Man, I'm glad I found your channel. I have been on the Bombtrack for the last week and you basically helped me out so much. I have one on order and not to jack you but I'm setting mine up just like yours. Well, not the paint job but the dropper post and tires that is. You're the only person on UA-cam that has actually talked about it in depth, so I thank you for that.

    • @EverythingsBeenDone
      @EverythingsBeenDone  5 років тому

Annalisa helped me with my bike fit a few months ago when she was down at Golden Saddle Cyclery. Super nice and extremely knowledgeable! We only had an hour but we were able to make some pretty noticeable adjustments to my fit. I've been riding for 7-8 years and have never felt more comfortable on a bike.

  • @jkl0ps

This is the dream build. So glad you went full-enduro with a dropper and hacked in the brifter actuation no less! Droppers are one of those things that make riding SO FUN. Worth every gram and I'm looking at getting the externally routed PDW Pine to swap between my rigid 29er and Spec diverge. One dropper benefit you didn't mention is how it allows you to get in a much better body position for railing tight corners, etc. Can't wait to see more videos showcasing how this thing rides...

I got into watching your station initially because it popped up when i was looking for NW Oregon and gravel. I have watched several of your videos now over the last bunch of months, and I love the mix of rides, technical stuff (like this), advice (like the mapping one recently), and other ramblings.
This is some of the bike tech stuff I love to see, where someone gives the build and then gives some idea of the why of each choice, which I find the most helpful as it helps one's viewers also pick and choose which pieces they may want to adopt.
    Nicely done!

Sweet build, Dustin! I'm with you on SRAM and 1X. I'm frankly surprised too that droppers are not more common in gravel builds. Or road bikes for that matter, but look at the resistance to discs in the road bike world. I'm sure that things will change as people's opinions evolve.

So funny, you have an almost identical setup(drivetrain wise) to my Surly Midnight Special build. Custom built with Force 1x, Red HRD with 160mm disc up front(also a friend hookup) and Force HRD with a 140mm on the back. I would do a dropper post too, but there's no hills in the Midwest to justify it. Anyways, cool build and have fun riding!

Your setup is near identical to mine (even painted my forks myself, just not the frame - I actually came across your vid painting yours when researching painting a carbon bike). I'm Running a Planet X carbon frame which is visually very similar - only draw back is no rack mounts, which is something I will look for in my next frame when I decided to upgrade. My bike bag setup hasn't hindered this though but it's nice to have those options. My best investment on it this year has been the Brooks Cambium C17 Carved which I picked up for a steal at £80. I wasn't sure about the hype surrounding them but with over 1500km on it already and it's been a game changer. Got a 400km ride coming up next week which will be the longest single ride on it (175km has been my longest ride with it so far) but I honestly forget about it it's that good.
I LOVE my gravel kings put about 2000km on them over summer - have just switched them over to Jack Brown Blues (now made by Panaracer) for my longer ride as will have more B roads then gravel and they shred hard (and look cool as fuck)! Will be back on the GK's after the ride for winter.
Dropper post intrigues me a - you should do a vid on the pros and cons of it.
    Subbed - Keep shredin' 🤘

My own limited experience on my own gravel grinder has been leading me to a similar conclusion build wise, especially with respect to the dropper and 47mm tires over 38 (max. I can fit is 40mm, bike came with 38mm).
I wasn’t sure about the compact double up front, but on flatter terrain I like it, the 11-32 cassette is easy-peasy on the road, but a 11-36 would be better minimum for those long 12% plus skidder and fire roads.
And I had the same question do I want a 22lb XC bike or a 22lb gravel bike...more cush or the challenge of underbiking?
Oh, and baggies all the way, eh.

Not sure if you are still checking the comments on this video lol. This bike seems like a super cool setup. I was thinking of doing the same thing of adding a dropper connected to the left Sram shifter. Wondering how you handled the issue that both the dropper and the shifter want to have the pre-crimped end of the shifter cable. Am currently looking at a similar PNW Components post.

I've got the same Gravel King SKs in 650B on my Specialized Sequoia. On my Hunt Adventure Sport rims (inner width 25mm) they come up almost true to size at 49mm, a lot narrower than on your rims. Just as well, as another couple of millimetres and those babies would grind to a halt in the back at the first sign of mud.

I come from both MTB and road and tend to use both front chainrings quite a bit.....but......thinking about it, when not "cross chaining", as I try not to any more than necessary, I only end up using about 5 of the gears in the middle of the range of each chainring anyway, hence, a wide range 10 cassette ought to work fine. LOVE your work, by the way!!

@@fractalofgod6324 the fattest i've put on is 700x42, but they measure out at 45 (23mm internal rim) and there's a ton more clearance. i'd hazard to guess you could mount 2 inch 29er tires easily.

Pretty nice build, love the paint, and very cool you did it on your own!
Still haven't come around to the idea of a dropper on a gravel bike mostly because I haven't found a need for one on my mountain bikes. The biggest factor being the inseam in relation to the torso length centered on the bike I just don't have problems getting low and behind the saddle. However, I do understand why people use them even on gravel bikes and you did point out a very important point about pedaling low.
More importantly....DO NOT USE GLITTER!!! This was a topic or idea that popped up circa 2009-2010 where a guy was experimenting, and it kind of caught on. I tried it, it does nothing. What it does do is leave glitter to contend with for the entire span of ownership of a wheelset! It gets everywhere, and never goes away. As for Finish Line Sealant, I've heard good things about it, but being an early adopter of tubeless while living over in EU, I had to make my own due to Stan Sealant unavailability at the time (2002'ish)
I like those Ritchey wheels but I wonder if they're too wide for a 1.9 tire. The reason being that there's only so much sidewall to start out with, and a 35mm rim is going to stretch that sidewall out to the point where its making contact with the ground as part of the contact patch since the contact patch is narrower than the rim internal width. This will especially be noticeable when the bike is weighted down w/ rider and gear. Where this becomes problematic is that the sidewall is not meant to be part of the contact patch and will wear a lot faster exposing threads and then start leaking.

I've run 160mm rotors in the front and 140mm in the back, and I liked it. You kind of trail off on an important ramble there. I'm sure some classical physics folks could help me out, but I think the gist is this: when you decelerate, the mass of the bike, you, and all your accessories will be loading the front wheel more than the rear, therefore you require more power to balance out (increased radius on the rotor means increased leverage, or torque). It's asymmetrical just like your fancy rims... what did your buddy call it? OCR?

So only a couple lbs. of difference between the Accent. Ok, but what about feel, geometry and fit differences right? This is the reason to have so many ass kicking bikes. It's kinda like being able to be a bigamist/swinger and get away with it. Not only legally and socially but each of the bikes loves you and is ok with you loving other bikes. And you know, you can work it out with each bike if they want someone else to ride them for a change every now and then but they always come back to you. Think about it man, you wouldn't compare all your different wives just based on weight, now would you? THEY CALL ME THE SWINGING BIKE BIGAMIST. LIFE IS GOOD :)

Ease off the jojo, bro. And PNW - yeah, superior engineering. I run one (I forget which, not the top-level but right below it) and it is utterly perfect in every way. The timing of the seat rebound/extension could not possibly be improved. Fast, but not ball-busting fast. Precise stops when lowering the seat, precise elevation when gradually bring it back up. Perfect.
