree at angles greater than 45 degrees- otherwise the blade would glance off. So celts were used more like wedges than modern axes.

3:03 this brief shot is critically important and I want everyone to understand the significance: The axe blade does NOT bear on the sides of the hole, only the ends. Every blow with the axe drives the axe head into the hole. If that force went to the sides, the axe handle would split very soon, and even binding around it would not help much. Because the force is applied to the ends of the hole, they are in effect trying to stretch the handle lengthwise, and the grain of wood is very good at resisting tension.
Based.
This sounds like an answer to a physics question
Just the comment i was looking for ❤️
It is literally written in 4:12
I don't understand how swinging it doesn't make it eventually put pressure on the sides anyway. You'd have to swing it at the perfect angle every time for it to not move to the side enough times for it to get wedged the long way enough for this to not be a problem
As cliche as this might sound this video was what inspired me to make my first stone tools which opened to many first hand experiences working with many materials ranging from basalt, obsidian to copper and even bone. after revisiting your video after seven years I would like to thank you for being such a impactful influence.

The description at the bottom of the video will often contain most of the information used in the video. Types of rocks, woods, and most other materials are mostly experimental. For extra explanation on the subjects you may have questions on, asking a question in the comments or looking it up online will most likely get you the results you're looking for, as writing every explanation in the description would be far too time-consuming. Good day!

This stuff is extremely cool honestly, primitive technology is very fascinating. Although now adays we have stuff like chainsaws, it is fascinating seeing what was used for centuries
